Analysis
& Selections by

"the rook"
Whether it be
"the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses
participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or
two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ "one to jump" ¦ ~~ Are there any horses from "ONE TO JUMP" 2002/3 - Our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the current national hunt season?:¬»-Bareme
(FR), Saintsaire (FR), Desert Air (JPN), & Le Duc (FR)
¦ "future winners" ¦ ~~ Are there any horses from "FUTURE WINNERS (N.H.)" - Our feature which notes horses to watch for follow during the current national hunt season?:¬»-Well
Chief (GER), & Crystal D'Ainay
¦ "the rook" ¦:¬»- The JCB Triumph Hurdle attracted a huge entry of 111
juveniles. It isn't one of my favourite races, not because I think it's
particularly cruel in any way, it's more that the race invariably doesn't throw
up future Champion Hurdlers which I believed was it's original intention though
it has thrown up some good hurdlers like Kribensis (1988, who went on to win the
Champion Hurdle) as the well as the likes of Mysilv (1994), Heighlin (1980), Pollardstown
(1979), Connaught Ranger (1978), Persian War (1967, who went on to
win 3 Champion Hurdles) as well as having launched the careers of future chasers
like Katarino (1999), Upgrade (1998), Commanche Court (1997) and Paddy's Return
(1996). Having waded through the field, here is my shortlist:
 |
Bal De Nuit (FR)
- Love to
know what horses were beating him in France as he was a revelation when
sauntering home on his British debut at Kempton. Fell when still in with a
chance last time out, however is not without a chance here; |
 |
Bareme (FR) -
Demonstrated last time out at Kempton that he possesses the raw talent which
could see him develop into a useful hurdler. My one reservation is that at
present, he is a little too "free" for his own good and I'd have
that in the back of my mind particularly in a race as fiercely competitive
as this; |
 |
Bellaficient -
Entitled to consideration on his 2nd to Harchibald (with Mutineer one length
behind in 3rd), however he will need to improve to be realistically entertained; |
 |
Bongo Fury (FR) -
Looked none too promising at the beginning of this season, however has
progressed with racing and has already "bagged" four wins this
season. Others look to have better credentials, however she is tough and
resolute and could be capable of going well despite not being good enough; |
 |
Crystal D'Ainay
(FR) -
Formerly trained in France Guillame Macaire, Crystal D'Ainay had won two of
his four starts before running well on his British debut behind Far
Pavilions in the Victor Ludorum Hurdle. Like all of Monsieur Macaire's
horses, Crystal D'Ainay was being brought along methodically and should
still be open to further improvement here; |
 |
Desert Air (JPN) - I think
Desert Air has done really well this season over hurdles especially as he
still appears to have plenty of growing to do despite having been campaigned
on the flat by Paul Cole. He is very tough and resolute and stuck on
gallantly behind Bahrain last time out at Kempton when looking likely to be
swallowed up turning for home. On paper he doesn't look good enough however
it wouldn't surprise me if he got a top ten placing before going onto better
things next season; |
 |
Don Fernando -
Heads Martin Pipe's team this year after two successes over course and
distance including when withholding the late challenge of Lilium De Cotte.
He failed last time to withhold the late thrust of Moneytrain, however as
that race was falsely run it may not be a reflection of his true potential
here. He should run well; |
 |
East Tycoon - Is
apparently held by Well Chief who had too much pace for him at Kempton last
time out. However, that race was falsely run and arguable he is better
judged on a ridiculously easy success on his hurdles debut at Doncaster. Has
to enter calculations; |
 |
Far Pavilions -
Unbeaten in four starts over hurdles and stepped up on previous form to withhold
the determined challenge of Crystal D'Ainay last time out at
Haydock. He appeared to win with a bit in hand that day and is sure to
acquit himself creditably here...shouldn't be underestimated; |
 |
Golden Cross - One of
Ireland's main challengers for the race having bounced back from a
disappointing run behind Party Airs at Leopardstown on Boxing Day to run
Mutineer to a head in the Cashmans Bookmakers Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2) at
Leopardstown in February, before winning the Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 3) last time out at
Fairyhouse two weeks later... has strong claims and has to be considered here.
; |
 |
Harchibald (FR) -
Previously trained on the flat in France, Harchibald has disappointed after
winning impressively on his debut at Fairyhouse in December most recently
when finishing well behind Mutineer in a Grade 3 event at Punchestown in
January. He ran a much better race last time behind Golden Cross in the Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 3) last time out at
Fairyhouse two weeks ago, and whilst he a bit to find on the book, gets the benefit of the doubt
here as I suspect he does have the ability to show such improvement; |
 |
Kenilworth - Is
improving with experience and finally got his head in front after chasing
home Party Airs, and Mutineer on his two earlier starts. The trainer
apparently is "on" at long odds to land this prize and whilst he's
not an obvious winner, he's certainly a horse that warrants your utmost
respect; |
 |
Le Duc (FR) - Talented
ex-French embryonic chaser who currently doesn't appear to have the
necessary physical strength to win at this level. He does give me the
impression that the penny will drop with him at some stage therefore it
wouldn't be the biggest surprise in the world if he made a bold bid for
success; |
 |
Lilium De Cotte (FR)
- Has to be considered here after his good 3rd to Don Fernando over course
and distance in December however was very disappointing next time out at
Chepstow behind Nas Na Riogh. Freshened up by a short break, he seemed a lot
more willing last time out at Sandown and certainly warrants each-way
consideration here; |
 |
Lost In The Rain - A
winner at Tralee in August before following up a month later at Listowel.
Quite what the value of this form is, I'm not sure. However the trainer Noel
Meade knows what it is to win this event therefore is deserving of your
respect should he line up here.; |
 |
Moneytrain (GER) - Another
good advert for the training skills of Christian Von Der Recke as this horse
showed gradual improvement on each his starts in this country, culminating
in his defeat of Don Fernando and Saintsaire over course and distance last
month. Connections are sure to have him spot on today and he looks sure to give
a good account of himself; |
 |
Mughas - Has an awful
head carriage which gives the onlooker the impression that he is not genuine
- nothing could be further from the truth as he demonstrated last time out
when staying on determinedly to finish behind Well Chief at Kempton at the end
of last month. A competitively run two-miler is probably ideal from him and
I would expect a good performance here; |
 |
Mutineer - The penny
has really dropped with this four-year-old son of highest honour. Having
looked ordinary in four maiden events, Mutineer suddenly showed
improved form winning easily at Punchestown in December before stepping up
in class to win a Grade 3 event at same venue in February. He is improving
all the time and wouldn't be far from the top of the list of Irish
possibles. Would appear to have the right sort of profile for the usual
winner of this race; |
 |
Nas Na Riogh - Enters
calculations having landed the summit hurdle at Chepstow at the end of
December . Nas Na Riogh cruised home in her prep race at Fontwell Park. She
should run well, however she might appreciate a stiffer test of stamina,
particularly if they race here on a fast surface; |
 |
Old California -
Fairly useful stayer on the level when trained by John Dunlop. Old
California posted a smooth success on his only start to date over hurdles at
Fontwell in November. Quite what the form amounts to is unclear, however his
flat form suggests he is not a horse to underestimate here; |
 |
Party Airs (USA) - Dermot
Weld's 3-year-old is amongst the leading irish candidates for this race, having won at Gowran
Park, Thurles and Leopardstown on Boxing Day. before running respectably in
his last two starts behind Mutineer
and Golden Cross. looks to be held on this form however he might prefer
faster ground and could close the gap if those conditions prevail. ; |
 |
Red Wine - November
Handicap winner Red Wine has made a late bid for glory here having impressed
when winning on his most recent start at Newbury. Conditions should suit him
and his experience on the flat should give him an edge in this big field. It
wouldn't be the biggest surprise if he made a bold big for glory today; |
 |
Saintsaire (FR) - Many
believe the Saintsaire bubble has burst after two disappointing efforts at
Cheltenham and most recently when he finished 5th to Well Chief at Kempton
last month. I'm not sure I agree with that view as I didn't think Kempton's
tight circuit would have been ideal, He has it to do now, however discarding
him may be rather premature; |
 |
Smuggler's Song - A
listed winner on the flat for present connections, Smuggler's Song was thrown
in the deep end on his hurdling debut at Punchestown in January, however he
was far from fluent, eventually finishing 5th to Mutineer, [btn 21 lengths]. Smuggler's Song learned a lot from that run, on
his most recent start over hurdles at Naas, rallying under pressure to pip Statim
on the post, to win by a head. He is relatively unconsidered for this, yet he could be a major player is he translated his flat form to obstacles. One for punters who don't mind taking a chance; |
 |
Well Chief (GER) - Boasted useful group form in Germany prior to joining
Nicholashayne (hence his inclusion in our Future Winners feature) and has
looked useful in landing wins at Taunton and most recently when showing a
good turn of foot to win the Adonis Hurdle at Kempton. He is worthy of the
utmost respect, however doesn't immediately strike me as a "Triumph
Hurdle" horse and whist he's good enough to win this race I personally
think he would be far more interesting if entered in the Supreme Novices
Hurdles; |
¦"OUR VERDICT" ¦:¬»- Plenty
of possibles here however I would limit this down to East Tycoon, Desert Air,
Golden Cross, Harchibald, Lilium De Cotte, Mutineer, Old California, Red Wine,
Saint Cyr, Smugglers Song and Well Chief. Having suggested that Well Chief was
capable of beating his elders, it's difficult to oppose him against his peers
here. Smugglers Song is interesting as is Red Wine, plus Old California, Lilium
De Cotte and
Desert Air who all could run well at good prices.
¦ 1^ ~ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬»- Well
Chief
¦ 2nd Place? ¦:¬»- Smugglers Song
¦ 3rd Place? ¦:¬»-Red Wine
¦ 4th Place? ¦:¬»-Lilian De Cotte (e/w)

¦ "one to jump" ¦ ~~ Are there any horses from "ONE TO JUMP" 2002/3 - Our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the current national hunt season?:¬»-Laveron
& Galileo (POL)
¦ "the rook" ¦:¬»- The Stayers' Hurdle is one of the youngest races at the National Hunt Meeting. It was only introduced in its current form in 1972. Before that, it was the Spa Hurdle, now run at Cheltenham's New Year Meeting... In that time it has been won by some useful types like Brown Lad (1975), Derring Rose (1981), Crimson Embers, (1982), Galmoy (1987-8), Nomadic Way (1992), Dorans Pride, (1995), Cyborgo (1996), Anzum (1999), Bacchanal (2000) and of last season Baracouda...
This does on paper appear to be one of the better renewals .. here are my thoughts on those horses who still stand their ground;
 |
Baracouda (Fr), trained by
François Doumen in France - In light of the criticism Baracouda has got this season, he goes into the race under a cloud where in reality he goes there with as good a chance as he had last
season. Plenty has been made of the two rides Thierry Doumen has given the horse this season only just beating Mr Cool by a neck in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Ascot Hurdle in November, before going down by a
length to old rival Deano's Beeno in the Cantor Sport Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot in December - which in my view is very unfair, as I dont
think the horse is as straightforward a ride as many pundits would have you believe. As good as he is there is no doubt that this horse is very free in his races and needs to be settled early on to get him into a
rhythm.. conversely at the end of his races, he must be delivered as late as possible as he will stop to nothing and put his head in
the air if given the opportunity to [as he was one day Fontwell where he only just beating
Solo Mio]... Like it or not, Thierry Doumen has ridden the horse in most of his races, and plays a significant
role in the preparation of the horse.. He blamed himself for ending Baracouda's winning run by
challenging before the last, and no doubt the tactic employed when he was so impressively when beating Bannow Bay by 1/4 length.. If he is that focused he
will be very hard to beat here; |
 |
Brother Joe (Nz), trained by Philip Hobbs - Soundly
beaten by Deano's Beeno in the Cantor Sport Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot in December, however he is a fast ground horse who on that surface, is capable of posting an effort, which would see him run
respectably... there are [in my view] horses with better chances than him here; |
 |
Catch Ball , trained by Willie
Mullins in Ireland - Catch Ball has not been successful over hurdles since December, 2000, and does not appear to be good enough to win this championship contest. An official rating in the high 120s means that she has ability, but she has finished in the last two places on all of her six most recent outings, including when beaten over 45 lengths by Limestone Lad in the woodiesdiy.com Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown in December .. out of her depth...; |
 |
Chopneyev (Fr), trained by Richard Phillips - Fast improving novice who has stepped up on some mediocre efforts last term to win three times this term including winning a valuable handicap hurdle at Sandown before beating all bar the well-weighted Korelo at Ascot last time out. Gives the impression that he might prefer
further, and the likely strong end-to-end gallop is sure to play to his strengths.. he
doesn't look good enough though; |
 |
Classified, trained by Martin Pipe - Confirmed his
well-being by winning the Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle [gr. 1] and the Collins Stewart National Spirit Hurdle
[gr. 2] by grinding out successes ... He should stay having won over 2m6f, and will certainly be there or
thereabouts, however he'll need to improve of what he's shown so far to land this prize; |
 |
Crazy Horse, trained by Len Lungo - You'd have consider him a few season ago, when he shoed marked
improvement when stepping up in trip, however an injury and the poor form of the
yard would put you off completely; |
 |
Davenport Milenium, trained by Willie
Mullins in Ireland - Supposedly Misses the race due to injury... unproven that he stays the trip; |
 |
Deano's Beeno, trained by Martin Pipe - Given a terrific ride by Tony McCoy when landing the Cantor Sport Long Walk Hurdle
[gr. 1] Deano's Beeno enjoyed an uncontested lead, building up a huge lead, still being around 20 lengths clear of Baracouda leaving Swinley Bottom. Although that horse reeled him in by the final flight, unlike Baracouda, he put his head down and really battled on
the run-in and got the grade 1 success he deserved. As good an effort as that was, the fact that
François Doumen's charge got so close speaks volumes for that horse chance of
reversing the places; |
 |
Galileo (POL), trained by Tom George - Dont
believe he got the credit he deserves for winning last season's Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle [because of Keen
Leader's fall two out] as he failed to get the run of the race, buried on the inside rail and also having to sit and suffer at the top of the hill when
looking wider out for room. He was lucky to get a run through on the unrailed part of the course down the hill and
despite showing sings of greenness, stayed on strongly up the hill to beat Over The Bar by 3½lengths. He is a classy
individual, who should be underestimated, however I do think his chances would have been greater if he
hadn't had an interrupted preparation... the stable's indifferent form is also cause for
concern; |
 |
Iris's Gift, trained by Jonjo
O'Neill - Resolute galloper who grinds his rivals into submission like his stablemate Coolnagorna. Impressive when winning all five starts
over hurdles this season, particularly last time out at Haydock and is worthy of consideration here; |
 |
Lady Laureate, trained by Giles Bravery - .... (sigh!!) |
 |
Laveron, trained by François
Doumen in France - The current French Champion Hurdler is far superior to the horse British punters last saw finishing well behind Galileo at Kempton. He had conditions ideally to suit in France and took full advantage winning the Grande Course de Haies de Printemps (Hurdle), Gras Savoye Hipcover - Prix la Barka (Hurdle)
[gr. 2], Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil (Hurdle) [gr. 1], where he beat Vic Toto by 1½lengths, and most
recently the Grand Prix d'Automne [gr. 1] , [all at Auteuil] where he beat Tiger Groom by a length. He revels in soft/heavy ground, and could be a major player given those
conditions.. his potency is diminishes if the conditions are faster; |
 |
Limestone Lad, trained by James
Bowe in Ireland - A simply remarkable 11-year-old, who has returned this season as good as ever landing the Philips Electronics Lismullen Hurdle
[gr. 2], Morgiana Hurdle [gr. 2], Ballymore Properties Hatton's Grace Hurdle
[gr. 1], Giltspur Scientific Hurdle, and woodiesdiy.com Christmas Hurdle [gr. 2]
to go to 35 career wins. Connections gave him the chance to take the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle
[gr. 1], and he again gave 110% commitment, however just couldn't within the late
challenge of Like-A-Butterfly; only going down by a head... He picked up a viral infection a few weeks ago and is
reportedly back in rude health ...he looks set to give his all again here; |
 |
Native Emperor, trained by Jonjo
O'Neill - Native Emperor is a progressive 7-year-Old, who was a distance back in third behind Deano's Beeno and Baracouda in
the Cantor Sport Long Walk Hurdle [gr. 1], however is a fair bit better than a literal assessment would imply, having been eased once beaten,
and a better reflection of his chance is his excellent second to Bacchanal at Newbury on
Hennessy Cognac Gold cup day. He isn't up to mixing it with the best yet, but is going to make a lovely chaser in
time; |
 |
Over The Bar, trained by Edward
O'Grady in Ireland - Hasn't really progressed since finishing second to Galileo
in last season's Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle, and his second to Emotional Moment in the McCabe Builders Ltd Boyne Hurdle
[gr. 2] doesn't offer up much comfort.. His role here is probably to aide the Chances of Baracouda here. |
 |
Palua, trained by Emma Lavelle -Useful
handicapper on the flat when trained by Ian Balding, who has taken well to hurdles.. that said, he was soundly beaten by Deano's Beeno in the Rendlesham Hurdle
[gr. 2] and will need to improve to win this; |
 |
Rostropovich, trained by Mouse
Morris in Ireland - Was once useful on the flat and over hurdles a few seasons ago, however he
hasn't shown that sort of form of late and his fourth to Emotional Moment in the McCabe Builders Ltd Boyne Hurdle
[gr. 2] doesn't offer up much hope of an imminent return; |
 |
Stromness (Usa), trained by Alan King - A
frustrating horse because he seems to be very difficult to catch right.. He has the ability to run well here, however he is hard to "put up" on
the back of a he was sound beating by Deano's Beeno in the Rendlesham Hurdle
[gr. 2] at Kempton [btn 20lengths] He is probably being trained for this race and might be open to more
improvement, however on recent evidence he'd need to be. |
 |
Sudden Shock (Ger), trained by Jonjo
O'Neill - Was a useful hurdler in his use in Germany and France and proved last term [when
finishing 2lengths behind It takes Time in the Bet.Watch.Live Attheraces Hurdle] that he is capable of putting in a bold run in this sort of
company, however his overall form suggest that he needs to improve to win this; |
 |
The Bajan Bandit, trained by Len Lungo - Looked really promising in his younger days in bumpers and over hurdles, however has been made to look pedestrian in his most recent starts over fences and I can't see how he would be good enough to win this prize on his most recent form...the stable's poor form is hardly a cause for optimism
either; |
 |
Too Forward, trained by Mark Pitman - He was
particularly impressive last term when winning the River Don Novices' Hurdle
[gr. 2] over 3m~½f last season from Stromness by 3lengths, however he was beaten
fair and square when coming seventh to Galileo in last season's Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle, and
hasn't raced since finished well behind Stromness in the Martell Sefton Novices' Hurdle
[gr. 1] at the National Meeting; |
 |
Welsh Border, trained by George Prodromou - I hope he jumps the first in front as at least then he may justify his connections going to the trouble of entering him, however I sincerely hope that connections ensure that Welsh Border lines up away from runners or well enough away to avoid controversy as he could signal the death knell of this kind of sporting entry should he cause trouble at the start, something he has become synonymous with. |
¦"OUR VERDICT" ¦:¬»- A
mouthwatering race on paper which has two possible scenarios: A) Limestone Lad
sets out to make all and is not headed before the last or; B) Limestone
Lad attempts to make all, however is harried by Iris's Gift who's persistent
"nagging" softens him up in the final rush for glory.
Option "B" seems likeliest at the moment and if that were to happen, I
honestly would be disappointed if Barracuda still didn't have the class to
capitalise. Of the others, Galileo and Laveron make plenty of appeal at each-way odds.

¦ "one to jump" ¦ ~~ Are there any horses from "ONE TO JUMP" 2002/3 - Our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the current national hunt season?:¬»-Beef
or Salmon, Keen Leader, Le Coudray (FR) & Bounce Back (USA)
¦ "the rook" ¦:¬»- Fourty-nine horses were entered for this season's renewal of the for the 2003 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, with no shortage of opponents to Best Mate, whose seeks to join an illustrious list of dual winners including L'Escargot, successful in 1970 and 1971, Arkle (1964, 1965 and 1966), Cottage Rake (1948, 1949 and 1950), Golden Miller (1932, 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1936) and Easter Hero (1929 and 1930).
There are currently 22 horses left in the race, however for the first time, there is a supplementary entry stage five days before the race, when horses can be added to the field at a cost of £17,500... there is a
possibility that a few may get entered.. Here anyway is my thoughts on the permutations;
 |
Barton, trained by Tim Easterby - Looked one possible to
follow last term after beating Japhet at Aintree in April, however has struggled to recapture that form this term and was well beaten when third to Il´Athou last time out at Wetherby... will need
to improve out of all proportion to win this. |
 |
Beef Or Salmon, trained by Michael
Hourigan in Ireland - Its along time since a horse has made an impact on his introduction to
steeplechasing .. and its easy to see how Ireland has taken him to their hearts
after his successes this season in the Morris Oil Chase [gr. 2], O'Connell Transport Hilly Way Chase
[gr. 3], Ericsson Chase [gr. 1], and last time out in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup
[gr. 1]. The most striking factor of his efforts is the manner of his successes
.. his pilot Timmy Murphy is content to bide his time at the rear of the field,
allowing Beef Or Salmon to get into a fine relaxed rhythm. He then allows him to cruise into the race, conserving a telling turn of foot for the final straight. He needs to improve to win... the bare form of his run at
Leopardstown wouldnt be quite good enough, however he is a outstanding novice, who has the potential to do this ... and he should be considered accordingly; |
 |
Behrajan, trained by Henry Daly - Behrajan goes into the race in good heart having landed the cantorsport.co.uk Silver Cup Handicap Chase (Listed Race), as well as the Pillar Property Chase
[gr. 2]. He put up a decent front running display but as Bacchanal fell fatally at the eighth as did Cyfor Malta six fences later, this told us little new. He will go for the Gold Cup with a similar chance to last year, when he was pulled up after making several bad mistakes, and the likely bigger field will once again put his jumping under a lot more pressure. He also stopped up the hill dramatically which is a little disconcerting; |
 |
Best Mate, trained by Henrietta Knight - The favourite..
justifiably after successes in the McCallum Corporate Consulting Peterborough Chase
[gr. 2] where he beat Douze Douze by 8 lengths, and the Pertemps King George VI Chase
[gr. 1], where he stayed on bravely to beat Malborough by 1 ½ lengths.... He has sound claims here, however I dont
believe he is the "good thing" some suggest he is .. I think the formbook states this... If you doubt this have a good look at the form of last season's race... whilst he is being
shoveled with exaltation its worth noting that he beat Moscow Society by 22lengths, who apart from winning
a minor race at Navan, has been well beaten since... Malborough who was fourth that day nearly beat him at Kempton, and
showed how hard a race that was by letting the form down behind Valley Henry at
Newbury and Commanche Court who he beat 1 ½lengths struggled to beat King's Valley [a horse that
hadn't won since April '01]... I wouldnt rule all another success [far from it], however I dont
believe that he is the good thing that everybody seems to be telling punters he is; |
 |
Bounce Back (Usa), trained by Martin Pipe -
Hasn't really shown anything since running away with the Attheraces Gold Cup Chase Showcase Handicap
[gr. 3] at the end of last season, however we know that this is a good horse [from his
exploits in France, as well as at Sandown] and his record suggests that he should improve in
the spring.... finding the necessary improvement to win this is an entirely different
matter; |
 |
Chives, trained by Henrietta Knight - Improved performer who posted one of the
best effort I've seen in recent seasons when only just failing to carry 11st 12lbs in the Welsh Grand National. He was upped in class in the Aon Chase
[gr. 2], where he acquitted himself really well, getting within 2½ lengths of the winner Valley Henry.. must have
significant cut in the ground or else he wouldnt run.. he'd be interesting if the
conditions changed into his favour; |
 |
Colonel Braxton, trained by Dessie
Hughes in Ireland - Has had a good season winning the Normans Grove Chase (Listed Race) at Fairyhouse in January, as well as
finishing second to Beef or Salmon in the Ericsson Chase [gr. 1], and last time out in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup
[gr. 1]. He will need to improve to figure here, however you wouldnt rule out the possibility of that happening; |
 |
Commanche Court, trained by Ted
Walsh in Ireland - I dont know what to make of him... he made fairly heavy weather of gaining his first win for the best part of three years, last time out at Navan, especially as the winner Kings valley was 14lbs "wrong" in the
handicap. The ground is however in his favour and he did at least show enthusiasm in getting up to seize the initiative in the closing stages... He
isn't at the head of the list of possible.. however he wasn't last season; |
 |
Cyfor Malta (Fr), trained by Martin Pipe - I thought Cyfor Malta's
success in the Thomas Pink Gold Cup Chase [gr. 3] was amongst the best of his efforts so far in his career, and its a
pity that he fell in the Pillar Chase, as you'd have hd a better gauge of what realistically
his chances of success were here... He will come here a relatively fresh horse, and he must have at the very least eachway
pretensions; |
 |
First Gold (Fr) , trained by
François Doumen in France - Seems to be a pale shadow of the horse that won
the 2000 King George VI Chase [gr. 1] with such authority.... a few nagging injuries has blighted his
progress and he'd need to improve on his 10length third to See More Business last time out to
figure here... a word of caution before you completely dismiss him First Gold
hasn't looked as fit as he did when winning at Kempton and Aintree [he been carrying
a noticeable amount of condition]. François and Thierry Doumen do keep stating that there is better to come, if he looked "spot on" in the paddock he might become a very interesting eachway bet. |
 |
Florida Pearl, trained by Willie
Mullins in Ireland - It seems as though connections have sorted out the niggling ailments that this horse has endured this season and he may be heading back to the Festival. To have got within 17½lengths of Best Mate in the King George VI Chase, when the stable is completely out of sorts is
probably confirmation that he horse still retains his ability, however he has struggled to win this before and its hard to
be confident now, though being totally unconsidered he may represent on the day a very good eachway
bet; |
 |
Foly Pleasant (Fr), trained by Henrietta Knight - Foly
Pleasant stepped out of handicap company last time behind Behrajan in the Pillar Property Chase
[gr. 2] and didn't disgrace himself, getting within 14lengths of the winner ... He'll
probably run if the heavens open and probably wouldnt disgrace himself if that occurred.. though he
isn't an obvious winner; |
 |
Fondmort (Fr), trained by Nicky Henderson - Has had a good
season this term, winning the Triple Gold Cup at Cheltenham in December, however he
didn't appear to stay when seventh to La Landiere in the Racing Post Chase Showcase Handicap
[gr. 3] last time out at Kempton and would have to ne be considered very unlikely to try his luck here; |
 |
Go Ballistic, trained by Richard Phillips -
Hasn't really shown much since making Malborough pull out all the stops in the
Tote Gold Trophy Chase [gr. 1]... however he's done that before and then bounced
back... Father Time probably has caught up with him - however I'd like him to go out
with a solid performance; |
 |
Harbour Pilot, trained by Noel Meade in
Ireland - Hasn't won since landing the Dr.P.J.Moriarty Novice Chase [gr. 1] in April '02,
however he has posted solid efforts in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup Chase Showcase Handicap
[gr. 3], and the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup [gr. 1], where he finished 4lengths behind Beef or Salmon... Needs to improve to win this and he does have a habit of "missing" one out when placed under pressure; |
 |
Hussard Collonges (Fr) , trained by Peter Beaumont - There
are many that believe that Hussard Collonges has the ability to win this and having watched him run gallantly in defeat in the Peterhouse Group Charlie Hall Chase
[gr. 2], Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup Chase [gr. 3], and Bet Direct Peter Marsh Chase
[gr. 2] I can see the appeal... He is 110% commitment.. and always gives his all... I do wonder whether he has that might actually be his downfall, in that whilst he will make
a lot of his rivals hurts, he has so far this term managed to be passed by at least one, who has
possessed a little bit much acceleration than he did at the end of his races. His trainers know what it takes to win this and the fact they are confident he can prevail does in
itself breeds confidence and you get the impression that a b post a "big run".. is his 110%
commitment going to be good enough? |
 |
It Takes Time ,
trained by Martin Pipe - At
the time of writing, It Takes Time still holds an entry for the Gold Cup and
to be honest, would be better served racing here.
Although there aren't many miles on the clock, He is 9 years old
and won't have very many more opportunities to run in the race. He has
taken to fences extremely well and has been particularly impressive in
winning last time out at Haydock, where he thrashed The Bajan Bandit by
9lengths [heavily eased, probably would have won by 30lengths]. The fact that he was left in the Aon Chase at the
five day stage suggests strongly to me that connections are still toying
with the idea of racing him and from a handicap point of view, he
would be better off racing there as if he were not good enough, the
handicapper will reflect that rather than taking an over-inflated view of his performance
should he win the Sun Alliance... I dont think he'd disgrace himself should
he run. |
 |
Keen Leader, trained
by Jonjo O'Neill -
Gorgeous 7-year-old son of Supreme Leader, built in the old-fashioned mould
of chasers who has done absolutely nothing wrong over fences and was
particularly impressive when winning at Wetherby before benefiting from the
departure 4 out of Jaïr Du Cochet in the Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot. It's
difficult to know what would have happened that day because Keen Leader was
fiddling his way round and has yet to demonstrate that he can show the
"gears" that for example other opponents have demonstrated when
winning this season. That said, there is no doubt in my mind that he is
"from the top drawer" and like It Takes Time wouldnt be without a
chance if he ran here; |
 |
Le Coudray (FR), trained by Christy Roche in Ireland - Has an almost identical profile to It Takes Time in that he is a former top-class hurdler who doesn't have very many miles on the clock (having missed 3 seasons through injury) and he looked good when landing the Pierse Group Drinmore Novice Chase
[gr. 1] at Fairyhouse and the Denny Gold Medal Novice Chase [gr. 1] at Leopardstown. Connections, because of his age must be tempted to have a go here, especially as we know that the trip shouldn't be too much of a problem (he probably should have won the Stayers Hurdle 4 years ago had he been given a more attacking ride when swinging off the bridle when turning for home). However, I wonder how keen they would be to do that on the back of a fall in the Dr. P.J. Moriarty Novice Chase
[gr. 1], where he was upsides Barrow Drive at the last, and it now seems that connections are more keen to go for the Cathcart...That
probably is very sensible, however I'd respect him if he were to line up here. |
 |
Macs Gildoran, trained by Willie
Mullins in Ireland - I know connections
hold him in high regard, however it's difficult to get enthused about a
horse who has won a handicap off of a mark of 121 and he appears to have
some way to go before he is capable of performing at this level; |
 |
Marlborough , trained by Nicky Henderson -
Definitely enters calculations on his good second to Best Mate in the King George VI Chase
[gr. 1], however you have to forgive him a poor effort in the Aon Chase where he was
beaten when falling at the last behind Valley Henry... The Kempton effort clearly had left a mark, however he is far better shape than
when coming fourth last year and should again have the race run to suit his ... definitely one to
consider; |
 |
Modulor (Fr), trained by Yannick Fertillet in
France - Modulor has won many races in France and does have little pieces of form which is other
company you may just give him a second look... however he's shown nothing to suggest that he can win here and I presume he is
using this a platform for a possible tilt at the grand national; |
 |
Rince Ri, trained by Ted Walsh in Ireland
- Rince Ri recorded his first win since last season's Pillar Property Chase, when
beating Takagi in the Bobbyjo Chase [gr. 3] at Fairyhouse in February, however he
hasn't been in the same sort of form and has it all to do to reverse Ericsson
Chase form with Beef or Salmon ... a win is unlikely however you wouldnt be surprised
if he were to run creditably; |
 |
Royal Auclair (Fr) , trained by Martin Pipe - Royal Auclair is in
the grip of the handicapper, and is proving difficult to place, however he didn't run too badly behind Valley Henry in the Aon Chase [gr. 2], perversely giving 4lbs to that rivals ... that
wasn't a bad effort, however he needs to improve here and isn't certain to
stay; |
 |
Sackville , trained by Frances Crowley in
Ireland - Has been in much better form of late and gained a deserved success in
the Tommy Whittle Chase [gr. 2] at Haydock in December.. that said he has been soundly
beaten by Beef or Salmon in the Ericsson Chase [gr. 1], and last time out in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup
[gr. 1] and its difficult seeing him change that trend here; |
 |
See More Business, trained by Paul Nicholls - After
disappointing at Down Royal in November, you can argue that See More Business has done nothing wrong, and advertise
his claims here when making all to beat Irish Bleu and First Gold in the Country Gentlemen's Association Chase (Listed Race) .. I dont want to crab the
effort, however Iris Bleu is probably better with more time between his races, and First Gold clearly can be got fitter, that
said See More Business had his rivals on the stretch throughout and deserves
another shot for Gold, where it will be no surprise if he makes the frame again. |
 |
Skippers Cleuch , trained by Lenny
Lungo - Former useful Novice Hurdler who has been nursed back to health by Lenny Lungo to win two of his three starts. He has yet to encounter opposition of this calibre and is unproven
at the trip... has it all to do here; |
 |
Stormez (FR), trained by Martin Pipe - Has proved to be far more shrewd a purchase than when some pundits originally suggested when getting trounced on his first two starts in this country as a result of being given an entry in last year's Champion on the strength of some useful performances in France over hurdles. He has since shown that staying is his forte and has been well placed by connections
to win seven races this season over trips between 2m~7½f and 4 miles. He isn't the obvious candidate, with there not being much of him however what he lacks in scope he more than makes up for in heart. I believe his is being aimed for the 4-miler at this meeting, however he probably wouldn't disgrace himself if he were allowed to take his chance here instead; |
 |
Truckers Tavern , trained by Ferdy Murphy - Has had a good
second season over fences, culminating in his victory in the Bet Direct Peter Marsh Chase (Limited Handicap)
[gr. 2] and a fair third placing behind Valley Henry in the Aon Chase [gr. 2]
at Newbury... He has plenty to find to win this however I do think this horse is being brought along to peak at the Festival and its
conceivable that there is more improvement to come... I wouldnt readily dismiss his chances
here; |
 |
Valley Henry, trained by Paul Nicholls - On fast ground, he looks like a king.. however he
can't replicate those efforts of a soft surface , so its safe to assume that his win in
the Aon Chase is the best reflection of his chances of success here... I have one major reservation.. For all his talent he has yet to
demonstrate bottle, especially in competitive races like this and you wouldnt
exactly be surprised if he shirks the issue here, especially when its clear the race is going to hurt from a long way
out... the coin's in the air with him...; |
 |
You're Agoodun, trained by Martin Pipe - ran
a great race to finish second in the in the Bet Direct Peter Marsh Chase (Limited Handicap)
[gr. 2] at Haydock, last time out having looked all over the winner two from home... looks outclassed here. but would have claims in one of the handicaps |
As we highlighted before, there is [for the first time] a supplementary stage for this race we don’t know who may enter for sure, however here are a couple of candidates.
 |
Iris Bleu (FR) - Ever since he ran away with the Agfa Diamond Chase, I was hoping that connections would tread carefully with him and consider entering him, especially as he acts on the course and does travel well through his races. To have been beaten 9lengths by See More Business at Wincanton was no disgrace and he acquitted himself well at Haydock ten days ago, hitting a flat spot before staying on strongly to finish a good third to Shotgun Willy... I think he's best fresh, so connection should give serious consideration to giving him a break before Aintree, however if they did have a go here instead of the national, i wouldn’t be surprised if he ran well. |
 |
Jaïr Du Cochet (FR) - Dont worry, if you've backed him for the Sun
Alliance... your money's still running, however I'm surprised that He hasn't
been entered here, especially as he has already indicated his "precocious-ness", and may not have as many years
left at the top as his age may indicate; |
 |
La Landiere (FR) - As progressive as Iris Bleu this season and have impressed when winning her last five starts culminating in an impressive win in
the Racing Post Chase... when horses are this sort of roll, who knows what peaks they may rise to and I think connections are very wise to be considering running here instead of the Cathcart. |
¦"OUR VERDICT" ¦:¬»- I
think we've made it clear that it is feasible to oppose Best Mate here, however
just exactly what you take him on with is not clear as I think punter have to
decide whether or not to stick with the old guard or the new kids on the block.
As good as I think Beef Or Salmon is, I wouldn't be overly keen to back him at
around 7/2 and I'd be inclined to look for something at a much bigger price. The
bookies are certainly tempting you to go with the old with See More Business
being offered at 20/1 and Marlborough (who nearly beat Best Mate in the King
George) for some reason being offered at 25/1. However it isn't difficult to
imagine Hussard Collonges not running well at around 9/1 or for that matter Keen
Leader who would probably be offered in double figures or the selection It Takes
Time who connections haven't even declared yet for the race who I think is
massively overpriced at 33/1. Why do I think he can win this? To be honest I'm
not 100% certain he can, however I do know he is a lightly raced former Grade 2
winning hurdler who has taken extremely well to fences and posted and impressive
an effort over fences last time as you wish to see. The race is going to be run
to suit him and I can imagine connections allowing him to creep into the race to
obtain the best possible position. Exactly the same as Beef Or Salmon will
attempt to do. If all goes well, it's quite possible he could be in a
challenging position two from home, and I would hope his class was good enough
to see him get into the first four, which is why I suggest this sporting bet is
only done for each-way money. In the event that It Takes Time doesn't run, then
Beef Or Salmon would be the selection, although at the current price I wouldn't
personally back him .

¦ "one to jump" ¦ ~~ Are there any horses from "ONE TO JUMP" 2002/3 - Our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the current national hunt season?:¬»-Kingscliff
¦ "the rook" ¦:¬»- The Foxhunters Chase is one of the oldest races at
the Festival, first being run in 1904. It is the richest Hunter Chase of the
season and is regularly used to gauge the best performer in this discipline each
season. Forty-one horses have been entered for this year's renewal which in the
main consists of a lot of familiar faces although there area couple of new kids
on the block. In our view, the main contenders for this prize are as follows:
 |
Bright Approach - In
good form this season having already posted two successes, Bright Approach
excels in long distance hunter chases as he proved when winning the
four-miler here at the May hunter chase meeting. I've been taken by his
performances this season (it's possible he may have improved since last
season) and I'd be very hopeful of him giving a good account of himself; |
 |
County Derry - Fifth
in this race last year and is already in winning form this season, however
he will need to improve to better last season's effort; |
 |
Doran's Pride - Now
14, the 1995 Stayers Hurdle winner is enjoying semi-retirement in this
company. He was a good 2nd to Sheltering last time out however I do believe
Father Time has now caught up with him though it will be a pleasure to see
him at his 7th festival; |
 |
Earthmover - The 1998
winner has returned to hunter chasing after a successful period in Handicap
company. Victories at Wetherby and Chepstow show he still retains ability
and would have to be respected should he line up here; |
 |
Joe Blake - 4th in
last years renewal having gone into the race arguably as Ireland's No. 1
hope having impressed when winning at Leopardstown a year ago. Has been
difficult to get right this season however the fact that he appears suggests
that connections are satisfied that he is capable of bettering last season's
effort; |
 |
Kingscliff - Unbeaten
so far in 4 starts, our one-to-jump hope has decent claims here having
impressed many an onlooker when putting 30 length between himself and family
business on his hunter chase debut in February before sensibly going to
Milbourne St Andrew rather than another hunter chase to qualify for this
race. I'm very excited about the long-term prospects of this gorgeous
six-year-old. That said, I hope he isn't placed on a pedestal at such a
tender age because at the moment, for all his talent he is still quite
immature; |
 |
Last Option - I don't
wish to be critical, and I accept that this isn't the connections fault
however, how on earth was it necessary for the defending champion of this
race to need to have to have to finish in the first 2 to qualify for this
race? If winning a championship race doesn't guarantee you winning anything,
then what is the point apart from of course, prestige? It might not have
done him any harm, but you wouldn't have suggested it was an ideal
preparation to defend your crown. His saving grace is that ground conditions
are currently perfect; |
 |
Quetal - Has
progressed through the point-to-point ranks to become a useful hunter chaser
as demonstrated by smooth successes at Aintree last season and more recently
at Newbury last time out. Probably has a bit to find but may
well be capable of that improvement; |
 |
Sheltering -
Ireland's leading hunter chaser for the last few seasons, however has yet to
finish in this race. Proved this season at Punchestown and Leopardstown that
he is as good as ever. Punters will need to decide whether they believe
current odds reflect his chances of getting around; |
 |
Son Of Anshan -
Entitled to be considered on his 3rd place behind Torduff Express in the
Martell Foxhunters at Aintree last season, however his overall form suggests
he may not be good enough; |
 |
Spot Thedifference
- Another horse returning to hunter chasing after showing useful bits
of form in handicap company. Enda Bolger knows what's required to get one
ready and his chances therefore would have to be respected; |
 |
Torduff Express -
Third in this race last year, Torduff Express went on to land the Aintree
equivalent in good style and has been in good form again this season,
winning on his most recent start at Fontwell last month. Should again give a
good account of himself; |
 |
Trade Dispute - Broke
the heart of many a punter when getting pipped close home by Cavalero in the
2000 running of this race. Trade Dispute has been struggling to recapture
that sort of form and ran atrociously on his seasonal reappearance at
Wetherby. He did get a confidence boosting win last weekend between the
flags however there will surely be plenty of punters who will question
whether he can reach those lofty peaks again.; |
 |
Viaduct - Has
finished "in the money" in each of his races to date this season,
however since he has been well-beaten by a lot of the leading Irish
candidates, you'd be tempted to dismiss him out of hand. Anybody who watched
him come from an absolute impossible position to almost land the John
Corbett Cup at Stratford last June might believe that this horse could yet
still be capable of causing a surprise; |
 |
What Odds - Tom
Gerratty's seven-year-old is a four-time winning point-to-pointer who had been pulled up on his racecourse debut in a hunters' chase won by Shackleton at Clonmel, before impressing on next time out when
beating a useful field at Fairyhouse 2 weeks ago. Probably has plenty to do here, however looks the sort to take high rank in the Irish division over the next couple of years. |
¦"OUR VERDICT" ¦:¬»- This
looks a good renewal and you can expect the likes of Earthmover, last option and
Sheltering to run well here, however it's difficult to get away from Kingscliff
and if he handles this step-up in class, should be very difficult to beat.
Bright Approach makes plenty of appeal at each-way odds.

(GER) & Palarshan (FR)
¦ "the rook" ¦:¬»- This years renewal of the Grand Annual has
attracted 54 entries of whom the following have been singled out for
consideration:
 |
Kadarann
(12st
8lbs)- I cannot believe for a second that connections would even contemplate
for a second running him off this weight. |
 |
Eskleybrook (11st
8lbs)- Has paid for those wins at Sandown at Kempton and for all his rider's
enthusiasm, he does appear to have plenty on his plate here. |
 |
Young Devereaux
(11st 6lbs)- Fragile, but talented
chaser who outbattled Seebald to land the Victor Chandler chase at Ascot in
January. Pulled up swiftly when still in with a chance last time out at
Ascot (I believe connections said that he knocked himself), however that
form should not be taken literally and he would be interesting if allowed to
take his chance today. |
 |
Armaturk (FR) (11st
4lbs)-Hasn't quite developed into the two-mile chaser that many of us
believed that he would during last season, however as he proved when winning
last time out, he still retains plenty of ability. Has a respectable weight
here however could be vulnerable to novices or improving types. |
 |
Dark'N Sharp
(GER)(11st 0lbs)-Hasn't built on the promise shown at the back end of last season when you thought the sky probably was the limit. His third to Rooster Booster over hurdles in November was buy far his best effort to date this season and as much as I like him, I'd have
wanted more to have full confidence in him... stable are going through a good
spell at present. |
 |
Exit Swinger (FR)
(10st 12lbs)- Usually runs well here however when was the last time he won a
race? |
 |
Epervier D'Or (FR)
(10st 9lbs)-Looked really promising early on in the season, however seems to
have gone off the boil and may have had enough for this season. Time is on
his side; |
 |
Shamawan
(10st
9lbs)-Useful 2-miler who appeared to show improved form when chasing home
Lady Cricket here in January. Travels sweetly during his races and should go
well if not inconvenienced by this step back in trip; |
 |
Fadoudal De Cochet
(FR) (10st 6lbs)- Useful handicapper on his day as he proved when winning
this event 12 months ago. Was a good 2nd in his most recent start in Ireland
and should still be capable of a bold bid here. |
 |
Got One Too (FR)
(10st 6lbs)- Has looked promising this season however was thrashed by Azertyuiop
at Wincanton two starts ago and may have been a fortuitous winner
last time out. Claymore was going well when falling 3 out. |
 |
Europa (10st 4lbs)-
I don't think Europa has fulfilled the promise that many pundits thought he
showed in his younger days. However, that is (in my view) partly because
connections seem to be quite happy to run him over 2 - 2 1/2 miles when he
gives the impression that a step-up in trip would bring about further
improvement. He has already confirmed that he still retains a lot of his
ability however despite racing here off an attractive mark, I would still be
concerned that he may not have enough speed to win this sort of race at this
level...however I'm prepared to accept that in his case, I could be wrong |
 |
Killultagh Storm
(10st 3lbs)-"Morning Glory) - who was flattered to deceive on many occasions. He was 6th in this race last year and
realistically looking at a
similar position this time around. |
 |
Vol Solitaire (FR)
(10st 3lbs)-Useful juvenile hurdler from last season who is developing into
an equally useful novice chaser. Has looked good when winning four of his
six starts including his last start at Kelso at the end of last month. Looks
favourably treated off of this handicap mark and would be interesting if
connections ran him here instead of the Arkle Challenge Trophy. |
 |
Ross Moff
(9st
12lbs)-Former useful novice chaser
who is struggling to regain former glories. In a lot of cases, you'd
probably dismiss his chances out of hand, however he hails from one of the
shrewdest yards around and if they believe he still retains his ability, you
have to take notice and listen (personally makes more appeal in this
than in the Mildmay Of Flete). |
 |
Hitman
(9st
8lbs)- Useful but fragile hurdler who has been tried over fences this
season. Could creep into the handicap proper here, however he has been
noticeably deliberate at some of his obstacles in his races this season and
a replication of this at this level could potentially be fatal. |
 |
Palarshan (FR) (9st
8lbs) - Another good advert for Czech racing as he'd won a hurdle race
there before being picked up by present connections in France. He has
developed into a useful Novice this season and a win last time out at
Leicester will leave him going into this with his confidence sky-high. |
 |
Log On Intersky
(9st 7lbs)- Useful novice chaser who goes into this race having one four out
of his last seven contests. The stable know what is required of him to win
in this company and he would have to be considered if connections went for
this. |
 |
Lord Grey
(9st
7lbs)- Useful Irish handicap hurdler/chaser who has been in good form
of late, winning two of his last three races. Talking a step up in grade
here and might be found wanting when push inevitably comes to shove. |
¦"OUR VERDICT" ¦:¬»- Paul
Nichols appears to have a stranglehold on this race with Young Devereux,
Armaturk, Epervier D'Or and Vol Solitaire all appearing to be reasonably
weighted. All however do hold alternative engagements and should they run
elsewhere before this, I wouldn't be so keen. With that thought in mind,
Fadoudal De Cochet, Got One Too and Palarshan appeal as this appears to be their
intended target and I would be interesting in the last-named if he manages to
creep into the handicap proper. Dark N'Sharp who has chances on last season's
form and Europa (who I still believe is running over the wrong trip) make
limited each-way appeal.

something new every day). It is without doubt the hardest race to call at this
stage because despite the small number of entries, the list invariably consists
of horses specifically aimed at the race as well as others who for whatever
reason have fallen by the wayside during the meeting. Forty-six horses were
declared this year, including 11 from Ireland and 1 from Germany and it's quite
possible you could list ten and still due to changes in plan not find the
winner. With that caveat conveniently put in place, these are the horses who at
first glance make most appeal:
 |
Colonel Braxton (11st
12lbs) - Has had a good season winning the Normans Grove Chase (Listed Race) at Fairyhouse in January, as well as finishing second to Beef or Salmon in the Ericsson Chase [gr. 1], and last time out in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup [gr. 1]. He has plenty of weight, however does have the
class to carry it, and could be worth a second look if he came here instead of running in
the Gold Cup |
 |
Fondmort (11st
12lbs)-Has had a good season this term, winning the Triple Gold Cup at Cheltenham in December, however he didn't appear to stay when seventh to La Landiere in the Racing Post Chase Showcase Handicap [gr. 3] last time out at Kempton and
appears to have an impossible task with that rival again here |
 |
Royal Auclair (11st
12lbs) -Royal Auclair is in the grip of
the handicapper, and is proving difficult to place, however he didn't run
too badly behind Valley Henry in the Aon Chase [gr. 2], perversely giving
4lbs to that rivals ... that wasn't a bad effort, however is badly favoured
by the weights here; |
 |
Valley Henry (11st
12lbs) -On fast ground, he looks like a king.. however he can't replicate those efforts of a soft surface , so its safe to assume that his win in the Aon Chase is the best reflection of his chances of success here... For all his talent [and wins], he has yet to demonstrate bottle, especially in competitive races like this, and you wouldnt exactly be surprised if he shirks the issue here, even though this looks easier than
the Gold Cup. |
 |
Chicuelo (11st 3lbs)
- Chicuelo (FR) - Has looked good when the pressure wasn't applied this season in winning at Market Rasen, Ascot and Huntingdon, however has twice jumped poorly when upped in grade and
was well behind La Landiere in the Racing Post Chase at Kempton.. didn't run
any sort of race that day, however still looks to be unfavorably treated by
these weights |
 |
Dark N'Sharp (GER)
(11st 3lbs)-Hasn't built on the promise shown at the back end of last season when you thought the sky probably was the limit. His third to Rooster Booster over hurdles in November was buy far his best effort to date this season and as much as I like him, I'd have
wanted more to have full confidence in him... stable are going through a good
spell at present. |
 |
Hand Inn Hand (11st
3lbs) - Hasn't looked back since being given the perfect introduction to fencing (some today would call it "non-trying"...I disagree) and has rattled off a hat-trick of wins, most recently when making all at Kempton last month. Improving all the time and merits the highest consideration here; |
 |
Keen Leader (11st
3lbs)-Built in the old-fashioned mould of chasers, Keen Leader has done absolutely nothing wrong over fences and was particularly impressive when winning at Wetherby before benefiting from the departure 4 out of Jaïr Du Cochet in the Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot. More
likely to go for the Sun Alliance Chase or Gold Cup, than this, however would go close were he to be rerouted here |
 |
Le Coudray (11st
3lbs)- Former top-class hurdler who doesn't have very many miles on the clock (having missed 3 seasons through injury) and he looked good when landing the Pierse Group Drinmore Novice Chase [gr. 1] at Fairyhouse and the Denny Gold Medal Novice Chase [gr. 1] at Leopardstown. Connections, because of his age must be tempted to have a go at the Gold Cup, but because of the fall may instead come
here... which probably is very sensible, I'd respect his claims if he were to line up here |
 |
Tarxien
(11st 3lbs)-Impossible to fault having won three of his four starts this
term, his only defeat coming as a result of a last-fence blunder over 2 ½
miles where he only just failed to get back up past Joss Naylor. He has
sound claims here and would have to be respected if connections plump for
this as his target at the meeting. |
 |
Youlneverwalkalone
(11st 3lbs)-Finally starting to fulfill some of the promise shown over
hurdles in his youth, Youlneverwalkalone has looked good in winning at
Thurles over 3 miles in December and most recently at Leopardstown in
January where he stayed on under pressure to beat Foxchapel King. He hasn't
always convinced in a finish, however should certainly be entertained
particularly as this race does look like it might cut up. |
 |
Stars
Out Tonight (11st 0lbs)- Lightly-raced this campaign winning twice from his
last 3 starts most recently when winning over 3m1f at Wincanton last month.
Is open to plenty of improvement however is biting off a bit more than it
can chew here. |
 |
La
Landiere (10st 12lbs)-A progressive mare, who has impressed when winning her
last five starts culminating in an impressive win in the Racing Post Chase
at Kempton last month... Connections are considering the Cathcart Challenge
Chase at the moment [instead of the Gold Cup, which I would have done
win lose or draw]. Looks particularly well-treated here and should go well
(as long as this isn't once too often to the well). |
 |
Vol
Solitaire (10st 11lbs)-Useful juvenile hurdler from last season who is
developing into an equally useful novice chaser. Has looked good when
winning four of his six starts including his last start at Kelso at the end
of last month. However, he has looked suspect at this level
and I'm not convinced this is his optimum trip. |
¦"OUR VERDICT" ¦:¬»- There
will be a rush of activity for La Landiere here however beware I get the
distinct impression, listening to trainer Richard Phillips that the reason she
may be running here instead of the Gold Cup is that she may have done enough for
the season. Should that be the case, she could struggle here despite being
well-weighted and I can imagine the likes of Le Coudray, Tarxien, Colonel
Braxton and Youlneverwalkalone making life difficult. I'd be prepared to take
here on and despite conceding weight, I wouldn't be surprised if Le Coudray's
class didn't see him home here.

¦ "the rook" ¦:¬»- The final race of the meeting is the
ultra-competitive County Hurdle...the last opportunity for punters to add to
their winnings or dig themselves out of the pit they dug for themselves over the
past two days. As usual, there are plenty of horses with chances, and here are
those we've singled out for consideration:
 |
Santenay (FR) (11st
12lbs)-)_ trained by Paul Nicholls. Ran an excellent race behind Intersky
Falcon at Kempton at Christmas which entitles him to be seriously considered
here from having to carry top-weight has its disadvantage, the most obvious
that he is vulnerable to an improver rising from the other end of the
handicap. |
 |
Copeland (11st 7lbs)-Connections
have sussed the best way to get the best out of this temperamental
character... He is definitely best by Had an impossible task in the Tote
Gold Trophy, but having looked disinterested made smooth progress up the
straight to be just behind the leaders two out.. eased when beaten, Copeland
will improved significantly on this and should noted if connections decide
to come here instead of the Champion Hurdle |
 |
Sacundai (11st
2lbs)- Decent novice hurdler last season who has won two from three this term, including the Bank Of Ireland Hurdle at Naas in January, as well as the Red Mills Trial Hurdle (Grade 2) from Liss A Paoraigh at
Gowran Park last month... a class act, who despite his big weight, warrants close
consideration here. |
 |
Westender (FR) (11st
1lb)- Definitely is entitled to consideration in this lineup, having
finished third to flame creek, beaten by 3 ½ lengths here at the beginning
of January. He was tenderly handled that day and given that solid effort,
and the improved form shown by Flame Creek, you can see why connections have
left him in this event. A replication of some of his best efforts of last
term could see him post a good effort here. |
 |
Never (FR) (10st
11lbs)- Surprised connections didn't consider the Champion Hurdle for him,
having won so impressively at Newbury in November before finishing a
respectable 3rd to Rooster Booster in the Bula Hurdle. Owner Sir Peter
O'Sullevan is as shrewd as they come so the fact that he has been aimed here
surely has to be considered a tip in itself, or does it? ; |
 |
Tucacas (FR) (10st
9lbs) -
On her day, she is one of the better mares currently in training as
demonstrated by her win here in November. She cut very little ice on her
last engagement however will have been sweetened up with this or the Coral
Cup in mind. You have to respect her if connections allow her to take her
chance; |
 |
Spirit Leader
(10st 9lbs)- Jessica Harrington has gone on record as saying that this
mare is best receiving weight against decent opposition rather than
conceding weight against lesser types. With those comments in mind, whilst
you cannot question the excellence of her form shown when winning the Tote
Gold Trophy at Newbury last time out, you'd fear she may have plenty to do
at these terms today. |
 |
Scolardy
(10st
9lbs)-Last season's winner of the JCB Triumph Hurdle hails from a stable
struggling for consistency. He did look good when slamming New Hall by 11
lengths last term and might just post a respectable effort without being
good enough to get in that vital blow. |
 |
Non So (FR) (10st
7lbs)- Improving 2nd season hurdler who ran a great race in defeat behind
Spirit Leader at Newbury last time out. Expect another solid run here but is
now creeping up the handicap; |
 |
The Gatherer (10st 7lbs)-
Useful come-from-behind hurdler has a terrible time this season, falling in
3 of his 4 races. Would have to be respected on last season's form however
that would have to be taken on trust; |
 |
Chauvinist (10st
7lbs)-Looked decent when winning his first two starts at Ascot
including the valuable Ladbroke (Handicap Hurdle), however failed to fire
after being raised in the weights in the Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury. Has
the potential to run well given ideal conditions and a strong pace; |
 |
Comex Flyer (10st 4lbs)-
Has won his fair share of races this season. Paul Nichol's runner merits
consideration here because the near-certain end-to-end gallop will (in my
opinion) play to his strengths; |
 |
Say Again (10st
4lbs)- Has been a little disappointing over fences of late however comes
into the reckoning if still capable of replicating the form shown when
winning the Galway Hurdle last August; |
 |
Dream With Me (FR)
(10st 3lbs) - Vastly improved this season since joining Nicholashayne after disappointing last season when trained by Charlie Edgerton. Martin Pipe has done well to win five races with him this season, however may now be just in
the grip of the handicapper here; |
 |
Emotional Moment
(10st 3lbs)- Vastly improved irish handicapper who stepped in grade to land the McCabe Builders Ltd Boyne Hurdle (Grade 2) at Navan last time out. His only defeat this season was at the
handicap of Xenophon in the Pierse Hurdle, however he meets that rival on more
favourable terms here and certainly has to go onto the shortlist here; |
 |
Full Irish (10st
3lbs)- Ran up a string of successes last season for Lenny Lungo, however
despite having shown similar form this season, it's difficult to get
involved in horses from a yard so badly out of form; |
 |
Image De Marque II
(FR)(10st 3lbs)- Nicely treated on the pick of her form last season, however
for the second time in her career took a crashing fall, which may well have
affected her confidence.... Probably best to see how she is on the day,
though she does have a chance here. |
 |
Calladine
(10st
2lbs)- Formerly useful hurdler who has been struggling to return to
something near his best. He didn't run too badly when third to Sacundai last
time out at Gowran Park. However, will need a little bit more to be able to
finish prominently here. |
 |
Mister McGoldrick
(10st 1lbs)- Sue Smith's improving handicapper has been a model of
consistency this season including running respectably behind Flame Creak in
the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock. He has a high cruising speed which
should stand him in good stead in this company. |
 |
Camden Tanner
(10st 0lbs)-A model of consistency this season who has finished in the frame
on each of 3 starts to date. Lost nothing in defeat behind Chopneyev last
time out at Sandown however as on that occasion, might be vulnerable to a
horse that has shown improved recent form; |
 |
Xenophon
(9st
13lbs)-Amongst my favourite horses in training. I'd be very hopeful of this
son of Toulon making his mark over the larger obstacles in due course.
There's plenty to like about the ability he's shown thus far over hurdles
and has caught the eye on both occasions he has run this season, most
recently when travelling sweetly throughout before coming with a well-timed
challenge to land the Piers Handicap Hurdle at Leopardstown 59 days ago.
Despite going up in the weights, he still looks well-treated and would have
to be respected if taking up this engagement; |
 |
Levallois (9st
11lbs)- Although his form figures don't suggest it, Levallois posses some
fairly useful lines of form from his racing days in France. Not entirely
sure that he's full acclimatised otherwise I may have been more keen; |
 |
Holy Orders
(9st 10lbs)- I'd be prepared to take this horse seriously if he ever
translated his excellent flat form to obstacles... however he has failed to
do so in three starts this term and is proving expensive to follow...his
salivation might be if the ground was very quick, where he may well be
capable of popping in a place... to many "ifs" realistically
though |
 |
Bernardon (GER) (9st
9lbs)- Seems to have gone backwards since showing some good form over
hurdles during the summer, though would warrant a 2nd glance if a run in the
Tote Gold Trophy was a hint that he might just be on the way back; |
 |
Tactful Remark
(USA)(9st 7lbs) -Useful miler on the flat who has taken well to hurdling
winning two from three starts at Newton Abbot and Worcester. He looked
promising on those occasions and is probably best judged on these efforts
rather than a Lacklustre effort after an enforced absence at Folkestone last
time out. An interesting candidate who would be more so if an eye-catching
jockey was booked for the ride. |
¦"OUR VERDICT" ¦:¬»- The
usual list of suspects come to the fore. The key to the race may be whether Santenay, Copeland, Sacundai and Westender stand their ground. If they do,
Never, Emotional Moment, and Xenophon would make plenty of appeal. Of these,
Xenophon is preferred. If there is a significant weight rise, then Caracciola,
Our Armageddon, Janidou and Canada would certainly enter calculations.
