Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.
Whether it be
"the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
¦ Iª ¯MARKET RASEN ¦:¬>- 2:30 Ladies Day Selling Hurdle - £2650 added, 4yo plus, 2m 1f 110yds, penalty £2058, 11 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>A weakish-looking seller opens up proceeding at Market Rasen today. Of the eleven runners due to line up; Governor Daniel, Dabus, Pailitas, Sounds Cool, and Milan King,
appear to be the only runners worth concentrating on. Governor Daniel, who won earlier the weak at
Huntingdon is getting on now in years, however he still seems to possess enough
of his ability to hold his own at this level this handicap. Only Dabus, [who made a good
return to hurdles after a break of 654 days, here in August, when finishing
third in a similar event] and Pailitas, [a sprinter in his native
Germany, who has the ability top win this, however only barely stays this trip and need to be more co-operative than he was last
time out when bolting before crashing through the wing of the forth hurdle] make any appeal in opposition. I have to stick with the favourite here.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Governor Daniel,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Dabus,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Pailitas [GER], [e/w]
¦ IIª ¯MARKET RASEN ¦:¬>- 3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices' Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with
"A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27
days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he'd have been an excellent eachway wager}.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Mount Gay,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Misty Ridge,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Ashgar [USA],
¦ IIIª ¯MARKET RASEN ¦:¬>- 3:35 Crossroads Truck And Bus Steeple Ch, [H' cap] -£7500 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f, penalty £5109, 6 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Gatorade, Passereau, Night Fighter, Ulusaba, and Glinger make most appeal
in the third. Ulusaba, [second to Flahive's First at Cartmel last weekend] and Gatorade,
[beaten 21lengths at Worcester last saturday] have the best recent form on offer, however Passereau, Night Fighter, and Glinger are arguably more interesting. Glinger has to be considered off of his featherweight, however he is a maiden , which is a concern.
whilst Passereau has a good chance if he gets his jumping together [something which has which has
blighted his English career]. Night Fighter is arguably the most interesting
of these, as he makes his debut over fences here. He pulled up sore last weekend at
Cartmel last weekend, but not before he cruised home by 15lengths. He is the riskiest choice ... but
probably the most open to improvement.. and therefore he gets the vote.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Night Fighter (GER)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Passereau (FR)
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Ulusaba,
¦ IVª ¯MARKET RASEN ¦:¬>- 4:10 Brigg Office Supplies Hurdle, [H' cap] -
£6500 added, 4yo plus, 2m 3f 110yds, penalty £4537, 12 runners.

¦ (ONE TO JUMP 2003) - are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season?¦:¬>- Jumpty Dumpty (FR)
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Homer, Glacial Missile, Xaipete, Terdad, Lemon Bridge, Pacifyc and Jumpty Dumpty make most appeal in the fourth on the card. Homer [on his first race for Martin
Pipe], stayed on well from well off of the pace to finish second to irish raider Rigolade at Bangor last time out. He should improve a bit on that effort, however he
doesn't warrant being such a short priced favourite here. I do like Lemon Bridge who won at Stratford in June,
however a word of warning .. he has since run poorly on the flat and refused to race on one occasion at York. He is well
treated on his old form, however his temperament may be getting the better of him.... bets
should be kept to minimum layouts. You could , as an alternative consider having
a little wager on Jumpty Dumpty "our representative" from this
season's "horses to follow" list. He is probably the horse most
open to more improvement here and a repeat of his winning form at Exeter in May gives him a
sound eachway claim here.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Lemon Bridge §
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Jumpty Dumpty (FR), [e/w}
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Homer,
¦ Vª ¯MARKET RASEN ¦:¬>- 4:40 Summer Fun Steeple Ch, [H' cap] - £6500 added, 5yo plus, 3m 1f, penalty £4439.50, 8 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Major Adventure, Royal Barge, Mapleton, Piccadilly, Mothers Help and Rigadoon, are the
likeliest to prevail in race five. Mapleton [ a winner of three races already this season], still looks the one to be on here. Sue Smiths runners is still on the upgrade and a repeat of the form of his win over Ashgar at Sedgefield last time out may be good enough. Piccadilly, on her third start
over fences is still capable of improvement and could be the chief threat, [... and best of the eachway possibles]
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Mapleton,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Piccadilly, [e/w]
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Mother's Help
¦ VIª ¯MARKET RASEN ¦:¬>- 5:15 Miss Market Rasen Novices' Hurdle - £4250 added, 4yo plus, 2m 3f 110yds, penalty £3195.50, 7 runners.

¦ (ONE TO JUMP 2003) - are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season?¦:¬>- Douceur des Songes (FR)
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Douceur Des Songes, Rutledge Red, and Alvaro are the three to
concentrate on in the finale. Douceur Des Songes is 10lbs+ clear of her rivals and
should oblige on official ratings, [especially on a reproduction on her early season form] I think she'll win, however she was
disappointing last time at Southwell and Rutledge Red, [a horse that I have a lot of time for] should pose a big threat here. He should improve as the season progresses and who knows he may join Douceur Des Songes on our ONE TO JUMP list... I
think he'll give her plenty to think about ... but will come off second best.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Douceur des Songes (FR)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Rutledge Red
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Alvaro
