THE JULY MEETING 2001-

SELECTIONS - For each race, I have given you who, in my view, are the likeliest winners, as well as horses who could run well at eachway odds. 'R*ecommended' horses have, in our view, the best chances of success each day. Any horses from our 'Horses To Follow' list are shown at the foot of each race's analysis.

POSTING TIMES FOR SELECTIONS_ Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps

THE JULY MEETING AT NEWMARKET
Thursday 12th July
2.05 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Class A) (Listed Race) 4runners 7f Penalty £12995.20 2yo only
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => Imtiyaz, Redback, and Highdown, all come into this race on the back of impressive wins, and things could be very interesting amongst them. Preference is for the David Loder trained Imtiyaz, who despite a lack of market confidence, couldn't have been more impressive when beating Sparkling Water by 6lengths of a similar surface to that he'll find today ...... and that may help him see off a determined challenge from these rivals
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" =>Imtiyaz (USA)
" [e/w] Alternative" =>

2.35 Glyn Hopkin Handicap (Class C) 13runners 1m Penalty £8482.50 3yo only
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => The second is very competitive; Whale Beach, Haasil, Emms Marika, Spanish Spur, Alnahaam, Smirk, and Pasithea, head the market. Given the prevailing conditions, it may pay to go with Haasil, who like Imtiyaz in the opener; is proven on the surface. He hasn't run since April, however he is a classy sort as he showed when beating Rampant by a comfortable 3 ½ lengths at Ripon. He is marginally preferred to Whale Beach, whose 3/4 length third behind Top Dirham at Epsom, is arguably the best bit of public form ... I have reservations about him on this surface and therefore will pass him over. of the others Emms ran with great promise in the Britannia at Royal Ascot and could be interesting for any eachway thieves
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Haasil
" [e/w] Alternative" => Emms (USA)

3.05 Darley July Cup (Showcase Race) (Class A) (Group 1) 20runners 6f Penalty £133400.00 3yo plus

Gorse/H Candy/ J Reid
Harmonic Way/R Charlton/ S Drowne
Lincoln Dancer/M Jarvis/ P Robinson
Misraah/Sir Michael Stoute/ R Hills
Mount Abu/J Gosden/J Fortune
Primo Valentino/P Harris/ W Supple
Shibboleth (USA)/H Cecil/ T Quinn
Superior Premium/R Fahey/ S Sanders
Three Points/Saeed bin Suroor/ L Dettori
Tillerman /Mrs A Perrett/ R Hughes
Vision of Night/J Dunlop/ Pat Eddery
Cassandra Go/G Wragg/ M Roberts
Pipalong/T Easterby/ K Darley
Freud (USA)/A O'Brien/
Iron Mask (USA)/Mme C Head-Maarek/ O Doleuze
Ishiguru (USA)/A O'Brien
Modigliani (USA) /A O'Brien
Mozart /A O'Brien
Volata/M Tompkins/ T E Durcan
Enthused (USA)/Sir Michael Stoute/ K Fallon

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => This is a complex puzzle, made more complicated by the prevailing conditions... Shibboleth, Mozart, Ishiguru, Three Points, Harmonic Way, Tillerman, Misraah, Cassandra Go, head the market, however there are ifs and doubts about them on the conditions.

I am surprised that Shibboleth is being supported, as I'm far from convinced that a strongly contested Group 1 event over 6 furlongs is idea, however his record at the course stands out, so there is clearly some appeal. Mozart, and Tillerman have good claims however both probably are best on a much faster surface, and the current conditions detract from their chances ... its quite conceivable that hey may not run. I have a similar view about Cork & Orrery winner Harmonic Way, but he may cope with the conditions better .... whether he's good enough is another matter. Mum-to-be Cassandra Go lines up for the line time before that happy event, and should go well however she is better at five, and could be found wanting close home ... that leaves Pipalong of those near the head of the market

I think she has outstanding claims, if you ignore her last effort at Royal Ascot, where she couldn't get competitive behind Harmonic Way - She also sustained a minor injury, when meeting with interference in running. The time before I supported her at York and stated;
"I can see the appeal of Bertolini, who ran so well in Dubai on his latest start, however he hasn't won for a while, and probably will represent poor value here. Despite carrying a penalty for her Group 1 win at Haydock, Pipalong, back over a more suitable distance makes most appeal (eachway)"

There aren't many Group 1 winners, who have carried successfully their penalty in lesser company, and back on more advantageous term here, must again be at the very least a great eachway bet at around 14/1..... get on !!!.

Should Pipalong fail to get into the first three, Mozart's class, or Cassandra Go's courage may prevail ..... I'll go with "Mum"

In the major races I like offering a long shot, and if there is a major surprise here, it could come from Mount Abu who love the ground, and will be staying on strongly up the final hill
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Pipalong, (e/w) 'R*ecommended'
" Alternative " => Cassandra Go
"LONG*SHOT !!" => Mount Abu

3.40 Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup (Handicap) (Class B) 20runners 7f Penalty £32500.00 3yo plus
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Judicious, Volontiers, Entail, Salty Jack, I Cried For You, Atavus, Border Subject, Highland Reel, Camberley, Bold King, Needwood Blade, and Intricate Web, all have sound claims in an open renewal of the Bunbury Cup. There is plenty of pace here, and with luck in running, Judicious, Entail, and Volontiers shouldn't be too far away. I really like Volontiers, who is really great heart at present, however he isn't an easy horse to win with, and invariably finds problems in running, as he did over course and distance last time out. With that in mind, i've relegated him to the eachway bet, and instead will select Judicious, also in great heart, who didn't get the clearest run when beaten ironically by Volontiers last time out at Newbury
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Judicious,
" [e/w] Alternative" => Volontiers (FR)

4.10 Bedford Lodge Hotel Maiden Stakes (Class D) 8runners 1m 2f Penalty £5434.00 3yo only
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Putra Sandhurst, slightly disappointing in the Derby, will be very unlucky if he comes up against a newcomer, able to lower his colours here.... that said, there are some nicely bred newcomers in the field, including Laughing Girl, a half-sister to middle-distance winner Jolly Sharp; Alexius, brother to useful middle-distance winner King Alex, Fairy Star, and Exhibit... these are worth noting for the future, but shouldn't be good enough to lower the favourite's colours
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" =>Putra Sandhurst,
" [e/w] Alternative" => Exhibit

4.45 Chippenham Lodge Stud Maiden Fillies' Stakes (Class D) 11runners 6f Penalty £5577.00 2yo only fillies
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Morouj could be another winner for the Loder camp here, however whilst she's a nice filly, Gossamer, a sister to the brilliant Barathea and half-sister to several other very useful winners looks as interesting on paper, and gets the vote in the finale. Ya Hajar, and Karamah appeal at eachway odds, Ya Hajar, is marginally preferred
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" =>Gossamer
" [e/w] Alternative" =>Ya Hajar

Wednesday 11th July
2.05 Bahrain Trophy (Class A) (Listed Race) 10runners 1m 6f 175yds Penalty £15312.00 3yo only
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => Year Two Thousand, When In Rome, Bosham Mill, Shaandar, Arrive, Fair Question and Tamiami Trail, are the likeliest winners of the opening race of the card. Year Two Thousand probably will go off favourite on the back of his fourth placing behind And Beyond in the Queens Vase at Royal Ascot. That was a good effort, however he did struggle to get home that day, and may be worth opposing at this trip, on this softer ground. Bosham Mill, and Shaandar, make more appeal on this surface, and the last named, who impressed on this softer surface on his debut, could just find more improvement at this trip and is the selection ......., Bosham Mill, didn't have luck in running in Year Two Thousand's race, and this difficult customer may be the eachway value of the race
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" =>, Shaandar,
" [e/w] Alternative" =>, Bosham Mill,

2.35 TNT July Stakes (Class A) (Group 3) 6runners 6f Penalty £23200.00 2yo only colts and geldings
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => I will be surprised if either Meshaheer, and Funfair Wane, don't win the second ..... I am still amazed that Meshaheer got beaten at Ascot,... without doubt one of Frankie Dettori's least memorable racing moment, having managed to find trouble in running from a decent draw, eventually pulling out right round his field, before coming inside to make his final effort ..... Meshaheer only just failed by ½ length to get past Landseer. Funfair Wane, is a lovely individual, who will make his presence felt at two and three, however he may find Meshaheer too much to handle here
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Meshaheer, 'R*ecommended'
" [e/w] Alternative" =>

3.10 Bonusprint Stakes (Showcase Handicap) (Class B) 9runners 1m 2f Penalty £26000.00 3yo only
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Arabie, Modrik, Pole Star, Askham, Momentum and Alphaeus, all have claims in the opener. Arabie didn't appear to quite see out 1m4f, when coming a good third behind Beekeeper at Royal Ascot. He previously won with authority at Windsor, and he can be expected to go close here... if he handles the ground he should go close .... He is the selection. Momentum, an easy winner at Goodwood, looks the eachway alternative
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Arabie
" [e/w] Alternative" => Momentum (USA)

3.40 Falmouth Stakes (Class A) (Group 2) 11runners 1m Penalty £34800.00 3yo plus fillies

Danceabout/ G Wragg/ D Holland
Proudwings (GER)/ R Suerland/ Y Take
Cayman Sunset/ E Dunlop/R Hughes
Affaire Royale/J Fanshawe/M Hills
Dear Daughter/ Sir Michael Stoute/ K Fallon
Heavenly Whisper/ M Bell/ M Fenton
Lady Lahar/ M Channon/ T Quinn
Lady Miletrian/ M Channon/Craig Williams
Lil's Jessy/J Noseda/ M J Kinane
Sheppard's Watch/ M Tregoning/Martin Dwyer
Silver Bracelet/ C Brittain/B Doyle

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => Danceabout, who finished 3 ½ lengths behind Medicean at Newbury, when clearly needing the run should be a warm order here. I don't think she'll have things her own way, as the inform Sheppard's Watch, and Cayman Island, are decent enough to poach this from her close home.... I don't think they will though. German challenger Proudwings appeals, and might not be too far away if she can run up to the form of her effort at Chantilly behind Mahfooth ... she's probably a longshot,... but I'll stand by her
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Danceabout, 'R*ecommended'
" [e/w] Alternative" => Proudwings (GER)

4.15 E.b.f. Swaythling Memorial Novice Stakes (Class D) 10runners 6f Penalty £6776.25 2yo only
______________________
Runner[s] from our 'Future Winners' feature__ Daily Sport (USA)

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Daily Sport; a Furlong To Go 'LONG*SHOT' selection, (33/1 shot, backed in from 50's) gave me a buzz.. and hopefully you a thrill, when running a great race on his debut behind Irony at Royal Ascot... He will come on for the effort, and may prove a value alternative to the impressive looking (on pedigree anyway) David Loder challenger Auriferous
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" =>Daily Sport (USA), [e/w]
" Alternative" => Auriferous (USA)

4.45 Paul Malone 40th Year Selling Stakes (Class E) 18runners 7f Penalty £4862.00 2yo only
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => I have no real inkling for this race ...... Cop My Gator, First Ordained, Ec Lady, Abercrombie, Eyes To The Right, Dispol Evita, Mathmagician, Munchie, Hanworth, and Honeypoint all appear to have chances of sorts. Cop My Gator's 4th behind Prince Dayjur at Salisbury in a B auction race, doesn't amount to much, but its probably the best form on show, and if he handles this ground, he shouldn't be too far away
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Cop My Gator,
" [e/w] Alternative" => Mathmagician

5.20 Reg Day Memorial Handicap (Class B) 12runners, 2m 24yds Penalty £10270.00 3yo plus
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Turnpole, Prairie Falcon, Yorkshire, Order, Alrisha, Knockholt, and Lady Coldunell, appeal in the lucky last. Turnpole is likely to go off favourite, having beaten Brother Joe by a neck at Haydock last time, however if the ground begins to cut up, Yorkshire, who is virtually guaranteed to get the trip on ground may be the sensible bet... certainly eachway at the very least. I really like Order, and I would select him, however I'm not certain how he'll act on this surface, therefore, i've relegated him to the subs bench!!!
"[ #1st CHOICE ]" => Yorkshire, [e/w]
" Alternative" => Order

THE JULY MEETING AT NEWMARKET
Tuesday 10th July
2.05 Strutt & Parker Maiden Stakes (Class D) £8000 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £5486.00, 13 runners.
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => Thirteen runners line up for the opening race of the July Meeting. On paper, this looks one of the easier races to call, because Dubai Destination, would only need reproduce the form of his debut, when despite running a little green, he and the impressive winner Waterburg pulled well clear of a useful looking field of maidens... I cannot oppose him. Of the others; Eshraag, a half-brother to a middle-distance winner; Graft, a half-brother to winners on the flat and over hurdles; Grampian; a half-brother to middle-distance winner Guaranda, Savannah Bay and Pekan Ku make most appeal .... Graft is offered up for those who want to attempt to find a value option
[#1stCHOICE] => Dubai Destination (USA)
" [e/w] Alternative" => Graft

2.35 H & K Commissions (Bookmakers) Handicap (Class D) £12000 added, 3yo plus, 1m, penalty £8502.00, 20 runners.
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => Twenty line up for race two; Iron Mountain, Topton, Bold Raider, Taffs Well, Indian Plume, Hail The Chief, Honest Borderer, Quantum Leap, So Tempting, and Nomore Mr Niceguy, are amongst those with claims... several of these caught the eye last time out [Taffs Well, Hail The Chief, and Honest Borderer], however the comparatively unexposed So Tempting, who won with a little in hand at Southwell last time is my well-named, and interesting eachway selection. Hail The Chief, who stayed on well behind Salty Jack at Goodwood is the alternative bet
[#1stCHOICE] => So Tempting, [e/w]
" Alternative" => Hail The Chief,

3.05 Cherry Hinton Stakes (Class A) (Group 2) £50000 added, 2yo only fillies, 6f, penalty £29000.00, 7 runners.

Lady High Havens/P D'Arcy /P Eddery
Princess Sofie/T Easterby/ K Darley
Shiny/C Brittain/ P Robinson
Shukran/R Hannon/ R Hughes
Silent Honor/D Loder/ L Dettori
Sundari/J Gosden/ J Fortune
To The Woods/N Littmoden/C Williams

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => If this goes to plan, Silent Honor should extend the good run of the Loder juveniles. She was very impressive when winning here on her debut, when putting 4lgntsh between her, and Lady High Heaven, who reopposes again today ........ I cannot see a form reversal, and whilst Silent Honor should oblige, I wouldnt be that surprised if Sundari, and Princess Sofie, followed her home
" [#1st CHOICE " ] => Silent Honor
" [e/w] Alternative" => Sundari

3.40 Princess Of Wales's Pearl And Coutts Stakes (Class A) (Group 2) £60000 added, 3yo plus, 1m 4f, penalty £34800.00, 9 runners.

Holding Court/M Jarvis/ P Robinson
Little Rock/Sir Michael Stoute/ K Fallon
Sadmason /H Cecil/ T Quinn
Ekraar (USA) /Saeed bin Suroor/ L Dettori
Lucido /J Dunlop /Pat Eddery
Mutamam/A Stewart/ R Hills
St Expedit/G Wragg/ D Holland
Zindabad (FR)/M Johnston/ K Darley
Sunny Glenn/N Littmoden/C Williams

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." => Fascinating middle distance clash, with Mutamam, a creditable fourth behind Kalanisi in the Breeders Cup Turf, beginning another campaign... This is a competitive race for an introduction, with the inform Zindabad, and Sandmason, renewing rivalry after their great tussle in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, where Sandmason landed the spoils, plus Little Rock, Lucido, and Holding Court, who enter calculations on account of the possible change in ground.... However I'll go with St Expedit, who seems to have improved this term, and ran a solid race behind Egyptband at Chantilly last time out, and more importantly, should appreciate the likely strong pace on here. With the yard having been relatively quiet of late, Lucido may be a nice price ... He is a better horse than he showed in the Hardwicke, and on this softer surface, may make his presence felt
" [#1st CHOICE "] => St Expedit,
" [e/w] Alternative" => Lucido

4.10 Racingpost.co.uk Fillies' Rated Stakes (Class B Handicap),£15000 added, 3yo only fillies, 7f, penalty £9071.20, 11 runners.
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Soft Breeze, Kafezah, Matoaka, Palatial, Ashlinn, Sabo Rose, and Min Mirri, make most 9oappeal of the runners who line up in the fifth. Soft Breeze, Kafezah, and Matoaka, were all short price winners of insignificant races, however Soft Breeze, had more solid credentials, and get the vote. Min Mirri, who last year stayed on well to finish, 2nd of 9 behind Macaroon at Lingfield is the eachway alternative
" [#1st CHOICE " ] => Soft Breeze
" [e/w] Alternative" => Min Mirri

4.45 Jane Of Newmarket Rated Stakes (Class B Showcase Handicap) £15000 added, 3yo only, 6f, penalty £9251.00, 13 runners.
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Polar Kingdom, Armagnac, Statue Gallery, Alshadiyah, Native Title, Macaroon, Loyal Tycoon, and Blakeshall Boy, make most appeal in the sixth. The selection is Polar Kingdom, who took a while to find his stride, but he stayed on with great purpose to finish 3rd of 20, behind Orientor at York. He is still open to plenty of improvement, and is preferred to Macaroon, and Alshadiyah,
"[#1st CHOICE]" => Polar Kingdom,
" [e/w] Alternative" => Macaroon

5.15 Ngk Spark Plugs Soham Handicap (Class D) £10000 added, 3yo plus, 5f, penalty £6890.00, 15 runners.
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K." =>Effervesce, Dorchester, Brave Burt, Connect, Mousehole, Blackheath, Our Fred, Delegate, and Flak Jacket, appeal in the last. Flak Jacket who was caught near the line by Glowing in the Stewards Cup trial, has come to hand at the right time, and is just preferred to Effervesce, who last time out stayed on well to finish second to Blakeshall Boy at Newcastle. The frustrating Blackheath, has the form to win this, but doesn't do that very often .... another final on the podium looks likely again
" [#1stCHOICE] " => Flak Jacket
" [e/w] Alternative" => Blackheath,

Success Stories

ROYAL ASCOT 2001
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
