Analysis & Selections by
.l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r.
Whether it be
"the
race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics
and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Nine runners have been declared for the opener of French Champion Hurdle day. Of these; Royaleety,
(ridden by leading rider Cristophe Pieux), Nickname, Julius Honor, Do It, and Homme du Bourg make most appeal. Several of these renew rivalry, having met last time out in the Prix Gras Savoye Reassurance
(Haies) at the end of May. On that occasion, Nickname stayed on strongly up the straight to
beat Malcom by ½length, with Royaleety another 3lengths back in third. Azdine, (4th), Do It (5th), Atila De L'Orme (6th), and Black Honor all
finished well behind the principals. The weights are slightly revised here, but not enough for three
times winner Royaleety to revised placings with Nickname, who is a
confident selection. It wouldnt surprise me if these two didn't finish 1-2 ...possibly Julius Honor (who was beaten by Guilliame Macaire's juvenile Golden Flight here in the Prix Chateauvert (Haies) in
the middle of May), or Homme Du Bourg, (who improved on an encouraging fourth in the Prix Wild
Monarch (Haies), behind Nickname, to finish ¾lengths behind Alliance Francaise in
the Prix Rocking Chair (Haies) at the end of May), may get amongst these two

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>I'm not sure the second will take much winning. Jokary
(who won at La-Roche-Posay at the beginning of June), Sambolero (who ran once for Paul Nichols over
hurdles at Plumpton last term, who boasts respectable form - in the context of this race - most recently
when finishing third to Le Tastevin in the Prix Melinoir (Haies) at Auteuil at the end of
May), Kaducé (a winner at Pau at the beginning of February, who hasn't run since
finishing 9th at Mar. Borely), and Durruti (who has fallen on his last two starts at
Enghien-Soisy, who had earlier won over fences at Cagnes-Sur-Mer at the beginning of the
year) look best of these. Sambolero's recent racecourse experience may just prove to be
decisive

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>A competitive looking handicap comes next on
the card. Without doubt the most interesting runner is Puntal from Martin Pipe's yard,
who has rattled off a quick four timer already this term at Stratford, Worcester, Hereford and Southwell. Martin Pipe
clearly has Puntal in great heart for this assignment, however whilst there is no doubt he has improved since joining
Nicholashayne from France, it is worth pointing out that he did fail to score
there - although he ran some great races, for example when coming a respectable 7th in the Prix Andre Adele (Handicap Steeple Ch.) to Heros Collonges here in November,
or when finishing a good 5th (conceding weight all round) to Bipbap in the Prix World Citizen (Steeple Ch.) (5yo+) here in September. Go back another year and he has good form with the likes of Ilnamar and Ilare. I'm sure he'll go off as favourite, however he meets stiff
opposition from Levallois (whose been tuning up for this on the level, winning once at
Nancy), Brazil (second in his last two starts over hurdles, most recently when
finishing 2½lengths behind Oudry - who reopposes in the Prix Gras Savoye (Haies)
(Handicap)), the Grand Steeple Ch. Di Milano winner Ask My Why, (second last time out in
the Prix de Saint-Germain (Haies)), and Defense Rests (4th last time out in the Prix Wild
Risk (Haies)). I can see Puntal going very close here, however Brazil comes
across as the better percentage call.

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬> Top juvenile hurdler Saint Des Saints goes for
his seventh straight win in this Grade 1 hurdle. Guilliame Macaire's four- year- old continues to impress, as his recent
record demonstrates
- 25.11.2001 - Gives weight all round in landing the Prix Fifrelet (Haies) (Handicap)
- 10.03.2002 - wins the Prix Jacques d'Indy (Haies) {gr. 3}giving Cybergenic 7lbs (who reopposes here today) and beats him by 7lengths, with the hitherto "unbeatable" Kotkita well behind in fourth
- 01.04.2002 - wins the Prix de Pepinvast (Haies) easily giving Kotkita 5lbs, with Grand Match (receiving 9lbs) behind in third.
- 27.04.2002 - wins the Prix Amadou (Haies) {gr. 2} by 8 lengths (heavily eased on the run in- value for double the distance) - gives Great Love 7lbs into second place, with Grand Match (receives 10lbs) another length behind in third, with Cybergenic and Orphee Du Berlais well behind in fourth and fifth.
- 26.05.2002 - wins the Prix Sageris - Prix de Longchamp (Haies) {gr.
3} by 4 lengths - gives Great Love 4lbs who finished second , with Cybergenic Abyce, and Grand Match well behind.
It will be a huge surprise if Saint Des Saints gets turned over by Great Love, Cybergenic, Grand Match or Abyce - Karly Flight, who last time out landed the Gras Savoye - Prix Ferdinand Dufaure (Steeple Ch.) (Grade 1) is more interesting. I don't
believe she'll be good enough to beat Saint Des Saints, however she may be good enough to get into the money

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>French Gold Cup form gets tested for the first time here as
several who met in that Grade 1 Steeple Ch, line up for this Grade 2 prize. In the Grand
Steeple Ch. de Paris, El Paso III came out on top, finishing 6lengths behind the winner Double Car, with Batman Senora 3lengths
back in third, Rougénoir, another 5½lengths back in fifth, Fustrien Du Paon well back in ninth, and Djeddah
completely tailed off. On the face of things, you might expect those placings to be confirmed, however this race is over a significantly shorter trip, and to be honest El Paso III, has lost his heir of
invincibility. I think this gives Fustrien du Paon, (winner of his last five
starts, previous to the French Gold Cup, most recently the Prix Saint Sauveur (Steeple Ch.)
(Handicap)) and Rougénoir (winner of his previous three starts prior to that race, including winning the Prix Murat (Steeple Ch.)
{gr. 2}, beating both Double Car and Batman Senora) chances of reversing placings with both El Paso III, and Batman Senora... Fustrien du Paon is
a great eachway bet in my view, however Rougénoir is just preferred as the winning selection.

¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬> Martin Pipe not only has got an outstanding chance of lifting the Prix RTL (Prix Hardatit) Haies, with Puntal, but he
also has an even better chance of landing the Grande Haies D'Auteuil, Galant Moss,
completely transformed since returning to race in France. He was unlucky not to land the Prix Jean Granel (Haies) last time here over 4100 m 3½ weeks ago, when he made a bad mistake at the last, when still travelling well, allowing Spanish Wells to get past him on the run-in. Cristophe Pieux continues his association with Galant Moss, and having proven his ability to stay this trip (rarely run over in france) he has definite place claims. The race should be set up for him by Vic Toto, who could go well if he stays this extended trip and Kimbi,
(difficult to catch right, but decent on his day as he proved when landing the in Prix Leon Rambaud (Haies)
{gr. 2} earlier this year, beating Vic Toto). Galant Moss' main threat though is undoubtedly Laveron, vastly improved since returning to France. This ex German Group winner easily landed his maiden here spread eagling a field in the Prix Hubert de Navailles (Haies) at the beginning of April. He then stepped up on this when landing the Grande Course de Haies de Printemps (Haies) (Handicap) here at the end of April. On that occasion, Laveron was handy throughout and quickened impressively when asked by Thierry Doumen between the last two obstacles. On his last start, he stalked Vic Toto before quickening to land the Gras Savoye Hipcover - Prix La Barka Haies {gr.2} here over 4300m. Despite the absence of Barracouda, Magnus and Le Sauvignon, this isn't too bad a renewal,
ironically dominated by two horses who haven't shown anywhere near their
true ability when they raced in this country. I would love to see Galant Moss win this, however Laveron has looked top class of late and I have to
stay loyal to our "Horse to Follow".
