THE First National Gold Cup Steeple Ch.

Analysis & Selections by

  .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

ASCOT
Saturday 23rd November
(¯¯ Iª¯ ASCOT¯¯¯)¯¯¯ »- 1:10 Sodexho H 'cap Hurdle £10000 added, 4yo plus, 3m, penalty £6734, 8 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- A fascinating handicap hurdle opens Ascots cards, and with the ground having been opened up yesterday, conditions are sure to be dire. Young American, Empire Park, Prokofiev, Facts Not Fiction, Hawkes Run, and What A Wonder make most appeal of the eight runners who line up here, however I know EMPIRE PARK revels in these conditions and was given a peach of a ride by Polly Gundry to win over 2m 6f at Newton Abbot last time out. This combination has really clicked and could prove to be too strong for Young American and What A Wonder.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- EMPIRE PARK
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Young American
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- What A Wonder.

(¯¯ IIª¯ ASCOT¯¯¯)¯¯¯ »- 1:40 Coral.co.uk H 'cap Steeple Ch. £16000 added, 5yo plus, 3m 110yds, penalty £10946, 8 runners.

¦ [ONE TO JUMP 2003] _ are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>-Historg and Iris Bleu.
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Iris Bleu, Infrasonique, Ifni du Luc, Historg, Storm Damage, and Desailly, appeal in the second. INFRASONIQUE is fairly certain to attempt to try and make all here, as he did here over course and distance last time out. He jumped boldly and was unlucky to come up against You're Agoodun on one of his going days. He could set this lot a really stiff task here and IRIS BLEU, [wasn't it nice to see him win at Cheltenham], STORM DAMAGE, [well beaten by Mazileo at Sandown on his reappearance, but is sure to have come on for the run], DESAILLY, [a winner at Exeter on his latest appearance] and HISTORG [sure to have come on for his third to Direct Access at Kelso on his reappearance] will need to be on their guard to not repeat yesterday's debacle. You wouldnt know how much more improvement Iris Bleu might have and he is feared, however 11-10 is off-putting and Historg is taken to plod past the post first.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Historg
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Iris Bleu
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Infrasonique

(¯¯ IIIª¯ ASCOT¯¯¯)¯¯¯ »- 2:10 First National Gold Cup Steeple Ch. (Limited Intermediate H 'cap) [gr. 2] £50000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 3f 110yds, penalty £29000, 6 runners.

¦ [ONE TO JUMP 2003] _ are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>-Golden Goal (GER)
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- TRUCKERS TAVERN, [one of the better novices of last term at this trip, who hasn't been out since finishing 18 lengths behind Big-And-Bold at Fairyhouse in April], ROYAL AUCLAIR, [who made all to land the Cathcart at the Cheltenham Festival], THYNE WILL TELL, [who steps up in trip when landing a handicap at Stratford in October], FONDMORT, [A decent 2 mile novice last term, who is better than his 20lengths third to Armaturk at Aintree suggests]. GOLDEN GOAL, [fourth to Royal Auclair at Cheltenham, but was previously a Grade 1 winning chaser] and JURALAN, [pulled up in the Cathcart at Cheltenham, but had previously won two steeplechase in the manner of a horse open to further improvement.] make up the first for this limited handicap steeplechase. The soft ground gives this more of a 3mile event and at these weights Trucker Tavern makes plenty of appeal. He is crying out for a step up in trip and despite the stable's runners generally needing a run he is probably well enough treated to get away with it here. Royal Auclair and Golden Goal look to be the main dangers
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Truckers Tavern,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Royal Auclair,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Golden Goal,

(¯¯ IVª¯ ASCOT¯¯¯)¯¯¯ »- 2:45 John Doyle Aurelius Juvenile Novices' Hurdle £9000 added, 3yo only, 2m 110yds, penalty £6279, 6 runners.

¦ [ONE TO JUMP 2003] _ are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>-Fils A Papa (FR) and Briar (CZE)
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Nas Na Riogh, Briar, Lord Ville, and Fils A Papa, make most appeal in race four. NAS NA RIOGH will be favourite here on the back of her win at Sandown , where she made most of the running and stayed on well when challenged to beat the second Mistanoora by 2lengths. I'm sure she'll adopt similar tactics here and will try to stretch these, however BRIAR, [a winner earlier in the weak at Folkestone], LORD VILLE , [a lightly raced French import, who won his latest start, at Le Mans in May] and FILS A PAPA, [a maiden who goes on the ground and has been well schooled] provide her with stiff opposition. I like our horses to follow here and Briar's experience is preferred to Fils A Papa's potential
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Briar (CZE)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Fils A Papa,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Nas Na Riogh,

(¯¯ Vª¯ ASCOT¯¯¯)¯¯¯ »- 3:15 Archmold Novices' Steeple Ch. £11000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 3f 110yds, penalty £7536.75, 4 runners.

¦ [ONE TO JUMP 2003] _ are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>- Montreal (FR)
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Only four runners line up for race five, however Montreal, Got One Too, Farmer Jack, and One Nation all can be considered here. I adore MONTREAL and despite conceding 5lbs here, he impressed when winning a similar event at Exeter eighteen days ago. The second Shareef has since franked the form and Montreal is taken to land his second race of the season.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Montreal (FR)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Got One Too (FR)
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Farmer Jack

(¯¯ VIª¯ ASCOT¯¯¯)¯¯¯ »- 3:45 Sodexho Novices' Hurdle £10000 added, 4yo plus, 2m 110yds, penalty £6938.75, 11 runners.

¦ [ONE TO JUMP 2003] _ are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>- Wellington Hall [GER}, Caracciola [GER] and Narwhal,
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Jaboune, Kalca Mome, Dumaran, Kadiskar, Wellington Hall, Caracciola and Narwhal, are best of those lining up in the finale. JABOUNE is certain to go as favourite having run so well at the Open Meeting last weekend behind Mutakarrim. His 10lbs penalty for wins earlier in the season are off-putting and Our one to jump horses Wellington Hall, Caracciola and Narwhal, make plenty of appeal here. These will all win races during the season, however WELLINGTON HALL was in the process of running a good race behind Pepe Galvez at Taunton on his hurdles bow, when falling at the last. If he operates on this ground he should go close here.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Wellington Hall,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Caracciola [e/w]
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Jaboune

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within 1/2Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
Surbiton obliged at 16/1.

KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30

THE DERBY 2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
