THE CHARISMA GOLD CUP 2001 -

Analysis & Selections by THE ROOK - Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular  may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race,  we  have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;  (¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ),   as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds;   (²E/W ALTERNATIVE ) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

T.H.E. R.O.O.K. :<>:~~>Fondmort, Perange, Pietro Bembo, Hot Shots, Krabloonik and Red Guard, look best of those runners lining up for the opener. Fondmort who was brought to our attention before he ran won in this country by Christopher Iles in our "Focus on France" feature looks every inch a chaser. he has reportedly done very well during the summer and can turn over some disappointing efforts at the end of the season. Red Guard is another horse I like, who is  trying fences for the first time.  This useful two mile handicapper won't be far away and looks best of the possible eachway alternatives
¹NØ.1 CHOICE :<>:~~> Fondmort
²E/W ALTERNATIVE :<>:~~> Red Guard

2:55 Weatherbys Insurance Juvenile Novices' Hurdle Class D

T.H.E. R.O.O.K. :<>:~~>I wonder if Comandante, would be the suggested favourite if he came into this with same form f8igures but was trained by a lesser trainer .. I'd very much doubt it. Whilst there is no way of telling how good he is I'd have to pass on the bare evidence i've seen. Star of Wonder has at least proven her aptitude, and tenacity, and in my view warrants support despite her penalties here
¹NØ.1 CHOICE :<>:~~> Star of Wonder,
²E/W ALTERNATIVE :<>:~~> Eliipop,

3:25 Charisma Gold Cup (Handicap Chase) Class B £30000 added, 5yo plus, 3m, penalty £17400, 13 runners.

T.H.E. R.O.O.K. :<>:~~>Sulphur Springs, Dorans Gold, Soundtrack, Tremallt, Satshoon, and Blowing Rock head the market in an intriguing renewal of the Charisma Gold Cup. The well weighted Dorans Gold will prove popular with his stable absolutely buzzing at present, and have impressed when sauntering to victory in Market Rasen's big summer handicap chase. He looks handily treated on only 10-5 and shouldn't be too far away. Soundtrack, Tremallt, and Satshoon, all though have strong credentials too and wont be too far away, Satshoon, a promising point to pointer in his youth, is starting to fulfill that promise under rules and another to add to that shortlist. Sulphur Springs gets the vote though, mainly because former useful horse in France (in his youth) is probably still well treated under rules, despite winning his last five on the bounce. I though he was particularly impressive when winning at Market Rasen, where he beat Audacter (who won at Exeter earlier in the week) by a distance. If he gets into a rhythm he would be hard to peg back. Ceanannas Mor's entry in the race also catches my eye. he has completely failed to show any of the ability i believe connections think he has on the track, and last term also lost his confidence over the larger obstacles. He has tested my faith in him ( I have put him in my website's horses to follow list again), and is long overdue a return. I expect the Malborough tactics (as I expect the tactics used on any horse held up, with a dodgy jumping record to be called) to be employed, and I'd take confidence if he manages a good placing.
¹NØ.1 CHOICE :<>:~~> Sulphur Springs,
²E/W ALTERNATIVE :<>:~~> Ceanannas Mor

3:55 Platinum Security Hurdle Class B

T.H.E. R.O.O.K. :<>:~~> This is an enlightening race as Jair du Cochet, Ulundi, Armaturk, and Impek, are four 'pretenders' of whom plenty is expected this season. I still haven't decided what I think of Jair du Cochet ... He is clearly a talented individual, however I always thought that he w3as a most precocious three year old, who may lose that dominance as he aged. I know many reports in the french press thought that the British trainers enthusiasm was for the wrong horse in Guillame Macaire's care - they considered Janus du Cochet to be the better long term prospect. Might we possibly therefore have seen the best of Jair du Cochet ?.... probably not, however i doubt we'll see the 'model' we saw to devastating effect last season (I would doubt that he would be 100% fit - especially as he has a long campaign ahead). With that in mind he may we worth opposing today, especially as Armaturk may well hustle him along early on. He clearly has improved since racing in France and ran a blinder behind Bell D'Anjou in the Free Handicap hurdle. I'll take him to cause a surprise. Impek who is favoured by the weights has a satisfactory first season's hurdling. he is best judged on his earliest performance on suitable ground, and has a better chance than is immediately obvious. He is the best eachway bet in my view.
¹NØ.1 CHOICE :<>:~~> Armaturk
²E/W ALTERNATIVE :<>:~~> Impek

4:30 Chief's Song Handicap Chase Class B

T.H.E. R.O.O.K. :<>:~~> It is difficult to dismiss the claims of any of the seven runners in race five, ands i have no strong view of the race. Damus impressed when winning over hurdles 20 days ago, and is marginally preferred to Irbee.
¹NØ.1 CHOICE :<>:~~> Damus (GER)
²E/W ALTERNATIVE :<>:~~>

5:00 'Matt's 60th Birthday And Retirement' Handicap Hurdle Class D
¥:<>:<>:<>:THE FURLONG POLE:<>:<>:<>:¥
T.H.E. R.O.O.K. :<>:~~> Arabian Moon, Cruise The Fairway, Chaos Theory, Ice Crystal, Veneguera, Summer Break, and all have claims in another trappy event to weigh up. Arabian Moon has been in good form during the early season exchanges, winning all of his three starts. He did though give the impression that the handicapper was catching up with him when winning at Uttoxeter last time out, and a better bet may be Cruise The Fairway, a useful novice when trained last term by Mark Pitman, who can go close despite carrying top weight.
¹NØ.1 CHOICE :<>:~~> Cruise The Fairway,
²E/W ALTERNATIVE :<>:~~> Veneguera,
