Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.
Whether it be
"the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Chin Chin, Looking Down, Aries, Iloveturtle, Lucayan Dancer, Tiber Tiger, Rebate, Yeoman Lad and Fellow Ship appeal as the likeliest winners of the opener on the final day of Glorious Goodwood. This appears to be a particularly open affair, however, I'll be brave and side with Iloveturtle (a beaten favourite at Ayr last time out). Connections are in excellent form this week and he would not be running here unless they believed he could get competitive. He should offer a little more in the way of value than recent Ripon winner Chin Chin, Lucayan Dancer and Looking Down who should all give good accounts of themselves. I also wouldn't be surprised if the step-up in trip brings about further improvement in Aries, another runner who I believe could go well at each-way odds.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>L'Oiseau d'Argent, Flat Spin, Trojan Princess, Al Moughazel and Where Or When all have chances in the 2nd race of the card. Where Or When should find this far easier than when being put squarely in his place by Rock Of Gibraltar in the St James's Palace Stakes. I don't though believe that this form will be good enough to see off L'Oiseau D'Argent if this talented individual runs to form. He is very headstrong which is a worry, however he has the class to get away with this as long as it isn't overdone. In this type of company, I would rather be on his side than against him.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Quarter Moon, Islington, Fallen Star, Tarfshi, Golden Silca, Red Rioja and Sulk are my "preferred" in this Group 1 event. A difficult call for punters in my view as there has to be questions raised about the form of the current paper favourites Quarter Moon and Islington. There is no doubt that these are top-class fillies, however, Islington was extremely disappointing in The Oaks, weakening tamely from 2 furlongs out eventually finishing 19 lengths behind the eventual winner, Kazzia. Whilst this was happening, Quarter Moon tried her damnest to close on
Godolphin's filly but was always being held by that runner in the final furlong. Many expected her to get that illusive Group 1 success in the Irish equivalent of the Oaks 20 days ago. Taking a fierce tug early on, she came with what appeared to be a winning run 2 furlongs out. Unfortunately, Margarula hadn't read the script and belied her 33/1 odds to get up close home. There is no doubt that these two are the best fillies in this lineup, however, they have both endured hard races in their last couple of starts. You'd be fearful that this may finally begin taking it's toll. If they ran to form, I think over this trip Islington may nick the prize, however, Fallen Star (who showed an electrifying turn of pace to win at Ascot) and Tarfshi (who plugged on gallantly to win a Group 2 event at The Curragh just over a month ago) possess the ability to take advantage of their rival's deficiencies. Fallen Star each-way is
offered as my preferred choice.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Border Subject, Hurricane Floyd, Trace Clip, Mr Toad, Halmahera, Doctor Spin, Tayif, Awake and Undeterred are likely to head the market in a typically open renewal of the Steward's Cup. The current favourite is Border Subject who appears to have been transformed since connections have brought him back in trip. Two wins at Newmarket and Windsor were subsequently followed by an excellent in the Wokingham Stakes in the Royal Meeting where he beat all bar
Capricho. A repeat of that effort will see him going close here, however, in such a big field it is probably unwise to adopt such a blinkered view. He is a front runner, one of several in this lineup and my knowledge on his rivals allows me to conclude that: a) There is a very good chance of him being taken on all the way on both sides of the track and; b) more worryingly, the likely strong pace is almost certainly going to suit the hold-up horses (assuming of course they can get some luck in running). Here are my selections plus why I've selected them:
(1) Awake - Although he disappointed last time out at Ascot, I thought he was particularly impressive when landing a valuable handicap at The Curragh a week earlier. He is drawn standside which might be a disadvantage, however there is plenty of pace on this side I hope he'll go fairly close here;
2) Tom Tun
- Another who has been in excellent form this term and has also won a decent prize in Ireland. He is drawn on the same side as Border Subject
and could go well from this unfavoured draw.
3) Mr Toad - This fairly decent juvenile from last season has only had the one start when finishing a fair 2nd at Chepstow three weeks ago. The stronger the pace this side, the better his chances given luck in running and I'd be hopeful of him getting into the 1st four.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Scott's View, Overstrand, Seaborne, Robe Chinoise, Titchfield and Hawkwind all have chances in the fifth race on the card. Scott's View is guaranteed to be a popular choice here. Anybody who saw him outstay stable companion
Darasim here earlier in the week will believe he is capable of doubling-up here. A word of caution - although he has been put up only 3lbs for that success, he will actually find carrying
tomorrow's weight (9st 8lbs) more difficult to carry than the 7st 13lbs he carried to success on Tuesday. Overstrand, a winner at Bath 28 days ago and bottom-weight Hawkwind (an unexposed 3-year-old who is improving with each start) may have the scope to take advantage although it may be later on in the season before this prediction is fulfilled.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Strathclyde, Fire Up The Band, Zargus, Bryano De Bergerac, Hufflepuff, Coffee Time and Dubaian Gift all have claims in the penultimate race of the meeting. Zargus and Fire Up The Band renew rivalry having finished 1st and 2nd on their most recent start in a valuable handicap at the Royal Meeting. Both of these should go well again today, however Hufflepuff (who returned to form at Bath last time out) is just preferred. Bryano De Bergerac ran one of the best races so far his career when finishing 2nd at Sandown 9 days ago. A reproduction of that effort could enable him to make the frame at a nice price.

likeliest winners of day four of the meeting. The progressive Lingo [winner of three of last five starts, most recently when winning at Epsom at the beginning of June] and Chorist, [another multiple winner this time - also having the same record as Lingo; her most recent win was at Newmarket two weeks ago] make plenty of appeal, howevr both of these must give weight to Mount Street , a half-sister to Golan, who may have only been a workmanlike winner of her maiden at Newmarket last time out, howevr she is the
least exposed of these and could possibly be still open to more improvement .. [she will need to improve to land this prize]. She gets my

claims of Nayyir here, especially after his excellent fourth to No Excuse Needed in
the Queen Anne Stakes (Group 2) at the Royal Meeting. He safely holds Atavus and Priors Lodge on that form, and is
sure to go close. I prefer Millenium Dragon, who was in good form at the beginning of the season. He ran far better than the form figures
initially indicate last time in the July Cup (Group 1).running on late on the outside having been outpaced early on. This is his trip and
assuming he can get a decent run should not be too far way.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> A fiercely competitive renewal of the William Hill Mile. With there being a couple of horse
in the race who like to make the running, the race should be run to suit Demonstrate, Calcutta Scotty's Future, Judicious, Smirk, Finished Article, Dumaran, Omaha City, Faithful Warrior, and Millennium Force - my "preferred declarations". Demonstrate makes a quick reappearance after "winning" his race of the far side group of the course in the Tote International Stakes at Ascot of Saturday. Considering he was racing from a mark 9lbs higher than when successful over that course and distance at the Royal Meeting. if he has taken this race, he is
certainly to make a bold bid here. I'd definitely have a saver on him, however the
well- handicapped Faithful Warrior [who ran on well behind stablemate Calcutta at Newbury last time out], and
Judicious, [frustrating when with Geoff Wragg, but may have appreciated a change of
environment if judged on his recent win at Yarmouth} make most appeal at eachway odds. Faithful Warrior is the hopeful

earlier in the week should again go well here. I'm tempted to take a chance with The Whistling Teal, unproven at the trip and not seen since
finishing fourth in the Gordon Richards Stakes (Group 3). He improved throughout the
second half of last term, and has an attitude to racing which I like when having a wager. The
indifferent form of the yard is a worry, therefore the market may prove to be the best indicator to his

Litewska, Magic Piper, Mullion, Roman Mistress and Fleetwood Bay, make most appeal in a trappy 2-Y-O Handicap. After stablemate
Judhoor's easy win yesterday, you'd imagine that topweight Fancy Lady, [who beat Judhoor on her previous start at Newmarket] will be strongly supported here. Despite conceding weight all around, she makes plenty of

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>A particularly open and competitive 7f handicap begins Day 3 of the meeting. Wixoe Express, Pablo, Green Line, Freya's Dream, Mubaah, My Raggedy Man, Takes Tutu, Grey Pearl, Bon Marche, Hallion and Jonny Ebeneezer all in my view have chances of sorts here. Not convinced this isn't a race to take an early price on - well, not until it is confirmed whether Wixoe Express (so disappointing last night at Kempton) is declared to run. He had been in good form of late winning easily at Lingfield and most recently at Nottingham and despite yesterday's poor effort would warrant close inspection in this competitive race. With the likes of Pablo (a winner of his last 2 starts, most recently at Sandown at the beginning of last month), Green Line (very disappointing last time at Newmarket, but is clearly better than that - his previous run at Royal Ascot backs up this view) and my friend Takes Tutu (who continues to run well in defeat - he put up another fair effort here earlier in the meeting). In this lineup, to be honest, pinning my hopes on one individual has proven to be too difficult. Given the current conditions, I believe Pablo is the safest option as he has probably most open to improvement in this lineup and more importantly is proven to act on the ground. If Wixoe Express ran, I wouldn't be surprised if he were placed, however on what I saw last night either something was wrong or he'd done enough for the time being...the consistent Takes Tutu warrants each-way support as might Green Line and outsider Jonny Ebeneezer who I thought ran really well behind Commanding at Ascot last weekend.

After a relatively quiet start, our horses to follow feature on the flat "They're Off" has begun bearing fruit and amongst the most recent winners is Sir Edwin Landseer who renews rivalry with several of these runners who met in Newbury's big 2-year-old sales race last time out. On that occasion, Presto Vento raced virtually alone on the stands side, eventually winning by 2 1/2 lengths from Wunders Dream with "our horse" a short head back in 3rd, having forfeited ground by going across to the far-side group. He meets Wunders Dream and Presto Vento on far better terms than that occasion here and though I wouldn't take for granted a reversal in form, I am very hopeful (especially with the likes of Presto Vento and Floppie Disk almost certain to set him a strong pace) that Sir Edward Landseer will come out on top today. I do believe that Wunders Dream, Presto Vento and Folio (the comfortable winner of his last 2 starts) are his main dangers.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> I think you can make a case for all the runners in the Goodwood Cup. There is bound to be a strong pace as And Beyond, Double Honour, Charley Bates and last year's winner Persian Punch all like to force the issue. There probably won't be a dry eye in the house if Persian Punch were to land this prize, however he does strike me as being a horse who's better when allowed to control the last 3/4 of a race. He doesn't be mind being taken on early, however he does in my view resent constant pressure. The sentimental in me hopes he wins - the realist in me says "not likely" on the evidence of his efforts this term. Who do I think will win? I'm torn between the class of horses like And Beyond (a game winner at Chantilly at the end of June), Double Honour (2nd in this race last year and extremely impressive at Hamburg last time out, powering home in the mud to win by 16 lengths) or Hatha Anna (an excellent 4th in this year's Gold Cup, finishing in front of Give Notice, Persian Punch, Jardine's Lookout and Bosham Mill who all re-oppose) or do I forgive Give Notice that effort and judge him on his win previously in the
Sagaro Stakes (where he finished in front of Persian Punch and Double Honour) or handicappers Bangalore (game winner of the Northumberland Plate) or Cover Up (winner of the Queen Alexander Stakes at the Royal meeting). If Double Honour is given as an aggressive ride as he was last time, I think he would be very difficult to beat here. ¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>The second race on the card throws together ten aggressive
juveniles, several of whom we will no doubt be hearing of over the next 18 months or so. Of these Hilbre Island, Silver Seeker, Summerland, Bourbonnais, Dublin, Norse Dancer, Tizzy May, Newfoundland and Sarayat all have chances of sorts, however, three stand out in my view - Bourbonnais (who bolted up on his racecourse debut at York), Dublin (who showed a nice turn of pace to beat Mark Of Zorro at Newbury) and Summerland (probably the most backward of the three, who arguably created the best impression when winning a minor maiden at Haydock). So competitive is this race that it's quite conceivable that I could have easily left out the winning selection here. However, the bed's been made and I'll stick with it. I'd take a chance with Summerland to prove my initial impression to be correct.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>An extremely poor turnout for this Group 1 prize. A pity as several trainers have clearly "bottled" the issue of taking on Godolphin and Ballydoyle here. Rock of Gibraltar the winner of the English and Irish 2000 Guineas (plus on his most recent start the St James's Palace Stakes) is bound to go off favourite here, however as was pointed out today, as good a horse as he clearly is the fact remains that in his last 3 races, he has only beaten 16 other opponents so whilst he clearly is one of the better 3-year-old milers around he is no guarantee to beat the older generation here. What I find even more fascinating is that the connections of Noverre, No Excuse Needed and Reel Buddy have not seen fit to place their own pace-setter in this race - thus
maximizing their own chances of victory. Noverre in particular will require a strong a pace as is possible to be effective so arguably unless (for some strange reason) Aidan O'Brien decides to set a strong pace to suit him you can argue that Noverre may be up against it here. If Rock Of Gibraltar is to get turned over here, it'll either be by Queen Anne Stakes winner No Excuse Needed...or stablemate Shoal Creek residing around the 33/1 mark. We know he has an abundance of stamina. More interestingly we also know he likes to "lay handy". I think he is in the race to ensure pace, particularly if Sahara Desert fails to do the job and as he proved on his latest start in only just being beaten by Rebelline he is more than capable of sustaining a strong gallop for a mile plus. If Rock Of Gibraltar is as good as he appears, he should oblige. He gets the vote. No Excuse Needed and Shoal Creek cover all the other most likely scenarios.

Honor Rouge (the winner of his 3 starts this season, most recently at Haydock) and Sentinel (the winner of his last 4 races, most recently at Salisbury) are guaranteed to attract significant market support here. However both of these have to concede at least 10lbs to Imtihan (a progressive individual who improved on his 2nd to Sentinel at Salisbury by beating Fortune Island over this trip at Ripon 23 days ago. Although I was impressed with Mamounia last time out (when she obliged at Newmarket) I am prepared to give Helloimustbegoing the benefit of the doubt after a disappointing run at Newbury last time out. She is better judged on her smooth win at Newmarket on her seasonal appearance and she is taken to give Ed Dunlop a welcome winner here. Baron's Pit , The Bonus King [a head behind Baron's Pit in that race] and Fatik [an

[disappointing in our Derby having ran away with the Lingfield Derby Trial] have the form in the book to land this prize, however, in Supremacy and Izdiham, they meet two improving rivals who could be
capable of lowering their colours. My preference is for Izdiham, who beat older rivals Hawkeye and Cape Town over 1m-2f at

a horse, however Reviewer's move to Hughie Morrison, has already twice borne fruit winning twice this month, most recently when beating Wait for the Will at Ascot (who has won since). Off of only 7-13, I wouldnt be
