  "GLORIOUS GOODWOOD"
 [The Featured Meeting]

Analysis & Selections by

"a rØøk"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

"GLORIOUS GOODWOOD"
Saturday, August 2
¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"First¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 2.00 Vodafone European Breeders Fund, [E.B.F.] Fillies` Stakes (A) (Registered As The Gladness Stakes) (Listed Race) 11 runners 1Mile~6f Penalty £20300 3-Year-Olds plus fillies
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»--The final day of Glorious Goodwood opens with a Listed event for fillies and mares only. Of the eleven declared runners, Approach, Treble Heights, Discreet Brief, Prompt Payment, Flying Wanda, Allergy and April Stock appear to be the likeliest to prevail. If you ignore Prompt Payment's disappointing effort behind Place Rouge in the Lancashire Oaks last time out, she would have a solid chance here and probably represents the best each-way value of the race. However, Approach (who drops in class having run well behind High Praise last time out at St Cloud) appears to have an outstanding chance here, especially if she appreciates stepping up to 14 furlongs - a trip she has appeared to be crying out for all season. She gets my vote.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Approach
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Prompt Payment (e/w)
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Treble Heights

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Second¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 2.30 Vodafone Thoroughbred Stakes (A) (Listed Race) 12 runners 1Mile~ Penalty £20300 3-Year-Olds only
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»--Another trappy Listed event, this time for the colts over a mile. Laidlow, Al Turf, Court Masterpiece, Hurricane Alan and Royal Dignitary would appear to have the strongest credentials. In a trappy heat, Laidlow is preferred. He is the least exposed of these runners and didn't run too badly last time when finishing 4th to Trade Fair (beaten 4 lengths). He appears to be one of a select few who is still on an upward curve and hopefully he will improve enough to land the spoils here. Hurricane Alan (who ran well earlier in the week) and Excelsius (dropping in trip after apparently failing to stay here last time out) look likeliest to follow him home.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Laidlow (USA)
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Hurricane Alan
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Excelsius

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Third¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 3.05 Vodafone Nassau Stakes (A) (Group 1) 8 runners 1Mile~1f 192yds Penalty £116000 3-Year-Olds plus fillies
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- A fantastic renewal of this Group 1 event with all eyes likeliest to be focusing on Russian Rhythm and her first attempt to win a race above a mile. Her form is without reproach and most doubters who question the value of her form shown when winning the 1000 Guineas were surely silenced when she ran away with the Coronation Stakes at the Royal Meeting. This is however another day and one of the most fascinating aspects of this race would seem to be the lack of any guaranteed pace in the race. It seems odd that the connections of Ana Marie, Macadamia, Place Rouge, Zee Zee Top, Cassis, Geminiani and Hi Dubai have not seen fit to put a pacemaker in the lineup, especially when this would almost certainly increase their chances of success. Some of the edge has therefore been taken off this race and if I was to play here, I might be tempted to play and have a little wager on Anna Marie, mainly because you could argue that her 5th to Ange Gabrielle last time out at St Cloud is one of the strongest bits of form in the race. If she is offered at double figures, I think that she is a particularly good option. At the moment, if I were to have a bet on this race, I would have an each-way bet on here.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Anna-Marie (FR) (e/w)
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Russian Rhythm (USA)
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Hi Dubai

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Fourth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 3.40 STEWARDS` CUP (H`cap) - sponsored by Vodafone (B) 30 runners 6f Penalty £58000 3-Year-Olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- Thirty runners have been declared for the Steward's Cup and to be frank so many options present themselves that I must say that I am finding it a very hard race to fathom. Personally, looking at how the draw has worked out, you'd think that the highly drawn horses Patavellian (drawn 27), Fair Jag (22), Fire Up The Band (29) and Good Girl (25) seem likeliest to score on that side of the race whilst Mutawaqed (12) ,Bombed Becks (6), Budelli (14) and Frizzante (3) seem best of those drawn high. It's very difficult to get away from Patavellian on a course who's contours plays to his strengths (his early blinding pace). However, I am suspicious that the handicapper may finally just be getting his measure and I'd be inclined to take a chance on either Mutawaqed (who easily landed a competitive handicap at Newcastle last time) of Frizzante ( a relatively unexposed 4-year-old who is unbeaten this season). Both of these two appear to have been laid out for the race, however the unknown potential of Frizzante makes marginally more appeal.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Frizzante (e/w)
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Mutawaqed
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Patavellian
¦ 4th Place? ¦:¬»--Bombed Becks

¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- Kalaman, Trade Fair, Moon Ballad, Zafeen, Where Or When, Norse Dancer, and Statue Of Liberty are the likeliest winners of the Sussex Stakes. Its guaranteed to be strongly run with Moon Ballard almost certainly likely to attempt to make all here, whilst his main rivals will no doubt be attempting to outfox each other by timing each of their challenges as decisively as possible... Assuming that Spartacus and Blatant aren't in the race as spoilers, you could imagine Moon Ballard running well here, however I opposed Kalaman as Royal Ascot because of his immaturity but stated beforehand that he is the horse to follow as he looked the type that should progress with each experience during the remainder of the season. That comment was illustrated as he got into trouble during the running of the St. James Palace Stakes before running on strongly up the final straight to finish second to Zafeen [btn. 1length]. I'd be quite hopeful that he could turn around placings and he is preferred to Trade Fair, [who was really impressive last time out in Group 3 company at Newmarket]. Moon Ballad and Statue Of Liberty, [a top class juvenile, who has a chance if replicating that form] make the most appeal for eachway support.

DEDICATION

FURLONG TO GO would like to convey our condolences to the rook, whose father, George Edward Robertson passed away on 16th April 2003.

Mr. Robertson nurtured the rook's enthusiasm for this sport, and it was this inspiration, which is probably behind the creation of this website. As a permanent tribute to his memory, all the meetings covered under the "feature Meeting" banner will be dedicated to him... "Big George".

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within 1/2Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
Surbiton obliged at 16/1.

KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30

THE DERBY 2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
