THE IRISH GUINEAS MEETING 2001-

SELECTIONS - For each race, I have given you who, in my view, are the likeliest winners, as well as horses who could run well at eachway odds. 'R*ecommended' horses have, in our view, the best chances of success each day. Any horses from our 'Horses To Follow' list are shown at the foot of each race's analysis.

POSTING TIMES FOR SELECTIONS_ Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps

CURRAGH
Sunday 27th May
2:15 European Breeders Fund Maiden
"THE ROOK " _ Very little to go on in the opener. Monarchoftheglen, a son of A P Indy trained by Aiden O'Brien seems the sensible choice, though Serjeant At Arms, may be one to note for the future
"1st * Choice" _ Monarchoftheglen,
"(e/w) Alternative" _

2:45 Helen Hannan Memorial Handicap
"THE ROOK " _Caumshinaun, Boley Lass, Peak Viewing, Ridyan, Top Style, Assigh Lady, Grassland Star, Your The Lady, Zestril, Cache Creek, Caffrey's Gold, Cashel Ridge, Cluzot, Estival Park, River Days, and Carhue Gold all have chances in a trappy handicap. Your The Lady, who ran creditably , when trained in the UK last term (including winning twice last July) is a tentative selection
"1st * Choice" _ Your The Lady, (e/w)
" Alternative" _ Ridyan,

3:15 Entenmann's Handicap
"THE ROOK " _Khaysar, Norway, The Lady Leopold, La Golondrina, Diamond Trim, Henry Afrika, San Marco, Scottish Minstrel, Factice Royal, Frametti, Per Amore, Scolardy, and A C Azure, also catch the eye in another trappy heat. La Golondrina, who was a creditable third to Bonheur over a shorter trip at Navan is another tentative selection. Norway; a rare runner in handicap company for Aiden O'Brien is the alternative
"1st * Choice" _ La Golondrina
"(e/w) Alternative" _

3:45 Tattersalls Gold Cup (Group 1) (4yo+) Winner Ł124,000.00 1m2œf (1m2f110y) 6 run

Bach A P OŽBrien 49-0 M J Kinane
Fantastic Light Saeed Bin Suroor 59-0t L Dettori
Give The Slip Saeed Bin Suroor 49-0 R Hills
Golden Snake J L Dunlop 59-0 Pat Eddery
Kalanisi Sir Michael Stoute 59-0 K Fallon
Muakaad D K Weld 49-0tb P J Smullen

Runner[s] from our 2001 FLAT.' Horses to Follow' feature__ Kalanisi
"THE ROOK " _Fascinating renewal of the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Presumably last year's Ebor winner Give The Slip, or impressive Longchamp winner Golden Snake may make the running, and they should ensure they, Kalanisi, and Fantastic Light battle this out. I am a huge fan of Kalanisi, and this horse should be for another good season. Even though he may still need this , he is taken to confirm Churchill Downs form with Fantastic Light
"1st * Choice" _ Kalanisi
"(e/w) Alternative" _

4:20 Entenmann's Irish 1,000 Guineas (Group 1) (3yo) Winner Ł126,675.001m 16 run

Bonheur A P OŽBrien 39-0C OŽDonoghue
Coney Kitty D Hanley 39-0Pat Eddery
Cool Clarity D K Weld 39-0P J Smullen
Crystal Music J H M Gosden 39-0L Dettori
Dance Till Dawn Mrs John Harrington 39-0F M Berry
Imagine A P OŽBrien 39-0J A Heffernan
Karasta Sir Michael Stoute 39-0K Fallon
Katherine Seymour M J Grassick 39-0E Ahern
Love Me True A P OŽBrien 39-0P J Scallan
Mala Mala T Stack 39-0W M Lordan
Rebelline Kevin Prendergast 39-0D P McDonogh
Scarlet Velvet John M Oxx 39-0J P Murtagh
Sequoyah A P OŽBrien 39-0J P Spencer
Softly Tread C Collins 39-0P Shanahan
Speirbhean J S Bolger 39-0K J Manning
Toroca A P OŽBrien 39-0M J Kinane

Runner[s] from our 2001 FLAT.' Horses to Follow' feature__ Karasta
"THE ROOK " _Crystal Music, Toroca, Cool Clarity, Karasta, Sequoyah, Imagine, Katherine Seymour, Rebelline, Scarlet Velvet, and Speirbhean, look the likeliest winners of the second Irish classic. I remember thinking how much Crystal Music, would come on her run in the 1000 Guineas. She ran a solid race that day, and must go well, however I thought she was a ten furlongs filly and she may be found out close home. In that race Karasta disappointed hugely, however as you'd have expected her to have finished closer to Ameerat, it may be worth giving her the benefit of the doubt. Softly Tread who could do no more than win the Gladness Stakes with authority looks well up to getting into the money. If you're looking for an outsider, then twice-raced Scarlet Velvet, who is improving with each race, (finished just behind Toroca on her debut) may be one to cause a surprise
"1st * Choice" _ Karasta
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Softly Tread
"LONG*SHOT!!" Scarlet Velvet,

4:50 The Tote - The Easy Way To Bet Handicap (Premier Handicap)
"THE ROOK " _Albatros, Ansar, Gift Token, Experimental, Arellano, Holy Orders, Chanoud, Darasim, Barba Papa, General Cloney, Ballintry Guest, Catch The Dragon, and Distinguished Cove ........ another tricky handicap for punters !!!. Edward O'Grady 's ex french gelding Albatros, who won nicely at Leopardstown two weeks ago, clearly has room for a bit more improvement. .... He'll do for me
"1st * Choice" _ Albatros (FR )
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Barba Papa,

5:20 Airlie Stud Silver Stakes (Listed Race)
"THE ROOK " _El Bueno, March King, Pugin, should fight out the penultimate event. El Bueno, and, Pugin meet again after a great tussle over 1m4f at Gowran Park. That day El Bueno held the day and has a good chance of confirming that form, however the altered terms, distance and experience may help Pugin sway the day. He cannot under-estimate
March King if that horse is in the same form as when he finished behind King's County in last season's National Stakes. However, Pugin is still a raw talent, and may be able to sway the day
"1st * Choice" _ Pugin,
"(e/w) Alternative" _

5:45 Nolan & Brophy Auctioneers Ltd. Private Charity Sweepstakes
"THE ROOK " _ Awful race ... then again it is a sweepstake, and for a good cause. Regency Rake whose won over obstacles may be good enough
"1st * Choice" _ Regency Rake
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Itstheotherhorse

CURRAGH
Saturday 26th May
2:15 Bad Lippapringe Handicap
"THE ROOK " _ Catch Ball, Pakiefromathleague, Francies Fancy, Rossmill Native, Mist Of Magic, Ostjessy, Petite Ville, Veronica Cooper, Waterwing, Feadog, Mykon Gold, and Rooftop Protest, all have claims in a very open handicap. Catch Ball should start favorite for her prep race before a possible tilt at the French Champion Hurdle. She won comfortably at Killlarney on her latest start, and looks leniently treated if you take into account the massive improvement that she made as a staying hurdler during the winter .... She'll do for me
"1st * Choice" _ Catch Ball
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Veronica Cooper,

2:45 Setanta Media Marble Hill Stakes (Listed Race)
"THE ROOK " _Although Aiden O'Brien two year olds don't have quite the same dominance of previous years, Wiseman's Ferry, who won with a bit in hand at Cork last time out, is the safest option to the second
"1st * Choice" _ Wiseman's Ferry,
"(e/w) Alternative" _

3:15 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (Group 3)
"THE ROOK " _Juniper, Conormara, Eastern Purple, Final Exam, and One Won One, are the likeliest winners of this Group 3 event. It probably is worth siding with Juniper, who showed so much promise in the Gimcrack Stakes, before going onto win at the Curragh, however I'll be hoping that his 'class' sees him home
"1st * Choice" _ Juniper (USA)
"(e/w) Alternative" _

3:50 Entenmann's Irish 2,000 Guineas (Group 1) (3yo) Winner Ł126,675.001m

Amicable B W Hills 39-0 M Hills
Arch Stanton W P Mullins 39-0 N G McCullagh
Black Minnaloushe A P OŽBrien 39-0 J P Murtagh
Cashel Bay Luke Comer 39-0b W J Smith
Cruiskeen Lawn C Collins 39-0 P Shanahan
Dr Brendler J C Hayden 39-0 F M Berry
Freud A P OŽBrien 39-0tb J P Spencer
Maumee D K Weld 39-0b1 P J Smullen
Minardi A P OŽBrien 39-0 M J Kinane
Mozart A P OŽBrien 39-0t J A Heffernan
Mugharreb B Hanbury 39-0R Hills
Tamburlaine R Hannon 39-0 R Hughes

Runner[s] from our 'Future Winners' feature__ Mugharreb
"THE ROOK " _2000 Guineas 'form; is put to the test here, and Tamburlaine, seeks to confirm form with Minardi here. He is a lovely horse, however he does give the impression that a mile is a bit too far for him, and he may be work opposing here. Minardi who was the subject of favourable home reports prior to that race has a realistic chance of turning the tables on Tamburlaine, especially as he didn't appear to be ridden as though connections thought he'd stay this trip. In my view the tactics employed that day were too negative, and even if he may have struggled to have beaten the winner, he certainly should have been much closer than he was that day. Of the others Mugharreb attracted the attention of 'THE FLATMAN' after winning a maiden and he could be anything (see Future Winners feature). It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that he will show sufficient improvement to pose a serious threat to the principles. Freud who finally got his head in front, and Amicable whop won a handicap with a lot in hand are others to consider. The evidence does point to Minardi and he is the selection
"1st * Choice" _ Minardi  'R*ecommended'
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Freud
"LONG*SHOT"_ Amicable

4:20 Maginn TV Handicap (Premier Handicap)
"THE ROOK " _Montecastillo, Silverware, D'Anjou, Galanta, Osprey Ridge, Royal South, Masnada, Provosky, Annie's Luck, Basin Street Blues, and She's Our Mare, all have claims in an impossible handicap. D'Anjou who won a Roscommon maiden last August is open to plenty of improvement and is a hopeful choice
"1st * Choice" _ D'Anjou
"(e/w) Alternative" _ She's Our Mare,

4:50 curraghtravel.ie Handicap
"THE ROOK " _Wimbledon, Carlesimo, and recent hurdles winner Zawoyski make most appeal in the sixth. Wimbledon who also boast solid recent form over hurdles should go close, however I prefer Zawoyski
"1st * Choice" _ Zawoyski (e/w)
"Alternative" _ Wimbledon,

5:20 Entenmann's Guineas Festival Maiden
"THE ROOK " _Should Freud go well in the 2000 Guineas, it would be hard to ignore the claims of Julie Jalouse, who finished runner-up to him on her debut 19 days ago. She is preferred to Snowflake, and the ex french Aqribaa,
"1st * Choice" _ Julie Jalouse
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Aqribaa,

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Gossamer (12/1), Proudwings (10/1), Meshaheer, Smirk, Silent Honor, Dubai Destination, Brave Burt, Cop My Gator, and Yorkshire, were winning selections for The Flatman, and The Rook at the meeting.

THE IRISH DERBY
Galileo won as expected, however Mordshi, and Pugin did us proud !!!

ROYAL ASCOT
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
