Analysis & Selections by

  .t.h.e. r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

Either over jumps or on the flat, The "Furlong To Go Triumvirate" of The Rook, The Flatman, and Christopher Iles attempt to point out horses, who it may pay to follow during the season.

AITOR (FR):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Jacques Ortet
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Jacques Ortet has a big strong of juveniles to campaign in 2003, amongst them is this unraced son of Take Risk by a daughter of Zino... I'll be hoping that he shows some promises during the first half of 2003.

ALPHA NOBLE (GER):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Venetia Williams
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Alpha Noble is a five year old son of Lando who won three of his fourteen starts in Germany before joining current connections, and was placed in seven others (he also was campaigned in Group company. He was well supported to win on his debut at Uttoxeter but disapointed (partially) on staying on at the one pace, eventually finishing 20lengths behind the winner Mythical King. Clearly more was expected of his and connections will no doubt expect improvement next time out... starting from humble beginning and working up the ladder may suit him this term.

BLUE ENDEAVOUR (FR) :¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Paul F Nicholls;
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Blue Endeavour is an unraced son of Endeavour, who is related to several winners in France. He is one to work out for in bumpers in the spring

CRYSTAL D'AINAY (FR):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Guillame Macaire
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Crystal D'Ainay is a three year old son of Saint Preuil who has already won twice over obstacles - over fences at Angers and Hurdles at Bordeaux Le Boscat. He was back over hurdles at Pau on 21.12.02 and acquitted himself really well and lost nothing in defeat behind the eventual winner Spring Lover.. It'll be no surprise to see this horse at the premier courses in the spring of 2003.

DUC DE LA BRUNIE (FR) :¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Jacques Ortet
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Here's another prospect to watch out over the next couple of Months... Jacques Ortet 's four year old son of Iris Noir won four of his six starts in 2002 at Pau over hurdles, as well over fences at Mont-De-Marsan, Toulouse and at Pau, where he jumped well before putting 10lengths between him and his rivals. He is another who should he continue on this upward trend to see at the premier courses in the spring of 2003

JESPER (FR):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Richard Phillips
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Jesper, a five year old AQPS-bred, has joined current connections, having finished in the frame in six bumpers, most recently when finishing 2lengths behind Malory Du Cheney at Vittel in August. He's a nice prospect who should hopefully show some promise in middle distance novice hurdles.

KAOUTCHOU (FR):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Arthur L T Moore
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Kaoutchou is a lightly raced son of Video Rock who has only had the one run, where he finished well down the field behind Liberman in a Punchestown bumper in April. I don't expect the to be that good this term (he is a typical Arthur Moore embryonic chaser), however he hopefully can get his name onto the board at the lesser tracks over hurdle.

KERCABELLEC (FR):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Nicky Henderson
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Kercabellec joined presnet connections during the summer having finished second to Heritier in a hurdle at Fontainebleau in March, when trained by Guillame Macaire. He's a nice long term prospect for steeplechasing next term, who should make his presence felt during the remainder of the season over hurdles.

LOVE DITTY (FR):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Willie P Mullins
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Love Ditty, a four year old by Green Tune shown promise on the flat finishing in the frame in three of his last six runs, including last time out at Lion-D'Angers at the end of March, when he was beaten half a length by the winner Campinas. He is a nice hurdles prospect, without suggesting that he'll be anything particularly special.

MANIATIS:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Micky Hammond
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Maniatis is a very interesting purchase, having won twice at Bath as a two year old, as well as at Windsor in May, where he beat Xtra. He must have a problem because he was picked up at Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale for 15,000 guineas. Considering he was a fair fifth to The Whistling Teal (btn 14lengths) in the St Simon Stakes (Class A) (Group 3) last weekend, he could be an extremely shrewd purchase .... I'll be looking out for him.

MUSKATSTURM (GER):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Barney Curley
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Muskatsturm is a three year old gelding by Lecroix who won four of his eleven starts, when trained in in Germany by Mario Hofer, his most recent success being a Handicap at Köln in October.. It'll be interesting to see how this shrewd outfit place him this season.

SIR CUMFERENCE:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Henrietta Knight
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Sir Cumference caught he ye on his debut for Henrietta Knight at Exeter on 19.12.02... He travelled well throughout, but come only stay on at the one pace when the pace quickened turning for home. He may have found the trip taxing him on his first effort and he will be interesting if he appears in the near future over a slightly shorter trip.

SUBIACO (GER):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Barney Curley
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Subiaco is a five year old gelding by Monsun who won six of his eighteen starts in Germany (he was placed on nine other occasions), the most recent of these victories coming in the Betty Barclay-Rennen (Group 3) at Baden-Baden in May '01. His last run in Germany was in the Deutsche Post Euro Express-Preis von Europa (Group 1), where he finished 9lengths behind Well Made, which was more of a reflection of his worth than his effort behind The Whistling Teal in the St Simon Stakes. With credentials like this you'd expect him to win if he takes to hurdles and it should be interesting to see how he progresses this winter.

TINOVERITAS (FR):¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Paul Nicholls
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Tinoveritas is a huge son of Saint Estephe, who showed plenty of promise on his debut at Exeter on 06.12.02 despite running green. He made the winner Enitsag pull out all the stops after travelling kindly throughout and bar his immaturity may have gone closer. He will come on loads for the experience and should go one better before the end of the season.

VICTORIA STONE:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Alan King
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Victoria Stone is an unraced half-sister by Old Vic to winning chaser Hurricane Lamp. She is still too pleasing connections and may appear in a bumper during the second half of the season. … Hopefully she'll show some promise for next season.

ATLASTABOY :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Tom R George
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Atlastaboy ran a decent race on his last start at Folkestone on 17.12.02, making most after the 2nd flight, until being headed before the last, eventually finishing 15legths behind the winner Murphy's Cardinal. This on paper looks to have been a decent race and it will be a surprise if a repeat of this form doesn't see him get into the winners enclosure at some stage this winter .. He is a lovely chasing prospect for next term.

BRITISH VOLUNTEER :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Charlie Mann
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- British Volunteer was in ONE TO JUMP 2002, however didn't manage to build on a promising first effort under rules. He certainly looks capable of finding a race if judged on his good third to Rodalko on 25.11.02, especially if connection are realistic about his ability.

BROWN (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Jacque Ortet in France
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Brown is one of the most attractive horses I've seen recently. This three year old gelding by Lost Worth simply towered over his rivals in the second race on Pau's card on 14.12.02, (his debut), and for the majority of the race travelled like the winner. He led into the straight, however he weakened rapidly, giving the impression that he wasn't quite physically ready for this. He will have learnt a lot from this and will improve significantly on this effort... If I had the cash I'd buy him!!!.

CAPTAIN'S LEAP :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Lenny Lungo
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Captain's Leap made an encouraging appearance at Newcastle on 25.11.02 when he stayed on nicely to finish 5th to Spree Vision (btn 14-½ lengths, giving the impression that that a step up in trip will suit. This six year old son of Grand Plaisir looks capable of winning a race this season.

JUFUL TENNIS (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Francois Cottin
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Juful Tennis has shown a little promise in France before joining Francois Cottin's yard, On his most recent start this five year old of Useful, was third to Jérico Vallis and Jeux Olympiques in the Prix Oteuil SF (Chase) at Auteuil in September... Staying novice hurdles will be where you'll see the best of him this season, however he'd be better going back over fences.

MICKEY CROKE :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- C R Egerton
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>-Mickey Crowe was made third favourite to win on his debut in a bumper at Hereford on 03.12.02, however whilst he showed a bit of promise he eventually was 14-½ lengths behind the winner Cloudy Grey. I liked what I saw of this on of Alflora and he may be worth another chance, especially when his stable are in better form.

OUR VIC :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Martin C Pipe
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Old Vic just missed the cut for this year's ONE TO JUMP feature, however he confirmed himself as a horse with potential on his debut at Exeter on 06.12.02. This four year old son of Old Vic won an Irish point-to-point before joining Martin Pipe and ran as though needing a trip. I've seen Nicholashayne inmates jump better, however he has an engine under the bonnet and galloped this field into the ground. The injury to Mister Wellard detracts from the form , however he is probably one to keep the right side of for the remainder of the season - hence his inclusion in this list.

RUNNING ON (AUS) :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- M Halford
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Running On stepped up considerably on his three previous efforts over hurdles when beating all bar Rosaker on his latest start at Fairyhouse on 14.12.02. He was prominent throughout and made the winner Rosaker pull out all the stops to get past him, only going down by a head. He should be well up to winning a maiden judged on this performance.

SAMBY :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- O M C Sherwood
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Samby; a four year old son of Anshan is one of the most attractive horses I seen out so far this season and dwarfed many of his rivals on his debut at Warwick on 26.11.02. He ran a cracker despite being very green. He raced wide of his field throughout and looked the likeliest winner for most of the race, however his lack of maturity told in the straight and bluntly he snatched defeat from near-certain success... If he matures mentally this term, he should win a race, however he is a better prospect for next term.

SAY SAY (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- F Rohaut in France
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Say Say was the second horse to catch my eye on Pau's card on 14.12.02, though this three year old filly won his race over 3500m. She'd won her previous start at Agen in March having finished just out of the frame on her previous four starts. She was quick and economical and was always going better than her rivals and is value for more than the 4lngths winning margin indicates. She should find more opportunities during the winter

SINDAPOUR :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Martin C. Pipe
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Sindapour is an Aga Khan "cast-off" whose found his way to Nicholashayne... This four year old isn't a bad prospect, being a son of Priolo, out of Sinntara, who won races over 14-16f for John Oxx. He hasn't raced since coming fourth over 7f at the Curragh in September '00, however he should have benefited from his break from racing. Hopefully well see some signs of promise this winter.

SWORDLESTOWN :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- Ted M Walsh
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- I decided to leave Swordlestown out of ONE TO JUMP this season as I wasn't sure whether he'd race under rules. I've since noticed however that this winner of a maiden point-to-point at Brosna is now in the care of Ted Walsh and I'm sure this four year old son of Zaffaran will be placed to good effect this winter

THANX DIRECTORY :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>-T J Etherington
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Although ultimately beaten a long way by the winner Armaguedon, I though Thanx Directory ran well on her debut at Newcastle on 25.11.02. This three year old daughter of Mukaddamah never really ever got competitive but stayed on at one pace, suggesting that she may be better in a two miler bumper... she's no great shakes but she is good enough to win a race.

TOURNIQUET :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- D J Caro
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Tourniquet, a huge son of Torus, is a half-brother to the smart Classified. He is another Irish point-to-point winner who will have gone into many notebooks, having made Balinahinch Castle pull out all of the stops to beat him at Warwick on 04.11.02. He might have prevailed if he'd had a run and should be difficult to beat next time out. He is another decent chasing prospect for next term.

VULCAN LANE (NZ) :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- N B Mason
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Punters who got their fingers burnt siding with Tee Components at Newcastle on 16.12.02, might want to monitor the future efforts of this five year old son of Star Way as he is better than the final finishing position (9th btn 41lengths) suggests. He was given every chance by his lady pilot and actually was travelling like a winner turning for home, however he went to pieces went let down and was allowed to come home in his own time .. It will be no surprise to see this horse win a race, though it may be later on in the season (probably in a handicap).

WAIN MOUNTAIN :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>-Jim A. B. Old
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- I really like Wain Mountain and he has ran an encouraging race over 2-½ miles at Chepstow on 27.11.02 where he stayed on in really good style to finish 4lengths behind the winner Asador. A return to 3miles surely beckons and this useful novice chaser from last term looks capable of going well in some of the better staying handicap steeple-ch.

WATERSPRAY (AUS) :¬>-
The Trainer :¬>- J L Spearing
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Australian Waterspray has put together two solid effort since joining John Spearing's yard, with his third to Laõuen at Doncaster on 14.12.02 being the better effort. On that occasion, he never gave the impression that he would trouble the winner, however hinted strongly that a dip into handicap company could bring its rewards... This four year old son of Lake Coniston is certainly going the right way.

cast offs - one to jump 2003
Friday, November 29, 2002
Producing this year's ONE TO JUMP 2003 has proved to be a massive task. We actually ended up with far too many horses in the list as a result we've had a bit of a cull and we've decided to start this season's with a list of horses that almost made it into the main "ONE TO JUMP" feature

ALMANZOR (CZE) : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- R Holcak in Poland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Probably the best chaser in the Czech Republic at the moment, I didn't know that much about this horse, however I remember reading how Ferdy Murphy stated how this horse had murdered Paddy's Return in a Steeple chase. I did a bit of investigation and found a record of the Paramo Gold Cup (Steeplechase), held at Pardubice in June. It appears on that occasion that Almanzor jumped off and set a strong gallop and ran his rivals ragged, eventually winning by a distance. He supplemented that success over course and distance five weeks later and has since run his best race ever, making virtually all the running until the last in the XLVIII C. Siepi Di Merano (Hurdle) (gr.1). Présent Bleu and Valgano headed him, however he fought back bravely on the run-in and only just failed to get back up. He demands respect wherever he races.

AVEC PLAISIR :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Tom R George
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Avec Plaisir was a promising novice hurdlers two seasons ago. Although he didn't win any of his three starts, he did finish second to It Takes Time in a novice hurdle at Doncaster in January 2001. he clearly met with a setback afterwards, however is reported now going over fences and should go close to winning his first race.

BALLYBAY DEMENSE :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Luke Dace
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Ballybay Demense is a six year old gelding by Bob Back, who won a maiden point to point at Punchestown Racecourse in February. He may not be any world beater, however he could be placed to win a staying novice chase at the minor courses.

BEST GREY :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Edward J O'Grady in Ireland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- I like Best Grey. he is a big grey gelding by Ezzoud who was a useful horse when trained in his native Italy. he was bought to go jumping by connections at the end of 2000, and hasn't done too badly - winning once from four starts last term at Fairyhouse in February where he beat Adamant Approach. he has continued to progress this term, winning a 2-½ mile handicap at the Galway festival before running respectably over 2miles behind Young American at Tralee at the end of august...He didn't run after that, however I'm sure there's more to come, especially where the emphasis is placed on his stamina.

BOLTON BARRIE :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Norman B Mason
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Bolton Barrie is at the time of writing an unraced four year old son of Broken Hearted. His sire is an increasing source of winners over obstacles so there is every chances that he could eventually get into the winner enclosure... He wont be rushed by connections however so expect a gradual progression.

CA NE FAIT RIEN :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Norman M Babbage
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Ca Ne Fait Rien could be interesting during the second half of the season. He showed signs of ability in each of his three runs in bumpers - finishing seventh on his debut at Ludlow in March, before staying on in eye-catching style to finish fourth at Market Rasen behind Rodolfo at the end of April. He again was noted making late progress on his final start at Worcester three weeks later finishing 17lengths behind the winner Trinket. I get the impression that the gun hasn't been put to Ca Ne Fait Rien's head at all and he is the sort of horse that will benefit with each but experience over hurdles before attempting to plunder a handicap

CHASE THE SUNSET : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Henrietta Knight
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Chase The Sunset is an attractive son of Un Desperado who I've liked ever since seeing him on a Racing Channel Stable tour about 18months ago. Connections think a lot of this gelding, so I'd like to think he'll show some promise this winter, probably in bumpers

CLOUDY SKY :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Nicky Henderson
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Cloudy Sky, who hasn't raced since finishing in mid division in the 1999 running of the Godolphin Stakes (Class A) (Listed Race), clearly developed a leg, but it is interesting that connections are persevering with him. Cloudy Sky hails from a good middle-distance family and could be very interesting if he retained any of that potential ... it will be interesting to see what connections do with him.

CYBERGENIC (FR) : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Jehan Bertran De Balanda in France
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Owner Alec Head stated earlier this year that he was keen to have a go with Cybergenic over British obstacles. One of last season's best juveniles, Cybergenic won three races, however chased home leading juvenile Saint De Saints on several occasions. Maybe Alec Head has had a change of heart as I've noted that the horse has been entered up in novice chases, however he is a useful individual, who would be worth taking seriously if he did make the journey across the channel.

DROMBEAG :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Jonjo O'Neill
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Drombeag, a four year old gelding by Presenting is the winner of a maiden point-to-point at Lemonfield in March. He has since been bought by an owner of Jonjo O'Neill and could do well in middle distance novice hurdles this winter.

EL LUTE :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Mrs Brian Hutchinson in Ireland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- El Lute is a six year old by Abednego, who did well between the flags in Ireland last term, finishing second at Dromahane at the end of April before winning his maiden at Muskerry in May. Connections believe he's quick enough to win under rules so could run well in bumper at a nice price

EPITRE : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- (Andre Fabre in france)
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Epitre would be an interesting addition to the national hunt ranks. He was a decent three year old winning four times including the 2000 running of the Prix De Lutece (Group 2) and Prix H De Chaudaray (Group 2); both at Longchamp over 3,000m. He hasn't won since and has been inconsistently throwing in the occasional howler in between solid efforts in Group company. going jumping might rekindled some of his old enthusiasm and he could be interesting if connections are brave enough to have a go.

EURO LEADER :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Willie P Mullins in Ireland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- . Euro Leader is an unraced four year old gelding by Supreme Leader who is pleasing connections at home . Hopefully he can show some promise bumpers this winter,

FLORIDA COAST :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- James Bowe
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- James Bowe is a truly lucky owner, to have not only Limestone Lad in his care, but also Solerina and Florida Coast (her half half-brother by the sire Florida Son). This seven year old has clearly been difficult to train, however demonstrated he possesses ability having been placed in two bumpers during the 2000/1 season behind Hour of Need and Like-A-Butterfly. Injury kept him off of the racecourse until this October, where he managed to win a Maiden on the flat over 2 miles in November, when he outstayed Montasareen to win by 2lengths. If he takes to obstacles, he should be able to win a race this season.

JALOUX D'ESTRUVAL (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Mrs L C Taylor
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Jaloux D'Estruval is a big scopey five year old son of Kadalko, ran three times last term without success, but hinted at possessing plenty of ability. He ran far too freely on his debut at Southwell, tiring in the straight to finish third to Ray Source. He went backwards afterwards however that may have been more due to him still being on the weak side, than any anything else. He will improved as he matures but maybe seen to best effect this term over fences.

JAZZ DES MOTTES (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- : Eric Lellouche in france
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Although he currently is in the care of Eric Lellouche, I'd be surprised if a British trainer didn't come in for this gelding. Jazz Des Mottes, a five year old son of Dadarissime has been in good form of late winning three of his last four starts including the Prix des A.Q.P.S. (Non-Thoroughbreds) at Clairefontaine in August. Even if he isn't bought, he should do well over hurdles in france

JOUEUR D'ESTRUVAL (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Willie P Mullins in Ireland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Joueur d'Estruval should do well over obstacle this winter. He ran three times in bumpers last season, winning on his debut at Fairyhouse in March, before finishing fourth to Supreme Developer in the Paddy Power Champion I.N.H. Flat Race (Grade 1) at Punchestown in April. He was given an outing on the flat and didn't disgrace himself finishing a close second to Hat or Halo at Leopardstown in June. If he has schooled well, he shouldn't be too far the best over hurdles this season.

KAPGARDE (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Guillaume Macaire in France
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Whilst slicking through the entries on France-Galop's website I noticed that three year old colt was amongst the entries . He is a half-brother to leading British hurdler Geos, by the sire Garde Royale. He clearly has needed time to come to himself, but is a nice long-term prospect.

LEINSTER :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Dessie Hughes in Ireland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Leinster only had one run last term, in a Punchestown bumper in April, but it was an impressive one - after travelling well throughout, he quickened up to lead over a furlong out before drawing clear to win in impressive style. He should make his presence felt in maiden hurdles next season.

LOUGAROO (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Guillame Macaire
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Lougaroo is a horse that I hope will improve as the season progress, he has only just come into training however he has already run twice, winning on his second start on the flat at Mont Luc.... I'm sure Lougaroo will soon be trying his luck over obstacles and hopefully will build on this initial experience.

MALKO (FR) :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Paul Nicholls
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Malko is an unraced three-year-old son of Nikos who's dam was a winner twice in France. He was bought for 40,000 gns by Paul Nichols at Doncaster's spring sale and is one to note for bumpers in the new year.

MUGHAS :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- (Kevin Prendergast)
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Mughas; a three year old son of Sadlers Wells ran creditably on the flat this term, when trained by Kevin Prendergast in Ireland... He didn't win, however was placed in four of his seven starts over trips between 8-13f. He was a recent purchase at the Horses in Training sales at Newmarket, and looks to be the right sort to do well over hurdles this winter.

NEWSPLAYER :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- R T Phillips
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Newsplayer showed promise in three bumpers last term. He was tenth on his debut at Wincanton behind Flame Creek, he then ran arguably his best race when finishing two lengths behind Old Bean at Ludlow in May. Although he was beaten 30lengths. He again showed promise on his final start when finishing seventh to Maybe The Business at Ayr on Scottish Grand National day. This six year old son of Alphabatim has shown enough promise to land a novice event around the gaffs, but may be better in handicap company

NEXT TO NOTHING : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Nicky Richards
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Next To Nothing should do well for Nicky Richards this winter. This five year old son of Bob's Return is another bumper in my list whose is related to winner over obstacles. I don't have high expectations of him, other than he comes from a stable that does well in bumpers. .. hopefully he can find opportunities on the northern circuit this winter.

NIL DESPERANDUM : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Frances Crowley
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- As a fan of the sire Un Desperado (who really stamps his progeny). I'll be hoping that Nil Desperandum can show some promise this term for Frances Crowley, initially in bumpers before possibly over hurdlers later on in the season.

ORACLE DES MOTTES (FR) : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Paul F Nicholls
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Has had two outings on the Flat in the French Provinces this summer, both over 1m4f, winning the second at Cluny in September. He hasn't been here long, but I like what I have seen.

OYSTER SHELL :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Nicky Henderson
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Oyster Shell is a five year old gelding by Be My Native, who won a maiden point-to-point at Castletown Geoghegan, at the end of March. He was regarded as pretty smart, so is one to look out for in Novice hurdles this winter.

ROSENCA (FR)
The Trainer, :¬>- Anthony J Martin in Ireland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Rosenca has shown plenty of promise in three bumpers running his best race to date when finishing second to Mullacash at Cork in May. This six year old gelding should improve mentally/physically as the season progresses and will be seen to better effect over obstacles during the remainder of the season.

SEAN AT THE IVY (FR) : ¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Paul F Nicholls
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Sean From the Ivy is an unraced three year old son of Nikos from a good family, who has been showing plenty of promise at home. He may have enough talent to win a bumper during the second half of the season.

SHUIL BACK :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Alastair J Liddledale
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Shuil Back is bred to be a useful mare being by Bob Back , out of Shuil Ar Aghaidh, a decent staying hurdler, who amongst her successes won the 1993 Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle. Shuil Back has only had he one run, but she showed plenty of promise, staying on at one pace to finish third to Sh Boom in a Towcester Bumper at the beginning of April. She is bred to appreciate a trip and could her mark in a mare's novice hurdle on a staying track this term.

SIX OF ONE :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Richard Rowe
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Six of One is a four year old gelding by Kayhasi who won two of his twelve starts in France over 2900m at Durtal in May as well as a Handicap over 2500m at Maison-Lafitte in September. He was purchased at the recent Goffs Horses in Training Sale for €68,000 by present connections and should be an interesting recruit for the country circuit this winter.

THE REAL BANDIT :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Martin C Pipe
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- The Real Bandit, a five year old gelding by Torus has had one start in a maiden point-to-point at Lismoore in March. He was subsequently sold to one of Martin Pipe's connections and should be able to progress this winter in middle distance novice hurdles.

THE RELIC (NZ) :¬>-
The Trainer, :¬>- Henrietta Knight
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- The Relic has a similar background to The Argonaut who did so well for Fulke Walwyn a decade or so ago, as he was in training in New Zealand before spending a couple of years as an event horse (successfully competing at novice level). Connections clearly believe he is better than that and Henrietta Knight has been given the job of proving them right or wrong.

WARRENS CASTLE :¬>-,
The Trainer, :¬>- Willie P Mullins in Ireland
C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S. :¬>- Warrens Castle is an unraced son of the american sire Fourstars Allstar. Who is pleasing connections at home . Hopefully he can show some promise bumpers this winter,

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices' Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.
Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with "A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27 days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he'd have been an excellent eachway wager}.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Mount Gay,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Misty Ridge,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Ashgar [USA],

Mount Gay obliged at odds of 7/1.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 20th July
Tote Scoop6 Summer Plate. (H'cap Steeple Ch.). £65000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f, 16 runners.
"As much as I like Demasta, there is so much pace here, that I cant help but think that the front runners may go too fast for their own good here. It makes sense [in my view], to be looking for something likely to be able to travel well... and despite my very negative comments above... I have (since the runners were declared), had a lot of time for the chance of Chicuelo (at eachway odds). I think some horses suit certain trainers, and I think this horse has a better chance of winning a race like this with Martin Pipe than Ian Williams - not because I necessarily think Pipe is a far better trainer than Williams is... its more to do with understanding this type of horse. Nicholashayne - more than most training establishments - does particularly with their foreign purchases. I think this is in part because due to the amount of time/effort they have invested into studying not only french form, but also how certain trainers educate their young horses - adopting if/when necessary previous regime/style of training. Secondly, (more importantly), some french breds improve after a season's acclimatization. A look at this horse's form in France and you'll find, for example, his good third to Sleeping Night and Ilnamar (beaten 8½lengths) in the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Grade 3) , or his third to Sleeping Night and Douze Douze in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase Des 4 Ans (Chase) (Grade 1) in November 2000. He has certainly been given a chance here off of only a handicap rating of 116, and I can't see him not finishing in the first four.... He'll do for me".
"ANOTHER WINNER FOR "ONE TO JUMP 2003"

WORCESTER
Sunday, June 9th 2002
Tote betXpress Hurdle {H' cap}. £20000 added, 4yo plus, 2m, penalty £13897, 14 runners.
Cupboard Lover, Saragann, Dick The Taxi, Barren Lands, Boater, Bernardon, Inn Antique, Barren Lands, and Knight's Emperor make most appeal in a decent handicap hurdle for this time of year. There is bound to be market support for Cupboard Lover, especially after his smooth win at Newbury on the flat earlier this week, however in Bernardon, and Inn Antique, he meets two potentially well treated "improvers". I have a high regard for Bernardon, who I literally haven't stopped raving about. This former Group winner in Germany is much better than the form he showed when trailing home at Chepstow last time out, and off of this handicap mark, he is worth chancing.
Bernardon held on to score at odds of 13/2

ASCOT
Saturday 16th February, 2002
1:30 Amlin Reynoldstown Novices' Steeple Ch. {Gr.2}
Realistically, course and distance winner Arctic Jack, Father McCarten, High Cotton and Ex-French recruit Jimmy Tennis are the likeliest winners of this Grade 2 event. I have a healthy regard for Arctic Jack, and I'm certain he'll run creditably here, however, I've been monitoring Jimmy Tennis's career and always thought that he could make the grade over here. He was one of the better four-year-old chasers in France in 2001 and despite an absence of 140 days hopefully can make best use of the weight for age allowances he receives here.
JIMMY TENNIS won - 3/1

2:00 William Hill H’cap Hurdle
A very competitive handicap hurdle with several of these having strong claims. Farmer Jack, Teaatral, Lord Brex, Aspirant Dancer, Creon, Mr Markham, and Ideal du Bois Beury all have serious claims. Father Jack (who was probably ridden too positively last time out) is sure to go well and probably would have been my selection if Ideal du Bois Beury hadn't been in opposition. I thought he won with a bit in hand under top weight at Leicester last time out and looks very appealing off of the minimum weight.
IDEAL DU BOIS BEURY won - 10/1
