Gran Premio Di Milano {gr.1} -

Analysis & Selections by
.i.l. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

MILANO

¦ 1° MILANO ¦ ¬> 15.00 - Premio Primi Passi {Gr.3} E 90.860 - Mt. 1200 - P. Dritta - TRIO
1 Checkit 56kg
2 Golden Danetime 56kg
3 Golden Devious 56kg
4 Golden Jade 56kg
5 King Storm 56kg
6 Le Vie Dei Colori 56kg
7 Liri 56kg

¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> A fascinating clash opens the card at Milano today. Mick Channon's Checkit who has won two of his three starts this term at Pontefract and Nottingham, takes on some useful Italian juveniles. Of these, I like the claims of Golden Danetime [winner of his last two starts], Le Vie Dei Colori, [unbeaten so far in three starts], and Liri, [who won impressively here at the end of May. I'm sure Checkit will go close, however I've seen a couple of Le Vie Dei Colori's starts and it wouldnt surprise me if he maintained his unbeaten record.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Le Vie Dei Colori
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Liri
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Checkit

¦ 2° MILANO ¦ ¬> 15.30 - Premio Coppa D'oro Di Milano - HandicapLIM E 77.000 - Mt. 3000 - P. Grande - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> The second on the card is a staying handicap. Kanaris, who had the misfortune to come up against Narrative here in the Premio Carlo d' Alessio {Gr. 2} last time out, must concede weight to some useful rivals including Monsieur Dollar, [who has won his last two starts], Pay My Dream [a winner of two of his last three starts, who last time out finished second to Fascino - who finished 1¼lengths behind Kanaris in the Premio Carlo d' Alessio], Fluxius, [second on his last four starts]; Salass, [a winner here over 2400 Mt. on his latest start], Czar, [who ran well here behind Albano three weeks ago], Sopran Montanelli, [the mount of Frankie Dettori, who finished behind Monsieur Dollar , two runs ago] and Hopes Are High, [the winner of his last two races, most recently here over 2800 Mt. at the end of April]. There is very little public form at this distance, and Monsieur Dollar's who seems to have improved sh he is stepped up in trip is just preferred.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Monsieur Dollar
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Kanaris
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Sopran Montanelli,

¦ 3° MILANO ¦ ¬> 16.00 - Premio Bersaglio - HandicapLIM E 77.000 - Mt. 1200 - P. Dritta - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> A six furlong handicap is the third race on the card. Cameron [8th behind Oh Bej Oh Bej in the Premio Certosa (Listed),] Indian Mary, [3rd behind Oh Bej Oh Bej in the Premio Tudini Piero E Ugo {Gr. 3} at Roma, with Dream Chief, Blu Carillon, Capitan Blood, Sopran Foldan and Development well behind], Chettengavere [a winner over course and distance at the beginning of June], and Golden Rudimentary [a winner over this trip at the end of May]. There wont be much to choose between several of these, however Blu Carillon does appear to be much better with Indian Mary than when they met in the Premio Tudini Piero E Ugo. As Indian Mary's form appears to be the most solid, Blu Carillon is worth chancing.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Blu Carillon, (a great eachway bet if you can get the right price)
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Indian Mary,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Cameron

¦ 4° MILANO ¦ ¬> 16.30 - D'Estate - L.R. E 77.000 - Mt. 1600 - P. Grande - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Race four is a listed race over a mile. Aggius, [a winner over 1600 Mt. at Roma at the end of May], Desenzano, Desert Plus, and Nordhal, [closely matched on recent meetings at Roma at the end of May], Polycar [beaten only 1 ½ lengths by Dupont in the Premio Parioli {Gr. 2} - The Italian 2000 Guineas], Rapid Tiger, [winner of two of his last three starts], and Schirokka [second to Gioia Infinita on her only start of the season at Roma] are the horses to concentrate on. Polycar' s form stands out here, and I'll be surprised if he doesn't return to winning ways here.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Polycar [U.S.A.]
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Nordhal,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Aggius,

¦ 5° MILANO ¦ ¬> 17.05 - Gran Premio Di Milano - {Gr.1} E 340.780 - Mt. 2400 - P. Grande - TRIO

¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>An intriguing clash of the generations comes next - here's a quick summary on each of the seven runners;
EINSTEIN - the winner of three of his last four starts, most recently, when winning a conditions race over 2400 Mt. here at the end of April. His only recent defeat was at the hands of Jeune Dream at Roma in March.
FALBRAV - Progressive four-year-old who has won his last three starts, on the last occasion beating Ekraar in the Premio Presidente Della Repubblica SIS {Gr. 1} (Colts & Fillies) (4yo+) in the middle of May.
HAWKEYE - Much travelled individual, who hasn't run since finishing fifth to Grandera in the Singapore Airlines International Cup {Gr. 1} - Hasn't won since winning the Desmond Stakes {Gr. 3} in August 2001.
JEUNE DREAM [U.S.A.] - A respectable 6th to the useful Rakti in the Derby Italiano {Gr. 1} at the end of May, Jeune Dream has returned to winning way when taking a Listed race here last weekend over 2000 Mt.
NARRATIVE - Very difficult to evaluate. He beat Grandera decisively when landing the Dubai City Of Gold {Gr. 3} at Nad El Sheba in February, but disappointed when finishing in the ruck behind Nayef in the Dubai Sheema Classic {Gr. 1} a month later. Made a triumphant return to Europe, when landing the Premio Carlo d' Alessio {Gr. 2} with consummate ease.
SABIANGO [GER] - Useful raider from Germany, who landed the Credit Suisse Private Banking Pokal {Gr. 1} at Köln last August (beating Boreal), before finishing third to Mordshi and Boreal in the UAE Grosser Preis von Baden {Gr. 1} on his last start in September 2001.
SNETTERTON - Well beaten by Narrative on his recent start, and needs to improve significantly to figure here.
¦ summary ¦:¬>Narrative and Sabiango will be very hard to beat here, however I was really impressed with Falbrav's victory in the Premio Presidente Della Repubblica, and I'd be tempted to take a chance with him.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Falbrav
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Sabiango [GER]
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Narrative

¦ 6° MILANO ¦ ¬> 17.45 - Premio Cassano D'adda - Disc. E 22.000 - Mt. 1600 - P. Grande - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Setmatt, [in good form at the end of last year]; Kerouac, [a winner over 1400 Mt. at March]; Mukaking, [placed on his last four start, most recently here, when finishing second to Mister Witch over 1600 Mt. here two weeks ago]; Uccellone [a winner over course and distance at the beginning of  June]; Trosos, [a winner over 1400 Mt. at Firenze four weeks ago]; Tesana, [who finished third to Mister Witch and Mukaking here two weeks ago], and Classic Sensation, [who finished third to Uccellone over his latest start], all have chances in this open handicap. At these weight Mukaking makes most appeal.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Mukaking,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Trosos,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Uccellone

¦ 7° MILANO ¦ ¬> 18.15 - Premio Mario Incisa-Ex.Legnano - {Gr.3} E 113.520 - Mt. 2400 - P. Grande - TRIO
1 Corsican Sunset 59½kg
2 Donasita 59½kg
3 Gintilgalla* 53½kg
4 Honorifique 59½kg
5 Kardthea 53kg
6 Landinium 53kg
7 Lobatica 53kg
8 Mugnaga 53kg
9 Musical Score 53kg
10 Strategic Tactics 59½kg
11 Witch Calderon 59½kg
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Donasita , [unbeaten in three starts in Germany, most recently when landing the Preis der Caracalla - Therme / Agl. III at Baden-Baden at the May]; Gintilgalla, and Mugnaga [who fought out the finish of the Premio Mario Perretti at Roma at the end of May]; Landinium, [who landed the Premio Baggio (Listed Race), here at the end of April]; and Witch Calderon , [the winner of his last two starts, most recently the Premio Nogara (handicapLIM) at the beginning of May] look best of those contesting race seven. Donasita looks to be the one to be on, and she is preferred to Landinium, and Gintilgalla,
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Donasita
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Landinium,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Gintilgalla,

¦ 8° MILANO ¦ ¬> 18.45 - Premio Trenno - H.P. E 55.000 - Mt. 1800 - P. Grande - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> An open handicap ends the card. Slaney Squire [the winner of three of his last four starts]; Golden Pirate, [a winner last time out over 1800 Mt. at  Firenze four weeks ago]; Rosso India, [placed on his last four starts]; Maggianito Boy, [who just failed to land a four-timer at Roma at the end of May]; Luna D'irlanda, [a good second on his last two starts, most recently behind Lingam over 2200 Mt. at Torino - with Podista, who reopposes back in sixth]; My Big Boy, [the winner of two of his last three starts, most recently over 1500 Mt. at Torino at the end of May]; Quando, [who disappointed on his most recent start here over 2800 Mt. here 11 days ago - he'd won his previous two starts] and Mister Witch , [who beat Mukaking, who pay him a huge compliment earlier on this card] make most appeal... Maggianito Boy is a hopeful choice
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Maggianito Boy,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Luna D'irlanda,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Slaney Squire

Success Stories

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.

Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
