Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating
each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or
even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er WAHL), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds;
(plaziert-wettend) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> Ran an excellent second to Warrsan at Goodwood (14F-Good) on 23 May going down by a head. This was quite a step up in form based on a sole middle distance maiden victory at Bath last season together with some rather modest efforts overall. In view of the progressive nature of Warrsan (ran with credit in the Ascot Gold Cup), to try and concede 8lbs to this individual was probably a stiff task. There was 3.5 lengths back to the third horse at Goodwood and it looks like good form. Now that his trainer appears confident that this horse can handle quicker ground he should finds winning opportunities not only next time but as the season progresses.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> One assumes connections spent the time between this one's reappearance at Leicester in April (where he pulled the arms off his jockey) - where he still ran promisingly,- and his next start on 17 June on settling this fellow in his races. Connections seem to have achieved that aim based on his 2/11 at Windsor to Football Crazy (in the form of his life) where he stayed on to good effect to chase home the enterprisingly ridden winner despite starting at 16-1. In effect, it was the policy of restraint which was his undoing in that his jockey was at pains to settle him in and he
couldn't quite get up. Although, raised for that effort, he still looks well handicapped and can deliver next time at around 10F.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> Is retained (see previous entry). 2 runs following that posting have yielded little and understandably his handicap mark has dropped again. Calgarth remains of some interest, however, as on both starts he had valid excuses. At Wolverhampton, he probably failed to act on the surface, while at Carlisle his stamina was never going to stretch that far (9F) especially on a stiff track with soft ground conditions not assisting. Calgarth, who is probably a sprinter pure and simple (although may get 7F on what we've seen) was initially added with that sphere in mind. We expect him to be winning when he encounters these conditions at a suitably modest level.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> Milton Bradley who did so well with his sprinters last season (typified by this individual who won 5 times) could be just about to bring him to the boil again judged on his pleasing effort at Kempton on June 1st over 6F. Showing considerable pace all the way he was just run out of it in the final furlong beaten around two lengths by CD Flyer eventually finishing 5th of the 18 runners. As this one loves very fast ground, if the rain ever stops this summer, then conditions should soon be in his favour, and he looks sure to be able to defy a still reasonable looking handicap mark over his favourite 6F trip.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> Despite being 8, showed his time was near when running well earlier this week at Windsor. As we said about Currency (see his entry in this section) Milton Bradley does so well with his sprinters - although not really firing just yet it won't be much longer! - that he looks sure to exploit this horses falling handicap mark over either 5F or 6F in the near future when ground conditions are on the fast side.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> Runner up in Class D Showcase handicap over 10F on second start this season following winning re-appearance. Although 2lbs higher here following that performance (and likely to be raised again after this good effort) we don't see this stopping him from reaching the winner's enclosure soon under the right conditions. Would have probably prevailed here if he had a clear passage and only just failed to get up. Likely to remain well handicapped and could find more improvement yet if stepped up further in trip as breeding suggests he can. Not likely to be highly tried and will probably continue to race at this level. Seems to require a sound surface and is usually held up - so always a slight doubt that he will get a clear run - but certainly looks a winner without a penalty if any near to hand engagements are taken up.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> Was all out to win Persian Lightening's handicap (see above) at Pontefract on her re-appearance. However, this was quite a competitive event at this level and she did well to win of a stiffish looking handicap mark of 72 on what she had achieved to date. Bearing in mind she was running after a long break (had a slight setback according to trainer) this was a pleasing comeback and she should be able to offset any rise in the handicap by the likely improvement forthcoming from this race. She could be an improved performer this season judged on this. Can follow up.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>Finished 5 of 19 - beaten just under 3 lengths - in the 7F (Class D) handicap at Salisbury yesterday. This does not tell the full story however. Always close up and having led at the furlong marker (went a length or so clear) he maintained that advantage until about 75 yards from the finishing post when swallowed up. This happened (to a lesser extent) over the extended 8F at Windsor the time before and at Leicester on his reappearance. Well worth noting if dropped back to sprint distances (6F would seem to be ideal) or an easy 7F when conditions aren't testing as all his recent defeats have left him on a winning handicap mark. However, his trainer continues to run him beyond sprint distances on stiff tracks so that needs to be borne in mind wherever he next reappears.

Despite a promising return over 8F (too far) at Carlisle (May 10) the handicapper has dropped this one down 3lbs to a low 49 rating. Trainer Haggas is sure to exploit this mark.

¦ .c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>The heavy rain that fell at Windsor on Monday (May 13) which turned the ground to soft combined with him chasing a fast early pace prevented Suggestive from following up on his previous win. Makin does well with such types - sure to be well placed.

That trip was also on the short side (did well to win in fact) and looks sure to find more improvement when stepped up in trip again. Should have stamina in abundance on breeding but is clearly not short of pace (took it up with over 1F to go at Newcastle).
