Analysis
& Selections by THE ROOK - Whether
it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs,
we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the
fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and
requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner
or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular
may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the
"ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is
the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS
- For each race,
we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest
winners; (¹
NØ.1 CHOICE ),
as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (²E/W
ALTERNATIVE ) .
Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.]:-:-->Glacial Dancer, Joe Luke, Ten Mile Hill, Colourful Life, Monkey Island, Arctic Challenge, Scotmail Lad, and Rigadoon, appear t0o be the likeliest winners of the opener. Joe Luke may go off favourite, as he won on his chasing debut over 3miles at Perth in May beating Amber Moss by 21lengths. He wasn't foot perfect that day and will to improve of that effort to takes the spoils here. Glacial Dancer usually goes well fresh and if he takes to these larger obstacles shouldn't be too far away. I just prefer Ten Mile Hill, who is the most likely to put in that all important clear round, and more relevantly isn't too badly treated for winning a little event at Market Rasen on his latest start. Artic Challenge who got touched off by Watership Down at Sedgefield last month (beaten 1/2length) looks the best eachway option.

[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.]:-:-->Quazar, Bula Rose, Diamond Joshua, and Magic Waters, are the only horses I'd consider in a disappointing juvenile event. Winning pair Bula Rose, and Diamond Joshua have sound credential however they don't have the form in the book that Quazar has. If Jonjo O'Neill charge is in the same form that saw him take three races this term - including a nice win earlier in the week at Cheltenham. I'd expect him to score here. Magic Waters, who showed plenty of promise behind Diamond Joshua on his hurdling bow is the best eachway bet here.

[ANY RUNNERS FROM OUR N.H. HORSES-TO-FOLLOW FEATURE?]:-:-->Sudden Shock (GER)
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.]:-:-->Crazy Horse, Boss Doyle, Merry Masquerade, Turnpole, Sudden Shock, and Historic, make most appeal in the third. A strong pace is virtually guaranteed as I'd be surprised if Historic doesn't attempt his rivals here. He had a good introduction to jumping ;last winter, winning at Haydock before finishing a creditable [if well beaten] second to Garruth at the Grand National Meeting. He probably though isn't quite physically strong enough to stretch these, and may be setting the race up for the hold up horses Crazy Horse, Boss Doyle, and Turnpole. With Mary Reverley's stable in red hot form, it may be unwise to desert the stable, however Crazy Horse looked to be really appreciating the step up in trip, at the end of last season, and I thought he was extremely impressive when beating Manx Magic by 3 1/2lengths at Haydock at the beginning of this season. He should be the last to strike, and this move should prove decisive. A word for Sudden Shock, a more than useful ex German trained gelding, who has good form Italy, Germany, and France. I put him in my website's list of horses to follow as I think he's make a lovely chaser this term, but he's more than capable of holding his own here, and I wouldnt be surprised if he got into the frame. If you're looking for an eachway bet you could do a lot worse than him.

[ANY RUNNERS FROM OUR N.H. HORSES-TO-FOLLOW FEATURE?]:-:--> Somemanforoneman, and A Piece Of Cake,
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.]:-:--> It is very difficult (in my view) to rule out any of the field in the fourth, and Redemption, Exit To Wave, [a little too much weight?] Fullopep, Ballinclay King, [might need this], Somemanforoneman, Grey Abbey, Under Wraps, A Piece Of Cake, and Banker Count are all worthy of some degree of consideration. Somemanforoneman will attempt o make all and is capable of getting this lot in trouble if fully wound up. The home reports certainly suggest a good run, and he is worthy of eachway consideration, however if Redemption [a] jumps round, and [b] is in the same form that saw him cruise home here last time out, I think his undoubted class will see him home.

[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.]:-:-->Cruz Santa, could be another 'Reveley favorite' on this card, however I'm not sure that beating Plenty Courage in a moderate Class [E] handicap merits this, and Mister Benjamin, Lorenzino, Deep Water, Athleague Guest, Bold King, and Gortmore Mews, are all worse a cursory glance. Mister Benjamin, is a useful if frustrating animal, but definitely has the form, and the ability on the book to take this, however I'll be brave and suggest Brave King (eachway) having his first run for Ian Williams. He ran creditably over both codes for Nigel Callaghan last season, but showed his best form over the larger obstacles. He is nicely treated over hurdles, and his pilot's 3lbs claim is that extra bit of spice required. He should give a good account here

[ANY RUNNERS FROM OUR N.H. HORSES-TO-FOLLOW FEATURE?]:-:--> Sleeping Night (FR)
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.]:-:-->Of the nine horses who line up for this Grade 2 event, I like the following runners;
Sleeping Night - top class four-year-old chaser in France who took the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Group 3), and Prix Orcade (Grade 3 Chase). One of the best of his generation in 2000, and has been laid out for this, his British debut. He is an unknown quantity at the trip, and has to give weight to his elders. He hasn't been set an easy task, but I would be hopeful of a creditable run to begin the season
Shotgun Willy: - Top class novice chaser, who was given a little too much credit for beating an unfit First Gold art Newbury. He was expected to replicate that effort at Aintree but could handle the conditions when finishing well behind What's Up Boys at Aintree. A lovely prospect for this season, and must go close here, but if you take a balanced view of his win at Newbury does have something to prove.
Sackville - Another top class novice chaser, who carried all before him in Ireland. Didn't cut much ice over 2miles behind Zayta at punchestown in October, but should have come on for the run. In terms of winning a race like the Gold Cup, he ran a little too often for my own liking, against inferior opposition, which makes him a little difficult to evaluate. He appears to have a bit to find on the book, but may be up to the task…. We shall see.
Legal Right: - Talented if injury proned chaser who progressed through the ranks last season. He ran a great race when finishing third behind first gold at Aintree, but didn't appear to see out that trip, so needs to prove himself before I'd want to support him at this trip.
Streamstown - Vastly improved handicapper last season whose winning run was brought to an abrupt end by Frantic Tan at Haydock in February. Didn't run again afterwards, but still appeared to be capable of a bit more improvement to me
Lord Noelie - with the stable firing on all cylinders Lord Noelle should be favourite here. He to me, has the best form in the race, having run a blinder when second to First Gold in the Martell Gold Cup, conditions should suit, and he gets weight from his rivals here …. Major chance
SUMMARY - The weights appear to favour Lord Noelie, and whilst I like Shotgun Willy as one of the better long term prospect amongst these, it would hardly be the biggest surprise if he got turned over here. Sleeping Night should do well once he finds his level. I wouldnt be surprised if he nicked a place despite meeting these rivals of such poor terms
