Analysis
& Selections by THE ROOK - Whether
it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs,
we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the
fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and
requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner
or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular
may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the
"ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is
the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS
- For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are
the likeliest winners; (¹

[t.h.e. r.o.o.k]:-:-->With the exemption of Bruthuinne, and Cruise The Fairway, who may be a little out of their depths, any of the other runners could take this. Cornish Gale has impressed this season over fences, and won with a bit in hand at Cheltenham last time out. He should go well as should Father McCarten, who stayed on strongly to beat Artic Jack by 3/4lengths at Ascot in November, as might Katarino a brilliant juvenile who hasn't shown that sort of form for a couple of seasons (reportedly has suffered from some
respiratory trouble). I wouldnt be too surprised if Mr Cool, and Innox fought this out. Former useful hurdler Mr Cool impressed when beating Ibal by 14lengths at Newton Abbot, and wont be far away, however I know that Francois Doumen holds Innox in high regard, proof of that was him taking on El Paso III in a Grade 1 chase at Auteuil. It was to early to say whether he would have won, but he certainly was travelling nicely when falling at the 6th. If he jumps round he could make these go, and I'll take a chance with him

Got One Too who made all over 2m3f last time out, will no doubt attempt to make all again, however the jockeys on Impek , and Fait Le Jojo will no doubt be assuring that he isn't given too much rope, as was the case last time out. That is quite feasible, however I'd be disapointed if Impek isn't able to give 10lbs to him, and I take him to score here.

[t.h.e. r.o.o.k]:-:-->First Gold, Teaatral, Spendid, Carlovent, Splendid Thyne, and Historic, make most appeal in the third. First Gold, arguably the best chaser seen in this country last term, hasn't been out since finishing a well beaten fifth behind Kotkijet in the Grand Steeple de Paris at Auteuil in May. It looks a disappointing effort on the face on it, however there isn't much doubt that the winner, [and second Ilare] are extremely useful, so he loses no cast here. He reportedly is straight for this effort and must go well and is guaranteed, [by virtue of Historic] to have the decent pace he required. Despite the presence of useful staying hurdler Teeatral, not seen out since finishing sixth behind Landing Light at Sandown in April, If he translates his chasse form over hurdles, First Gold
should win this. he isn't, however, much in the way of value, and I'd suggest Carlovent as an interesting alternative. He wasn't really put into the race when finishing fifth behind Majed at Chepstow last month, but had previously run really well behind Baracouda at the Whitbread Meeting at Sandown in April. As long as he doesn't forfeit too much ground with his jumping [my one concern], Carlovent, at the very least, should get into the frame.

[t.h.e. r.o.o.k]:-:-->This is an extremely hard race to call, not least because four of our horses to follow line up here. Irbee, Red Ark, Satchmo and Young Devereaux, look the only dangers to Cyfor Malta, Ilnamar, Goguenard, and Jolly Green Giant. Only Young Devereaux appeals however he hasn't raced for almost two years, but was a decent novice and whilst he'll go well, I wouldnt be too surprised if he comes on for the run.... So who do we think will win?..... Well if Goguenard is in the same frame of mind as he was when trouncing a field on Whitbread Gold Cup Day, then he could be very hard to beat. He appears to have plenty of weight here and i'll pass him over. Jolly Green Giant needs to bounce back after a poor effort at Aintree, but is capable of doing so.... It wont though surprise me if martin Pipe's pair Cyfor Malta, and Ilnamar, fought this out.
There are many pundits, and punters alike, who have written Cyfor Malta's epitaph, however that seems premature to me especially if you considering that for 2m4f of the Pillar Chase last January, Cyfor Malta looked like the horse that had conquered Aintree as a five year old. From the top of the hill, he stopped as if shot, and was heavily eased, literally trotting the final half mile of the race. The handicapper has given him a chance, and he was specifically put in my list because I thought he could take advantage of such a move, however I have always held Ilnamar in the highest regard. He was one of the best four year old chasers in France last year, and lost nothing in defeat behind Sleeping Night on once occasion. He was very impressive when winning over hurdles on his last start at Auteuil almost a year ago, and could be too good for these if fully straight for this first run. Like a few of these, I think he'll be better for the outing over British fences, however I hope his class will get him through

[are there any runners from "One to Jump" - our national hunt horses-to-follow feature?]:-:-->Ad Hoc, and Hindiana (FR),
[t.h.e. r.o.o.k]:-:--> 14 horses have been declared for the big race of the meeting, and as usual the race should be a true test. There is pace guaranteed as Bindaree, and Grey abbey likely to force the issue early. Non stayers will have no hiding place here. Ante-post favourite Montifault, the mount of Timmy Murphy, is likely to remain at the head of the market, especially as there are many punters who feel he simply needs to reproduce the form of his most recent start, where he won the Badger Beer Chase at Wincanton cosily. he has however gone up 17lbs for that win, and although he is still appears to be leniently treated, I'll not wholely convince that he's quite the good thing being suggested .... that however doesn't mean we wont select him!!!.
His main market rivals are likely to be the Martin Pipe-trained Take Control, who improved significantly once he got his jumping sorted. He ran creditably when 35lengths behind Gingembre in the Scottish National on his last start, but will be far fresher here, and more of a potent threat. Trainer Paul Nicholls has a very strong hand here as he also saddles Ad Hoc, the impressive winner of the Whitbread Gold Cup last term. I have been a fan of this horse since his days racing in point to points, and the sky's the limit may be an apt phrase to use about him this year ... he simply could be anything, and despite carry 11st 2lbs should be treated according. Ireland will be represented by Ted Walsh's Commanche Court, due to be ridden by the trainer's son Ruby. Like Ad
Hoc, it may be unwise to dismiss him simply because of the amount of weight he's carrying. This former winner of the Irish Grand National, has solid credentials in this time of event, and a 3
½length defeat by Lyreen Wonder at Navan in November, confirmed that he comes into the race in good heart... a big run can be expected
There aren't many of the others that I'd readily dismissed;
Behrajan was top class over hurdles, and an encouraging third behind Kingsmark on his reappearance; What's Up Boys in good form against novices last winter, but appears to have plenty to find with Ad Hoc on the Whitbread form (finished 19lengths behind in second place)... he is better off though at the weights here. Grey Abbey, whose win over Hugo De Grez at Ayr was given a boost by the runner-up at Carlisle on Thursday; Henrietta Knight's pair topweight Lord Noelie, who was still going well when falling behind Sackville in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby ... the best bit of form [arguably] on offer here, and Hati Roy who powered up the hill at Cheltenham to deny Beau in a thrilling finish on her latest outing. Finally Ferdy Murphy is another trainer with two strings to his bow, and clearly the stable is hopeful of big runs from both Hindiana and Streamstown judging by the comments in the press this week.
Montifault, will almost certainly go off favourite here, and there will be those prepared to take the 11/4 on offer...
especially as he is one of the more likely winners. However he is very unattractive at
current odds in by far his most competitive race over British fences... I'll leave him alone. I'm more
prepared to take a chance in opposing him and instead will go with
"Class, Potential and Stamina". The way the race is likely to be run, it is easy to imagine Commanche Court getting into the money, and he
shouldn't be too far away, however Ad Hoc, and Hindiana make even more appeal. I've already explained my thoughts
on Ad Hoc and if he gets into a rhythm I expect him to make the frame, (so he's my saver bet) however I do think Hindiana
isn't out of this.
He was only beaten 14 lengths by Foxchapel King in the James Nicholson Wine Merchant Champion Chase at Down Royal. his first start over fences since coming over from
France. You only need to look at his form when in the care of Francois
Doumen, where for example, he won the Prix la Perichole (Grade 3) (Chase), and then finished third behind Hespoir
D'Aurélie, and Subehargues - amongst the best 4-year-old chasers of their age group
(beaten 1 ¼ lengths) in the 1999 Prix Orcada (Grade 3) (Chase), to appreciate that Hindiana
could potentially be very useful over fences. It is a huge ask again of him, and his lack of
experience could find him out, however I think he is generously priced at
around 25/1 and I'm hopeful that he (and Ad Hoc) will acquit themselves creditably here.

Lurnardi trounced by Abbot (himself very disappointing last Saturday) two run runs ago, struggled to beat
Khaysar at Hereford ten days ago. The other runner with form, We’ll Make it looks a real pig of a horse, and whilst he clearly possesses
ability isn’t inclined to show it. Newcomers/ English debutantes Non So, Gold Standard, and Le Roi Miguel, look the ones to concentrate on. Gold Standard has little bits of form that entitle him to consideration although his recent form on the level isn’t encouraging (well
beaten by Riyadh last time out. Therefore Non So and Le Roi Miguel, may well battle this out. These two French imports have totally
different backgrounds, The former was a winner on the flat, and stayed extreme distances, whereas Le Roi Miguel has already shown promise having

Pride, who stayed on stoutly to win at Towcester over 3m1f last time out, mainly as he is probably capable of more improvement than most being only six… but he’s hardly a maximum bet!!!. Over The Water (if the ground doesn’t

[t.h.e. r.o.o.k]:-:--> The third is a typical staying novice hurdle at Newbury.
Fifteen line up, the openness of the market accuracy suggests that several have claims - of which Brockbuster, Box Builder, Pride of India, Native Peach, Billingsgate, Aiden, Zen, and
Secret Drinker head my shortlist. Native Peach arguably has some of the best public form having stayed on
well last time to finish a creditable third to Wemyss Quest at Cheltenham over 3m 1f in
October. He is guaranteed to see out this trip and is sure to go well. The same applies to Box Builder, who made all until being headed approaching the last, when
finishing second to Ashgar at Ludlow over 2m5f. Billingsgate last seen out, when a creditable third behind Looks Like Trouble in the 1999 Sun
Alliance Chase, is another one who wont be far away, however I don’t think that Pride Of India, will be far way if he transfer his flat form to hurdles. He was an out-and-out stayer when in the care of John
Dunlop, and was in good form at the beginning of last season, wining his first two starts. He held his form
(more or less) , and ran creditably last time out when staying on stoutly to
finish sixth behind Hugs Dancer at “Glorious Goodwood” over 2m5f in August. He may well need this, and is certain to come on for the
experience, however he may be good enough to "get away with it" first time out, and add to the list of winners from “One To Jump” our horses to follow feature.
For those looking for other contender for eachway money apart from possibly Billingsgate. Aiden who ran well behind Fasgo at Chepstow on his latest start, and Brockbuster, who showed plenty of
promise when second to Flame Creek at Wincanton in April make most appeal. Aiden, another out and out stayer is marginally preferred of these

unbeaten in three starts, and Southern Star - so impressive on his debut over fences at Bangor in Oct0ber, before unseating his rider at the 5th (the race was
subsequently won by Manx Magic). Frosty Canyon, Gentle Rivage and High Cotton also line up and deserve consideration, however on the evidence I've seen
thus far will need to improve to take this. Jumping will again determine this race, as Manx Magic's
nimbleness, and abundance of stamina could force Valley Henry, and Southern Star into making errors. Valley Henry has always
