Analysis & Selections by

"a rØøk"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

"NEXT TIME OUT Notebook" - Next Time Out is our list of horses we either note in running during the current national hunt season, or are new to this discipline.

"NEXT TIME OUT"
NOTEBOOK ENTRY #003
Wednesday, February 4.
Our second list of horses to watch out for during the remainder of the season and the beginning of the 2004/5 campaign, consists of a mixture of promising efforts under rules and interesting newcomers to note;
ADIOS (GER)
b, g. Lagunas - Aerope
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Peter D Niven
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Adios is a five-year-old by Lagunas, out of a mare by Celestial Storm who won three of his twelve starts when trained in Germany, and was placed on six other occasions. Connections have entered him for the Letherby & Christopher Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and whilst that may be a little ambitious, this individual does possess ability and could well find opportunities around the northern circuit during the remainder of the season.
ARCHITECTE (FR)
b, c. Grape Tree Road - Alkmene (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [J-P Totain in France]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Architecte will be seen on British racecourses at some stage in the not too distant future. This four-year-old son of Grape Tree Road showed little aptitude when racing on the flat, however could not have impressed more when winning on his hurdles debut at Pau last month, where he beat Persy Des Mottes by 5lenths, with Blue Sax, [a very easy winner last weekend] another 4lenths back in third. He has bags of scope for further development and as long as he is given time to acclimatise, is the sort to do well over here.. it´ll be interesting to discover who the new owners will be
BAMBI DE L´ORME (FR)
gr, g. True Brave (USA) - Princesse Ira (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ian Williams
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Bambi de l´Orme is anther recent import from France that may pay to follow during the remainder of the season. This five-year-old son of True Brave have shown fair form on the provincial circuit over hurdles as a juvenile, when trained by Gil Chaignon, winning at Vire, Saint-Brieuc and Nantes. He has run three times over fences, finishing sixth to Royaléety in the €50,000 Prix de l´Oise at Enghien-Soisy in September `03, before finishing third to Mimisky in the Prix Le Hon a month later. His most recent start was in the Prix Oural at Auteuil in November, where he stayed on nicely in the last half mile to finish second to Crystolo [btn. 1½lengths]. He could improve for stepping up in distance and there are definitely races to be won with him in this country.
BILATERALAGREEMENT
b, g. Toulon - Choice Display
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--G. T. Hourigan in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- We´ve also included some bumper horses this week. We´ll be hoping for some promise from Bilateralagreement; a five-year-old gelding by Toulon, out of the mare Choice Display, [a daughter of Don], which makes him a have brother to winning chaser King Balthasaar. He has had one run to date in a 5 & 6yo Geldings Maiden at Wexford in November `03, where he was held up until making an effort five from home. This wasn´t sustained and he weakened out of contention, however there was a glimpse out ability and we´ll be hoping that he builds on this during the remainder of the season.
CHAMOSS ROYALÉ (FR)
ch, m. Garde Royalé - Chamoss (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨»- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨»- [Jean-Paul Totain in France]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨»-  British punters will shortly get the opportunity to see Chamoss Royalé, a four-year-old daughter of Garde Royalé, out of the mare Chamoss, (a daughter of Tip Moss). She has been bought after winning the Prix de la Bigorre Haies on her debut at Pau on 11/04/02. On that occasion she quickened up nicely to beat Halbina de Juillet by a length, with Salsepareille a further 15lengths back in third. The second and third have fair form around this circuit this winter, so Chamoss Royalé has plenty of scope for future development. It'll be interesting to see if she races before the end of the season.
DAD`S ELECT (GER)
b, h. Lomitas - Diamond Lake (USA)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Charlie Mann
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Charlie Mann seems to be increasing looking towards Europe to supply his yard and his most recent trip found him this five-year-old son of Lomitas, who is entered for the Letherby & Christopher Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. His record on the flat of a win from thirteen attempts isn´t exactly awe-inspiring, however his records over obstacles across Europe makes much better reading, him have won two of his eight starts as well and coming in the frame on four other occasions. He is impossible to evaluate however you shouldn't be surprised if he had the ability to well around the lesser tracks at some stage in the immediate future.
DE GILLIMEAN
br, g. Oscar - Mountain Beauty
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ted M. Walsh in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- De Gillimean showed promise on his first run this season. This five-year-old son of Oscar showed plenty of promise on his debut at Down Royal on 15/01/04. Held up initially, De Gillimean made steady headway from the back of the field from five furlongs out eventually finishing third to Black Apalachi, [btn. 8lengths, just failing to snatch second place near the finish from the second Accordingly. The run will not be lost on him and he might go close in a similar event before the end of the season.
ELECTRIQUE
b, g. Elmaamul (USA) - Majmu (USA)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--J A Osborne
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Electrique is an interesting entry from a yard who last year threw out a useful juvenile over hurdles. He is impeccably bred, being a son Elmaamul, out of Majmu; a daughter of Al Nasr, who was decent at two up to distances up to a mile. This makes him a brother to smart 7-8f 2yo and top-class miler Muhtathir, as well as a half-brother to 3yo winners Maftool (8f) and Jawla (7-8f). He ran five times last term on the flat finishing in the frame on each occasion, achieving an official rating of 75 after winning a maiden at York in September, where he beat Greenwich Meantime by 1¼lengths. Connections have entered him in the Letherby & Christopher Supreme Novices Hurdle, as well as the JCB Triumph hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and although it may prove purely to be speculative, he definitely is worth noting should he be given the chance to prove himself during the winter
EXOTIC DANCER (FR)
b, g. Turgeon (USA) - Northine (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Jonjo O´Neill
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Exotic Dancer is an exciting recruit for Sir Robert Ogden. This four-year-old son of Turgeon, had shown promise on the flat before winning his only two starts to date overt hurdles, on both occasion beating Pak Jack, [one of our horses to follow, who is a nice chasing prospect], most recently when justifying short odds to land the Prix Robert de Lipowski Haies at the end of October `03. He is entered in both the Champion Hurdle and the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, however in my view he is more of a prospect for next term, however he does have the ability/pace to run well over obstacles this winter.
GRANDE CREOLE (FR)
b, g. Byzantium (FR) - Sclos (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Paul Nicholls
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- We are always on the lookout for bumper horses to note and we noticed Grande Creole amongst the entries. This five-year-old son is out of the mare Sclos, [a daughter of Direct Flight], which makes him a half-brother to Glucose, a winner over obstacles at Auteuil for François Doumen. He is bred to be useful over jumps and he should have the speed to run in National Hunt races this spring before going onto better things next term
LACDOUDAL (FR)
gr, g. Cadoudal (FR) - Belfaster (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Phillip J Hobbs
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Lacdoudal is a new recruit to Phillip Hobbs` yard. This four-year-old gelding is by Cadoudal, out of Belfaster, [a daughter of Royal Charter], and he has already shown plenty of ability in France, winning over 2200m at Fontainebleau in October `03, before winning on his third start over obstacles at Pau in December. Connections have entered him for the Letherby & Christopher Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, so we´ll have to see whether he´s quite up to this... he is however, a lovely chasing prospect for next term.
LIBERIA (FR)
b, g. Kadalko (FR) - Unica IV (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Nicky Henderson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I would be very interested if Liberia ran over obstacles this winter. This five-year-old gelding is by Kadalko, out of Unica IV, [a daughter of Quart De Vin], and he has already shown plenty of ability in France for former trainer Guy Chérel, improving with each effort before posting his best effort to date last time out at Auteuil, when chasing home Ennemï d´État in the Prix Vertige Haies in October `03. Although he was in receipt of 13lbs that day, you will already be aware due to our ONE TO JUMP feature that Marcel Rolland 's runner is a useful recruit, who has already proved himself in Graded company. Connections have entered him for the Letherby & Christopher Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, I suspect that is speculative and you may be better off noting him down for the new season.... He should win races in this country.
MA FURIE (FR)
gr, f. Balleroy (USA) - Furie De Carmont (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Henrietta Knight
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ma Furie is another recent purchase from France. This four-year-old daughter of Balleroy, has joined present connections after showing promise in three of her four starts, finishing second on her first two starts on the flat before running away with a novice hurdle at Pau last month, where she beat Monique Disco by 8lengths. She has bags of scope for further development and having gone to a yard who will give her every opportunity to acclimatise, could well add to this tally over the coming months.
MANGUIER (FR)
ch, g. Mansonnien (FR) - Notabilite (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Guillaume Macaire in France
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Guillaume Macaire has entered three horses in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and whilst Val du Don and Meryl and attracting most attention, it would be unwise to dismiss Manguier; [a son of Mansonnien]. He was a prolific winner over obstacle during 2003, winning five times over both codes at places like Auteuil, Angers, Enghien-Soisy and Pompadour. He was particularly impressive when making all to land the Prix de Gap (Steeple-CH´.) at Enghien-Soisy in November, and was consider good enough by connection to run in the Prix Congress Steeple-CH´. (Grade 2) at Auteuil two week later and was the only horse backed to beat Cyrlight, [an outstanding juvenile chaser.. one of the best I´ve ever seen], however fell foul of the "Jugé de Paix" - the big water ditch in front of the stands. He ran as though his confidence was knocked next time out, however he has been given plenty of time to get over these exertions and if he did get entered before the festival would definitely be worth a second look though he is more likely to be aimed at the Graded 4yo chases at Auteuil in the Spring.
MANX ROYAL (FR)
br, g. Cyborg (FR) - Badj II (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Manx Royal is the only horse from Nicholashayne in this list. This five-year-old is by Cyborg, out of Badj II, [a daughter of Tadj], who ran over fences in France in the early-nineties. Connections have entered him for the Royal & SunAlliance Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, however I´m sure that is speculative and he may be seen to best advantage in a bumper during the remainder of the season.
MOROZOV (USA)
b, h. Sadler´s Wells (USA) - High Hawk
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Conrad Allen
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Terry Ramsden `s return to the owners` ranks got off to the perfect start on the all-weather and he is due to show us some of his jumping prospects for the remainder of the season. He has been talking up Royal Atalza, a winner over fences last time at Auteuil, however a better prospect may be Morozov, a five-year-old son of . Sadler´s Wells, who developed into a useful stayer on the flat, winning the Prix Hubert de Chaudenay Casino Barrière de Menton (Group 2) at Longchamp in October `02, as well as the Prix du Lys (Group 3) in June `02 and the Prix de Barbeville (Group 3) again at Longchamp in April `03. His temperament had begun to get the better of him as illustrated by him dumping Frankie Dettori soon after the start of the Grand Prix de Chantilly (Group 2) in June, however a change of scenery and routine could sweeten him up and he would be dangerous if he took to the game, however I´d want to see him go and do it, before wanting to back him with any confidence
NÚMITAS (GER)
b, c. Lomitas - Narola (GER)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Phillip Hobbs
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Former Sir Mark Prescott inmate Númitas could be interesting if he takes to this discipline. This four-year-old son of Lomitas, is out of the mare Narola, [a daughter of Nebòs], who was a winner in Germany at three. He is a half-brother to 4 winners, including German Listed winners Nenûphar [7f at three] and National Academy [10-11f at three and five-year-old]. He boasts some useful form on the level having beating Big Bad Bob in a maiden at Folkestone as a two-year-old, and progressed throughout last term, especially when stepping up in trip, winning on his penultimate start over 2Mile-2f at Pontefract in September `03 before disappointing when trailing home in eighteenth in the Tote Cesarewitch on his final start a month later. Connections have entered him in the JCB Triumph hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and he could yet figure here if he demonstrates a sound jumping technique.
SEA OF TRANQUILITY (JPN)
b, g. Sunday Silence (USA) - Distant (USA)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--James Leavy in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I´m surprised that far more Japanese-bred horses aren`t being bought as store horse/prospective jumping stock. The Japanese have been very astute is buying proven quality middle-distance stallions and below the crust of quality must be an underbelly in stoutly-bred individual who could do well in this sphere. Sea of Tranquility meets this criteria being a son of Sunday Silence, out of the mare Distant (herself a daughter of Nijinsky). This is a horse bred to be useful over middle distances on the flat so if he has any ability could do well over jumps in time... I´ll be keeping an eye on his performances this winter, very much with the future in mind.
SELVÅS (GER)
ch, h. Lomitas - Subia (GER)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Jonjo O´Neill
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Selvås is added to this feature with next season in mind. This four-year-old son of Lomitas, is out of the mare Subia, [a daughter of Königsstuhl], who won three times on the level in Germany in the early-nineties. Selvås is relatively lightly raced winning two of his nine starts, as well as finishing in the frame on five other occasions and one of the few occasions he missed the frame was in the Renault Deutsches St Leger (Group 2) at Dortmund in September, when staying onto finish fifth, [btn. 6¼lengths], by the winner Royal Fantasy. He´s been entered in the JCB Triumph Hurdle, however he may have to rush to qualify and hopefully he´s allowed to mature til next season.
SIDONIUS (POL)
b, c. Special Power - Solera (POL)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. P Townsley
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- My eyes always get drawn towards any horses formerly trained in Poland, as across Europe their progeny does so well over obstacles. I´m not trying to suggest that this four-year-old son of Special Power is another Galileo, however he has shown already that he has ability winning twice for former trainer Marek Nowakowski; over 1000m as a two-year-old, as well as more significantly the Nagroda ÓCEÀNA over 2400m on his final start. Connections have entered him in the JCB Triumph hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, however whilst that may be above him, it is worth stating in his defence, that his win in the Nagroda ÓCEÀNA seems to have been his only effort over a distance in excess of 1600m, therefore its quite possible he is open to more improvement. He´s no worldbeater, however he has potential if his new connections allow him to find his right level.
STATLEY RAJ (NDI)
br, g Mtoto - Donna Star
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Richard Rowe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Statley Raj has taken my eye on both his starts this season. This four-year-old gelding is by Mtoto out of Donna Star, [a daughter of Stately Don], who is a half-sister to triple French Group 3 winner and Prix de Diane runner-up Star Of Akkar. He hints at having ability running well for a long way on his debut at Huntingdon on 14/01/04, eventually weakening to finish 16lengths behind the winner Ferimon, before running a similar race behind Moorlands Highlander at Kempton on 02/04/04, this time finishing 40+ behind the principles. Looking at him, he appears to have plenty of scope for further physical development and it may pay to note his progression during the remainder of the season, very much for a hurdles campaign next season.
RUSSIAN LORD
br, g. Topanoora - Russian Gale
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: V R A Dartnall
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- If a horse´s pedigree means anything, then surely Russian Lord is worth noting for the remainder of the season. This five-year-old is a son of Topanoora, out of the mare Russian Gale, which makes him a half-brother to top-class novice chaser Lord Sam, who also won both his bumpers. He was backed down to favouritism on his debut at Kempton Park on 02/04/04, however was too green to do himself justice and after running prominently/leading until 6f out, he gradually weakened out of contention eventually coming home 19lengths behind the winner Moorlands Return. He will come on a ton for this effort and is worth noting for a similar event before going onto better things next season.
TSAR PARTY
b, g. Moscow Society (USA) - Full Choke
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Susan Nock
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Susan Nock is having a good season and after watching Dictum, [one of our ONE TO JUMP horses] bolt up at Ascot last weekend, any of her horses are worth a second glance. That's exactly how we came across Tsar Party, a seven-year-old son of Moscow Society, out of a Shirley Heights mare, who is entered in a Maiden steeplechase at Leicester next week. at first glance he has no form, however we scanned our Irish point-to-point formbooks and noted that he won a 4yo maiden by 6lengfths at Áthlacca during the 2001 season, which suggests not only that he has some ability, that at some stage he may have had an injury which has kept him off the course since. He is certain to have been well schooled and we'll be monitoring him during the remainder of the season.
VERSUS (GER)
gr, c. Highest Honor (FR) - Very Mighty (FR)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Charlie Mann
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Versus made an encouraging first effort over obstacles at Folkestone on 20/01/04. This four-year-old son of Highest Honor joined present connections having run five times in Germany, winning once over 1Mile-4f at Bremen in September `03. He seems to be up against it with short-priced favourite Constantine in opposition, as so it proved, however Versus didn´t go down with a fight and had he not made a mistake three out and pecked two out, the head-margin defeat might well have gone the other way. That´s respectable form and a similar juvenile event is certainly within his compass.
WILD PASSION (GER)
b, g. Acatenango (GER) - White On Red (GER)
¦¨¨added¨on¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 03/02/04
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Noel Meade in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Wild Passion is due to make his debut over obstacles shortly. This four-year-old son of Acatenango, is out of the mare White On Red, [a daughter of Königsstuhl], who won twice on the level in Germany in the early-nineties. Wild Passion wasn´t too bad himself, winning two of his eight starts, arguably his best effort being when landing the Walther J Jacobs-Rennen (Group 3) over 1m2½f at Bremen in June `03. He took himself his chance in the BMW Deutsches Derby (Group 1), but could only come seventeenth, however he ran much better in the Renault Deutsches St Leger (Group 2) at Dortmund in September, when staying on nicely to finishing only 2¼lengths behind the winner Royal Fantasy. He´s been entered in the JCB Triumph Hurdle, however he may have to rush to qualify and would be far better left til next season.. I´m sure connection will do what´s best for him.

"NEXT TIME OUT"
NOTEBOOK ENTRY #002
Wednesday, January 28.
Our second list of horses to watch out for during the remainder of the season and the beginning of the 2004/5 campaign, consists of a mixture of promising efforts under rules and interesting newcomers to note;

BAGANITE (AUS)
ch,, g. Grand Lodge (USA) - Lady Triscanny (AUS)
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Jonjo O´Neill
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Baganite is one of many who caught my eye amongst this weeks entries. This five-year-old is by Grand Lodge, who has done so well as a sire in Australasia, out of Lady Triscanny, [a daughter of Sir Tristram]. Jonjo O´Neill has done well with his purchases from this continent and I´ll be noting his progression very much with next season in mind.
BALLYALBANY
b, g. Lord Americo - Raisin Turf
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Susan Nock
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Ballyalbany made a promising debut in a bumper at Hereford on 02/12/03. He looked up against it against Graphic Approach and so it proved, however he belied his odds of 20/1, kicking on with the winner half a mile out, when that horse made his decisive move, and held on gallantly until the final bend, eventually finishing 14lengths behind the winner. Ballyalbany has the stamp of a chaser, and will no doubt come on from this effort.
BROOKS
b, g. Minster Son - Melody Moon
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--John Upson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Brooks made an encouraging debut under rules at Catterick Bridge on 24/01/04. This eight-year-old son of Minster Son had shown promise in point-to-points two years ago and hadn´t run since, until this day, however he jumped bold for most of the journey and although he fell at the last when a tired third, he did more than enough to suggest that should improve significantly on this run. His next run will be enlightening to see whether he comes on or goes backs for the effort, whatever happens long-term, he may be a fair tool in this sort of company.
CHERUB (GER)
b, c. Winged Love - Chalkidiki (GER)
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Jonjo O´Neill
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Cherub caught the eye on his British debut over hurdles at Kempton Park on 17/01/04. This four-year-old son of Winged Love, [out of a daughter of Nebos], came from Germany having won one of his eight races when trained by Andreas Schütz, and was tho0ught good enough to take his chance in the BMW Deutsches Derby (Group 1), where he came tenth. He was unfancied to win the Kempton race, however took my eye, travelling strongly off the pace, until failing to quicken when asked for an effort when entering the final straight. He wasn´t given a hard time soon afterwards and a 4lengths defeat by Tusk is no bad platform to launch his jumping career. Unlike some of these, I´d be disappointed if he didn´t win a race this term, [subject of course to how he is placed by connections]
COAST TO COAST
ch, g. Moscow Society (USA) - Madame Vitesse
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Edward J O´Grady in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Edward O´Grady is shortly due to introduce Coast to Coast, a five-year-old son of Moscow Society out of a Le Bavard mare. Coast to Coast is entered up in a few bumpers in the next week or so, therefore you may be interested to note that he has already shown signs of possessing some ability, having won a 4yo Maiden point-to-point at Butlerstown in April ´03, where he stayed on the beat Teutronic Prince by ½length. Steeplechasing will be his forte is the future, however hopefully he has enough pace to indicate that he is still progressing with experience. Like many of the horses listed, he will almost certainly be a better animal with another summer on his back.
DANS PRIDE
b g Presenting - Mindyourown
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Noel Chance
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Dans Pride caught my eye amongst the recent entries. This six-year-old son of Presenting, [out of a Town And Country mare], has had one run to date, in a 4yo Maiden point-to-point race at Kilmannock in April ´02, where he came fourth to Monteforte, [ who has gone on to win a bumper this term for Jim Old]. He has gone to a trainer with an excellent record in bumpers, and so that is probably the best chance he´ll have of success this term, however he should develop into a nice prospect for next season.
DICKENSBURY LAD (FR)
br, g. Luchiroverte - Voltige De Cotte (FR)
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Nigel A. Twiston-Davies
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--I like the sire Luchiroverte, particularly as his progeny tends to be more scopey than most, so I´ll be interested in the performance this season of Dickensbury Lad, a four-year-old, out of the mare Voltige De Cotte, (a daughter of Saumon), who was placed in an A.Q.P.S. flat race. I won´t be expecting a lot this term, but he could be interesting once the 2004/5 begins in earnest.
EZZ ELKHEIL
b, g. Bering - Numidie (FR)
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--John Jenkins
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ezz Elkheil is another newcomer to the jumping rank. This five-year-old son of Bering, out of the mare Numidie, [a daughter of Baillamont, who was the winner of several races in France, including a 1m2f listed event], is bred to be useful, and being related to 3 winners in France, notably Prix Saint-Alary winner Reve d´Oscar. He was clearly expected to do well on the level, however he never lived up to initial expectations and deteriorated mentally virtually refusing to race on more than one occasion. This is hardly a the most glowing of recommendations, however occasionally he put everything together and when he does he has a telling burst of speed which enabled him to win last term at Newmarket. He was touched off over two miles on his first run for John Jenkins at Lingfield on 24/01/04, and if he takes to hurdles will definitely be capable to winning races in handicap company... its a bit of an "if" though isn´t it?!!
KILLERS´ FURY
br, g. Topanoora - Ellen Gail
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Martin C. Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Killers´ Fury is a horse to note with the future in mind. This five-year-old son of Topanoora comes from the Irish pointing fields having only ran twice, falling when still in contention three our in a 4yo Maiden race at Dromohane in November ´03, before coming out two weeks later and justifying strong market support to land a similar event at Boulta two weeks later. He has been given an entry for the Royal & SunAlliance Steeple-CH´., and whilst be a step too far, he could be a horse to note either in bumpers or over hurdles before the end of the season.
LANÓS (POL)
ch, g. Special Power - Lubecká (POL)
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Richard Ford
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I´m very glad that Lanós is being given another chance over obstacles, especially as he improved on the all-weather over the last 14months. He didn´t look as though he stayed when he was tried over hurdles during the 2001/02 season, however wins over 1m4f at Wolverhampton and Lingfield over 1m5f put that possibility to rest. Now that he is settles far better, he could take advantage of a potentially lenient handicap mark of 87.
RUN OF KINGS
b, g. Kings Ride - Artic Keen
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Martin C. Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Run of Kings is another horse to note with the future in mind. This six-year-old son of Kings Ride, is out of the mare Artic Keen, [a daughter of Deep Run], which makes him a half-brother to Townleyhall, [who won twice over hurdles], My Man Dan, [who did the same], and Havetwotaketwo, [who has won 2 point-to-points]. He was bought to race over here, after his sole run in a point-to-point at in a 5 & 6YO Geldings Maiden race at Wexford in November ´03. On that occasion he was held up before making headway from halfway to have every chance at the last. Stamina keep into play and he stayed on stoutly to beat Kenny´s Gold a length. He has been given an entry for the Royal & SunAlliance Steeple-CH´., however that would be a hard task with so little experience. He could be a horse to note either in bumpers or over hurdles before the end of the season.
SOUTHERN STAR (GER)
gr, g. Sternkönig - Sun Mate
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Richard C. Guest
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Richard Guest has a shred eye so I´m always interested in his purchases. I noted that he has purchased Southern Star, a four-year-old son of Sternkönig out of a mare by Miller´s Mate. Unlike a lot of the recent purchase from this country, Southern Star has only had two effort, finishing second to Bailamos, [an inmate of Peter Schiergen ´s yard who has won three of his seven career starts in Germany] in the Preis der Wettannahme Springer Straubing (Maiden) over 1m3f in May ´03. He started favourite for his only other start, over a furlong less at the same venue a month later, however he didn´t build on that initial effort and came home a slightly disappointing fourth to Niklas, [btn. 12lengths]. Despite this effort, clearly he must possess some scope for further development and I´ll probably be using the remainder of the season to assess him.
SPORTING MAN
ch, g. Insan (USA) - Gleann Oge
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Paul Nicholls
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Paul Nicholls could soon be introducing an interesting new steeplechase recruit in the shape of Sporting Man. This seven-year-old son of Insan, is out of Gleann Oge, [a daughter of Proverb], and is now in Paul Nicholls ´ care after winning his only run to date, in a 5yo Geldings Maiden point-to-point race at Dungarvan in January ´02, by 8lengths from Whyso Mayo, [who has won twice since most recently at Aghabullogue two weeks ago]. Sporting Man clearly has ability and it´ll be interesting to see what path he follows during the remainder of the season.
TATES AVENUE
b, g. Zaffaran (USA) - Tate Divinity
¦¨¨trained¨by¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Nigel A. Twiston-Davies
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Tates Avenue is a horse to watch out for during the remainder of the season. This six-year-old son of Zaffaran, [out of a Tate Gallery mare], has had one run to date, in a 5 & 6yo Geldings Maiden point-to-point race at Farmaclaffley in February ´03. He didn´t run to badly showing up until four out eventually finishing seventh to Ross Leader, [btn. 21½lengths]. That run should have done him the world of good and even if he doesn´t win a bumper, he could develop into a nice prospect for next season... we shall see.

"NEXT TIME OUT"
NOTEBOOK ENTRY #001
Wednesday, January 7.
We've missed half the season, however we will each way put up some horses to watch out for during the remainder of the season and the beginning of the 2004/5 campaign;

AH YEAH
b, g. Roselier (FR) - Serena Bay
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Kim C Bailey
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ah Yeah made an encouraging British debut at Huntingdon on 28/12/03. This former Irish point-to-point winner led for most of the way, however couldn´t change gears like the principles, and was eventually swept aside, eventually finishing 15½ lengths behind the winner Martha´s Kinsman. We´ve noticed that he´s been given some entries in Novice chases and we may see him to better effect over obstacles before the end of the season.
ALMAH (SAF)
b, m. Al Mufti (USA) - Jazz Champion (SAF)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [Not Known]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Almah is amongst a recent batch of South African imports, who have been recently bought over for a hurdles campaign. This daughter of Al Mufti, ran 24 times in South Africa winning 5races, as well as finishing in the frame on 11 other occasions, amassing R338,725 in prize-money. Her biggest win was in the 2002 running of the J & B Reserve Stayers´ Handicap [gr.2] over (2800m), although she was also placed in these other feature races;
2001 2nd Woolavington Stakes (gr.2) (2000m),
2001 3rd Jasmine Stakes (Listed-Race) (2200m),
2002 3rd Caradoc Gold Cup (Gr.3) (3000m),
2002 3rd Gold Vase (gr.2) (3000m),
2002 4th Gold Bowl (gr.1) (3200m), G1,
2002 4th Lonsdale Stirrup Cup (gr.3) (2400m),
We´re not sure where she is heading however if she were able to translate some of that ability over obstacles, you would hope she would be able to find a little race somewhere at some stage this season, [especially mares´ only races].
AMMONIAS (GER)
b, h. Monsun (GER) - Augreta (GER)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Charlie Mann
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ammonias made an encouraging start to his career over hurdles. He ran eighteen times in Germany, winning four of them, as well as finishing in the frame on seven other occasions, and was fourth to Next Desert in the 2002 BMW Deutsches Derby, Charlie Mann declared him in what may prove to be a decent novice hurdle at Newbury on 29/12/03, where after being held up initially, He stayed on nicely to finish 4th to Cardenas, [btn. 10½lengths]. There should be more improvement to come and hopefully he can improve on this level of form before the end of the season.
BOB BOB BOBBIN
gr, g. Bob Back (USA) - Absalom´s Lady
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Colin Tizzard
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I´m already regretting not making room for Bob Bob Bobbin in our ONE TO JUMP feature, however fortunately this feature allows me a second bite of the cherry. he is impeccably bred being a son of Bob Back, out of that wonderful hurdler/chaser Absalom´s Lady. He has already shown promise on the racecourse on 27/12/03 at Chepstow, where he was second to Noplanofaction in the Letheby & Christopher "Championship" Stakes Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (Grade 2), [btn. 4lengths] with the third, Woodlands Genpower, [a winner of two bumpers], well behind in third. I´ll be surprised if he doesn´t win a race this term, however he definitely will be better with this season´s experience behind him.
BOOBEE
b, g. Mister Lord (USA) - Who´s She
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--P M Phelan
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Despite finishing a well-beaten ninth to He´s The Boss at Ascot on 27/11/03, [eventually btn. 38lengths], Boobee travelled fair better than his odds of 100/1 suggested he should. If he drops in grade or manages to get a fair handicap mark, it would not surprise me if he didn´t improve on this effort before the end of this season´s campaign.
BUNTER BARLOW (SAF)
b, g. Fine Edge - Jungle Creature (SAF)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [Not Known]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Bunter Barlow is another import from South Africa who we can look forward to seeing over the coming months. This son of Fine Edge ran 36 time in South Africa, winning 9 times, and well as finishing in the Frame on 11other occasion, amassing R1,042, 372 in Prize Money. He most prestigious win was in the 2000 J & b Met [gr.1] over 2000m, as well as a Listed Race over 1400m. He also finished in the frame on these occasions;
1999 2nd Winter Classic (Listed) (1800m),
2001 2nd Midsummer Stakes (Listed) (1400m),
2000 3rd Premier´s Stakes (Listed) (1800m),
2001 3rd Clover/Shackleton Milers Stakes (Listed) (1600m),
2001 3rd Premier´s Trophy (gr.2) (1800m),
2001 3rd Horse Chestnut 1600 (gr.1) (1600m),
2002 3rd A Division Handicap (Listed) (1600m),
You would hope that if he was able to translate some of that ability over obstacles that he would be able to win a race before the of the season.
CA NA TRONA
b, g. Accordion - Sterna Star
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Nicky Henderson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ca Na Trona caught the eye on his racecourse debut at Newbury on 29/12/03. This five-year-old is by Accordion, out of the mare Sterna Star, which makes Ca Na Trona a half-brother to Cheltenham Festival winner Hardy Eustace. He never really figured in this event , racing mostly in midfield before lack of pace told up the straight, eventually finishing 19½ lengths behind the winner The Rising Moon. He showed enough to suggest that he possesses ability and definitely is a candidate for next season´s ONE TO JUMP feature... let´s monitor the situation for the remainder of the season.
CARDENÅS (GER)
br, h. Acatenango (GER) - Cocorna
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Mario Hofer in Germany
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Cardenas caused a huge surprise at Newbury on 29/12/03, belying odds of 50/1 to win a decnet novice hurdle by 4lengths. Mario Hofer ´s five-year-old ran 10 times in Germany, winning of three occasion, as well as finishing in the frame on four other occasions. He only had one run over obstacles at Capennelle, where he was second to Regland, [btn. a short head], and clearly benefited from that experience as his jumping was, [bar the last], crisp and jockey Peter Gehm deserves credit the maneuver that enabled him to nick a clear lead entering the straight, which he then held all the way to the line. He wasn´t in the same league in Germany as Group horses Simoun and Ammonias who he beat here, and whilst many commentators suggest that the form may not stand up, he will be difficult to beat next time, especially if his sights are not set too highly.. there is certainly plenty of scope for this entire to improve.
CIPÍS (CZE)
b, h. Kento - Cecilka
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Pavel Kašný in the Czech Republic
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- We´ll be keeping an eye of events in Eastern Europe during 2004, especially as our enthusiasm for this strain of the breed increases. We´ll highlight a few of the more progressive horses for their coming season, the first of these is Cipís. This five-year-old son of Kento has only run seven times, however he has progressed with each effort culminating in his defeat of Kedon, [third in the 112.Velká pardubická Ceské pojištovny in 2002], in the Cena Registany-záverecná Steeple-CH´. Sezóny 2003 at Pardubice in October ´03. He is clearly going the right way and could well add to this tally in 2004.
COMMERCIAL FLYER
ch, g. Carroll House - Shabra Princess
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Commercial Flyer is a five-year-old by Carroll House, out of the mare Shabra Princess, which makes him a half-brother to the classy Our Vic. He was not disgraced on his debut at Chepstow on 29/12/03, chasing the main protagonists until weakening from three out, eventually finishing 29lengths behind the winner Distant Thunder. He has plenty of scope for the future and he should be capable of winning races once he gains further experience.
CZEDAR (POL)
ch, g. Grand Unit - Cz-wa (POL)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Josef Váña in the Czech Republic
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Czedar is another interesting performer from the Czech-Republic. This six-year-old gelding by Grand Unit, out of the mare Cz-wa, [a daughter of Dakota], has run fifteen times and although he isn´t the most consistent of sorts, does occasion show a high level of ability, most recently at Pardubice in September when he won the Cena Group 4 Securitas, a.s. Steeple-CH´., at Pardubice beating Kirk, who we added to our ONE TO JUMP feature. He is particularly interesting if he could become more consistent and we will monitor him this spring to see if this occurs
FENIX (GER)
b, g. Lavirco (GER) - Frille (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Mrs. L Wadham
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Our appetite for German-bred horses gathers apace and I´m always interested in any foreign purchases, particularly when they hail from shrewd outfits like Mrs. Wadham ´s. This four-year-old son of Lavrico, [out of a daughter of Shareef Dancer], has won two of his six starts, [as well as being placed on two other occasions] and comes here on the back of a second to Limoros in the Preis der Wiedereröffnung des Mercure Hotel Newa at Dresden in October ´03. I´m not expecting him to turn into some world-beater, however he definitely has potential and I will looking for some encouragement from him in his initial starts over obstacles
FLORIDA DREAM
b, g. Florida Son - Ice Pearl
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Bridget Nicholls
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Florida Pearl ´s younger brother is another runner to grab our attention from the bumper won by The Rising Moon at Newbury on 29/12/03. He chased the leaders until weakening with half a mile to go, eventually finishing 39lengths behind the winner, however he is a likeable sort and he will be seen to better light next term when he goes over obstacles. I would hope that there will be improvement on this level of form before the end of the season.
FONTANESÌ
b, g. Sadler´s Wells (USA) - Northern Script (USA)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Fontanesì is an interesting recruit to Martin Pipe ´s yard, having previously been trained by Aiden O´Brien in Ireland. This four-year-old son of Sadler´s Wells out of an Arts And Letters´ mare, only ran twice, winning a 1Mile~2f Maiden on heavy ground at Naas in May ´03. There is plenty of scope for further development and the Nicholashayne operation will ensure he is well schooled.. It´ll be interesting to see how he gets on this winter.
FRANK MOSS BENNETT
b g Bahhare (USA) - Despondent
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Jessica Harrington
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Frank Moss Bennett is an interesting recruit. This four-year-old son Bahhare, is out of Despondent, a daughter of Broken Hearted, [who was placed on the flat a four], which makes him a half-brother to 6f 2yo winner Yanni (by Pennekamp). You would think with this pedigree that he has been difficult to train as you would think he would have run on the flat, however their loss is jumping game and he may be one to note with next season in mind.
FUNDAMENTALIST
b, g. Supreme Leader - Run For Shelter
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Nigel Twiston-Davies
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- With their stable doing so well this term, it makes sense to note one from Nigel Twiston-Davies´ yard and it would seem to be worth looking for Fundamentalist in bumpers during the remainder of the season, especially as he withdrawn from the Grade two Letheby & Christopher "Championship" Stakes Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race at Chepstow ´s Welsh Grand National meeting. He is bred to be useful being by Supreme Leader out of Run For Shelter, [a daughter of Strong Gale], who has produced winners over obstacles, and has won three point-to-points in Ireland last year, at Stradbally, Ballingarry and most recently at Templemore where he won a "winners of two" race by 2lengths from Mr. Shush. He is clearly useful and is worth noting if he's entered in similar events before the end of the season.
GLOBAL CHALLENGE
b, g. Sadler´s Wells (USA) - Middle Prospect (USA)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Jonjo O´Neill
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Global Challenge is an interesting recruit to jumping .. if he stays sound. This five-year-old son of Sadler´s Wells has missed a lot of racing, after suffering a hairline crack on the cannon-bone, however he showed plenty of ability for Sir Michael Stoute, winning two o f his six starts, most recently when beating It´s The Limit and Red Wine in a Classified Stakes at Newmarket in May ´03. He won off of a mark of 94 on the level and is sure to have been well schooled.. it´ll be interesting to see how he gets on during the remainder of the season.
GOLDEN REWARD (SAF)
ro, g. Goldmark (SAF) - Enticement (SAF)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Venetia Williams
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Golden Reward has been one of the hardest horses to find information on we´ve ever experienced, however I did manage to find out that he ran 23times in South Africa, winning on 6 occasions, as well as finding placed on five further occasions ans was rated 88 in South Africa´s Merit Ratings last December, [compared to Ipi Tombe ´s mark of 108]. Can´t tell you much more that this... We´ll definitely have to watch out for him.. Won´t we!!!.
JANBRE
br, g Zaffaran (USA) - Black Gayle
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Michael Scudamore
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Michael Scudamore introduced Janbre at Towcester on 26/12/03 in their bumper race on that card and despite going on relative unfancied at around 10/1, ran really well, settling nicely before staying on strongly in the final four furlongs, eventually getting within 1¼lengths of the winner; Lazerito. Quite what this form amounts too isn´t clear, however that look to be plenty of improvement to come from him and it wouldn´t be the greatest surprise if he went into the winners´ enclosure before the end of the season.
KOÇEANE (FR)
gr, m. Royal Charter (FR) - Amanda De La Motte (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Koçeane will shortly embark of career over obstacles in this country. This six-year-old mare by Royal Charter, out of Amanda De La Motte, (a daughter of Italic), was formerly trained in France by Jack Barbe, winning two of her last six start; An A.Q.P.S. Flat race at Le Pin Du Horas in October, where she beat Kami d´Allaïre by 3lengths, and her only recent attempt over obstacles, at Vire in June, where she easily won the Prix Jurques Haies over 3,800m beating Pair Impair, [who had previous won two of her four last completed starts - and finished second in the other two]. This is exactly the sort of horse Nicholashayne do well with and assuming she has been given ample time to acclimatise it wouldn´t surprise me if she didn´t prove capable of winning races this season.
KOLORADO (POL)
b, g. Enjoy Plan (USA) - Kaliformia (POL)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Olehla Cestmír in the Czech Republic
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Kolorado is a another horse from the Eastern Bloc that we feel merits a mention. This four-year-old gelding by Enjoy Plan, [out of a daughter of Lord Hippo], ran seven times last term in Czech Republic, showing a little promise on his only start on the flat before running six times over obstacles, w inning his last three starts, the Cena Autoplusu II S III, over 3200m at Most in July, as well as the Cena a.s. KonekTel H III at Pardubice in September and the Cena Canaba a.s. H I at the same venue a month later. He is clearly going the right way and should be capable of adding to that tally before the end of the season.
KOURNÍKOVÁ (SAF)
b, m. Sportsworld (USA) - Faberge Flowers (SAF)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [Not Known]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Kourníková is a five-year-old by Sportsworld, out of Faberge Flowers, (a daughter of Russian Fox), she has been purchased to race in this country, having shown form in some of South Africa premier Handicaps. winning 5 of her 20 starts including in 2001 the Triple Tiara 1600 (1600m), [gr,1] and a year later the Drum Star Stakes (2000m), (Listed Race) and well as the following places;
2002 2nd Gerald Rosenberg Stakes (2000m), [gr.2]
2002 2nd The Sledgehammer (1800m), [Listed-Race]
2002 2nd Durban Africa 2200 (Listed) (2200m),
2001 3rd Sa Fillies Classic (1800m), [gr.2]
2001 4th S. A. Oaks (2450m), [gr.2]
2002 4th Spring Challenge (1600m), [gr.2]
2002 4th Summer Cup (2000m), [gr.1]
She has potential, and it´ll be interesting to see how she is campaigned during the remainder of the season.
LATITUDE (FR)
b, m. Kadalko (FR) - Diyala Iii (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- The cheque-book appears to have been taken on with a vengeance at Nicholashayne as amongst their recent autumn purchases is Latitude, a five-year-old mare by Kadalko, out of Diyala Iii, (a daughter of Quart De Vin). Formerly trained in France by Thierry Civel, Latitude has had a successful career in France ever since winning the Prix Finot (Pouliches) Haies, [a maiden juveniles hurdles which tends to attract the better hurdling prospects] at Auteuil in November ´02. She wasn´t able to beat the best hurdlers at four and has been campaigned this term over fences, beating Look Collonges , [a winner at Warwick since], in the Prix Ginetta II Steeple-CH´. at Auteuil in June ´03, before meeting a tartar in the form of Prince Des Ifs, [arguably the best four-year-old chaser seen in the Autumn of 2003], in the Prix Gelas Steeple-CH´. again at Auteuil in October, being beaten far easier than the 7lengths margin reflected. She took her chance in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase des 4 Ans (Grade 1), at Auteuil in November, however was already struggling in the deep ground when falling at halfway. She is interesting, considering she gets all of the availing allowances, [sex and weight], and if she takes to our fences/way of racing, could definitely be interesting in conditions events towards the end of the season.
LE BIASSÏAS (FR)
b, g. Passing Sale (FR) - Petite Fanfan (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Lenny Lungo
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Lenny Lungo is having a quiet time of late, however he has raced some promising sorts of late including Le Biassïas, who caught the eye on his debut at Wetherby on 06/04/04. This five-year-old son of Passing Sale, was held up initially before making steady headway throughout the final half-mile, eventually finishing tenth to Premier First, [btn. 15lengths]. This was a solid introduction which should bring him on for the remainder of the campaign
LEONARDO DE VINCI
b, c. Sadler´s Wells (USA) - Andromaque (USA)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Edward O´Grady in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Leonardo De Vinci is a four-year-old by Sadler´s Wells, out of Andromaque, [a daughter of Woodman, who was a high-class performer at up to 10f, winning five times over a mile], which makes him a half-brother to Seyooll (by Danehill), who was placed four times over 8-11.5f. He made his hurdles debut at Punchestown on 31/12/04, and immediately improved markedly on the form shown when trained by Kevin Ryan in the UK, travelling in behind the leaders until improving his position to be second over the second last. He couldn´t improve his position and weakened thereafter, but was only beaten 4lengths by the winner Colmcille, and whilst this may not be the greatest level of form it is good enough to land similar events before the end of the season.
MAGESTÚEÙ (FR)
ch, g. Espirit Du Nord (USA) - Saturbaine (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Jean-Paul Totain in France
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I thought I´d add a few horses from the meetings broadcast on Attheraces from Pau because this venue, since it has been a regular source for British-trained winner over recent years. If you were watching on 04/01/2004, you could not fail to be impressed with Magestúeù, who won a novice hurdle at Pau, on his second-ever start, after having shown plenty of promise in the Prix De Lacq, [a non-thoroughbred flat race over 2,400meters in December. This horse has pace as well as bags of scope and you´d be surprised if he didn´t build on that during the rest of the spring cards at Pau although I will be amazed if some interest in him wasn´t shown by British trainers
MRAZÍK
b, h. Noble Law - Marseille
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Stanislav Popelka in the Czech Republic
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrazík is another Czech-bred we´ll be monitoring in 2004. This seven-year-old by Noble Law, who is on the comeback trail after missing eighteen months due to injury. Before this he won seven of his sixteen starts in the Czech Republic, including in 1991; the Cena Fotostudio Štepán Bartoš Steeple-CH´. [IV] over 3,300m at Pardubice, the Cena Spolecností FREE ZONE Steeple-CH´. [II] over the same course and distance and the Cena Spolecností A.S.A. s.r.o. Steeple-CH´. [II] over 4400m. He ran once last term in the Cena Itálie Steeple-CH´. [II] at Pardubice in May, finishing a well-beaten fifth to Sharpo Focus, however if he hasn´t had any adverse effect to this may well get back onto winning ways... we shall see.
PAPILLON DE IENA (FR)
ch, g. Varese (FR) - Belle du Chesne (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Papillon De Iena is a four-year-old gelding by the French Sire Varese, out of a R B Chesne mare, made an encouraging effort at Folkestone on 16/12/03, travelling sweetly amongst the front-runners until he was well outpaced by the winner Lord Lington after the second last, eventually finishing 11½lengths behind the winner. That would be good enough to win a minor event, particularly if tried locally and I will be disappointed if this proved to be best we see of him this season.
PICCINI (FR)
ch, g. Sillery (USA) - Emblem (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Piccini is a four-year-old gelding by Sillery, out of a Siberian Express mare, who was formerly owned in France by Alex Head. He hasn´t at the time of writing made it to the racecourse, however he has a nice pedigree and could be worth noting in bumpers before the end of the season.
POINTALISM
br, g. Roselier (FR) - Ballinahowna Dream
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Henrietta Knight
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Pointalism is a five-year-old by Roselier, out of the mare Ballinahowna Dream, [a daughter of Treasure Kay], who joined Henrietta Knight´s yard after winning his only start, a four-year-old maiden point-to-point by ½Length from Eisenhower at Dromohane in April ´03. Connections haven´t rushed him and he will be worth noting when he appears in bumpers before the end of the season.
SHAYRANDAR
b, h. Spectrum - Shayraz
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--M J P O´Brien
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Aga Khan castoff Shayrandar caught the eye amongst the entries for the weekends´ cards at Leopardstown. This four-year-old son of Spectrum of Shayraz, [a daughter of Darshaan], has an abundance of stamina in his pedigree, and you´d think if connections look after him during the remainder of the season, this entire will repay this kindness next term in staying novice hurdles... Look for signs of ability before the end term.
SILVER INNGOT
gr, g. Gothland (FR) - Hotel Saltees
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Robert H Alner
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Silver Inngot joins the new feature after an encouraging debut effort at Exeter on 18/12/03, where despite being completely unconsidered at 66/1, he ran really well, staying on nicely in the last mile to get within 7lengths of the winner Melford and dual-winner Nathos. This son of Gothland is still physically developing, however as long as this doesn´t inhibit his progression there is hope for him, maybe even before the end of the season.
STARSHIPENTERPRISE
br, g. The Star Of Orion VII - Lequest
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- L. Wells
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Although he has the most dubious looking pedigree, {being a son of The Star Of Orion VII, [?!!], out of a Lequest, a daughter of the German sire Lepanto}, and having finished completely tailed off on his racecourse debut at Plumpton on 04/04/04, [btn. 51lengths]. I though there was plenty to like about this six-year-old, whose greenness completely got the better of him. I´m not suggesting that he´ll win next time, however this raw shell has very much the look of a chaser, and were he to show some promise in the remaining four months of the season, he is the sort of horse that could improve from oblivion to land novice chases, [he would be even more interesting if he went pointing]... Lets hope I´m not left with eggs firmly over the face.
TANNER´S COURT
br, g. Framlington Court - True Nell
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Miss C Dyson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Tanner´s Court is given a chance to shine, however it may be until the end of term/Summer campaign ´04/´05 before this choice behind to bear fruit. Claire Dyson is very good at keeping her lesser lights sweet and she has built on her third to Back to Ben Alder ar Kempton on 27/02/03, to run creditably on his last two starts, when coming third to Patriach Express at Haydock and most recently when fifth to Trabolgan at Ascot on 19/12/03, where this combination led until weakening approaching two out. This huge six-year-old son of Framlington Court is still develops into his frame, however he will come to himself probably within the next 18months and it wouldn´t surprise this team if he were to get his head in front.
TÍR AU PIGEON (FR)
b, g. Kizitca (FR) - Targerine (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Bert De Watrigant in France
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--If you were watching racing from Pau on 04/01/2004, you would have seen Tír Au Pigeon land the opening Prix d´Ossau Steeple-CH´. [claimer] by 1½lengths from Great Day. Considering that this was over his second racecourse appearance, [he was fifth, a long way behind Cybormania in a conditions chase again at Pau on his debut in December], you would have to believe that there was plenty of scope for further development, so it will be interesting to see how he progresses through the rest of this term.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices' Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.
Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with "A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27 days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he'd have been an excellent eachway wager}.
¦THE WINNER?¦:¬ Mount Gay,
¦2nd place? ¦:¬ Misty Ridge,
¦3rd place? ¦:¬ Ashgar [USA],

Mount Gay obliged at odds of 7/1.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 20th July
Tote Scoop6 Summer Plate. (H´cap. Steeple Ch.). £65000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f, 16 runners.
"As much as I like Demasta, there is so much pace here, that I cant help but think that the front runners may go too fast for their own good here. It makes sense [in my view], to be looking for something likely to be able to travel well... and despite my very negative comments above... I have (since the runners were declared), had a lot of time for the chance of Chicuelo (at eachway odds). I think some horses suit certain trainers, and I think this horse has a better chance of winning a race like this with Martin Pipe than Ian Williams - not because I necessarily think Pipe is a far better trainer than Williams is... its more to do with understanding this type of horse. Nicholashayne - more than most training establishments - does particularly with their foreign purchases. I think this is in part because due to the amount of time/effort they have invested into studying not only French form, but also how certain trainers educate their young horses - adopting if/when necessary previous regime/style of training. Secondly, (more importantly), some French breds improve after a season's acclimatization. A look at this horse's form in France and you'll find, for example, his good third to Sleeping Night and Ilnamar (beaten 8½lengths) in the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Grade 3) , or his third to Sleeping Night and Douze Douze in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase Des 4 Ans (Chase) (Grade 1) in November 2000. He has certainly been given a chance here off of only a handicap rating of 116, and I can't see him not finishing in the first four.... He'll do for me".
