Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

NEWCASTLE
Saturday, June 29th 2002
¦ 1° NEWCASTLE ¦ ¬> John Smith's Extra Smooth Chip Chase Stakes (Group 3) £35000 added, 3yo plus, 6f, penalty £20300, 8 runners.
¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦<at>±<the>±<post>¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Eight closely matched sprinters line up for the opener on this eight- race card. Of these INDIAN SPARK, [only 4lengths behind Dominica in teh Kings Stands Stakes at Royal Ascot], VISION OF NIGHT (7th) and MISRAAH (9th), [who ran respectably behind Malhub in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, as at the Royal Meeting], JUST JAMES, [who stayed on strongly to land the Jersey Stakes (Group 3)] and MARIKA [who stayed on strongly under pressure, to beat Palace Affair at Haydock], make most appeal... I doubt there will much to choose these three, however Marika just is preferred
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Marika
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Just James
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Vision of Night

¦ 2° NEWCASTLE ¦ ¬> Tote Scoop6 Northern Sprint H 'cap Stakes £30000 added, 3yo plus, 6f, penalty £19500, 18 runners.
¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦<at>±<the>±<post>¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Manorbier, Onlytime Will Tell, Surprised, Undeterred, Telesto, Forever Times, Night Flight, Soba Jones, Armagnac, Carlton, Carrie Pooter, Ragamuffin, and Tayif, are amongst those with chances in a fiercely competitive handicap sprint which comes next. I cant profess to having a particularly strong view on any of these, however TELESTO is better than the bare form shown last time out, and is still one of a few in this race capable of further improvement.... he may not be a great price, however I don't think he'll be far away if he gets the run of the race. He is the selection. Soba Jones who has been in good heart of the Scottish circuit, and Onlytime Will Tell, who ran well at Royal Ascot represent good eachway alternatives
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Telesto (USA)
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Soba Jones, (e/w)
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Onlytime Will Tell,

¦ 3° NEWCASTLE ¦ ¬> Foster's Lager Northumberland Plate Showcase H 'cap £140000 added, 3yo plus, 2m 19yds, penalty £98571, 16 runners.
¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦<at>±<the>±<post>¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>ARCHDUKE FERDINAND [ a good second to Cover Up at in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot last week], FANTASY HILL [ second to Rainbow High in teh Chester Cup], BANGALORE; [who recently beat Greenhope at won at Kempton ], TRAVELMATE, [who made an encouraging reappearance behind Island House at Leicester], RIYADH, [A lazy individual who Kieran Fallon stoked up to withhold the late challenge of Establishment in teh Ascot Stakes at the Royal Meeting, MR DINOS, [who beat all bar Mamool in the Queens Vase (gr.3) at the Royal Meeting], FATEHALKHAIR, [this decent hurdler/chaser has conditions to suit and goes well on teh track], and WINTERTIDE, [unlucky in running behind Riyadh at Ascot] all appeal to me in the latest renewal of the "Pitmen's Derby". Mr Dinos' claim are obvious and I'm sure he'll go close however Riyadh appeals more... he definitely is a horse that saves a little bit for himself, and when push comes to shove here, he may out-battle the well treated three year old. Those looking for something to run well at double figure odds, could do a lot worse than side with Travelmate, already boasting a good effort in this race, and Fatehalkhair, who may be good enough to nick a place
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Riyadh
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Mr Dinos
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Fatehalkhair

¦ 4° NEWCASTLE ¦ ¬> European Breeders Fund [E.B.F.] Hoppings Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) £25000 added, 3yo plus fillies, 1m 2f 32yds, penalty £15109, 7 runners.
¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦<at>±<the>±<post>¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Esloob, Half Glance, Lady High Havens, Frosty Welcome, and Threefold, look best of those lining up for race four. Half Glance and Esloob (on their form in the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket last month), or Lady High Havens (on her Coronation Stakes form with Sophisticat) are the likeliest to score, however THREEFOLD didn't run too badly behind Succinct at Newbury sixteen days ago, and it wouldnt surprise me if she got into the first three ... it is a real shame there are only seven runners, as she'd be a great eachway punt here .... I think she could score, however the "sensible/logical" choice here in my view is ESLOOB who is better than the form shown in the Oaks .....
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Esloob
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Threefold, (e/w)
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Lady High Haven

¦ 5° NEWCASTLE ¦ ¬> European Breeders Fund [E.B.F.] /Cantor Sport 'Spread Free' Maiden Stakes £10000 added, 2yo only, 6f, penalty £6776.25, 10 runners.
¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦<at>±<the>±<post>¦¤±±±±±±±±±¤¦
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>CUMBRIAN VENTURE, who stayed on at the same pace to finish second to Winisk River at York two weeks ago looks to be the obvious choice in race five, however he after finishing in the frame in his last three starts, he does appear to be relatively exposed, and it wouldnt be the greatest surprise if one of the newcomers didn't prove to be too good again. MURTAKEZ; [a son of Alhaarth, out of an unraced half-sister to top-class fillies Maximova (at 2 and 3 over 6-8f), Navratilovna (8f) and Vilikaia] and WILFUL [a son of Bering, out of Prickwillow - a winner over 10f]. make plenty of appeal on paper and could be better than him in time ..... MURTAKEZ is probably worth chancing
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Murtakez
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Cumbrian Venture
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Wilful

¦ 6° NEWCASTLE ¦ ¬> Journal 'Good Morning' H 'cap £20000 added, 3yo plus, 7f, penalty £14072.50, 18 runners.

¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Rudik, (e/w)
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Mine,

¦ 7° NEWCASTLE ¦ ¬> Kronenbourg 1664 Maiden Stakes £10000 added, 3yo plus, 1m, penalty £6808.75, 5 runners.

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.

Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
