HURDLERS
- JUVENILE
( 35 )¯¯ AFEEF (U.S.A.) :¬>-
br, c. Dayjur (U.S.A.) - Jah (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Richard Philips
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Wouldnt be an immediate choice for a jumper to follow , being by a champion sprinter, though his dam did win over 11f in the USA. He was sold at the July Sales out of Ed Dunlop's yard, having run four times without success, although he was second over a mile on his last start at Carlisle. He was rated 65 on the flat, which if translated over hurdles should be good enough to find a little race somewhere this season.
( 36 )¯¯ ANGLANIT (CHR) :¬>-
b, c. Lanitos - Anglointernational (CZE)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Anglanit is one of a couple of horses that Mark Pitman bought when he was in the Czech Republic in the summer. He had five starts last term, winning the Cena Ariky R (III) at Velká Chuchle in October '01. He's only had two starts this term, running his best race in the first of them, when finishing third in the Cena Yamato Travel R (II) again at Velká Chuchle in March. He has apparently schooled well and I'll be interested to see how he fares over hurdles this winter.
( 37 )¯¯ ATTORNEY GENERAL :¬>-
b, c, Sadler's Wells (U.S.A.) - Her Ladyship
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jim A. B. Old
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Attorney General is a horse that I have always liked and did me a favour first time out when winning on his debut at Warwick over ten furlongs. He was sent to Thirsk next time out and won a classified race beating Balladeer a head. I am a little surprised that he failed to build on this start in two handicaps however there is virtually no mileage on the clock and could be a good buy for Jim Old, despite costing him 75,000gns at the recent Horses-in-training sale.
( 38 )¯¯ A VENDRE (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Kendor (FR) - Waaria
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-I like to cover all my bases and I fill that A Vendre could do well on the country circuit for Nicholashayne this winter. He has plenty of run for Clive Brittain this summer, and although he didn't win , got progressively better with each effort . Arguably he ran his best race last time out at Nottingham where he may have gone close if more exaggerated waiting tactics were employed - rather than going for glory two furlongs from home. If he stays, I would hope he could find a little race or two this winter.
( 39 )¯¯ BAREME (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Homme de Loi (FR) - Roxa (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-(Henri-Alex Pantall in France)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Bareme; a three-year-old gelding by Homme de Loi, out of a winning mare has had three runs to date, winning once, at Nantes in October. he was bought at the recent GOFFS Horses in Training Sale for €38,000, and could be one to note in the juveniles division this winter.
( 40 )¯¯ BLADOUDAL (FR) :¬>-
bl, g. Cadoudal (FR) - Blabli (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Robert Collet
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Bladoudal is a particularly attractive son of Cadoudal, who got onto this list by virtue of a good third on his debut at Auteuil in October, where he finished 2lengths behind the eventual winner L'Interprete. He is sure to come on for that run, and with sound placement should get into the winners enclosure this winter.
( 41 )¯¯ BRIAR (CZE) :¬>-
b, c. House Rules (U.S.A.) - Bright Angel (ATA)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-I must profess that I don't know very much about Briar, other than he had four starts in the Czech republic without winning, his best effort appears to be when he came third in the Cena Sedlárství Jan Hauzr at Velká Chuchle in March. I liked what I seen of this scopey son of House Rules... He should progress with experience
( 42 )¯¯ BURJ AL ARAB :¬>-
b, c. Alderbrook - Princess Moodyshoe
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Burj Al Arab is a three-year-old gelding by Alderbrook by Princess Moodyshoe; a winner on the flat as well as being successful over hurdles. He is a half-brother to Misbehave, (a useful 2yo winner from 5f-1m) and looks to have the perfect jumping pedigree... It does seem odd that he was campaigned on the flat, though to his credit he did run creditably in defeat behind the likes of Snow Leopard and Rapscallion as a two-year-old. He surely will be tried over obstacles and in the right grade should find a little race this winter.
( 43 )¯¯ CARAPUCE (FR) :¬>-
ch, g. Bigstone - Treasure City
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Carapuce is an interesting import from France to go jumping this term. He has had six starts, winning twice as a two-year-old; at Saint-Malo and Angers, and was placed once in two starts at three. He was subsequently bought at GOFFS France's July sale....I can imagine him being good enough to find opportunities over timber this term.
( 44 )¯¯ COPYBOOK :¬>-
b, c. Danehill (U.S.A.) - Easy To Copy (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jim B. Walton
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- There was a time that a three-year-old colt trained by Henry Cecil would command at least five figures at a sale (and I dont mean 10,000gns!!)... how times have changed. That doesn't mean though that you couldn't pick up a bargain and Copybook may have been a very shrewd purchase. He didn't show much on the level in truth in five starts, but did compete in some decent maiden, finishing well behind the likes of Spinnette and Helloimustbegoing. He may simply not be very good, however he is an attractive son of Danehill, who possesses plenty of scope... The 4,500gns paid for him by Jim Walton may prove to be well spent by the end of the season.
( 45 )¯¯ DESERT AIR (JPN) :¬>-
ch, g. Desert King - Greek Air
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- I've been hoping that Desert Air was given a chance to race over hurdles, ever since I saw him on his debut at Goodwood last August. Although he's only won the once; at Newmarket in July He is a game sort who always gives 100%. He ran mainly in claimers however should prove to be better than that over obstacles... no world-beater but should win his races.
( 46 )¯¯ DO L'ENFANT D'EAU (FR) :¬>-
ch, g. Minds Music (U.S.A.) - L'Eau Sauvage
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Philip Hobbs,
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Do L'Enfant d'Eau should do well over hurdles this winter. He ran three times on the flat in the provinces as a two-year-old finishing third on the last occasion at Mont-De-Marsan in March. He has had two runs over hurdles; finishing in the frame on both occasions at Auteuil - finishing third behind Julius Honor on his debut in April, and more recently when third to Golden Flight and Julius Honor in May. This is fair form and he should be good enough to win over hurdles this winter
( 47 )¯¯ DON VALENTINO (POL) :¬>-
ch, c. Duke Valentino - Dona (POL)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Tom R George
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Don Valentino was one of Poland's better three-year-olds this season, finishing third to Dancing Life in the Nagroda Derby, Prezydenta R.P. in July as well as finishing fifth in the Nagroda Doris Day in May and Iwna (Przychówku) - L.R (kat.A) in June. If he gets the trip he could do well in juvenile hurdles.
( 48 )¯¯ FILS Á PAPA (FR):¬>-
b, g. Double Bed (FR) - Syvanie (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- François Doumen in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Not sure what to make of him. He has ability, he's run over 2400-3000m in France and was placed twice; finishing second to Fountain of Joy in the Prix de la Troublerie (Handicap) in April and more recently behind Tzar Du Frene in the Prix Sans Souci II (Handicap) at Saint Cloud at the end of May. He didn't win though which would concern me, that said, Double Bed is a good sire of jumpers so that may not be too much of a hindrance.
( 49 )¯¯ FULL OF MICHEL (FR) :¬>-
gr, g. Michel Georges - Quinte Royale (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Full Of Michel is a three-year-old gelding by Michel Georges who joined Nicky Henderson having run three times over fences at Auteuil, finishing ninth on his debut in September before pulling up next time out. Connections put his in a claimer next time out and despite being unfancied beat Reste Irlandaise by
¾lengths. He is untried over hurdles and can hopefully build on these efforts this winter.
( 50 )¯¯ GOLDEN FLIGHT (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Saint Cyrien (FR) - Sunday Flight (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Guillaume Macaire in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Golden Flight is a promising novice hurdler/chaser for next year. He is a half brother to leading four-year-old chaser in France Karly Flight. He has had two runs so far, finishing third on his debut at Auteuil to Julius Honour. (btn
1½ length). He showed the benefit of that effort when reversing form with Julius Honor in his most recent start; the Prix Chateauvert (Hurdle) again at Auteuil in May. He is a long-term chasing prospect who could continue to progress this term over hurdles
( 51 )¯¯ KALAMBARI :¬>-
b, g, Kahyasi - Kalamba
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (Sir Michael Stoute)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Kalambari looks capable of developing into a useful staying hurdler of the future. This three-year-old did not race as a two-year-old and was given six races this season by Sir Michael Stoute, winning a 1mile-3f maiden at Catterick in May by 13lengths. He was purchased at the recent Horses-in-training sale for 20,000 guineas and could do well when allowed to race over a trip over hurdles.
( 52 )¯¯ LE DUC (FR):¬>-
b, g. Villez (U.S.A.) - Beberova (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Paul F Nicholls
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Second to the smart Nickname on his only outing over hurdles at Auteuil in May. Lean and light when he arrived, has done very well, and I'd like to think he'd be good enough to go for the big juvenile contests, possibly starting at Wetherby or Cheltenham next month. Hopefully, he'll take a lot of beating first time out.
( 53 )¯¯ MANORAM (GER),:¬>-
b, g. Zinaad - Mayada (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Ian Williams
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Manoram is a three-year-old gelding, who had ten runs in his native Germany, winning once, as well as being placed on six other occasions. He has plenty of scope and will probably be best next term when apparently he'll go chasing
( 54 )¯¯ PHILIPPÊ (GER) :¬>-
ch, g. Surumu (GER) - Pasadena (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Andreas Löwe in Germany
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Phillipê is a three-year-old gelding by Surumu who has shown a little promise on the level in Germany, finishing a fair second on his debut at Dresden in April. Has a good pedigree and could do well on the continent
( 55 )¯¯ PROSPER (FR) :¬>-
b, c. Le Balafre (FR) - Phalagine (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Guillame Macaire
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Prosper is a horse that I hope will improve as the season progress. He has only recently come into training and has already shown promise; finishing second on his first start, over hurdles at Compiegne in September. He may not a world-beater, but he has potential... in my book that's half the job.
( 56 )¯¯ ROYAL HECTOR (GER) :¬>-
b, c. Hector Protector (U.S.A.) - Rudolfina (CAN)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Christian Von Der Recke
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Royal Hector, is a three-year-old gelding by Hector Protector, who has had ten runs on the flat in his native Germany, winning twice as well as finishing in the frame on five other occasions. He is sure to have been well schooled and may be good enough to win a race in this country this season over obstacles.
( 57 )¯¯ SELTER (CZE) :¬>-
b, g. House Rules (U.S.A.) - Selestat
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Thierry Civel in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Selter is a three-year-old gelding by House Rules, who has been lightly raced in his native Czech Republic, winning once from four starts over 1400m at Most in August. He should be well placed by Thierry Civel and hopefully will pick up a few victories on the provincial circuit this winter.
( 58 )¯¯ SAINTSAIRE (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Apeldoorn (FR) - Pro Wonder (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Saintsaire is a three-year-old gelding by Apeldoorn who won three times on the flat this summer at Strasbourg, Nancy and most recently at Saint-Cloud in May. This attractive gelding should make his presence felt over hurdles this winter.
( 59 )¯¯ SMART (SLO) :¬>-
b, c. Glenstal (U.S.A.) - Satyra (POL)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Another one of Mark Pitman's purchases from the Czech Republic. He had three runs on the flat last term as a two-year-old, failing to trouble the judge on his debut in September. That effort clearly did him the word of good as he came out three weeks later and landed the Cena Žrebcína Kobylany a Gestüt Güthler Hof-Kuchyna at Bratislava at the end of September. He had one more start when finishing a good third to Romans (who went on to be on of their better three-year-olds) in the Odvetná cena again at Bratislava in October. There was talk of him running in the Slovak Derby just before he was bought so its clear he possess some ability... it'll be interesting to see how he performs
( 60 )¯¯ TEÕRBAN (POL):¬>-
b, g. Don Corleone - Tabaka (POL)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Bogdan Chrzanowski, Poland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Teõrban is a recent purchase from the Horses in Training sale at Sluzewiec racecourse in Poland. Formerly trained by Bogdan Chrzanowski, he is a three-year-old by Don Corleone (a sire whose progeny do well over obstacles). He doesn't appear to have won, but has been placed. He is definitely a good-looking individual and it'll be interesting to see how he fares in this country.
( 61 )¯¯ VISIBILITY (FR)
gr, c. Linamix (FR) - Visor (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Visibility will be going juvenile hurdling this term. This son of Linamix has had five runs, winning on his debut as a two-year-old over 5f before finishing behind Medecis (second to Landseer in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr. 1)) in a listed race. He has run respectably in three starts this term (finishing in the frame twice) without building on that form and was sold at the recent Arc sale at GOFFS. being lightly raced there should be improvement to come.
Three-Year-Olds (Championship Class?)
( 62 )¯¯ FAST MIX (FR) :¬>-
gr, g. Linamix (FR) - Fascinating Hill (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Fast Mix is another three-year-old son of Linamix that Martin pipe purchased at GOFFS France sales. He is a maiden, only having run four times finishing in the frame on his last two starts at Compiegne and at Longchamp. Should progress as the season relents and it will be interesting to see what sort of campaign he's given
( 63 )¯¯ LOWLANDER :¬>-
b, c, Fuji Kiseki (JPN) - Lake Valley (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Dermot Weld in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-If I were to buy a three-year-old from the flat to go jumping, then Lowlander would be the sort of horse I'd go for. This gelding by the Japanese sire Fuji Kiseki ran thirteen times on the flat (a bit too much in my view as a potential jumper), winning four times this term at Down Royal in June, Galway in July; Fairyhouse in August and at the Curragh, where he beat American Gothic in the E. B. F. September Handicap. He was strongly fancied to land the Irish Cesarewitch on his last start but disappointed eventually finishing well behind the winner American Gothic. He earned a rating of 100 that day and he was always likely to attract interest at the recent Horses-in-training sale. Dermot Weld had to dig deep to get him, purchasing him for 125,000gns. He is likely to be a dual purpose horse for the moment, so he may not be seen too often over hurdles, however there won't be many with better credentials and he definitely one to look out for.
( 64 )¯¯ MALDOUN :¬>-
b, c. Kaldoun (FR) - Marzipan
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (Robert Gibson in France)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-The Wildenstein disposal Sale at Saint Cloud last week, attracted plenty of interest from prospective jump buyers. Amongst the purchases that will be making his way to this country is Maldoun, a three-year-old son of Kaldoun out of a half-sister to Grade One runner-up Anshan. He had five runs for the Wildensteins winning the Prix de la Villette at Longchamp in April as well as finishing in the frame on each of his other four starts. He was purchased for €44,000 by Hubert Barbe and will be an interesting prospect for juvenile hurdles this winter.
( 65 )¯¯ NICKNAME (FR), :¬>-
b, c. Lost World - Newness
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- J.-P. Gallorini in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Nickname was the first runner from One To Jump 2003 and he looks like a horse to follow if his smooth success in the Prix Wild Monarch Poulain on his hurdles debut. This full brother of Nom D'Une Pipe and Narkis (who have been in previous horses to follow features) jumped like a natural over the 3.000 metres trip and quickened up nicely in the straight to 6lengths between himself and Le Duc, with Lillium De Cotte, and Homme Du Bourg, finishing promisingly in third and fourth. Trainer Jean-Paul Gallorini was pleased with the effort and fully expects Nickname to come on for the experience, so I'll be hoping that he can get near the top of the tree.
( 66 )¯¯ OLD CALIFORNIA:¬>-
b, c. Sadler´s Wells (U.S.A.) - Turban
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Old California could be very interesting this winter if he takes to jumping. Formerly with John Dunlop, he ran eight times winning twice this term at Leicester in April and at Haydock in June, where he revelled in the mud, staying on to win by 5 lengths. He didn't win again though ran better than the bare form suggests in the Queen's Vase (Gr. 3) and when he came fourth to Spanish John in the Bahrain Trophy Listed Race) at the July Meeting. He ran well on his last start when finishing second under top weight at Ayr. It isn't the greatest surprise to learn that connections had to go to 85,000gns to purchase him. He's bound to be well schooled and could be interesting if he takes to the game.
( 67 )¯¯ PRINCE DES IFS (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Sleeping Car (FR) - Miss Brodie (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- G Macaire
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Prince Des Ifs is another unraced but well thought of three year gelding in Guilliame' Macaire's care. This son of Sleeping Car is due to make his debut soon and I would hope that he capable of getting into the winning enclosure this season.
( 68 )¯¯ VANORMIX (FR) :¬>-
gr, g. Linamix - Vadsa Honor (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- M. C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Vanormix could be a particularly good purchase to go jumping. Formerly trained by André Fabre, this grey son of Linamix appears to be impeccably bred - being a full brother to Vahorimix, winner of the Prix Jacques Le Marois (gr.1), Poule d'Essai des Poulains (gr.1), as well as finishing second in the Prix La Rochette (gr.3), and
4th in the St James Palace St (gr.1). He himself has had only three runs, failing to win, but finishing in the frame at Maisons-Laffitte, and most recently in the Prix Hébé at Saint-Cloud in June. Martin Pipe snapped him up at GOFFS July sale and could have plenty of fun win him this term in juvenile hurdles
