- Whether it be "the
race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

On Sunday May
26, the most spectacular event of the french jumping season is held, the Grand Steeplechase de Paris. The course of 5,800 metres represents one of the longest distances run in France.
Which of this years line- up will join the past list of Greats. which
includes Katko, [ winner in 1988, 1989 and 1990], the legendary Al Capone II, winner in 1997, First Gold who won in 1998 and last years winner Kotkijet

Joly Précy ( a winner of his last two starts, most recently at Enghien ion April] and Atila de l'Orme look likeliest to fight out the opener on the card. I have a lot of respect for Royaleety, however Nickname (a full brother to useful hurdlers Narkis and Nom d'Une Pipe) showed plenty on potential on his debut and as the Prix Wild Monarch more often that not throws up a decent juvenile hurdler, i'll be hoping that he can add another victory to our new horses to follow listing

Russian Heart, (who won a steeplechase at Compiegne in April, after missing a year through injury), Satin Turk (who was in good form last term, but disapointed here in the Prix de la Republic last time out), old-timer Saint Quenin (a sprightly thirteen year old who won his last two starts at the end of 2001) and Jingle Rose (who had bits of form when trained by Phillip Hobbs who won a little race at Enghien at the beginning of May) look the best of these. I'm not sure about the jockey, however Saint Quenin should jump round here and is a hopeful choice

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬> Top juvenile hurdler Saint Des Saints goes for his sixth straight win in this Grade 3 hurdle. Guilliame Macaire's four year old have been frankly "magnifique" ... look at his recent performances;
25/11/2001 - Gives weight all round in landing the Prix Fifrelet (Hurdle) (Handicap)
10/03/2002 - wins the Prix Jacques d'Indy (Hurdle) (Grade 3) giving Cybergenic 7lbs (who reopposes here today) and beats him by 7lengths, with the hitherto "unbeatable" Kotkita well behind in fourth
01/04/2002 - wins the Prix de Pepinvast (Grade 3 Hurdle) easily giving Kotkita 5lbs, with Grand Match (receiving 9lbs) behind in third.
27/04/2002 - wins the Prix Amadou (Hurdle) (Grade 2) by 8 lengths (heavily eased on the run in- value for double the distance) - gives Great Love 7lbs into second place, with Grand Match (receives 10lbs) another length behind in third, with Cybergenic and Orphee Du Berlais well behind in fourth and fifth.
It will be a huge surprise if this star gets turned over - and he should take this without the minimum of fuss. Abyce, who won last time - has some useful bits of form over fences and may prove to be his main thereat here

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬> This has all the makings of a classic ... Hopefully Vic Toto will set out to make all here, as he did when attempting to make all in Prix Leon Rambaud (Hurdle) (Grade 2) . On that occasion I thought indecision by his pilot allowed Kimbi to pip him just on the line. On that occasion they met on level terms so the revised weights give Vic Toto an advantage I expect him to take full advantage of ..... will he manage to hold on to score? ... well Spanish Well has solid credentials and he capitalized on an error made by Martin Pipe's Galant Moss at the last when landing the Prix Jean Granel (Hurdle) here two weeks ago .. He will be staying on at the death and may make the frame .. however I think Vic Toto's main threat lies in the shape of Laveron - vastly improved since returning to France. This ex German Group winner easily landed his maiden here spread eagling a field in the Prix Hubert de Navailles (Hurdle) at the beginning of April. He then stepped up on this when landing the Grande Course de Haies de Printemps (Hurdle) (Handicap) here at the end of April. On that occasion, Laveron was handy throughout and quickened impressively when asked by Thierry Doumen between the last two obstacles. He has the speed to stalk Vic Toto, and despite giving him weight may well have the class to land this Grade 2 prize

This season's leading four-year-old hurdler also boasts some of th best form over fences .. I think he would have won this if he'd jumped round. In his absence Karly Flight, Vie de Reine, Korelo, La Zingarella, Malhado Island, Escort Boy, Kiléfou d'Airy and Le Chablis appear to have the best claims. Karly Flight who landed the Prix Jean Stern (Chase) (Grade 2) here from Vie de Reine (could reverse form here if given a more positive ride) in April probably boasts the best form, however I thought Kiléfou d'Airy (having his first race at Auteuil) caught the eye under a sympathetic ride. He has 14lengths to find in these two, but is probably better capable of improving and is a sporting wager here ....Escort Boy who looked special in landing three chases before disappointing in the Prix Fleuret (Grade 3) (Vie de Reine (2nd), Karly Flight, (3rd) finished in front of him) is overlooked at your peril

Defense Rests who won on his third start over hurdles here on 21 April 2002 may well off as favourite off of his lightweight, I question whether that form is as solid as that shown by Fils d'Ecosse, Isidore Ranson, and Sirius Parcs who finished second, third, and fourth to Laveron in the Grande Course de Haies de Printemps (Hurdle) (Handicap). they will be difficult to keep out of the frame. however I like Russian Shift here. He has been given three educational runs, improving with each run, coming sixth on his debut here in March, because staying on well to finish 3rd to Laveron over 3600m here at the beginning in April. On his most recent start in the Prix Arthur Veil-Picard (Hurdle) over 3500m, he again made late progress to get within two lengths of Defence Rests. ¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>The big race of the day ... and what a disappointing turn out!!! ... No Vieux Beaufai, Kotkijet, Ilare, Harmonie Trésor, Japhet, Douze Douze, Subehargues, Bipbap, Nousha, or Sunny Flight... such a pity ( and more evident of short-sighted (Martin Pipe and Lydia Taylor excluded) British and Irish trainers have been in overlooking races in france
Here are my thoughts on this year's line-up
N°. 1 - Djeddah (11-y-o), trained by F.Doumen 67 Kg
He ran respectably in this last year howevr looks safely held by El Paso on that run... recent form in England isn't good enough
N°. 2 - Double Car (6-y-o), trained by Bert.de Watrigant 67 Kg
Has been in good form this year having won the Grand Steeplechase de Pau at the beginning of the year. A good second here in the Prix Murat (Group 2) here last time out, at least has youth on his side - a strong contender
N°. 3 - Urga (11-y-o) , trained by G. Chaignon 67 Kg
This veteran is a model of consistency. Sixth in this event last year, and second to El Paso III in the Prix Haye Jousselin (Grade 1) last November. Ran a good trial for this when finishing third behind Vieux Beaufai, and El Paso Iii in the Prix Ingre (Chase) (Grade 3) here at the beginning of May... certain to give a good account himself here.
N°. 4 - Rougénoir (9-y-o), trained by R. E. Lecomte 67 Kg
Comes here in the form of his life having taken his last three starts, having landed the Prix Robert de Clermont-Tonnerre (Grade 3) (Chase) over 4300m at the beginning of March before pipping Double Car in the Prix Murat (Chase) (Grade 2) over 4500m at the beginning of April ... expect a bold bid.
N°. 5 - Fustrien du Paon (6-y-o) - trained by Å. Chaillé-Chaillé 67 Kg
A vastly improved individual who comes here having won five of his last six completed starts - admittedly in handicap company. He couldn't have been more impressive when landing the Prix Saint Sauveur (Chase) last time out here in April and may be open to more improvement
N°. 6 - Dukeen (7-y-o) - trained by G. Margogne 67 Kg
Dukeen was in good form this time last year, but hasn't shown anything to warrant support this season
N°. 7 - Eauberdier (10-y-o) - trained by G. Margogne 67 Kg
He was a respectable third to Batman Senora in the Prix William Head (Chase) last time out, however he'll need to improve to win this
N°. 8 - Hard Rock (7-y-o) , trained by Guy. Cherel 67 Kg
One of the best four year old chasers of 1999. He beat Kotkijet in the Prix Jean de la Rochefoucauld (Steeplechase) (Colts & Fillies), in July of that year before landing in September winning the Prix Edmond Barrachin (Chase) (Grade 3) from Hespoir D'Aurelie, with Bleu Superbe and Canadiane further behind. (shows how much the last two named have under achieved since coming to this country). He was having his first race for 30moths when finishing fourth in the Prix Hyeres III Chase here in April and after a poor effort in the Prix William Head here in April (possibly came too quickly) ran by far his best race when finishing third to Royal Bric in the Prix Quo Vadis (Chase), here at the beginning of May. This doesn't look to be good enough, but he is one of the few genuine class acts in this race and nothing would surprise me
N°. 9 - El Paso III (10-y-o) , trained by B. Secly 67 Kg
The Likely favourite here who finally won the Grade 1 chase he deserved when winning the Prix Haye Jousselin (Grade 1) (Chase) here in November. Ran the perfect trial for this when finishing a good second to Vieux Beaufai (giving 7lbs) in the Prix Ingre (Chase) (Grade 3) here three weeks ago .. will be difficult to beat.
N°. 10 - Ilians de Juilley (8-y-o) , trained by C. Diard 67 Kg
Has claims on his good third to Vieux Beaufai in the Prix Troytown (Chase) (Grade 3). however he hasn't won for two years and a place is probably more realistic
N°. 11 - Gadelier (8-y-o) , trained by N. Madamet 67 Kg
Is at least in form having finished a good second to Batman Senora in the Prix William Head (Chase) .. doesn't look to be good enough though.
N°. 12 - Chant Royal (10-y-o) , trained by M. de Montfort 67 Kg
A Pau specialist, who shouldn't be good enough on his most recent bits on form
N°. 13 Batman Senora (6-y-o) , trained by P. Rago 67 Kg
Gave weight all round when landing the Prix William Head (Chase) here at the beginning of May. Whilst he ran well in the Prix Ingre (Chase) (Grade 3) when finishing just behind Vieux Beaufai, El Paso III and Urga, he seems to need to improve again to score here
N°. 14 - Sun Storm
(5-y-o) , trained by Th. Civel 65 Kg
Useful at four but doesn't appear to have trained on very hard to fancy.
THE COURSE
Auteuil is a switchback course with a smaller inner circuit. The course consists of 23 fences and race over 5,800 metres of which most the imposing are the "Juge De Paix" and "Rivière des tribunes"
{1st Fence} - 1ÈRE HAIE - Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m.
This obstacle consists of synthetic brushwood and is very similar to the obstacles you'd see jumped at Worcester and Southwell.
{2nd Fence} - DOUBLE BARRIÈRE - Height 1.65m - Width 1.70m.
Experienced horses know that this obstacle (composed of privets framed by a barrier of three white bars with foam protection) is not very difficult to jump, however beginners/newcomers visitors tend to focus on the barrier, this give it plenty of height rather than brushing through the top of the privet.
{3rd Fence} - LE BULL FINCH - Height 1.70m - Width 3.20m.
This obstacle is similar to the Double Barriere - it is slightly higher and looks more imposing mainly because it is consists dark and densely constructed gorse.
{4th Fence} - L'OXER - Height 1.10m - Width 2.85m.
If the jockey anticipates the obstacle well, this double hedge of synthetic brushwood shouldn't present too many problems coming so early on in the race.
{5th Fence} - RIVIÈRE DES TRIBUNES - Height 1.00m - Width 5.50m.
the "Rivière Des Tribunes" is 5.50m broad, fronted by a 1.00m hedge. The horses and riders must cross it with a sufficient speed to carry out a jump of more than eight metres.... It isn't unusual for horses to crumple over on landing having had to stretch to make the landing side.
{6th Fence} - HAIE DU PAVILLON - Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m.
Obstacle whose characteristics are identical to N°. 1.
Passage on the interior track
{7th Fence} - HAIE DU TOURNANT D'AUTEUIL - Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m. Obstacle whose characteristics are identical to the N°. 1.
{8th Fence} - TALUS EN TERRE - Height 1.35m - Width 3.15m.
This obstacle consists of small brush hedge, slightly raised due to it's position on a mound. Horses tend to be at full stretch when jumping this and any serious error is guaranteed to ensure an exit.
{9th Fence} - LE BROOK - Height 0.80m - Width 3.25m.
One of the smallest fences on the course, however this obstacle has a tilted barrier overhanging a small stream and requires a jump of 4 meters to clear it.
{10th Fence} - GROS OPEN-DITCH - Height 1.50m - Width 3.70m.
The horses travel a distance of approximately 300m on the flat which enables them to pick up the speed necessary to approach this obstacle. Its double hedge of privets frames a hedge of natural heather, which gives a two-tone aspect to the Obstacle.
{11th Fence} - MUR DE PIERRES - Height 1.10m - Width 2.20m.
Although it is heavily protected, this stone wall must be crossed without making contact.
{12th Fence} - HAIE - Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m.
Obstacle whose characteristics are identical to N°. 1.
{13th Fence} - DOUBLE BARRIÈRE (2 ème passage) - Height 1.65m - Width 1.70m.
Obstacle already crossed (N°. 2), but approached this time from the left.
{14th Fence} - HAIE - Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m.
Obstacle whose characteristics are identical to N°. 1.
{15th Fence} - RIVIÈRE DES TRIBUNES (2ème passage) - Height 1.00m - Width 5.50m.
Obstacle already crossed (N°. 5). Horses have already jumped 14 obstacle by this stage, and as fatigue begins to set in, jumping this a second time round will catch out any who are beginning to falter.
{16th Fence} - HAIE DU PAVILLON - Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m.
Obstacle whose characteristics are identical to N°. 6.
The exterior track.
{17th Fence} - PETIT OPEN-DITCH - Height 1.30m - Width 3.15m.
Literally on the turn going onto the back straight at Auteuil, this obstacle is comprises three layers of synthetic heather preceded by a white barrier. Similar to the Canal Turn, horse and rider must approach the obstacle on a good stride to ensure that the obstacle is jumped correctly.
{18th Fence} - BUTTE EN TERRE - Length 42 m - Hedge in 0.80m - Hedge out 1.00m.
This "mound", framed by hedges of privets, is a straightforward obstacle but is capable of catching out tired horses.
{19th Fence} - JUGE DE PAIX - Height 1.60m - Width 4.10m.
After "Butte En Terre", the horse and rider confront "Juge De Paix" (Justice of the Peace) a Rail Ditch and Fence. To negotiate this, they must gallop 300m before approaching this obstacle which consists of a 2 metre wide ditch with a hedge of 1.60m high and 1.50m thick made of natural heather. The "Juge De Paix" is a very imposing obstacle and jockeys must ensure that their mounts gain enough propulsion to cross this 5-metre jump. It is a true test of horse and jockey and coming so late on in a race it requires considerable skill on the part of horse and jockey, hence it's nickname of "Justice of the Peace"
{20th Fence} - LE MOYEN (AN OPEN-DITCH)
- Height 1.40m - Width 3.70m.
Fatigue truly will have begun to have set in and yet there are two obstacles which can cause horse and rider difficulty. Le Moyen, a double hedge of privets and natural heather, which gives a two-tone aspect to the Obstacle. Having just jumped "Juge De Paix", horse and jockey must make another big effort to cross this open ditch.
{21st Fence} - HAIE (2 ème passage) Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m.
Obstacle already crossed (N°. 12)
{22nd Fence} - DOUBLE BARRIÈRE (3ème passage) Height 1.65m - Width 1.70m
Obstacle already jumped (N° 2 and
N°.13). Jumped from the left this time. Probably most difficult third time around. Plenty of tired horses have come a cropper here and it wouldn't be a big surprise if more did the same on Sunday.
{23rd Fence} - DERNIER HAIE Height 1.10m - Width 2.60m.
An obstacle who's characteristics are identical to N°. 1.
Just the run-in to go before victory is confirmed.
¦ SUMMARY ¦:¬>On the face of it, El Paso appears to have a straightforward task here, however he may not be as good as he was last year (admittedly he may not need to be).
