THE Geoffrey Freer Stakes {gr.2} 2002 -

Analysis & Selections by

.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

NEWBURY
Saturday 17th August
¦ 1er. NEWBURY ¦¬>- 2:00 Stan James St Hugh's Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies) £22000 added, 2yo only fillies, 5f 34yds, penalty £13862, 9 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>-Speed Cop, Celestia, Topkamp, New Foundation, Royal Fashion and Wimple, make most appeal in the opener on Newbury's card. Speed Cop [ having run so well in the Molecomb Stakes (Group 3) last time out at Glorious Goodwood] and Topkamp [a winner of two of his four starts, most recently at Doncaster] set a fair standard here , however I liked the manner in which Celestia stayed on to land her maiden at Newmarket.... so much so that I'll be hoping that she'll improve enough to land this prize.
¦ 1er. CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>- Celestia,
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬>- Speed Cop,
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>- Topkamp,

¦ 2e. NEWBURY ¦¬>- 2:30 John Smith's Sprint Championship [H' cap.] (Qualifier) £15000 added, 3yo plus, 5f 34yds, penalty £9778.80, 15 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Talbot Avenue, Proud Native, Little Edward, Maromito, Dancing Mystery, Salviati, Henry Hall, Sister In Law, Corridor Creeper and Whistler, are likely to head the market in the second race on the card. Those of you who regularly follow our selections will have noticed how frequently Sister in Law has figured amongst our selections. This three-year-old daughter of Distant Relative has had a good second season, winning twice - at Windsor in May and Chepstow in June. She had five quick starts and probably benefited for being given a break (whilst the stable came back from a quiet spell) when staying on stoutly to finish 1/2length behind Texas Gold here twelve days ago. That was only her seventh start and I'd like to think she is still capable of further improvement.... I'm hoping so as she is my selection to beat Proud Native, [his recent win in a claimer will have given him some confidence], Little Edward, [disappointing at Windsor earlier in the week] Maromito, [a winner at York in June, who was well behind Zuhair at goodwood] and Dancing Mystery, [not far behind the selection in that Newbury race]
¦ 1er. CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>- Sister In Law (FR)
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬>- Dancing Mystery
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>-Little Edward, [e/w]

¦ 3e. NEWBURY ¦¬>- 3:05 Stan James Hungerford Stakes (Group 3) £35000 added, 3yo plus, 7f, penalty £20300, 10 runners.

¦"THEY'RE OFF 2002" - are there any horses from "They're Off" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the flat season?¦:¬>- Ghannam (USA) and Gateman
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Reel Buddy, Ghannam, Umistim, Binary File, Steenberg, Gateman and Desert Alchemy, all have chances in an interesting renewal of this Group three event. There should be plenty of pace on here as i'm sure that Atavus will try and dictate matters from the front. On his day he is a good horse as he proved when winner at Newmarket earlier in the season - however I do believe he is vulnerable here and it wouldnt surprise if any of Reel Buddy, [a respectable third last time to Rock Of Gibraltar in the Sussex Stakes (Group 1)] Ghannam, [arguably unlucky not to land any of his last three races], Umistim, [a winner last time at Sandown], Binary File, [unbeaten last term though outclassed behind Keltos in the Prix du Muguet (Group 2) at Saint Cloud], Gateman, [Had too much weight in one of the handicaps at the Galway Festival, however he'd previous landed a Group race in Ireland] or Desert Alchemy, [a winner at Glorious Goodwood last time out] didn't prove too good here. Preference is for Ghannam here. This is a huge step up in grade, however each of his most recent runs suggests he is improving. [Arguably his second- from a poor draw - in the Britannia Stakes [H'cap] was his best effort. I think he's plenty short enough on what he's done, but it wouldnt surprise if he proves to be up to the task.
¦ 1er. CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>-Ghannam (USA)
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬>- Reel Buddy,
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>- Gateman, [e/w]

¦ 4e. NEWBURY ¦¬>- 3:35 Stan James Rated Stakes [H' cap.] £16000 added, 3yo plus, 7f, penalty £10546.72, 16 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Golden Spectrum, Mubaah, Inchdura, Digital, Impeller, Barking Mad, Takes Tutu, Love You Too, Taranaki, What-A-Dancer and Definite Guest, appeal in an open handicap. .Takes Tutu, makes plenty of appeal here. You can ignore his run last week on ground that was too soft for him. He should bounce off of this surface and judged on his win at Goodwood at the beginning of the month our old friend Takes Tutu, appears to be a very solid eachway bet. I am going to oppose him though with Mubaah. He ran rather better than the bare form may suggest behind Takes Tutu in that Goodwood race having came from a long way back, to eventually only finished 3lengths behind the winner. This was his first attempt at this trip, having previously been campaigned over sprint distances. He is open to improvement, and given the run of the race, could nick this prize
¦ 1er. CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>- Mubaah.
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬>- Takes Tutu (USA), [e/w]
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>- Love You Too,

¦ 5e. NEWBURY ¦¬>- 4:10 Stan James Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Group 2) £65000 added, 3yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £37700, 7 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Mubtaker, High Pitched, Daliapour, Warrsan, Maniatis, Murghem, and Persian Punch. arguably have chances of sorts in the second Group race on the card. Mubtaker looked set for a winning reappearance when he went a length and a half or so clear in the Princess of Wales's UAE Equestrian And Racing Federation Stakes (Group 2) at the July Meeting, but his lack of a previous run found him out up the hill, and Millenary was able to out battle him close home. The form of that race is working out well, with Yavana's Pace and Millenary both running well in Germany last weekend, and he looks to be hard to beat - with only Daliapour and High Pitched making any real appeal. Both of these should appreciate the early pace assured by the presence of Murghem, and Persian Punch, and under these conditions they could expose any fractures in the likely favourite's armoury. I suspect that these two possess superior stamina and if the race pans out as appears likely it wouldnt surprise me if one/both of them didn't beat him - preference is for course and distance winner High Pitched.
¦ 1er. CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>- High Pitched,
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬>- Daliapour,
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>- Mubtaker (USA),

¦ 6e. NEWBURY ¦¬>- 4:45 Stan James EBF Maiden Stakes £8000 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £6136, 12 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Almutasader, Blazing Thunder, High Diving, Al Jadeed, Count Walewski, South Atlantic, Cara Fantasy The Varlet and Tyranny make most appeal in this maiden event. Al Jadeed, third to Washeeq at Goodwood last time out sets a fair standard and I suppose the fact that Richard Hills has chosen him instead of Group-1 entrant Almutasader is possibly a tip in itself, however Derby entrant South Atlantic, [who shaped with promise on his debut at Sandown behind eventual winner Royal Dignitary] is preferred. Almutasader, Blazing Thunder, High Diving and Tyranny make most appeal of the newcomers
¦ 1er. CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>- South Atlantic,
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬>- Tyranny
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>- Almutasader,

¦ 7e. NEWBURY ¦¬>- 5:15 Stan James H' cap £12000 added, 3yo only, 1m 2f 6yds, penalty £8073.60, 8 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Shafeeq, [who beat Adjawar at Kempton], Waverley, [a good second to Dawn Invasion in a competitive handicap at Glorious Goodwood]; Ashkelon, [Fifth start, plenty of improvement to come from him this term ], Tertullian and Imbibing, [closely matched on his recent start at Goodwood], Voucher, [a pontefract winner in July] and Tramantano [placed on all his three starts, most recent behind Derwent at Pontefract] are the horses to concentrate on in teh finale. Waverley is taken to give Hughie Morrison another winner.
¦ 1er. CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>- Waverley (IRE)
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬>- Shafeeq (FR)
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>- Tramantano, [e/w]

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.

Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
