OAKS D'ITALIA {Gr.1} -

Analysis & Selections by .i.l. r.o.o.k. - Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; [¹ NØ.1 CHOICE], as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; [²E/W ALTERNATIVE] . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

Milano
Domenica 19 Maggio
Sunday, May 19th 2002
15.00 - Premio Miss Gris - (2000 m 22000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Eight runners line up for the opener on the card... Of these, Skinny Bone (who won a conditions event in December at Pisa, but who has been well beaten since), Flaming Wings (second in a conditions event over 1800m here in April, and Sfiziosa (a winner here last time out over 1700m) make most appeal ... Flaming Wings is just preferred
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Flaming Wings
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Sfiziosa
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Skinny Bone

15.30 - Premio Cesare Degli Occhi - (1600 m 38500 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>The second race on the card a mile event for fillies, could hold clues to the big race later on in the day as Bel Sweet , Frezza , Glestra , Kitty Girl ,Libata, Rentless and Silvia Diletta all have form with the main home challengers for the Oaks D'Italia.... Rentless, who finished third to Rosa Delle Alpi on her last start over course and distance is just preferred to Kitty Girl and Libata
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬> Rentless
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Kitty Girl
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Libata

16.00 - Premio Oriano - (1200 m 33000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>A sprint comes next on the card.... Dark Dancer (A consistent sprinter , who has finished second on his last three starts), Royal Rhapsody (who took on 1000 Guineas winner Sadowa last time out at Milano, Secrete Marina (who on his latest start, chased home Slap Shot, who won last weekend at Longchamp) and Sopran Vistor (well beaten last time by Oh Bej Oh Bej .. but that's no disgrace) look to be the main protagonists .... Secrete Marina's form looks solid and she gets the vote
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Secrete Marina
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Sopran Vistor
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Royal Rhapsody

16.30 - Premio Emilio Turati - {Group.2} (1600 m 170390 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Paul Cole's Cornelius, who chased home Keltos on his latest start at Saint Cloud has strong claims in this Group Two event on a mile. Up against him are last season's Italian 2000 Guineas winner Giovane Imperatore, (who is already a winner this term at Roma), German raiders Up and Away and Pardus (the mount on Kieran Fallon, who chased home Giovane Imperatore, when they met last November) and Lugny from France. I'm sure Cornelius will go close here however Giovane Imperatore who didn't get the race run to suit last time out here in April is just preferred.
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Giovane Imperatore,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Cornelius,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Pardus

17.00 - Premio Salerano - (1600 m 13200 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>The race before the big one makes little appeal... for what's its worth. Golasecca, (who has won twice already this season, nut who disapointed last time out at Roma), plus Gentle Dig, Sorokina, Blu Venice and Penny Groom who have been regular adversaries this term make most appeal ...Gentle Dig who came out on top last time they met at Milano at the beginning of April is just preferred
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Gentle Dig
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Penny Groom
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Golasecca,

17.30 - OAKS D'ITALIA - {Group.1} (2200 m 440000 Euro)

Nº6 - Isla Mauritia (56kg)
Nº7 - Midnight Angel (56kg)
Nº8 - Nashwan Rose (56kg)
Nº9 - Oropa (56kg)
Nº10 - Plaza (56kg)
Nº11 - Queen Shy (56kg)
Nº12 - Ravanello (56kg)
Nº13 - Rosa Delle Alpi (56kg)
Nº14 - Sadowa (56kg)
Nº15 - Sopran Woomari (56kg)
Nº16 - Sweetsoutherngirl (56kg)
Nº17 - Ticket To Dance (56kg)
Nº18 - Turturilla* (56kg)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>An international line-up for the 3rd classic of the year in Italy which has attracted runners from England, Ireland, Germany and, of course, the home team. The "away team" consists of Bright And Clear (from Barry Hill's yard) who ran respectably in the Cheshire Oaks finishing a close 2nd to the winner Shadow Dancing and Ticket To Dance (from John Gosden's yard) who is visored for the first time. She looks up against it here and if there is to be a UK winner it'll definitely be from Lambourn. Dermot Weld's Nashwan Rose is the sole Irish runner, however, she will probably need to improve on her cosy Clonmel win to figure prominently here. Germany is represented by two fillies: Midnight Angel and Guadeloupe who both come here on the back of wins at Muelheim-Ruhr and Hoppegarten respectively. Kieran Fallon's booking for Guadeloupe naturally attracts the eye, and you'd expect that this filly would give a good account of herself here... (although she will need to have improve on efforts last term in Italy). They are going to meet stern opposition though from Sadowa who took the Italian 1000 Guineas on her last start beating Sweetsoutherngirl by 1/2 length with Rosa Delle Alpi, Sopran Woomair and Clefairy and Oropa all behind her (who all re-oppose her to today). Sweetsoutherngirl and Rosa Delle Alpi both gave me the impression that they would appreciate a step-up in trip so it wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't much to choose between these three, although there is a slight question mark about all of them at this trip. Others to consider from the "home team" are Bianca Maria who won a conditions event at Roma three weeks ago, and Queen Shy who is on a hatrick after victories here twice on 2100m... Difficult not to see Bright And Clear getting into th frame, She is the likeliest winners, however a sporting wager on Rosa Delle Alpi (who was finishing strongly in the 1000 Guineas and strong place claims if she stays) is advised
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Rosa Delle Alpi [U.S.A.], (e/w)
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Bright And Clear
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Sweetsoutherngirl

Two well contested handicaps end the card.

18.00 - Premio Busto Garolfo - (1700 m 22000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>In the first of these, Mano Gialla going for his third win of the year can make good use of his lightweight in the Premio Busto Garolfo. Agua Caliente (a good second here over a mile last time out) , and Canoa Quebrada (who ran well over course and distance two weeks ago) look the main dangers.
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬> Mano Gialla
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Agua Caliente
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Canoa Quebrada

18.30 - Premio Dei Tre Anni - (2000 m 38500 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Whilst in the last on the card. Bath And Wells, Altinada, Il Bimbo De Oro, Shevchenko, Sognare In Paris and Rapid Tiger (who are all recent winners) look the best of the nineteen due to line up ..Sognare In Paris fourth to Rapid Tiger on his last start, can make best of his lightweight here.
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Sognare In Paris
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Bath And Wells,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Shevchenko,

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.
Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
