LXIII GRAN PREMIO MERANO FORST Steeple ch.- Internazionale - (Gruppo I)

Analysis & Selections by

  l'ippica italiana

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1mo _ IL VINCITORE?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (1.2.3. Piazzato) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>-The key to this race may be the Premio Cavalese Hurdle, run here three weeks ago. On that occasion Sikes Black came on top, beating Londrina into second, with Ferrum Rex in third and Hammerklavier back in fifth. They were well spread out that day and it is difficult to see the form being reversed, if Sikes Black repeats the form...

Formlines through Ner appear to be the strongest, therefore Sopran Pinkas gets the vote.

¦ (ONE TO JUMP 2003) - are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season?¦:¬>-Negro [POL]
¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- A very open looking Grade 3 hurdle. I think German raider Siberius, [winner of two of his five races this term - he was placed in the others] will go off favourite. He has impressed when winning his only race in Italy, her in June and has since run well in defeat, most recently when finishing second in the Markgraf Berthold - Jagdrennen L at Baden-Baden in August. He faces stiff opposition from Fratello Sole, [the winner of his last three starts, most recently when landing the Premio Nalles here at the beginning of September], Gold Generator, [who won a conditions event here two weeks ago], and my friend Negro, [one of the best four years old at the beginning of the year, who lost his way mid season. He ran a funny race in the Premio XLVIII C. Siepi Di Merano (Gruppo I) making up a lost of ground late to finish a respectable fifth behind Valgano - a fair effort for a four year old, against his elders]. Negro's penalty for an earlier win at this grade could prove to be costly, however he gives the impression that he is on the way back .... If he can stay handy, he is good enough to land this prize.
¦ 1mo _ IL VINCITORE?¹ ¦:¬>- Negro [POL]
¦ 2ndo piazzato?² ¦:¬>- Siberius [GER],
¦ 3rdo piazzato?³ ¦:¬>- Fratello Sole

Distanza metri 3.000 circa (1° giro in pista piccola, 2° giro in pista grande).

¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- German form seems to be at the fore in the fourth. Killerpinktens; [who won the Preis der Ostseesparkasse at Bad Doberman in August], and Alegrador; [who has a good record in Italy, who won the Dr. Poth - Silbernes Pferd / Agl. I
at Baden-Baden in May]. appear to have the best form .... Alegrador gets the vote.

|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>-A huge field line up for this valuable steeplechase... isn't it refreshing to have British interest for a change. Here is a run down of the field;

BEAUTY KING ¯ consistent chaser who has won two chases this term. Finished 5th behind Something Special in the Premio. U.N.I.R.E. steeple ch. last time out and will need to improve to figure here.
BLAZE OF GLORY [GER] ¯ Christian Sprengel's six year old was in good form last season winning his last three races in Italy. Has a good jockey up and is clearly expected to go well today.
DAISY D'ANGRON [FR} ¯ French raider was in good form in May/June winning twice at Auteuil. He hasn't built on that in three efforts in Italy and will do well to get into the money on current evidence
EROS DU BERLAIS [FR] ¯ Jürg Langmeier's German raider comes into this in good heart having landed the Premio Val Pusteria [Cond/ steeple ch] on his latest start. A repeat of his good third behind Ask Me Why in the Premio Grande Steeple Chase Di Milano [gruppo .I / steeple ch.] would give him a good chance here.
GOLDEN SPRING ¯ Has his first race in Italy, having shown fair form in France. His third to Present Bleu in the Grand Steeple-Chase De Deauville gives him a chance .... though he'll need to improve to land the spoils
HURDLE [FR] ¯ A useful handicap chaser in france on his day, however he doesn't wins as often as he probably should. He was a good second to Fustrien Du Paon in the Prix Jean Victor steeple ch. at Auteuil in June and that level of form would give him a chance here. He has twice finished behind Daisy D'Angron, which could be considered a negative, however he won a little hurdle race at Rochefort in preparation for this and has decent place claims
LEO LE LION ¯ Will not lack fitness having beaten Capitaine Leau [formerly with Nicky Henderson] when landing the Premio Val Ridanna [Vend. G.R. / steeple ch]. here last weekend ... probably has a bit to find.
MASTER BLADE [GER] ¯ Josef Vana's send another raider from the Czech Republic trying to land a valuable prize in Italy. Master Blade has been in good form this term having won two of his seven starts. He lost nothing in defeat behind Glogloglo in the Altes Badener - Jagdrennen / [Listed steeple ch] and could interesting
MERLINO MAGO ¯ well behind Something Special in the Premio. U.N.I.R.E. steeple ch. last time out and will need to improve to figure here.
NO SURRENDER ¯ Has been in good form this summer landing the Premio Val D'isarco [Cond G.R / steeple ch.] here in August before finishing fourth behind Something Special in the Premio. U.N.I.R.E. steeple ch... not without a chance here
NOMMEO ¯ Finished third behind Eros Du Berlais in the Premio Val Pusteria [COND/ steeple ch] on his first Italian venture, though he'll need to improve to land this prize.
PADDY'S RETURN ¯ Its refreshing to see a British trainer show the gumption to go after the big Italian pots... however a refusal in the Quinns Of Baltinglass Chase (for the La Touche Cup) at Punchestown in April and a distance thumping by Almanzor [arguably the best horse in the Czech Republic ] in the Paramo Gold Cup (Steeplechase) in June doesn't bode well.
PRESENT BLEU [FR] ¯ Comes here in rude health having landed the Grand Steeple-Chase De Deauville in August, before finishing a good fourth to Valgano in the Premio XLVIII C. Siepi Di Merano [gruppo I/ hurdle] here two weeks ago. A repeat of that level of form gives him a great chance here
RED DANCER ¯ Finished second to Eros Du Berlais in the Premio Val Pusteria [Cond/ steeple ch] on his last start, however has finished behind Blaze of Glory and Something Special in his previous three starts .. has a bit to do.
REGISTANA [GER] ¯ Frau Dr. Cestmir Olehla's German raider boasts a record of eight wins form seventeen starts. She has won her last two starts, (beating Taico and Something Special who reoppose here) and has to be respected.
REPERE [FR] ¯ Another horse in good heart for this. Repere has won three of his last three starts, including winning a € 100,000 chase at Waregem... has to be considered, however he's hard to evaluate
SCALIGERO [GER] ¯ Jim Culloty could have a good ride here if this horse were to return to his best form, however he hasn't impressed in three flat races since winning this last year ... hmm.
SKYWASSER ¯ Was in good form last season, however he hasn't impressed in two starts this term. Well behind Eros Du Berlais in the Premio Val Pusteria [Cond/ steeple ch] and has it all to do here
SOMETHING SPECIAL [FR] ¯ Erick Bec De La Motte's eleven year old has been in good form this term finishing in the money in his last three starts culminating in a good win in the Premio. U.N.I.R.E. steeple ch here at the beginning of the month... he should go well however he may find one or two too good here.
TAICO ¯ is a model of consistency and has finished second on his last three starts, behind Something Special in the Premio. U.N.I.R.E. steeple ch and before that, behind Registana here in August.. sure to be there or thereabouts
TY BENJAM [FR] ¯ The Favourite? ... Probably. This globetrotting french raider has the form in the book having won the Grand Steeple-Chase D'Enghien in October before finishing third to Stormez and Bilboa in the Prix Leopold d'Orsetti Grande Course de Haies d'Enghien (Hurdle) and seventh to St Steven in the Nakayama Grand Jump (Grade 1) (Chase). This six year old would have strong claims on that form, however he took a heavy fall in the Prix Richard Et Robert Hennessy Steeple-Chase at Auteuil two weeks ago and you'd have to hope he has go over that experience

¦ .S.U.M.M.A.R.Y. ¦:¬>- Whilst not matching the size of say Auteuil, Merano 's steeplechase course takes some jumping. With obstacles like the Oxer, [which comprises two hedges - The first hurdle is 110 cm. high, the second 150cm. They are separated by a 90 cm. wide ditch. Its total width measures 4 mt.] and the Big vertical hurdle [which is 180 cm. high and 90 cm. broad], there is every likelihood is such a big field of some bad luck stories. Hopefully at the business end of the race, Ty Benjam, Blaze of Glory, Registana, Present Bleu and Hurdle will hopefully be to the fore. But for his fall last time out, there is no doubt that Ty Benjam would have been my selection, however there is a chance that an error ridden round could leave him with too much to do. Registana gets the vote.
¦ 1mo _ IL VINCITORE?¹ ¦:¬>- Registana [GER],
¦ 2ndo piazzato?² ¦:¬>-Ty Benjam [FR]

Ai vincitori dal 20 Luglio di un premio di € 6.800, kg. 1 di sopraccarico; di un premio di € 7.650, kg. 2; di un premio di € 9.350, kg. 3; di un premio di € 11.050, kg.4. |¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- Italian Legend, [a fair second to Hebron in the Premio Monte Cauriol [Cond H'dle] here two weeks ago], Direct Play, [formerly trained in this country, Direct Play won his first race in Italy, here in August], Silly Game [who won a maiden race at the end of August] and Calcio, [ whose shown promise in Germany, who is making his debut over obstacles here] make most appeal in the sixth. Hebron is fairly decent , so its hard to get away from Italian Legend's credentials
¦ 1mo _ IL VINCITORE?¹ ¦:¬>- Italian Legend
¦ 2ndo piazzato?² ¦:¬>- Direct Play,
¦ 3rdo piazzato?³ ¦:¬>- Calcio,

¦ VIIª ¯ MERANO ¦:¬>- 17.45 - PREMIO TROFEO AMAZZONI PALACE-CESKA (Piana - Amazzoni) - 2a Prova valida per il Trofeo. ¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- The finale is on the level. Ocho Ladros comes here having won his last three races, most recently the Clemente Papi Tr.Agri Piano at Milano in June and commands plenty of respect, although Galaxy Warrior and Mit Club [who has been running consistently of late], and German raider Table Run, [a winner at Baden-Baden in May, who was well behind at Krefeld on his most recent start] provide stern opposition. If Ocho Ladros is fit he should oblige and he gets the vote

17.05 - Gran Premio Di Milano - {Gr.1} E 340.780 - Mt. 2400 - P. Grande - TRIO
An intriguing clash of the generations comes next - here's a quick summary on each of the seven runners;
EINSTEIN - the winner of three of his last four starts, most recently, when winning a conditions race over 2400 Mt. here at the end of April. His only recent defeat was at the hands of Jeune Dream at Roma in March.
FALBRAV - Progressive four-year-old who has won his last three starts, on the last occasion beating Ekraar in the Premio Presidente Della Repubblica SIS {Gr. 1} (Colts & Fillies) (4yo+) in the middle of May.
HAWKEYE - Much travelled individual, who hasn't run since finishing fifth to Grandera in the Singapore Airlines International Cup {Gr. 1} - Hasn't won since winning the Desmond Stakes {Gr. 3} in August 2001.
JEUNE DREAM [U.S.A.] - A respectable 6th to the useful Rakti in the Derby Italiano {Gr. 1} at the end of May, Jeune Dream has returned to winning way when taking a Listed race here last weekend over 2000 Mt.
NARRATIVE - Very difficult to evaluate. He beat Grandera decisively when landing the Dubai City Of Gold {Gr. 3} at Nad El Sheba in February, but disappointed when finishing in the ruck behind Nayef in the Dubai Sheema Classic {Gr. 1} a month later. Made a triumphant return to Europe, when landing the Premio Carlo d' Alessio {Gr. 2} with consummate ease.
SABIANGO [GER] - Useful raider from Germany, who landed the Credit Suisse Private Banking Pokal {Gr. 1} at Köln last August (beating Boreal), before finishing third to Mordshi and Boreal in the UAE Grosser Preis von Baden {Gr. 1} on his last start in September 2001.
SNETTERTON - Well beaten by Narrative on his recent start, and needs to improve significantly to figure here.
¦ summary ¦:¬>Narrative and Sabiango will be very hard to beat here, however I was really impressed with Falbrav's victory in the Premio Presidente Della Repubblica, and I'd be tempted to take a chance with him.

Falbrav overhauls Narrative close home to land the spoils.

15.00 - Premio Primi Passi {Gr.3} E 90.860 - Mt. 1200 - P. Dritta - TRIO
A fascinating clash opens the card at Milano today. Mick Channon's Checkit who has won two of his three starts this term at Pontefract and Nottingham, takes on some useful Italian juveniles. Of these, I like the claims of Golden Danetime [winner of his last two starts], Le Vie Dei Colori, [unbeaten so far in three starts], and Liri, [who won impressively here at the end of May. I'm sure Checkit will go close, however I've seen a couple of Le Vie Dei Colori's starts and it wouldnt surprise me if he maintained his unbeaten record.

Le Vie Dei Colori maintained his unbeaten record

ASK ME WHY WINS THE GRAND STEEPLE CHASE DI MILANO
1° 1 Ask Me Why
2° 5 Merlino Mago 3½ L
3° 2 Cecco Stayer 30L.
4° 7 Royal Hoc 9L
5° 3 Eros Du Berlais 7L
Thierry Civel's Ask Me Why ridden by Christophe Pieux snatched the Grand Steeple Chase Di Milano right on the post after an enthralling batting with Merlino Mago up the final straight. Whilst Falbrav was causing a bit of a surprise when out battling Ekraar to land the Group 1 Premio Pres. Della Repubblica at Capennelle, our "hope" Cecco Stayer cut out a sensible early pace, with Royal Hoc and Gerko (who was to fall when weakening during the final circuit). If a race was ultimately ever was decided by jumping, it was here, as it was evident that Ask Me Why's clean (and clear) jumping over these hedges (similar to bullfinches fences in France but with more depth) was conserving energy, whilst his rivals attempts to brush through the obstacles (particularly Merlino Mago, who did well to survive a blunder right in front of the stands, which knocked Owenbwee out of contention).

Cecco Stayer's attempt to make all floundered with four to go and Merlino Mago (who had been making up relentless progress since his blunder) and Ask Me Why locked horns for a titanic struggle. Both pinged the last, and it took all of Christophe Pieux's strength to get his mount in front just before the post home. Cecco Stayer and Royal Hoc who cut out the early running were an honourable third and fourth.

PLINKSY LANDS THE PREMIO CORSA SIEPI DEI 4 ANNI
1° 6 Plinsky
2° 3 Del Mar Dancer 6L
3° 8 Windlight 13L
4° 5 Negro 7L
5° 7 San Teodoro 3L
The hitherto unbeaten Plinsky maintained his unbeaten record, when putting in an amazing performance to land the Premio Corsa Siepi Dei 4 Anni - Gr.Ii . A son of King's Theatre, Plinsky had shown bits of form on the level and had come tenth in last year's Derby Italiano - Yoga (Group 1). He impressed me in his easily taking his first two starts over obstacles, however I fully expected Negro, (who had won his last three starts) to prove too strong. As it transpires Negro failed to fire (not jumping with any of the fluency shown in previous starts) and despite leading to the first he was quickly past by Plinsky, who after been dropped up at the back of the field, proceeded to charge to the front of the field, and quickly establish a clear lead with he never relinquished. Negro, plus Del Mar Dancer and Windlight made a vain attempt to catch him, but never came remotely close. On this sort of surface Plinksy will be very difficult to beat, though formlines through the second and third suggest that Negro wouldnt be far behind him with more cut in the ground.

BAGNI DI PETRIOLO THE BRAVE !!!
1° 1 Bagni Di Petriolo
2° 4 Jar (a nose)
3° 3 Hanover House ¾L
4° 12 Vamabushi 5L
5° 7 Sardoum 13L
Whilst I was slightly disappointed by Negro's efforts in the Premio Corsa Siepi Dei 4 Anni, I expected Bagni Di Petriolo to land Group 1 Premio Gran Corsa Di Siepi Mi ... He did, but boy was it close!!!. As usual Bagni Di Petriolo attempted to make all, but it became quite evident from early on, that he wasn't happy on this quick surface. He was stalked throughout by Jar; (a seven year old son of Niniski, who had been campaigned in Group company in Italy and Germany before embarking on a successful jumping campaign), who never allowed him to build up his customary big lead throughout. With two to jump Bagni Di Petriolo still looked like prevailing, however his apparent dislike of the ground became more pronounced and instead of excelling he decelerated .. to such an extent that Jar whittled away his lead up the run in .... Halfway up the runway ... Jar puts his head in front and seems certain to go away and win by a clear margin ... however Bagni Di Petriolo wasn't having any of it. He put his head down and battled, in a manner reminiscent to Ardross (who he isn't too dissimilar to). After going at least a neck down Bagni Di Petriolo put his head down and inched his way back as the line grew nearer and near .... Did he make it? .... I thought he'd lost .... the commentator was still coming down from one of the most dramatic race commentaries I'd heard in a while (South American football commentators have nothing on this guy!!!) .... I had to wait until watching a re run late last night to find out that he'd just got back up ....Both the winner and runner up come out of this with great credit .. their next meeting is will be worth waiting for.
