"One to jump 2003"

Horses to follow for the 2002/2003 National Hunt Season by

  .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

BUMPER HORSES

(Three-Year-Olds)
( 1 )¯¯ CONROY :¬>-
b, g. Greensmith - Highland Spirit
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Frank Jordan
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- One of the late entrants in the list, Conroy makes this list by virtue of a promising effort in an E.B.F. 'Junior' Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race earlier in the week at Newbury on Wednesday, where he travelled sweetly on the outside of field before staying on at one pace to finish fourth, only 10lengths behind the winner Enitsag. This experience will do win the world of good and he could be capable of winning a similar event before the end of the season.

( 2 )¯¯ DOM BEYSSAC (FR) :¬>-
gr, g. Beyssac - Lessons in Love
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Venetia Williams
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-I noted that Venetia Williams bought this grey son of Beyssac at GOFFS France's July sale. He is unraced and is more likely to appear in a bumper next year than over hurdles.... hopefully he'll show some promise in that sphere.

( 3 )¯¯ LOUP (FR) :¬>-
b, c. Cyborg (FR) - Quintessence (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- François Doumen in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-I've been waiting for this one to appear since purchasing the '01 version of Horses in Training. Loup is a full-brother to Hors La Loi III, and showed plenty of promise in an AQPS Flat race at Fontainebleau finishing second. Hopefully he can go on to win a race or two on the level this term before going onto better things next season.

( 4 )¯¯ LYS D'ESTRUVAL (FR) :¬>- ,
b, g. Lute Antique - Ruse d'Estruval (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Venetia Williams
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Lys D'Estruval is an unraced son of Lute Antique who was bought by Venetia Williams at GOFFS' summer sale in July. He has a chaser's pedigree so I doubt that he'll be rush this term - look out for him in a bumper next year.

( 5 )¯¯ MILLE ET UNE NUITS (FR) :¬>-
b, f. Ecologist - Migre (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Miss Kelly Marks
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Mille Et Une Nuits is an unraced daughter of Ecologist out of a dam who has produced nine winning foals including Group win or placed runners in GB, France and Italy. Arguably she is too valuable to race, however a win, even of a minor event would increase her value, so it would be no surprise to see her attempt this goal (probably in a bumper this season).

( 6 )¯¯ SPANISH (FR) :¬>-
br, c. Rahotep (FR) - Irune (SPA)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Guilliame Macaire
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Spanish could be a nice bumper horse for later on in the season. He is a son of Prix Hoequart winner Rahotep, out of Irune, a winner three times in her native Spain. He was purchased at the recent GOFFS Horses in Training Sale and hopefully will show plenty of promise once he's makes it to the racecourse.

(Four-Year-Olds & Upwards)
( 7 )¯¯ BACK TO BEN ALDER:¬>-
br, g. Bob Back (U.S.A.) - Winter Fox
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Back To Ben Alder is an unraced five-year-old gelding by Bob Back who is related to winners over jumps. He should make his presence felt in bumpers this winter.

( 8 )¯¯ BOURBON MANHATTAN :¬>-
b, g. Alflora - Vanina II (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Bourbon Manhattan is at the time of writing an unraced four-year-old son of Alflora, who showed connections plenty of promise at home last term, however they were unable to get him onto the racecourse. He should do well over hurdles after gaining a bit of experience in bumpers..

( 9 )¯¯ BUDDHI :¬>-
b, g. Be My Native (U.S.A.) - Paean Express
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Buddhi is one of Mark Pitman's more promising four-year-olds. He is a son of Be My Native and at the time out writing is unraced. Like so many in this list, he is an embryonic chaser in the making and won't be over raced this winter.

( 10 )¯¯ COOK O'HAWICK :¬>-
b, g. King's Ride - Miner's Yank
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Cook O'Hawick is an attractively bred five-year-old son of King's Ride who related to winners over hurdles. He should give Ashleybank Investments Limited some fun in bumpers this winter

( 11 )¯¯ CORNISH REBEL:¬>-
b, g. Un Desperado (FR) - Katday
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Paul F Nicholls
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Cornish Rebel is an unraced full-brother to Best Mate, who I seem to remember cost connections a lot of money at one of the major sales. Clearly chasing will be his forte however I'd like to think he can show promise initially over hurdles.

( 12 )¯¯ DEMPSEY
b, g .Lord Americo - Kyle Cailin
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Dempsey is one of Mark Pitman's more promising bumpers for this season This four-year-old gelding is a full brother to Puget Blue, and has been pleasing connections at home. He is definitely one to look out for during the remainder of the season.

( 13 )¯¯ EVER AN OPTIMIST :¬>-
b, g. Alflora - Sweet Optimist
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henry Daly
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Ever An Optimist could make his presence felt in bumpers this winter. This five-year-old son of Alflora is related to winners over obstacles and should gain some experience this season over jumps

( 14 )¯¯ FIDÈLE GALOPIN (FR)
b, g. Comte du Bourg (FR) - Buff Beauty (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Willie P Mullins'
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Fidèle Galopin is another unraced four-year-old by the Group two winning sire Comte du Bourg, out of a dam who was placed over obstacles, Fidèle Galopin was bought at the '01 GOFFS France Horses-in-Training sale and is a horse to look out for in bumpers this winter

( 15 )¯¯ IRONMAN MULDOON
gr, g. Roselier (FR) - Darjoy
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- There are some well bred individuals in this list and one of them Ironman Muldoon looks to be one to look out for with a long term view in mind. This five-year-old gelding is a full-brother to Royal Athlete and apparently looks every inch a chaser. Being by Roselier he is unlikely to come to hand early on and will worth watching out for during the second half of this campaign.

( 16 )¯¯ JACK POT II (FR) :¬>-
ch, g, Luchiroverte (FR) - Roxane II (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo ,
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Jack Pot Ii, is at the time of writing, is an unraced five-year-old gelding, who cost Ashleybank Investments 32,000.00 guineas at the Doncaster May sale. He is likely to have been sent to one of their northern trainers, and is likely to be seen on a racecourse during the second half of the season.

( 17 )¯¯ KARACHI (FR) :¬>-
Br, g. Iris Noir (FR) - Eclipse Royale II (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Karachi is an unraced four-year-old of the sire Iris Noir who is related to numerous winners in France over obstacles. He was bought by connections for 26,000gns at Doncaster's spring sale and should hopefully be able to find a bumper on the Northern Circuit before going onto better things next term.

( 18 )¯¯ KEEP ON RUNNING (FR) :¬>-
ch, g. Beyssac (FR) - Kiruna V (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Keep On Running is an unraced gelding by the French sire Beyssac, who was well thought of by Robert Alner last season though didn't make t to the racecourse. He is now in training with Alan King and goes novice hurdling... I'd be hopeful of him showing me some promise before the end of the season.

( 19 )¯¯ KEPI SACRE (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Iris Noir (FR) - Viva Sacree (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- ()
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Kepi Sacre is a four-year-old gelding by Iris Noir out of Viva Sacree, who raced on the flat and over jumps without success, however has produced Iowa Sacree, who has won five races in France (on the flat and over obstacles). He was purchased for 15,000gns at the Doncaster Bloodstock Sale in May and so far hasn't raced. Hopefully he'll show some promise this winter.

( 20 )¯¯ KIMONO ROYAL (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Guard Royale - Alizane (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Kimono Royal is at the time of writing an unraced four-year-old son of Guard Royal out of a mare who has produced winners over jumps in France and Italy. He was bought for 41,000 gns at Doncaster sales in May and could be worth noting for in a bumper at some stage this season.

( 21 )¯¯ KRZYSZKOWIAK :¬>-
b, g. Polish Precedent (U.S.A.) - Overdrive
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- C R Egerton
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Krzyszkowiak is a four-year-old son of Polish Precedent, who at the time or writing hasn't raced, (although I'm seem to remember him being declared on the flat, so he may be stalls-shy). He is nicely bred and he would be very interesting against more stoutly breds stores horses in a bumper.

( 22 )¯¯ LISA DU CHENET (FR) :¬>-
b, f. Guard Royal - Tchela (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- ()
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Lisa Du Chenet is another well-bred newcomer in this section as she is a full sister to Iris Royal (the winner of four races over hurdles for Nicky Henderson) as well as being related to five other winners including Galant Moss ( a winner for Martin Pipe in both this country and more recently in France). She was bought for 42,000 gns at Doncaster spring sales and connections will be particularly keen to get a win out of her.

( 23 )¯¯ LOUGH RYNN:¬>-
b, g. Beneficial - Liffey Lady
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henrietta Knight
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Lough Rynn is a four-year-old gelding by Beneficial, who is a half-brother to Yeoman Sailor, he's reportedly been showing plenty of ability on the gallops, so should do well in bumper this winter.

( 24 )¯¯ MASTEROFFOXHOUNDS :¬>-
br, g. . Be My Native (U.S.A.) - Sylvia Fox
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- A P O´Brien
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-I was very interested to note that Masteroffoxhounds is still in the care of Aiden O'Brien. This attractive son of Be My Native, must have some ability to be housed there and I will be interested to watched how he is placed with interest.

( 25 )¯¯ PATRICK'S NINETEENTH:¬>-
ch, g Mister Lord (U.S.A.)- Many Miracles
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Paul Webber
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Patrick's Nineteenth is a lovely four-year-old gelding. Bought from Ireland by Paul Webber, I like what I've seen so far, and I'll be interested to see how he fares in bumper this winter

( 26 )¯¯ ROUGE ET NOIR :¬>-
b, g. Hernando (FR) - Bayrouge
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mary Reveley
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Rouge et Noir is an interesting prospect for this season. His breeder clearly had a flat career in mind for him, as both Hernando and Bayrouge were group over middle distances... clearly however he has taken a awhile to come to hand and that means he is eligible to race in bumpers... unless he fails to stay I'd be amazed if he didn't land one this season.

( 27 )¯¯ ROYAL ALPHABET :¬>-
b, g. King's Theatre - A-To-Z
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Willie P Mullins in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Royal Alphabet is one of several decent prospects that Willie Mullins has in the "bumper" division. He has had a race staying on really strongly to land a 26-runner event at Galway. Connections are talking about the Cheltenham bumper with him... that may be a bit premature however I'd be disappointed if he wasn't capable of building on this promising effort.

( 28 )¯¯ ROYAL ENGLAND (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Cadoudal (FR) - Leonie Des Champs (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Royal England is a three-year-old full brother to Royal Auguin, a winner so far of two races in France as well as Cadou Royal (a winner last season for Arthur Moore) as well as being related to five other winners in France. He was bought for 38,000gns at Doncaster spring sales and should make his presence felt in bumpers in the second half of the season.

( 29 )¯¯ SAMUEL CHARLES:¬>-
b, g. Green Desert (U.S.A.) - Hejraan (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Miss Venetia Williams
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- It'll be odd to see Samuel Charles running over jumps this winter, as you dont usually associate Green Desert's progeny running in this discipline. Clearly this four-year-old old has been slow to come to hand .. which probably explains why Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum waved "au Revoir" to him last term. I'm interested that Venetia Williams has got him as she clearly believes that she can get a win out of him... we shall see.

( 30 )¯¯ SECRET DES CŒURS, (FR), :¬>-
b, g. Sleeping Car (FR) - Djebel Mik (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- ()
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Secret des Cœurs, at the time of writing is unraced son of Sleeping Car, out of Djebel Mik (who won eleven races and was placed on sixteen occasions). He was another purchase from GOFFS who is worth watching out for in a bumper this term.

( 31 )¯¯ SIXO :¬>-
gr, g. Roselier (FR) - Miss Mangaroo
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Sixo, a five-year-old gelding by Roselier, is at the time of writing unraced. His dam however was a winning hurdler and so connections are obviously hoping that he will show some promise this season.

( 32 )¯¯ TI PUNCH :¬>-
b, g. Jupiter Island - Caipiriunha
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- TI Punch is a four-year-old by Jupiter Island , out of a winning mare. Connection like him so lets see how he gets on in bumpers in the spring.

( 33 )¯¯ VICTORIA STONE :¬>-
b, m. Old Vic - Lampstone
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Victoria Stone is an unraced half-sister by Old Vic to winning chaser Hurricane Lamp. She is still too pleasing connections and may appear in a bumper during the second half of the season.... Hopefully she'll show some promise for next season.

( 34 )¯¯ WELCOME ATTRACTION:¬>-
ch, g. Most Welcome - Canoodle
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Willie P Mullins in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Welcome Attraction is an unraced five-year-old gelding by Most Welcome who is pleasing connections at home . Hopefully he can show some promise bumpers this winter,

Success Stories

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices' Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.
Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with "A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27 days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he'd have been an excellent eachway wager}.
¦ 1er. - THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Mount Gay,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Misty Ridge,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Ashgar [USA],

Mount Gay obliged at odds of 7/1.
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 20th July
Tote Scoop6 Summer Plate. (H'cap Steeple Ch.). £65000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f, 16 runners.
"As much as I like Demasta, there is so much pace here, that I cant help but think that the front runners may go too fast for their own good here. It makes sense [in my view], to be looking for something likely to be able to travel well... and despite my very negative comments above... I have (since the runners were declared), had a lot of time for the chance of Chicuelo (at eachway odds). I think some horses suit certain trainers, and I think this horse has a better chance of winning a race like this with Martin Pipe than Ian Williams - not because I necessarily think Pipe is a far better trainer than Williams is... its more to do with understanding this type of horse. Nicholashayne - more than most training establishments - does particularly with their foreign purchases. I think this is in part because due to the amount of time/effort they have invested into studying not only french form, but also how certain trainers educate their young horses - adopting if/when necessary previous regime/style of training. Secondly, (more importantly), some french breds improve after a season's acclimatization. A look at this horse's form in France and you'll find, for example, his good third to Sleeping Night and Ilnamar (beaten 8½lengths) in the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Grade 3) , or his third to Sleeping Night and Douze Douze in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase Des 4 Ans (Chase) (Grade 1) in November 2000. He has certainly been given a chance here off of only a handicap rating of 116, and I can't see him not finishing in the first four.... He'll do for me".
"ANOTHER WINNER FOR "ONE TO JUMP 2003"

WORCESTER
Sunday, June 9th 2002
Tote betXpress Hurdle {H' cap}. £20000 added, 4yo plus, 2m, penalty £13897, 14 runners.
Cupboard Lover, Saragann, Dick The Taxi, Barren Lands, Boater, Bernardon, Inn Antique, Barren Lands, and Knight's Emperor make most appeal in a decent handicap hurdle for this time of year. There is bound to be market support for Cupboard Lover, especially after his smooth win at Newbury on the flat earlier this week, however in Bernardon, and Inn Antique, he meets two potentially well treated "improvers". I have a high regard for Bernardon, who I literally haven't stopped raving about. This former Group winner in Germany is much better than the form he showed when trailing home at Chepstow last time out, and off of this handicap mark, he is
worth chancing.
Bernardon held on to score at odds of 13/2ur
