IRISH DERBY 2001-

SELECTIONS - For each race, I have given you who, in my view, are the likeliest winners, as well as horses who could run well at eachway odds. 'R*ecommended' horses have, in our view, the best chances of success each day. Any horses from our 'Horses To Follow' list are shown at the foot of each race's analysis.

POSTING TIMES FOR SELECTIONS_ Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps

CURRAGH
Sunday 1st July
1:40 Richard H.Faught Memorial Stakes (Listed Race)
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~ Danehurst, who showed so much promise on her reappearance at Royal Ascot, when finishing ninth to Cassandra Go in the King's Stand Stakes is marginally preferred to Bishops Court (a selection of ours at Epsom last time) , and Ishiguru . Give A Whistle who won in a god time on its debut, could be an interesting e/w alternative
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~Danehurst,
" [e/w] Alternative" ~ Give A Whistle

2:15 Anheuser Busch Railway Stakes (Group 3)
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~Rock Of Gibraltar, rather unlucky in running in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, has a great of reversing placings with third placed Redback here.
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~Rock Of Gibraltar,
" [e/w] Alternative" ~ Hawk Wing,

2:45 John Roarty Memorial Scurry Handicap (Premier Handicap)
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~ The third looks very open; Mr Houdini, Social Harmony, D'Anjou, Avorado, Bonheur, Damalis, Tiger Royal, Blue Velvet, Conormara, Lethal Agenda, Jacks Estate, Newpark Lady, Willyever, Eveam, and Gotarapofahames, all appear to have chances on the book. Mr Houdini, [a winner last time, and open to plenty of improvement], and Social Harmony, [the class act, having won in Group company] will have their supporters, however d'Anjou, and Avorado, who met last time out at Leopardstown look the ones to concentrate on. d'Anjou who got the worse of the tussle that day, should appreciate the reduction in trip, and is just preferred
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~ d'Anjou
" [e/w] Alternative" ~ Avorado

3:30 Budweiser Irish Derby (Group 1)

Cashel Bay/ Luke Comer/ W J Smith
Dr Brendler/ J C Hayden/F M Berry
Exaltation/John M Oxx /L Dettori
Galileo/ A P O´Brien/M J Kinane
Golan /Sir Michael Stoute/K Fallon
Ice Dancer/A P O´Brien/P J Scallan
March King/ T Stack/P Shanahan
Morshdi/ M A Jarvis/P Robinson
Mr Combustible/ B W Hills/R Hills
Pebble Island /AP O´Brien /J A Heffernan
Pugin/ John M Oxx/N G McCullagh
Vinnie Roe/ D K Weld/P J Smullen

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~ Looking at the race objectively, (well in terms of the form book anyway), Galileo should oblige here, as he appears to safely hold those horses who took him in the Derby (Mr Combustible, and Golan ). There is no doubt that he was an impressive winner on the day and to be frank the steady early pace that day, played right into his hands .....if that is repeated here, it is unlikely that the placing will be reversed.

I would hope though, that though opponents, (and his other rivals here) don't gift him the prize . I don't think the connections of Golan intend to do so, and I can see why they are keen to have another stab, .... after all he definitely didn't have the run of that affair, and handled Epsom's undulations less well ... considering the downcast reports emanating from the yard about him going into the race, it wasn't that bad an effort, and I fully expect him to get much closer...

He isn't the selection though... I'll gamble on a healthy early pace, and expect one of Mordshi, (the impressive winner of the Italian Derby), Exaltation, (a respectable second to the favourite in the Derby trial), and Mr Combustible, (who will be far better suited to this track than Epsom) to make a bold bid for glory... I was impressed by the acceleration shown by Mordshi, and there offer him as a sporting wager to the mighty favourite... Golan, and Exaltation should fill the remaining places ... For a shock, Pugin -a late-maturing Irish St Leger type, should be staying on when others have cried enough... if one of the really big priced horses get into the frame it is likely to be this 0one
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~ Mordshi, (e/w)
" Alternative" ~ Galleileo
"LONG*SHOT!!" ~ Pugin

4:15 Arthur Guinness Handicap
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~Mist Of Magic, Patriot Games, Classic Note, Quadco, Cronin's Boy, Delphi, Francies Fancy, Hill Society, Keeping The Faith, King Of Peace, Rapid Deployment, Really Chuffed, and Shareef Khan, all have claims in an open handicap. Whilst he disapointed over hurdles, Quadco who has returned to something near his best form in his last couple of runs, is a hopeful choice over likely favourite Mist Of Magic,
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~ Quadco
" [e/w] Alternative" ~ Hill Society,

4:50 Budweiser Guinness Handicap (Premier Handicap)
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~ She's Our Mare who ran a great race last out when finishing sixth to One Won One at Leopardstown, should not be far away today.... she is the selection over Montecastillo, who is clearly in great heart if judged by his good effort in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~She's Our Mare
" [e/w] Alternative" ~ Silverware

5:25 Budweiser Celebration Stakes (Listed Race)
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~Maumee, Bach, Tarry Flynn, Inglenook, Mastermind, One Won One, Pulau Tioman, and Blackmail, all have claims in an open event . Pulau Tioman is an honest, ultra-consistent individual, who usually can be relied on to run his race .... as he did when getting up close home at Epsom last time... this should be run to suit, and I'd wouldnt be surprised if he got into the money
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~ Pulau Tioman, (e/w)
" Alternative" ~ One Won One,

6:00 Waterford Crystal World Sports Handicap
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." ~Mutakarrim, who was unlucky at Royal Ascot last time out in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes when he did not get the run of the race at a crucial stage, is a hopeful choice in the last........ useful hurdler Masalarian, could be the eachway alternative
" [#1st] CHOICE " ~Mutakarrim,
" [e/w] Alternative" ~ Masalarian

ROYAL ASCOT 2001
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
