THE
FLATMAN'S SELECTIONS FOR DAY THREE OF THE DANTE MEETING AT YORK
2.15 Robert Half International Rated Stakes (Class B Showcase Handicap) 20
runners 6f Penalty £16254.49 4yo plus
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Pays d'Amour
"(e/w) Alternative" _Kathology
Honesty Fair looks the most progressive of these and may be in for a good season. Has risen sharply in the weight as a consequence as demonstrated by form lines with Kathology. May struggle to beat that one on this reappearance following that one's fine effort at
Newmarket (has run poorly at Lingfield since). Pays D'Amour is pretty quick and often has good leads established in 7F handicaps. It might just be that this trip could be the answer to return this one to winning ways. Candleriggs goes well fresh.
2.45 Duke Of York Victor Chandler Stakes (Class A) (Group 3) 15runners
6f Penalty £36000.00 3yo plus
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Bertolini
"(e/w) Alternative" _Harmonic Way
I take the Group 1 form to come to the fore here - Bertolini fits that bill. The others are some way behind that level. Misraah might go well as I'm sure sprinting is his game and ran respectably behind Primo Valentino. This is a very fussy horse though who looks a bit of a worrier. I did not rate Munjiz win at Newmarket from a relatively poor field. I fully expect Harmonic Way to come on sufficiently to turn the tables on that one. Pipalong would come right into this if the ground eases (would be the selection) but must be considered an unlikely runner on the prevailing good to firm ground. The others look generally just below the top level which Bertolini represents here.
3.20 Merewood Homes Yorkshire Cup (Class A) (Group 2) 8runners 1m 5f 194yds Penalty
£78300.00 4yo plus
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Dalampour
"(e/w) Alternative"
This looks to rest between Royal Rebel, Dalampour, Marienbard and Churlish Charm. Last year's winner Churlish Charm disappointed me at Newmarket last time (when the selection) on his favoured ground and on that form I cannot see a repeat here. Dalampour received a ride by
Kieran Fallon at Newbury behind Lucido which left plenty to be desired (short of room on several occasions) and when clear finished to great effect although the winner had flown. Dalampour, from our horses to follow list, is well worth another chance over a trip which may prove to be ideal this season. Holds the useful Marienbard on St Leger running over this trip and with the benefit of a run can confirm that form. Royal Rebel is a useful stayer and is reported to have done well through the winter. He represents the chief danger but the extra speed of Dalampour and his three pound penalty can prove decisive. Jardine's Lookout who did my colleague the Rook several favours last year in handicaps appears to have a stiff task on ground likely to prove too lively but he is one to watch with a mind for decent handicap events later on.
3.50 Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Stakes (Class A) (Listed Race) 6runners
1m 2f 85yds Penalty £18444.00 3yo only colts and geldings
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Mersey Sound
"(e/w) Alternative" _
Tricky event with little form to assess. Much will depend on how these horses have progressed through the winter. Valeureux clearly has done well and managed a 100-1 shock win at Nottingham. He has little chance today though. Of the others Londoner does not inspire and he is likely to be made favourite - worth opposing on the balance of his form. Potemkin who has done so well over a mile might just prefer that trip. Mosayter ran well in a back end Newmarket maiden and is well regarded. Similar remarks can be said of the selection and I take his third to Nayef and Tamburlaine as being the outstanding form here which if reproduced can see a winning return from this well regarded individual.
4.20 Irwins Stakes (Handicap) (Class C) 18runners 7f 202yds Penalty £7767.50 3yo only
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Baccura
"(e/w) Alternative" Albashoosh_
Baccura is selected on the strength of his second to Reel Buddy at Newmarket which as I indicated earlier this week looked a particularly strong race to me with the form sure to work out. Lapwing already confirmed this on Tuesday. The selection was staying on in game fashion and looks like a mile might suit. Albashoosh who disappointed at the same meeting should be forgiven and is worth another chance.
4.50 Micklegate Rated Stakes (Class B Handicap) 18runners 1m 2f 85yds Penalty
£9691.80 4yo plus
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Catchy Word
"(e/w) Alternative" Shayadi
Cornelius (who is in our Future Winners section) is smart and did not receive a very good ride last time and can be
forgiven that effort. However, soft ground is very much needed by this one. He is passed over with Catchy Word who put up a pleasing effort under top weight in the Rosebury and has been laid out for this -this looks much weaker. Shayadi who obliged nicely at Pontefract on his debut in this country (put on my horses to follow on that basis) has disappointed twice subsequently. Worth another each way chance to recapture his form here in a weak event.
THE ROOK'S SELECTIONS FOR DAY
THREE OF THE DANTE MEETING AT YORK
Does The Rook agree with The Flatman..........
2.15 Robert Half International Rated Stakes (Class B Showcase Handicap) 20
runners 6f Penalty £16254.49 4yo plus
"THE ROOK " _Halmahera, Honesty Fair, Capricho, Ellens Academy, Deep Space, Pays d'Amour, Lord Pacal, Guinea Hunter, Kathology and Candleriggs are amongst those with live chances in the opener. Despite having not raced for the best part of 290 days Capricho catches the eye. He was always travelling well when winning over 7furlongs on his latest start and gave the impression on more than one occasion that he would develop into a nice four-year-old
"1st * Choice" _Capricho
"(e/w) Alternative" _Tiger Royal
2.45 Duke Of York Victor Chandler Stakes (Class A) (Group 3) 15runners
6f Penalty £36000.00 3yo plus
"THE ROOK " _Bertolini, Pipalong, Astonished, Munjiz, Harmonic Way, Doctor Spin, Misraah, Tedburrow, and Hunting Lion appeal in the second. I can see the appeal of Bertolini, who ran so well in Dubai on his latest start, however he hasn't won for a while, and probably will represent poor value here. Despite carrying a penalty for her Group 1 win at Haydock, Pipalong, back over a more suitable distance makes most appeal (eachway). She is preferred to Astonished, who should be able to be more competitive at this distance, than he has been in his last two starts over five
"1st * Choice" _Pipalong (eachway)
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Astonished,
"LONG*SHOT!!!"_ Hunting Lion
3.20 Merewood Homes Yorkshire Cup (Class A) (Group 2) 8runners 1m 5f 194yds Penalty £78300.00 4yo plus
"THE ROOK " _ Dalampour, who ran a perfectly satisfactory third to Lucido on his seasonal appearance at Newbury will be hard to beat.... as long as he settles early on. I'll stick with him, even though it wouldnt surprise if Marienbad improved a little for the move to the 'boys in blue'. I see him possibly as the chief threat
"1st * Choice" _Dalampour
"(e/w) Alternative" _Astonished,
3.50 Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Stakes (Class A) (Listed Race) 6runners
1m 2f 85yds Penalty £18444.00 3yo only colts and geldings
"THE ROOK " _ Not a race that inspires me. On recent form, Potemkin who was a cosy winner of his last start at Kempton makes most appeal...although I'll be watching the performances of Londoner, (possible Leger horse) and Mersy Sound (future jumper
maybe?) with as much interest
"1st * Choice" _Potemkin,
"(e/w) Alternative" _
4.20 Irwins Stakes (Handicap) (Class C) 18runners 7f 202yds Penalty £7767.50 3yo only
"THE ROOK " _ I must confess that this made little appeal to me. Faithful Warrior, a half-brother to Alanees and Bin Nashwan, caught the eye on pedigree. He ran three solid races against useful opponents last term, and is reasonably treated ..... he'll do for me
"1st * Choice" _Faithful Warrior,
"(e/w) Alternative" _Forever My Lord
4.50 Micklegate Rated Stakes (Class B Handicap) 18runners 1m 2f 85yds Penalty £9691.80 4yo plus
"THE ROOK " _Another trappy handicap ends the meeting; Elmhurst Boy, Bonaguil (USA) , Catchy Word, Tarboush, Swan Knight (USA) Cornelius, Shayadi, and Hudood, all have chances of sorts. I selected Bonaguil (USA) first time out when he was a solid seventh to Elmhurst Boy, at the Whitbread Meeting. He gave me the impression that he would come on for the run, and now back over a more favourable trip can be expected (in my view) to go close here
"1st * Choice" _Bonaguil (USA)
"(e/w) Alternative" _Swan Knight (USA)

THE
FLATMAN'S SELECTIONS FOR DAY TWO OF THE DANTE MEETING AT YORK
2.05 Convergent Systems Avaya Communications Stakes (Handicap) (Class B) 23runners 5f Penalty £19012.50 3yo plus
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Tom Tun
"(e/w) Alternative" _Smart Predator
Gdansk, Tom Tun, Smart Predator, Regal Song and Annette Vallon make most appeal in a tricky opener. Tom Tun is in such great heart that he looks difficult to keep out of the frame here with many not yet in the same form. He has been winning over further than he prefers and this drop back in trip can enable him to show further improvement needed to offset his rise in the weights. Smart Predator chased home Tom Tun at Pontefract under a big weight and could be the one to give him most to do here. Gdansk may require a softer surface to show his best and if any cut in the ground emerges then he would be the selection. Annette
Vallon (selected at Newmarket - was then backed of the boards) clearly has shown something at home and has more scope for improvement than many of these.
2.35 Convergent Networks Middleton Stakes (Class A) (Listed Race) 8runners 1m 2f 85yds Penalty £18270.00 4yo plus fillies
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Valentine Band
"(e/w) Alternative" _
Not a great field here. Cayman Sunset probably surprised Ed Dunlop when winning at Newmarket judged on his comments afterwards. She should beat Moselle and Everlasting Love again. With Ski Run needing further and Broadway Legend needing to settle (unlikely in this small field) and Flossy a softer surface this may not take much winning. The well bred selection has been kept of the track with a minor stress factor but has recovered now. Providing the ground is not to fast I think she can show these a clean pair of heels and reward her trainer's patience.
3.10 Convergent Communications Dante Stakes (Class A) (Group 2) 6runners 1m 2f 85yds Penalty £84100.00 3yo only
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Dilshaan
"(e/w) Alternative" _
A tricky little event. Aldwych is progressive but will need to improve again to trouble the selection who would be some 12lbs clear on current ratings courtesy of his Group 1 winning performance at Doncaster. Tamburlaine has reinforced this form subsequently of course. Both the Dunlop horses form have been rather let down in recent days while Storming Home beat little at Epsom. So, the main
danger to the selection is Celtic Silence who was so impressive at Ascot last term which prompted the Godolphin offer to buy him. He ran well enough in the Dubai trials and
can go well. Dilshaan though should have plenty in hand providing the Stoute team can overcome the rather indifferent form of the stable.
3.40 Pricewaterhousecoopers Hambleton Rated Stakes (Class A) (Showcase Handicap) (Listed Race) 14runners 7f 202yds Penalty £18896.40 4yo plus
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Nimello
"(e/w) Alternative" Soviet Flash
A competitive showcase handicap heat - the outcome will depend largely on how much rain gets into the ground. If, this does happen then I cannot see beyond Nimello who looks like a Group performer to me and is most progressive. He should be able to beat old rival Mastermind again but that one also is much respected. If, the ground remains fast then I would expect Tillerman to come right into the picture as this one has a similar progressive profile to Nimello and will be contesting and winning Group races this season.
Nimello would be seriously disadvantaged. Soviet Flash is also useful (ran El Gran Papa close on one
occasion last season) which would see him go close here - one to watch this year. In a
fascinating contest 3 times Group winner Crimson Tide appears in his first handicap and might surprise and Blue Mountain reappears quickly after chasing home Swallow Flight at Windsor - so not without a chance.
4.10 E.b.f. Convergent Telecom Dealers Maiden Stakes (Class D) 16runners 6f Penalty £7150.00 2yo only
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" Aunty Mary_
"(e/w) Alternative" _
Little to go on from those to have registered form although Ocean Sound will appreciate this step up in trip judged on his effort at Newmarket. He is quite well regarded and will improve for the experience. I suspect that a newcomer will oblige however and the market should be watched closely. This will inevitably centre around Henry Cecil's Western Verse (keeps good company on the gallops) but his presence should enable decent prices to be available about some of the others. Those of interest include Takes Tutu, Aunty Mary and Pieter Brueghel, Eastern Hope,
Addeyll and Beauteous. These represent trainers able to prepare 2 year olds at the first time of asking and the tentative selection is Aunty Mary who is well regarded by the shrewd Easterby team.
4.40 Alcatel Stakes (Handicap) (Class C) 21runners 1m 5f 194yds Penalty £7442.50 4yo plus
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" Weet for Me
"(e/w) Alternative" Accepting
A modest handicap to end the day. Mana D'Argent, Accepting, Weet For Me and Bergamo are the few who make some appeal. With the Johnston team appearing to catch fire the chance of Mana
D'Argent has to be respected after a reasonable effort in the Chester Cup. He is likely to set the pace. If the pace is strong enough then Accepting could turn the tables on the selection as he has always looked as if he needs a trip beyond 16F (including last time behind First Ballot). He is open to plenty of improvement being lightly raced. However, Weet for Me who continues to go the right way is fully effective at this trip and his consistency reassures me more than anything else to make him the choice here.
THE ROOK'S SELECTIONS FOR DAY
TWO OF THE DANTE MEETING AT YORK
Does The Rook agree with The Flatman..........
2.05 Convergent Systems Avaya Communications Stakes (Handicap) (Class B) 23runners 5f Penalty £19012.50 3yo plus
"THE ROOK " _Annette Vallon, Bishops Court, Galloway Boy, Tom Tun, Whistler, Dancing Mystery, Juwwi, Argent Facile, Brecongill Lad, Francport, Gdansk, Pips Magic, Smart Predator, Get Stuck In, Sunley Sense, and Henry Hall, all have claims in an open affair. I have to side with Bishops Court, who ran a promising race on his seasonal reappearance at Nottingham, when he was effectively beaten by the draw behind Ellens Lad at Nottingham in April.... Not the easiest horse to win on, but if he gets the run of this then he's bound to go close in my view
"1st * Choice" _Bishops Court,
"(e/w) Alternative" _Dancing Mystery,
2.35 Convergent Networks Middleton Stakes (Class A) (Listed Race) 8runners 1m 2f 85yds Penalty £18270.00 4yo plus fillies
"THE ROOK " _A trappy race is best left to Cayman Sunset, who beat Moselle, and Flossy on her seasonal reappearance at Newmarket. The likely false pace should play into the selections hand `(she isn't certain to stay this trip)
"1st * Choice" _Cayman Sunset,
"(e/w) Alternative" _Ski Run
3.10 Convergent Communications Dante Stakes (Class A) (Group 2) 6runners 1m 2f 85yds Penalty £84100.00 3yo only
"THE ROOK " _It never ceases to amaze me why trainer don't ensure pace in races like this !!!. Six Derby hopefuls make their bid for glory, yet the end result is almost certainly likely to be inconclusive. Thats the way to treat this is my view, unless one of them bites the bullet. If one of them takes the plunge then Dilshaan may fulfill the promise he showed last term .... He will be staying on at the death.....As that is unlikely then I just prefer Olden Times, who may be able to poach this prize I wouldnt be surprised to see a tactical move from Eddery early in the straight
"1st * Choice" _Olden Times
"(e/w) Alternative" _
3.40 Pricewaterhousecoopers Hambleton Rated Stakes (Class A) (Showcase Handicap) (Listed Race) 14runners 7f 202yds Penalty £18896.40 4yo plus
"THE ROOK " _: Nimello is in good heart and will be hard to beat if there's rain, but his draw doesn't make life easy and Tillerman may be up to this despite this being his first race of the season. Mastermind, a clever winner at Newbury last time out looks the main danger
"1st * Choice" _Tillerman
"(e/w) Alternative" _Vintage Premium,
4.10 E.b.f. Convergent Telecom Dealers Maiden Stakes (Class D) 16runners 6f Penalty £7150.00 2yo only
"THE ROOK " _Plenty of nice newcomers here Western Verse, Pieter Brueghel, Ocean Sound, Addeyll, and Takes Tutu (USA) catch the eye. It will be interesting to see if punters come for Western Verse Henry Cecil's charge. There is little to recommend on this season's evidence at the moment and therefore Pieter Brueghel, is a tentative selection
"1st * Choice" _ Pieter Brueghel,
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Addeyll,
4.40 Alcatel Stakes (Handicap) (Class C) 21runners 1m 5f 194yds Penalty £7442.50 4yo plus

DANTE MEETING AT YORK
Tuesday 15 May 2001
THE FLATMAN'S SELECTIONS FOR DAY ONE OF THE DANTE MEETING AT YORK
2.05 Yorkshire Life Magazine Stakes (Handicap) (Class C) L15000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 3f 195yds, penalty L11310.00, 20 runners.
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" Maniatis_
"(e/w) Alternative" _
Batswing, Maniatis, Roman King, Nowell House, Spring Pursuit, and KidZ Play are the leading contenders. I would be quite keen on Batswing but unless the ground slows down a bit I suspect this won't be his day. Nowell House and Spring Pursuit's form are closely linked and there might no be much between them here - I suspect Nowell House may come out on top. Both these horses beat Maniatis at Newmarket first time out but there was good reason for that in that the Cole horses got involved in a battle for the lead and ran himself into the ground. He is also a gross horse who would have needed the race more than most. I expect a vastly improved display today from a horse who was going the right way last year - he has more potential than most of these.
2.35 Williamhillcasino.com Stakes (Showcase Handicap) (Class B) L35000 added, 3yo only, 6f 214yds, penalty L22750.00, 20 runners.
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Smirk (Recommended)
"(e/w) Alternative" Irish Stream_
Plenty with chances of sorts and difficult to reject many here. But Smirk won in such pleasing style at Newmarket that he looks to be on the right side of the handicapper at the moment. David Elsworth was planning a raid on the French Guineas with this one and if that judgement is correct he is a steal here. Dangers abound. Lapwing ran well at the Guineas meeting behind Reel Buddy (looked like a good race to me) and I suspect the form will work out. Proceed with Care, Injaaz, Goggles are just three more with chances that I respect but all have to concede weight to Smirk and that looks hard to me. On that basis, I select Irish Stream (trainer feels he is a good handicapper in the making) to go very well of just 8-0. He will appreciate the better ground than he encountered at Newmarket.
3.10 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Class A) (Group 3) L50000 added, 3yo only fillies, 1m 2f 85yds, penalty L29000.00, 11 runners.
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Relish the Thought
"(e/w) Alternative" _
Looks between Relish the Thought, Flight of Fancy, Saudia and Time Away. Flight of Fancy has tremendous potential and if she is to justify the support for the Oaks which has already come her way then she should win here. I suspect if she is to be opposed then today is the day to do it. Relish the Thought (one of our horses to follow) has the form in the book, which is some way in advance of the Stoute horse thanks to her brilliant performance at Newbury in heavy ground last backend. Everything was against her that day but she won in super fashion. She should improve further over this trip and could be anything. Saudia is well regarded and might show more this time than at Newbury on her reappearance. Time Away (another horse to follow) ran well at Newmarket last time and was not particularly suited by the slow pace. This beautifully bred filly might need a further step up in trip to really show her true colours though. Take the exciting Relish the Thought to become a leading Oaks candidate by showing this lot a clean pair of heels.
3.40 Newton Investment Management Rated Stakes (Class B Handicap) L25000 added, 3yo only, 1m 2f 85yds, penalty L15399.00, 11 runners.
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Zulfaa
"(e/w) Alternative" Sixty Seconds
Sixty Seconds, Canada, Zulfaa, Polish Off and Lady Bear are the principals here. Sixty Seconds and Canada ran behind the John Dunlop trained Rosi's Boy on their reappearance. With the Gosden team mostly needing the run, I suspect he can come out on top again. John Dunlop though has a clear line to this form and Zulfaa can be expected to make the most of the weight concession here if Mr Dunlop has got his sums right. He usually does. This looks a bit of a stiff test for Warwick winner Balladeer and Polish Off does not look particularly well treated on the evidence so far. Expect Lady Bear to come late and fast but this looks tough enough. Saratov though useful has his share of weight.
4.10 Simon Storage Conditions Stakes (Class B) L15000 added, 3yo only, 1m 5f 194yds, penalty L9178.49, 6 runners.
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _Aquarius
"(e/w) Alternative"
Tamiani Trail was spoken of as a St Leger candidate after his Doncaster success in March. Storming Home exposed his lack of pace at Epsom so the step up in trip could bring out some improvement. Aquarius and Mark Johnson's And Beyond were separated by a length at Newmarket over 12F and I doubt there will be much between them again - the step up in trip should suit them too particularly the former. Archduke Ferdinand has not shown enough this season to warrant support. The remainder look up against it. It is often wise to forgive a horse a modest run at Epsom and Tamiani Trail must have a respectable chance to get back to winning ways here. However, the trip should suit Aquarius and I suspect we will see a big step up in performance now that a stiffer trip is encountered.
4.40 European Breeders Fund Novice Fillies' Stakes (Class D) L10000 added, 2yo only fillies, 6f, penalty L6922.50, 7 runners.
"THE FLATMAN " _
"1st * Choice" _ Ristra
"(e/w) Alternative" _
Those, which have racecourse experience, do not over excite. Madame Boulangere ran well enough at Salisbury and shaped as if a step up in trip may suit and is clearly the best of those. It would come as no surprise if this fell to a newcomer and Ristra who is to the fore in the forecast market would not have to be anything special to oblige here. Chantilly Myth from a stable that does well here is another to consider - watch the market.
