Charlie Hall Steeple Ch. (gr. II)

Analysis by

  .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

WETHERBY
Saturday 2nd November
|¨¨¨ Iª ¨¨¨ WETHERBY¨¨¨¨|¨¨¨¨"- 12:40 Arthur Stephenson Novices' H' cap Steeple Ch. £7500 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f 110yds, penalty £5206.50, 8 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Hallyards Gael, Yankee Jamie, Tribal King, Trusting Tom, Monkey Island, and Red Hot Indian, all have claim in the opener on Weatherby's card. HALLYARDS GAEL has had a chequered career over fences, however he did win here over course and distance on his latest start. He should go close however TRUSTING TOM [who benefited from opposition's lapses at market Rasen last time out] and YANKEE JAMIE [a son of strong Gale, who has won his last two starts over hurdles impressively , most recently at Kelso in December... He makes his chasing debut today.] provide stern opposition. There probably isn't that much to choose between them, however Yankie Jamie's potential wins the day.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Yankee Jamie,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Hallyards Gael,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Trusting Tom

|¨¨¨ IIª ¨¨¨ WETHERBY¨¨¨¨|¨¨¨¨"- 1:10 Rocom H' cap Steeple Ch. £16000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f 110yds, penalty £11190.40, 8 runners.

¦ (ONE TO JUMP 2003) - are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦: ¬>-Goguenard and Il'Athou (FR)
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Eight experienced handicappers line up for the second and you can make cases for the claims of Jungli, Turgeonev, Korakor, Il'Athou, Duchamp, Goguenard, Random Harvest, and Red Striker. The key to the race is surely Il'Athou, such an exciting novice chaser last term, when winning three of his four starts. His only poor effort was in the Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase (gr.1), where led to the sixth, but weakened quickly before being pulled up when well out of contention at the last. He is better than that and as long as it hasn't left its mark, he should be capable of finding further opportunities this season... I'll side with him.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Il'Athou,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Turgeonev,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Goguenard, [e/w]

|¨¨¨ IIIª ¨¨¨ WETHERBY¨¨¨¨|¨¨¨¨"- 1:40 Freephone Stanley 0808 100 1221 Wensleydale Juvenile Novices' Hurdle (Listed Race) £15000 added, 3yo only, 2m, penalty £10387, 12 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Fascinating juvenile hurdle comes next, and TUNSTALL, [ a winner over course and distance in October, where he beat MONTESSORI MIO, (who reopposes) ]; ADECCO, [formerly trained in Germany by Christian Von Der Recke, he made a pleasing appearance over hurdles at Ludlow, where he beating Short Change by 8lemgths], SPORAZENE, [a winner on the flat at Chantilly in June for André Fabre, who has now joined Paul Nicholls] and NEWTOWN DANCER, [an encouraging second to Lost In The Rain at Listowel in September], make the most appeal here. This is very difficult as it isn't easy to gauge Sporazene, and Adecco, however I was impressed with Tunstall, and having selected him here on his debut, cannot find it in me to oppose him here.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Tunstall
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Adecco
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Sporazene,

|¨¨¨ IVª ¨¨¨ WETHERBY¨¨¨¨|¨¨¨¨"- 2:15 Peterhouse Group Charlie Hall Steeple Ch. (gr. 2) . £50000 added, 5yo plus, 3m 1f, penalty £29000, 8 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- This is a good race, however nowhere near as good as the media have tried to bill it. Lord Noelie, Marlborough, What's Up Boys, Grey Abbey, Moscow Express, Hussard Collonges, Whitenzo, and Gingembre are some of the best handicappers (and Graded) horses we have ... but not necessarily the cream of the crop... Four appeal - MARLBOROUGH - [didn't stay in the Scottish Grand Nationals last time out, however he was a good 4th in the Gold Cup], WHAT'S UP BOYS - [so gallant in defeat behind Bindaree in the Grand National]; HUSSARD COLLONGES - [ a progressive novice chaser last term, however I thought he was a little lucky to win the Sun Alliance Chase (Japhet in my view would have won if he hadn't fallen when still travelling well two out)] and WHITENZO - [was a good novice two years ago however lost his way, but was decent at this trip over hurdles, finishing a good second to It Takes Time at Sandown on his latest start]. Malborough appears to be thrown in at these weights, and if he is back to his best form, will be very difficult to beat.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Marlborough,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Whitenzo,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Hussard Collonges,

|¨¨¨ Vª ¨¨¨ WETHERBY¨¨¨¨|¨¨¨¨"- 2:50 Tote Scoop6 H' cap Hurdle £10000 added, 4yo plus, 2m 4f 110yds, penalty £7046, 13 runners.

¦ (ONE TO JUMP 2003) - are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦: ¬>-D'Argent,
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Cill Churnain, D'Argent, King's Bounty, Exstoto, Bustling Rio, Formal Bid and I Got Rhythm, all have claims in the fifth. I'm really keen on D'ARGENT here. This grey gelding ran four times last term showing plenty of promise on his hurdles debut to finish second to Tommy Trooper at Fontwell (btn ¾ lengths). He ran two more times winning with a bit in hand at Doncaster and more recently at Exeter in March, where he outbattled Dantie Boy, eventually winning by 2lengths. He will definitely improve for the run, however he is still worth chancing and gets the vote over Cill Churnain, who has done nothing wrong, however is starting to meet some of the better handicap hurdlers after an extremely fruitful summer campaign.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- D'Argent,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Cill Churnain,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Exstoto,

|¨¨¨ VIª ¨¨¨ WETHERBY¨¨¨¨|¨¨¨¨"- 3:20 John Smith's Hurdle (Registered As The West Yorkshire Hurdle) (gr. 2) £30000 added, 4yo plus, 3m 1f, penalty £17400, 7 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Boss Doyle, Brother Joe, Spendid, Stromness, Ad Hoc, Bindaree and Frosty Canyon all can be given chances of sorts in the sixth. It is a bit of a chaser's convention, so much so that you can't be certain how these chasers will perform here. Although Boss Doyle has won this race for the last two years, BROTHER JOE - [a useful staying on the flat and over hurdles, who finished third to It Takes Time at Sandown in April], STROMNESS - [ a useful staying novice last term, who was impressive when winning at the Grand National Meeting] and AD HOC, - [so unlucky in the Grand National when being brought down four out, who was a good to Bounce Back in the Attheraces Gold Cup on the final day of last season] make more appeal here. There will probably be plenty of pace here whilst may suit Stromness , who is preferred to Ad Hoc
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Stromness,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Ad Hoc,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Brother Joe,

|¨¨¨ VIIª ¨¨¨ WETHERBY¨¨¨¨|¨¨¨¨"- 3:55 November Novices' Hurdle . £9000 added, 4yo plus, 2m, penalty £6805.50, 24 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Jaboune, Multeen River, Sporting Gesture, Detonateur, Zoltano, Militaire, Flash of Memory, and Frankie Anson all have claims on a particularly open-looking novices hurdle which ends the card. Jaboune will go off probably as favourite, however his last run when well beaten by Puntal at Market Rasen on Good to Soft ground is very off-putting, especially with the amount of rain that has fallen there in the last 24hours. Detonateur, who finished midfield behind Like-A-Butterfly in Supreme Novices Hurdle, does at least go on the surface, and had shown enough on his previous starts over hurdles to make him a live threat here .. he is jump preferred. Zoltano a winner in Germany on soft ground could be the best eachway value.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Detonateur,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Zoltano, [e/w]
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Militaire,

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within 1/2Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
Surbiton obliged at 16/1.

KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30

THE DERBY 2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
