Analysis & Selections by

  "the rook"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

Either over jumps or on the flat, The "Furlong To Go Triumvirate" of The Rook, The Flatman, and Christopher Iles attempt to point out horses, who it may pay to follow during the season.

¦BURLU (FR)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Martin Pipe
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-
Burlu wouldnt normally attract much attention, however as this nine year old son of Garde Royale is entered not only at Cheltenham but in the Martell Grand National, he is worth a mention. His form is hard to evaluate, however he didn't win six steeplechases in France - mainly in claimers, however he was useful in that grade and on the occasions he was tried outside of that grade ran well.. He hasn't raced since finishing out of the frame [under Thierry Doumen] in the '02 running of the Prix Lutteur II Steeple ch' at Auteuil in March (a decent handicap Steeple ch'), where he was prominent for a lot of the race... He stays 3miles and might want a trip and it'll be fascinating to see what sort of campaign he's given
¦CHELSEA BRIDGE¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Henrietta Knight
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I was certainly attracted to Chelsea Bridge, a five year old gelding by Over The River out of Anguillita; who ran on the level without winning for Patrick Prendergast in Ireland. His pedigree is an interesting mix of speed and stamina and I think he is definitely worth watching out for during the remainder of the season.
¦EVERREADY¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Philip Hobbs
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Phillip Hobbs has some attractive new horses to go in bumpers and one of them might be Everready, a five year old gelding by Afzal by Sister Shot - a full sister to Champion Hurdler Celtic Shot, who herself was fairly useful over obstacles .. he clearly looks will be better when put over obstacles and is definitely worth watching during the remainder of the season.
¦GALION (RUS) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Jacques Ortet in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I like to think that Furlong to go has kept punters informed of possible new trends; like sourcing horses from Argentina and Poland... Well I note that trainer Jacques Ortet has been searching Europe for new stock and amongst his string is Galion, a four year old by Observation Post, who was placed in three of his five starts in Switzerland and the Czech Republic...the value of the form is difficult to gauge, however he clearly must scope and I'll be interested to see how he fares this season.
¦GATEJUMPER ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Robert H Alner
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Gatejumper is another debutante that I'm looking forward to seeing... This five year old son of Zaffaran [out of a Shackleton mare] does certainly caught the eye... He should be a nice prospect for next term.. let's hope he confirms that in bumpers this season.
¦HIP HOP (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Guillame Macaire in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Guiilame Macaire is due to introduce Hip Hop; [a four year old by Mansonnien] to the racecourse and as he just missed being added into our "One To Jump" feature as a bumper.. I will certainly be monitoring his progress with next season in mind.
¦IMAGE DE MARQUE II (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Martin Pipe
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Image de Marque II deserves a mention after running a lot better than her finishing position suggested at Wincanton on 15.02.03.. She travelled quite sweetly until three out until topweight eventually began to tell.. She saw only 23lengths behind the winner See You Sometime and as this was her first attempt at 2m6f,  she may be open to a bit more improvement at or around it.. She may be very interesting back over fences off what would be a very lenient mark.
¦KEN'TUCKY (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Nicky Henderson
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Ken'tucky caught the eye on his debut at Kempton on 27.01.03 behind the winner Hawk's Landing staying on nicely over a course that seemed [to me] to be too sharp for him. He is related to several winners and on this evidence wont be too be too long in joining them.
¦LEHETOSEG (HUN)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Henri Despont in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Whilst Galion flies the flag for the Russian Federation, Lehetoseg will be attempting to do the same for Hungary... He hasn't raced for a year, but this five year old has won his last three hurdles at Budapest - most recently in October '01... quite what the form amounts to time will tell, however he does appeal and will hope to see how he comes back from injury.
¦LE PERO (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Guillame Macaire in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I'm really taken by this four year old entire by Perrault who despite looking really unfurnished stayed on in pleasing fashion to finish 4lengths behind eventual winner Patricksnineenth in Sandown's bumper on 14.02.03... I will be watching what he does in France before the end of the season and it wouldnt surprise me if he didn't develop into a nice hurdler nest season.
¦LUPIN (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Francois Doumen in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Francois Doumen is due to introduce Lupin shortly to the racecourse... He is a four year old by Luchiroverte; out of Amarante Ii (a daughter of Brezzo) who won a Non-thoroughbred flat race in the French Provinces. I will be monitoring his progress with next season in mind.
¦NEGRESKO (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Martin Pipe
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I'll be interested to see how Negresko fares, now that Martin Pipe has got hold of this four year old by Great Palms... Surprised that former trainer Jehan De Balanda has let him go as this progressive four year old had won five of his last six starts over hurdles races at Divonne [twice], Lyon-Parilly, Marseille Borelly and Lyon-Villerube... He didn't run too badly on his latest start, back at Lyon-Parilly over fences where he was third and I suspect that it's the promise over fences which has bought about this sale [or move] to Nicholashayne.
¦MANOVER (HUN)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Henri Despont in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Henri Despont has another Hungarian in his stable in the shape of Manover; a four year old by Koenigsloewe, who only raced once on the flat at Budapest, without showing much ability... let's see how he fares in France.
¦MEDICI (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Jonjo O'Neill
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Medici made an eye-catching debut at Ascot on 18.01.03 finishing fourth to Cloudy Grey [btn 17lengths]. He was held up at the start, however he travelled sweetly throughout and closed on the principals off the final bend, only to weaken from two furlongs out. That was a pleasing effort and this four year old son of Cadoudal should be good enough to win a similar event before going over obstacles next season.
¦OXALO (GER)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-M Beltran in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-
Oxalo, a seven year old by Acatenango makes a return to the racecourse after a long absence... Formerly trained by Jehan Bertran De Balanda, Oxalo has shown some useful form during the 1999/2000 season, winning his first two starts at Enghien before finishing in the frame on five other occasions at Auteuil... He hasn't raced since chasing home Ty Benjam in the 2000 of the Prix Melanos (Hurdle) in September 2000, however a measure of that form is that he had Bounce Back, Batman Senora ans Sardoum all behind him.. He clearly had ability.. it will interesting to see if he can make an impact on his return to the track.
¦PLANTAGANET (FR)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Ian Williams
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I am a big fan of the sire Cadoudal, which probably explains why I've added this five year old to this feature. He is by Ever Young, [a daughter of Royal Charter], who won over cross country fences at Pau, so clearly this horse will be seen to best advantage once he goes over obstacles.. I'd hope he can confirm there is potential in bumpers in the interim.
¦SAINT REALISE (FR)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-M Rolland in France
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Saint Realise made an encouraging return to the racecourse when finishing fourth in a hurdle race at Auteuil in December... This six year old son of Saint Preuil was one of the best 4-Y-O chaser in France two years ago; winning the 2001 runnings of the Prix Fleuret (Steeple ch') [gr. 3] and the Prix Jean Stern (Steeple ch') [gr. 2] before starting favourite for the Prix Inspace - Prix Ferdinand Dufaure Steeple ch' [gr. 1]. He was travelling nicely in this when meeting serious interference which knocked him completely out of the race, he eventually finished 5th...The chasing scene in France is relatively quiet so if he retains his ability Saint Realise may well still be able to make an impact over the larger obstacles.
¦SPINAROUND ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Nick A Gaselee
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Although he was well beaten by Patricksnineenth in Sandown's bumper on 14.02.03; I liked this this five year old gelding by Terimon and no doubt Nick Gaselee will take his time with him and you may not see the best of this until this time next term...[probably in handicap novice hurdles].. he should be much better over fences in time.
¦VIDI CAESAR (NZ) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Norman B Mason
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- I am aware that Norman had been busy buying horses from New Zealand [mainly because I was searching for details on Victor Argosy - a decent chaser who has joined Martin Pipe]... including Vidi Caesar. This eight year old by Racing Is Fun has been placed [in what were to all in tense and purposes] bumpers in New Zealand... it'll be interesting to see how he takes to obstacles... you wouldnt be surprised if this shrewd outfit got a success out of him.

future winners #005 - Cheltenham entries
Friday, January 17, 2003

We did a similar feature last term where she highlighted some of the more interesting cheltenham entries.. even if none of them go on to oblige at the Festival, we're quite hopeful that they will make their presence felt over obstacles in the coming months.

¦ARABIE ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Venetia Williams
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Former usual handicapper Arabie was bought at the Tattersalls Newmarket sales to go jumping by present connections, having won twice on the level when trained by Henry Cecil... He seemed to be an unlucky horse always seemingly finding a couple too good for him, but he is talented and national hunt racing may bring the best out in him.
¦ALVINO ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Henrietta Knight
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Alvino was a progressive bumper last term winning twice at Ascot and Ludlow before finishing ninth behind Pizarro in the Cheltenham bumper... he'll win races even if he isn't good enough to win at the Festival.
¦BOSHAM MILL ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Ian Williams
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Bosham Mill is useful [if slightly temperamental] five-year-old by Nashwan, out of that good filly Mill On The Floss... He has decent form in listed company. however his temperament could get the better on him and whilst he is very talented, i worried be entirely convinced that national hunt racing will bring out the best in him.
¦COALITION ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Nicky Henderson
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Coalition is a four year old by Polish Precedent , out of a welsh Pageant mare who is a half brother to several winners, who was placed by Sir Mark Prescott to win four times last term at Lingfield, Beverley, Newcastle and most recently Sandown in September... he improved as he stepped up in trip and could develop into a nice middle distance hurdler in time.. though connections may be rushing things if they try to qualify him for the Festival.
¦EXTREMIST (USA) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Kim Bailey
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Extremist is certainly nicely bred , being related to smart juveniles Recondite and Best of the Bests.. This four year old gelding by Dynaformer only won twice for Richard Hannon, at Brighton in August '02 and next time out at Brighton two weeks later... He didn't live up to expectations however would be a better than average recruit for hurdling and is likely to be placed to win by present connections
¦IBERUS (GER) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Martin Pipe
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-You have to wonder what sort of things Iberus has been doing at home for connections to have entered him for the Champion Hurdle, despite never jumping an obstacle in public. This five-year-old son of Monsun is the winner of four of his sixteen starts and has won/run well in Listed/Group company, his most recent win being in the Muller Brot-Riemer Meile (Listed) at Munich in June '02... He stays 1m~4f and could be interesting if he can translates that ability over obstacles
¦KING SOLOMON (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Venetia Williams
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Former usual juvenile King Solomon tries his luck over hurdles. This four year old son of Simon Du Desert is bred in the pink as his dam All Square was a triple 7-8f 2yo winner in France. He looked promising when landing two listed events at two at Saint Cloud and Maison Laffite, but failed to build on those efforts before being snapped up at the Tattersalls Horse-in-Training Sales... If Venetia Williams can get him to translate his ability over obstacles he could win races... a little bit of an "if" though.
¦LIMERICK BOY (GER) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Venetia Williams
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Limerick Boy is another German import who has been given a Cheltenham entry... This five-year-old son of Alwuhush has won three of his fourteen starts [he was placed on three other occasion] including winning the Preis der Deutschen Einheit (Group 3) and Preis des Gestuts Wiesenhof-Dr Busch Memorial (Group 3) as a three year old... He didn't win last term however he clearly still retained some of his ability and is certainly interesting.
¦LIRFOX (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Martin Pipe
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Lirfox wont be familiar to many British punters however this six year old mare by the sire Foxhound has been a revelation over obstacles winning both of her starts over hurdles at Pau this winter including beating Japhet in a conditions event last month [admittedly she was in receipt of weight].... She was a fair handicapper on the level in France and could make an impact if she translate that ability to obstacles over here.
¦LOUISVILLE ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Noel Meade
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Louisville is a four year old by Grand Lodge, whose claim to fame is that he was ninth in this year's Derby behind High Chapparal [btn 58lengths]... He was highly thought off so it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that he could win over obstacles this winter.
¦MAN O'MYSTERY (USA) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Paul Webber
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Paul Webber certainly has his hands full trying to squeeze enthusiasm out of this talented but frustrating awkward customer.. When he consents to put his best foot forward on the flat he looks really decent, however his string of places accurately reflect how reluctant, [on occasions]  he has been when in with a winning opportunities... that said he'd win many a hurdle race if he consented and I hope that if he gets a winning opportunity that his mind is "made up" for him rather than being kidded, which may well be the best way to ride him.
¦NAUTICAL ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Martin Pipe
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I noted a couple of British trainers had been sourcing some of their prospective jumpers from Dubai this winter.. the most recent of these is Nautical; a five-year-old by Lion Cavern who was purchased from Dubai by present connections having won his latest start over 1m~2f at Nad El Sheba in April '02... Dubai "cast-offs" don't have the greatest record over obstacles so far, however you'd think its probably only a matter of time until one of these nicely bred thoroughbreds finally makes an impact over obstacles.
¦TRESOR PREZINIERE (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Philip Hobbs
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Tresor Preziniere is a five year old by Grand Tresor who has done well on the French provincial circuit... winning twice over fences before Christmas at Joselli and Angers.. doesn't seem good enough to go to Cheltenham, however I suspect he could have been bought to go hurdling next term.... worth a second look if he races this term.
¦WELL CHIEF (GER) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Martin Pipe
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Well is a four year old gelding by Night Shift out of Wellesiena (a daughter of Scenic), who has won two of his seven starts on the level when trained by R Suerland in Germany.. He was campaigned in Group company, so clearly is talented.. and could be good enough to win races for present connection.
¦ZORN (GER) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Ian Williams
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Zorn is a four year old gelding by Lavrico, out of a daughter of Acatenango, who has joined present connections having won two of his five starts on the level, when trained by Peter Schiergen in Germany, including the Hoffnungs-Preis des Kölner Renn-Vereins (Listed) at Gelsenkirchen in April '02... He has been pleasing connections who talk of him as a nice long-term chasing prospect.. he certainly has the potential to do well over hurdles.

future winners #004

¦BONUS FOR POLONIA (POL)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-A. Baseggio in Italy
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- I like to keep an interest in what is happening on the continent and I noted that there is an ever increasing influence of Polish bred horses racing over jumps in Italy, a new recruit is Bonus for Polonia; who is a five-year-old son of Barathea, who has shown ability of the level when trained by Krzysztof Ziemianski in Poland. He has the scope to jump a fence, so it'll be interesting to see how he fears.

¦EM'S ROYALTY¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-A. Parker
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Em's Royalty is a six year old gelding by Royal Fountain - a sire that tends to produce larger thoroughbreds. He is almost certainly an embryonic chaser in the making and i will be monitoring his progression with "One to Jump" 2003/4 in mind.

¦GOLIGHTLY (GER)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-John Joseph Murphy
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Golightly is a five year old mare by Goofalik, who is with John Joseph Murphy having won twice from eighteen starts in Germany (she was placed on five other occasions)... I'm not expecting much, but it would be nice if she proved capable of showing promise at the lesser tracks.

¦GUNSON HIGHT¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- M Todhunter
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Gunson Hight was one of two horses that caught the eye at Musselburgh on 28-Dec-2002. This attractive six year old son of Be My Chief was ultimately beaten 43lengths by the winner Loopy Linda, however he travelled kindly until the home turn and will have come on a bundle for the experience... Definitely a horse that will leave that form behind over hurdles... hopefully this term (more probably next term).

¦HIGHPOINT (GER)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Mrs L Wadham
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Highpoint is an interesting recruit to hurdling, having won three of her ten starts as well as finishing in the frame on four other occasions... She's no world beater however she hails from a shred outfit who will place her in an appropriate grade... it'll be no surprise if she finds a winning opportunity this term

¦JEU DE BROOK (FR)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Francois Cottin
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Francois Cottin has been busy purchasing horses in france and amongst his purchases is this six year old son of Trebrook, who was formerly trained by Jean-Paul Senechal. He's shown promise over fences, most recently a Non-Thoroughbred's Steeple-ch at Auteuil in October when he was only beaten 11/2lengths by the winner Jau Lee. Once he acclimatise, he may well be capable of getting into the winners enclosure.

¦LOI DE MARTIALE ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- J M Jefferson
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Loi de Martiale was another horse that caught the eye in the bumper at Musselburgh on 28-Dec-2002. This four year old by present took the eye before the off and even more so in running, despite running very green. He was off the bridle very early on, but stayed on from along way behind up the straight to finish only 4lnegths behind Loopy Linda... He should win a similar event before hopefully going onto better things once put over obstacles.

¦LOUGHANELTEEN¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-P J Rothwell
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Loughanelteen made a promising debut under rules at Thurles on 18-Dec-2002. This five year old entire by Satco, was given a confident ride sitting out at the rear of the field... He made his move turning for home on the outside and, but drifted badly to the left in the final furlong, just failing to catch the eventual winner Euro Dilemma. He probably should have won and should go close before the end of the season.

¦RODDY THE VET¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Albert Ennis
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Albert Ennis has endured a miserably run of near misses until Eltigri won over Christmas at Kempton.. Hopefully Roddy The Vet will continue that winning form. He has shown plenty of promise in both of his starts so far, finishing eight of 24 behind Doors To Manual at Cork in March, before winning at Gowran Park in good style in October, making steady progress from halfway and staying on well after hitting the front early in the straight.. A distance of ground should suit and hopefully he can find some winning opportunities before the end of the season.

¦SAMURAJ (POL)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- (Andrzej Walicki in Poland)
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Formerly trained in Poland by Andrzej Walicki Samuraj is a four year old gelding by Purist, who won twice on the flat at two and took part in some of th better juvenile events. He has shown promise in a couple of races in Italy and may be one of those horses who shows improvement as he matures

¦SCHUH SHINE ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Lenny Lungo
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Schuh Shine is a six year old by Roselier out of Naar Chamali, who showed nothing when tried over hurdles. He hails from a yard who does well with its bumpers, so whilst I dont expect him to be near the head of the group, may show enough to be a candidate for "One to Jump" next term.

¦THE BOYS IN GREEN ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Christy Roche
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-The Boys In Green is definitely a bumper horse to look out for during the remainder of the season...that is of course if this half-brother by Shernazar to Joe Mac and Direct Route has inherited some of that ability. Its probably worth noting where this horse is entered up during the remainder of the season.

¦THEY CALL ME MOLLY (CAN)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Francis Flood
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-They Call Me Molly caught the eye on her latest start at Navan on 21-Dec-2002. This four year old by Charlie Barley made an encouraging debut at Punchestown two weeks ago where she finished seventh, and better that here, showing up prominently until Adarma and Barrow Bridge proved too strong on the climb to the finish... On this evidence , you'd think she'd go close in a similar event before the end of the season.

¦UNMISTAKABLY ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Ted Walsh
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Unmistakably, a six year old gelding by Roselier is by the dam Decent Debbie, which makes him a full-brother to that useful hurdler/novice Chase Berude Not To. He is the first horse that Robert Ogden has sent to Ted Walsh and no doubt all connections will be expecting/hoping that he is as good as his brother.

¦VALLEYA (FR)¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Jim T R Dreaper
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Valleya is another offspring by Linamix , who is being sent over obstacles. This five year old mare has fair form in handicap company on the provincial circuit when trained by Guy Henrot in France, and will no doubt be brought along gradually by this astute trainer.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices' Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.
Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with "A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27 days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he'd have been an excellent eachway wager}.

"As much as I like Demasta, there is so much pace here, that I cant help but think that the front runners may go too fast for their own good here. It makes sense [in my view], to be looking for something likely to be able to travel well... and despite my very negative comments above... I have (since the runners were declared), had a lot of time for the chance of Chicuelo (at eachway odds). I think some horses suit certain trainers, and I think this horse has a better chance of winning a race like this with Martin Pipe than Ian Williams - not because I necessarily think Pipe is a far better trainer than Williams is... its more to do with understanding this type of horse. Nicholashayne - more than most training establishments - does particularly with their foreign purchases. I think this is in part because due to the amount of time/effort they have invested into studying not only french form, but also how certain trainers educate their young horses - adopting if/when necessary previous regime/style of training. Secondly, (more importantly), some french breds improve after a season's acclimatization. A look at this horse's form in France and you'll find, for example, his good third to Sleeping Night and Ilnamar (beaten 8½lengths) in the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Grade 3) , or his third to Sleeping Night and Douze Douze in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase Des 4 Ans (Chase) (Grade 1) in November 2000. He has certainly been given a chance here off of only a handicap rating of 116, and I can't see him not finishing in the first four.... He'll do for me".
