THE GALWAY FESTIVAL 2001 -

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular  may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, I have given you who, in my view, are the likeliest winners, as well as horses who could run well at eachway odds. 'R*ecommended' horses have, in our view, the best chances of success each day. Any horses from our 'Horses To Follow' list are shown at the foot of each race's analysis.

POSTING TIMES FOR SELECTIONS_ Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps

GALWAY
Sunday 5th August
2:00 Ready To Go Beginners Chase
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> I've been a fan of Saor Theas for a while now, and after showing promise over the smaller obstacles he gets the opportunity to try fences where I'd expect him to improve on previous form. Akasian looks the chief danger
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Saor Theas,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Winter Whisper,

2:30 Eircell Info Services Maiden Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Paddy's Orchestra, who ran respectably over hurdles before bagging two wins in bumpers is selected in the hope that he is fit enough to show his real worth here on his first effort for 400+ days. Tigullio is the one to beat
[NØ.1 CHOICE] -->Paddy's Orchestra,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Jack Duggan

3:00 High Speed Data Handicap Hurdle (Div I)
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Circus Maximus who ran well earlier in the week is a hopeful selection in division one of this handicap hurdle. Farinel, didn't run too badly last time and is the eachway option
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Circus Maximus (USA)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] -->Farinel,

3:35 High Speed Data Handicap Hurdle (Div II)
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Deckie, who won nicely here on Friday evening should go well if turning out again here. Pollstar, and U Jump I Jump are the main threats
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Deckie,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Junior Fontaine (FR )

4:05 Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Ceann Amhain Eile who ran well behind Jumbo Romance at Leopardstown come from a stable that has been in its usual excellent form during the week. Despite a poor draw he has a decent eachway chance on the book
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Ceann Amhain Eile, (e/w)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[ALTERNATIVE] --> Polish Legion,

4:35 Eircell All @ Once Handicap (Premier Handicap)
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->One Won One who boasts group form at this trip is almost guaranteed to give of his best and is probably the safest bet.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> One Won One (USA)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Gold Chaser,

5:05 Western Cellular Rated Race
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Murrayfield who was strongly supported when meeting trouble in running here earlier in the week is capable of a good deal better, and could be a sporting bet against likely favourite Aquila Oculus, who won earlier in the week .
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Murrayfield (USA)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Rachael's Delight,

5:35 Vodafone Eurocall I.N.H. Flat Race
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Kilcrea Shyan, who was placed in a similar event earlier in the week will be popular to round off the Festival with another Dermot Weld-trained winner, however Devondale's pedigree, and jockey booking catches the eye and i'll take a chance with him here
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Devondale
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Monbonami,

GALWAY
Saturday 4th August
2:30 Jockeys Association Beginners Chase
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Kilcash Castle, stands out on form here, and probably only needs to jump round to score here.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Kilcash Castle,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Ceannairceach,

3:00 Low Low Galway Blazers Handicap Chase
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Hardiman who won earlier in the week could go well despite topweight. He meets market rival Rockholm Boy, on better terms than he did in a valuable handicap at Kilbeggan last time, and had better form than likely favourite Search For Peace. Mr Rufo who is 23lb better off with Hardiman than earlier in the week could get into the money.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Hardiman
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Mr Rufo,

3:35 Dawn Milk Handicap Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Macabeo, runner-up to the smart Bannow Bay in the corresponding race, can go one better, chiefly at the expense of Aunt Aggie
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Macabeo
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Ear To The Ground,

4:05 Dawn Hi and Lo European Breeders Fund Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Dermot Weld has won five of the last ten runnings of this event, and therefore Rahn must be respected despite making his debut here
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Rahn,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Jimjonpaddal,

4:35 European Breeders Fund Premier Nursery Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Brooklyn, Prize Time, Sri, Golden Glow, Jakeal, and Master Papa, all have claims in the fifth. Sri, whose run well in her last two starts, most recently behind Miss Beabea at Leopardstown over 6furlongs, may improve for the step up in trip and is a sporting eachway option to likely favourite Brooklyn
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Sri , (e/w)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[ALTERNATIVE] --> Brooklyn

5:05 Kerry Spring Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Following the victory of Kalingalinga here on Wednesday, where i stated that the horse was hard to fancy and was best overlooked. Barney Curley sets another poser here with Malakal formerly trained by John Oxx. Like Kalingalinga, Malakal has dubious form but appears to be well treated off of only 40 here. I wont be having a penny on him, but he does stand out that the proverbial sore thumb.
If a public gamble gathers pace
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Malakal
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Moscow Express,

5:35 Kerry Maid Festival I.N.H. Flat Race
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Rockwell Island who made a winning debut at Naas, is fancied to follow up, chiefly at the expense of Slainte
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Rockwell Island
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Lord Edwards Army,

GALWAY
Friday 3rd August
5:00 Budweiser (QR) Handicap Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Deckie, was a winning selection at Tipperary last week, and judging by his pedigree, could have a future over the larger obstacles. He doesn't look badly treated here, and surely should go close here
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Deckie
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Quiet Millfit (USA)

5:30 Smithwicks Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Dermot weld's record at Galway will ensure that Beat The Heat will go off favourite . His good third behind Ice Dancer and Crimphill at Leopardstown will stand him in good stead however the attractive bred filly Dibiya, may just be good enough to hold him at bay
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Dibiya,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Snake Mountain (USA)

6:00 Tony O'Malley Memorial Handicap Chase
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Having suggested Donadino as an eachway alternative to Grime in the Galway Plate, I cant pass him over in a lesser event here.... Heres hoping for that clear round this time around
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Donadino
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Clan Royal (FR )

6:40 Guinness Extra Stout Handicap (Premier Handicap)
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Yayo, who has thus far been disappointing over hurdle, boast useful form in France, good enough to take this prize
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Yayo
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Knysna Lily (USA)

7:15 Harp Lager Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Blackmail (USA)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Blackmail, a winner and a runner-up from two Naas starts is just preferred to Naahil, in this 1m½f handicap
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Fast And Furious,

7:50 Carlsberg Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Oileann Oir second to Gravy Train at Naas last time out, occupied that position on his debut behind Sri at Sligo. He appears to have sound place claims and could be a sporting alternative to Manchester, who could well win this if appreciate ting the step up to 7furlongs.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Oileann Oir, (e/w)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[ALTERNATIVE] --> Manchester

8:25 Guinness Extra Cold Race
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Sage Dancer is certain to stay this 1m6f of the last race, that makes him more appealing that First Son, who has the best form [around 8lbs officially in hand of his rivals], but has nor raced over further than 1m2f
[NØ.1 CHOICE] -->Sage Dancer (USA)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Independence Hall,

GALWAY
Thursday 2nd August
1:50 Guinness Novice Chase
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Tisrabraq, Aerleon Pete, Carina Bay, Hot Shots (FR), Coq De Mirande (FR) and Double Account (FR) look best in the opener. Arthur Moore is strongly represented here, and his mare Coq De Mirande, who won at Navan and Killarney, before finding Carina Bay too good at Wexford, looks the one to be on. Tisrabraq, an early faller earlier in the week, should go close if he puts in a clear round, but is too risking for my liking
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Coq De Mirande (FR)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Hot Shots (FR),

2:25 Harp Lager Novice Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->The Baltimore Man and Golden Row, who met on their most recent starts at Tipperary clash again in the second. On that occasion The Baltimore Man made all and withheld the late thrust of Golden Row by 3/4 lengths, Golden Row didn't find as much as expected when let down. A summary scenario can occur again, howevr on slightly better term, I wouldnt be surprised if their positions were reversed ..... or that's what i'm hoping!!
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Golden Row,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Rapsan,

3:00 St James's Gate Handicap Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Rightontime, Muskerry King, Great Days, Newlands, Akasian, Oneofthesimpsons, Cardinal Mark, Anjlore, Scallybuck, Triptodicks, and The Gypsy Baron all have claims in an open stayers handicap hurdle. Rightontime, will probably have been earmarked for this by trainer Christy Roche, and a bold bid can be expected however he may be a poor price, and Newlands, unbeaten in two starts over hurdles, is unexposed .. and interesting off of only 10-4
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Newlands (e/w)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Rightontime,

3:45 Guinness Galway Handicap Hurdle (Grade B)
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Ulundi looks to have decent claims in the Galway Hurdle. He is already being touted as a champion Hurdle horse for next year in which case you'd expect his to take this off of only 10-2. This will not be an easy assignment though as Ansar, Patriot Games, Darialann, Grimes, Timber King, Vivo, Albatros (FR) and Masalarian, will be doing their damnest to ensure the prize stays at home. Grimes could well dictate and ensure that this isn't for the fainthearted, and this should suit the runners listed above. I can see Ulundi going close, however Timber King, looks like he's been laid out for this, and his defeat of Darapour at lest shows that he is in good heart. He is sure to go well off of only 10-0 and is preferred. Masalarian is another prepped for this and could make the places
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Timber King,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Masalarian

4:25 Guinness Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Silver Dagger; 9lb higher as a result of beating Gold Chaser at The Curragh, appears to have strong claims in race five. He is preferred to Backcraft, and Common Venture,
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Silver Dagger
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Common Venture,

5:00 Smithwicks Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Embroider, an unexposed three year old filly has only hinted at ability, however she inst highly tried here and had a good chance of getting into the frame ... at the very least
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Embroider (e/w),
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[ALTERNATIVE] --> Celtic Lore,

5:35 Guinness E.B.F. Fillies Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Cheal Rose
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Effervescent,

6:05 Guinness Extra Cold (Pro-Am) INH Flat Race
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Walnut Creek 9th to Ned Kelly on his most recent start under rules looks very attractive in an average affair ... he's sure to go well here and is the selection.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Walnut Creek.
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Irishman

GALWAY
Wednesday 1st August
1:50 Compaq AlphaServer SC Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Darapour, and Goldenhalo are the likeliest winners of the opener on Galway Plate Day. Darapour is a frustrating individual, who beat beating Abaco at Clonmel on his last effort. I'm not a fan and whilst he is the form horse, he has thrown away far too many winning opportunities to be followed with any confidence. Goldenhalo is at least honest, and consistent, and will exploit any weakness that is shown by the likely favourite. He is preferred
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Goldenhalo
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Don't like the "form horse" Darapour, as he is not the most consistent of runners
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] -->

2:25 Compaq Software Publishing Services Handicap Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Bless 'Im Best Grey, The Anner Boy, Samasakhan, Sabbatical, Land Of Time, Karowna, Commanche Pride, Hazel's Tisrara, Rightontime, Opaque, Mona Day, Tessano Queen, and Marakiya, all have claims in an open handicap hurdle. Rightontime, is likely to go off favourite following his prominent run in a 2m Flat maiden at Wexford earlier in the month . He could be well handicapped if he is able to translate his smart bumper form of last summer to hurdle, and should give a good account of himself. I prefer Best Grey who ran well despite some indifferent jumping, when finishing a creditable third to Vivo at Killarney 15 days ago. He is open to further improvement , and is another who could still be well weighted if he is able to perform to the level of his ability shown on the level
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Best Grey
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Samasakhan

3:00 Compaq Software Acquisition Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Wimbledon, Gemini Guest, Veronica Cooper, Namibia, Teach Beaumont, Vivid, Near Dunleer, Chanoud , Emerald Heights, Atlanticus, Russian Comrade, Celtic Lore, Benfica, and Magzaa have claims in the third, a 1m 4f Handicap . I'm not overly confident here, and Vivid, who has run creditably on both of her starts this term, most recently when coming 3rd to Royal Jubilee at Dundalk is my token offering over Emerald Heights, who ran well behind Namibia on his latest effort, and Celtic Lore who has a good record at this track.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] -->Vivid (e/w)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[ALTERNATIVE] --> Celtic Lore

3:40 GALWAY PLATE (Handicap Chase) (Grade B)
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->-Grimes, Monty's Pass, Francis Bay, Quinze, Dovaly, Rathbawn Prince, Donadino, Moscow Express, More Than A Stroll, River Cora, Monnaie Forte, and Lanturn, all have the form to take this prestigious prize. Grimes stands out here on 10-1. He is a top class hurdler on a featherweight. He could be the proverbial good thing, however there must be doubts about him getting home over this trip, and more importantly, getting round, he is still to win over fences, and whilst he has form, it is fortunate that this year's renewal isn't the competitive big field, [which the is usually the norm] and would have made him totally unappealing. If he gets round he'll probably win, however as was the case on Saturday, there seems little point in making him the no.1 choice. Instead I offer last year's winner Dovaly who has been given the same studious preparation that enabled him to beat Monty's Pass last term, Donadino, who is unexposed at this sort of trip, and was an easy winner at Roscommon on his most recent attempt at a trip in excess of 2miles, and Francis Bay, a course-specialist who has been going well this summer on the level as alternatives to Grimes. I'm hoping that the ground doesn't have too much juice for Donadino who may the sporting alterative to the likely winner
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Donadino, (e/w)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[ALTERNATIVE] --> Grimes

4:25 Compaq Remarketing Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Murrayfield, Silver Spray, Forest Chief, Rashay, Tortue, Casas, Euphoric, Lichen, Lucky Bet, Montpelier Street, Diaspora, Liffeydale, Sorvino, and Truscott, head the market for the fifth. Murrayfield will probably start favourite, after having run well behind Last Theatre at Leopardstown. That was a decent effort [in the context of this race], and the fact he hails from Dermot Weld's stable is another added boost. He is the selection
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Murrayfield (USA),
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Montpelier Street,

5:00 Compaq iPAQ (QR) Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Standing Applause, Elaborate, Jasmin D'Oudairies, are the only ones that make any real appeal in the sixth race. Standing Applause has been a beaten favourite on his two most recent starts, however Dermot Weld could well have found him a winning opportunity. He has had his opportunities, and may be vulnerable here to Jasmin D'Oudairies the winner of a Killarney bumper who may well have the pace to be effective over this slightly shorter trip..
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Jasmin D'Oudairies (FR),
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> True Commotion

5:35 Compaq Software Installation Services Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->One More Round, and Without Pretense give Dermot Weld a strong hand in race seven. One More Round showed promise on his debut when finishing sixth to stablemate Diamond Trim at Leopardstown in April. Either he has met with a setback or he has been laid out for this event ... which ever is the case he will not be far way with luck in running, he is the selection.
Uliana
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> One More Round (USA)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Zaraglen,

6:05 Compaq Storage Products Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->The final race on Galway Plate day is impossible. Kalingalinga from Barney Curley's yard is a most interesting runner. He, Making A Break, Dellsboy, Detach, Iftitah, Daisy Dancer, Impulsif, Kilbride King, Queen For A Day, Christensen, and To Be Loved, are the ones I 'd consider against the field. Kalingalinga has clearly been laid out for this, and the market make speak volumes of his chance, however his 'form' doesn't offer much in the way of any real comfort, and I don't mind passing this one over. Instead I suggest Detach, who is progressing with each start, and who got his head in front for the first time at Dundalk, where he beat Christensen by a length. He appears to go on all surfaces, and has further improvement in him. He gets the vote
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Detach
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] -->Iftitah,

GALWAY
Tuesday 31st July
5:00 Albatros Feeds Maiden Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "LAST YEAR'S NH HORSES TO FOLLOW" FEATURE] -->BLUE
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Blue, Ciel d'Or, Wimbledon, Columba, and Get It On appeal most in the opener. As ex flat horses Blue, and Wimbledon, haven't quite achieved the sort of form that I would have expected, abased on their flat form, it may pay to take a chance with Get It On. He went into many observers notebooks, and drew the wrath of the stewards, when finishing a staying on third to Bust Out at Leopardstown last December . He may need this but is worth chancing
[NØ.1 CHOICE] -->Get It On
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Definite promise on his last run, worth chancing against disappointing types off of the flat
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Ontos (GER)

5:35 Albatros Plant Nutrition Chase
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Hardiman , Young Whack ,Native Performance, Tisrabraq, Carina Bay and See More Perks make plenty of appeal in Race two. Hardiman didn't run too badly behind Rockholm Boy and Spot Thedifference at Kilbeggan last time out, however I prefer Young Whack, who has won both his starts over fences at Tipperary, and Navan in the style of a useful horse. He could be worth keeping on the right side of for the remainder of the season
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Young Whack,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Young improving chaser who is less exposed than likely rival Hardiman
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Tisrabraq,

6:10 McDonogh Feeds E.B.F. Fillies Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Venus De Milo (USA), Teresita, and Saranac Lake (USA) appeal most in the third. Saranac Lake, hailing from Dermot Weld's yard has to be feared with her trainer's record at the track. She has ability as well having finished second to $4.4 million Mr Prospector colt Shah Jehan at Leopardstown, however its hard to know exactly how good that effort is with the winner disappointing next time out, and his stablemate Venus de Milo, who lost valuable ground at the start on her debut, should know more about what is required today and is marginally preferred
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Venus De Milo (USA),
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Green as grass on his debut, and hopefully will step on that here
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] -->

6:50 McDonogh European Breeders Fund Handicap (Listed)
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "LAST YEAR'S NH HORSES TO FOLLOW" FEATURE] -->SABRINSKY [FR]
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Twenty runners contest the fourth, and this looks a really tough race to call. Avorado, Osprey Ridge, Sabrinsky (FR ), Tarakan, Free To Speak, Right Honorable, Molly-O, Creux Noir, Diamond Trim, Sarraaf, and Clare Rose all appeal. Diamond Trim, Avorado, Tarakan. and Right Honorable, are all closely matched on their recent meetings at Leopardstown and the Curragh. I get the impression that Right Honourable is the 'improver' amongst them, having beaten Avorado and Diamond Trim last time at Leopardstown. even at slightly revised terms, it would surprised me if he confirmed positions. A word for Sabrinsky, another french import with Noel Meade, who didn't quite live up to expectations over jumps. Some of these purchases are worth forgiving a bad season, as they can take a while to acclimatise. He makes plenty of appeal at eachway odds
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Right Honorable
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Trappy race, formlines suggest that Right Honorable is still improving and he is a hopeful choice
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Sabrinsky (FR ),

7:25 McDonogh At Home Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Camaderry, Mambo Jambo, Fast And Furious, Love Academy, Clanboyo, Boley Lass, Grianan Realta, Impulsif (USA), No Frontier, Rachael's Delight, and Lady Ellen-M all appeal in an open handicap. Mambo Jambo, a good second to Ciara Flyer last time out at Leopardstown, is just preferred to likely favourite Camaderry, himself beaten by Ciara Flyer on his latest start
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Mambo Jambo,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Good effort last time out, looks to be still improving
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Fast And Furious.

8:00 McDonogh Interiors Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Love Me True (USA), Oriental Ben, Whisper Light, Marsh Harrier (USA), Serov, and Ceann Eile are short listed for the sixth on the card. Aiden O'Brien does appear to have found an ideal opportunity for Love Me True, who was only just beaten by Okey Dorey at Leopardstown last time out. A similar effort should be good enough here ...She is the selection.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Love Me True (USA)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Solid form in maiden company, gives her strong claims here
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Marsh Harrier (USA)

8:35 McDonogh Builders Trade Centre Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Bob's Gone, Countess Sybil, Berkeley Bay, Circus Maximus (USA), Sondheim, Roseau, and Panchita make most appeal in the last. Countess Sybil, a winner over 1m 6f at Killlarney on her latest start, has raced only twice, and is the least exposed of these, and is most open to further improvement. This trip should suit, and she should give a good account of herself, she is the selection. Topweight Circus Maximus, make well have been laid out for this by Dermot Weld, and has the form to make the frame
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Countess Sybil,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Countess Sybil, is the least exposed of these, and is open to more improvement.
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Circus Maximus (USA),

GALWAY
Monday 30th July
5:00 G.P.T. Sligo (4YO) Maiden Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "LAST SEASON'S HORSES TO FOLLOW" FEATURE] --> Snob Wells
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Sweet Brief, Snob Wells, Vatirisk, Soviet Blues, Victory Flight, Beaver Lodge, Waterwing, Diaz, Only One Matty, Lanmire Glen, Laurier Rose, and Sammagefromtenesse, are amongst the 26 runners who line up for the opener to the Galway Festival Meeting. I'd expect the winner to come from amongst this group. Noel Meade would have expected him to open his account over obstacles last winter, however whilst he ran well, he did disappoint. He clearly is in good heart as he ran well in a Flat handicap at The Curragh 16 days ago. Sweet Brief, and Vatirisk, , who he meets today made no show that day, however they represent much better opposition today. Sweet Brief who has useful form in Germany disapointed last time out over hurdles, however has since won on the flat. He is just preferred, but without any real conviction.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Sweet Brief (GER)
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Like several of the principal, Sweet Brief hasn't translated his flat ability to jumps. that said hi s form is good enough to go close here
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Lanmire Glen,

5:35 G.P.T. Dublin Ext. Handicap Hurdle
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Cantiam, Ansar, Dochas Mor, Johnny Ringo, Link Hill, Mail Man, Moon Shot, Wensum Dancer, Grimshaw, Karakam, Legal Crack, Shareef Khan, and Broadstone Road, appeal in the second. Market leader Cantiam, will be popular having been placed in better company than this, He is though a notoriously hard ride, and doesn't win that often. Ansar the tope weight, hails from a yard to be feared at this meeting, and must go close, however he doesn't give me the impression that he is in the same sort of form, that he showed last term when nearly winning the Chester Cup. Instead, Mail Man who ran well over 2m4f at Tipperary last time, is preferred as he may be suited by shorter trip, he is the selection.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Mail Man
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Trip should suit, more than the 2m4f he tried last time out
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Grimshaw

6:10 G.P.T. Access Equipment (C&G) EBF Maiden
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Sights On Gold, from Dermot Weld's yard, and the Aiden O'Brien trained Kasparov are the two who should battle out race three. Although Sights On Gold showed promise when taking third behind Sholokhov on his debut at The Curragh 15 days ago, O'Brien's representative is preferred. He was no match for less-fancied stablemate Line Rider in a 6f event at Leopardstown, however he ran very green, and should step up considerably on that effort .... or that's my hope.
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Kasparov
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> He should improve considerably on his debut effort
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Splanc

6:50 G.P.T. Galway (QR) Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "LAST SEASON'S HORSES TO FOLLOW" FEATURE] --> Quadco
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Patriot Games, Topacio, Darialann, Izmir, Derravarra Sunset, Ezbek, Fearsome Factor, Quadco, Goldenhalo, Great Guns, Hill Society, Wild Romance, Dr Torus, and Just Wondering, stand up most in race four. I'll take a chance with Izmir, who is in good form over hurdles [he's won his latest two starts] and is now 2lbs lower than when last in action on the Flat. He is preferred to likely favourite Patriot Games, Ezbek, and Hill Society,
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Izmir,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->Izmir is in good form over hurdles and is lower in the weighs than when last in action on the Flat
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Hill Society,

7:25 G.P.T. Van & Truck Rentals Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Whatever the fate of Sights of Gold earlier on the card, leading trainer at the meeting, Dermot Weld, have a great chance of taking this event with Daqtora. Daqtora was a promising third on her debut at Leopardstown. She then improved for the experience when beating Jimmy Jinks at Killarney. She can improve again on that experience, and can hopefully hold the challenges of Mise Rafturai, and Magzaa
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Daqtora
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] --> Hard to evaluate, but hopefully has improved again for the latest effort to take this prize
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Magzaa

8:00 G.P.T. Cork Handicap
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> If I'm honest, nothing stands out greatly in the next. Georgia Peach, Dilara, Marko Jadeo, Cabo Salinas, Leeside, Jumbo Romance, Lorli, Acorn Gold, Anonymity, Bocaccio, Kings Feature, Pet Shadow, Valshemon, A C Azure, and Drunken Wisdom, all make varying degrees of appeal. Patrick Flynn's charge, Marko Jadeo has been placed on his three most recent starts and only just failed to beat Dellsboy at Cork last time. He threatens to go one better, and should at the very least make the frame. Lorli is the most appealing eachway alternative
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Marko Jadeo,
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Lorli

8:35 G.P.T. Contractors Plant INH Flat Race
[±±"THE FURLONG POLE!!"±±]
[RUNNER [S] FROM OUR "#########" FEATURE] -->
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Kilcrea Shyan, from the Dermot Weld yard has a leading chance in the finale having been placed on both outings at Navan, however the Noel Meade-trained debutante Ringrooma attracts me being by Doyoun out of useful racemare Naevog. His connections clearly a career on the flat in mind for him, and if he has inherited any ability he could be very interesting here
[NØ.1 CHOICE] --> Ringrooma
[POSITIVES & NEGATIVES?] -->Ringrooma stands out for me on pedigree, and hails from a yard capable of getting them ready first time out
[E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Galway Breeze

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Gossamer (12/1), Proudwings (10/1), Meshaheer, Smirk, Silent Honor, Dubai Destination, Brave Burt, Cop My Gator, and Yorkshire, were winning selections for The Flatman, and The Rook at the meeting.

THE IRISH DERBY
Galileo won as expected, however Mordshi, and Pugin did us proud !!!

ROYAL ASCOT
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"

THE FLAT MAN
