HURDLERS
- NOVICES (Four-Year-Olds & Upwards)
( 69 )¯¯ AIR MARSHALL :¬>-
ch, g. In The Wings - Troyanna
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Air Marshall is a five-year-old gelding by In The Wings who is a half-brother to a number of winners including smart French miler/1m2f winner Break Bread and fairly useful; middle distance performer Lucrezia. He is one of the best jumping prospect of recent years, having finished second to Millenary
in the Peugeot Gordon Stakes (gr. 3) at Goodwood in August '00, before landing the Great Voltigeur Stakes (gr. 2) where he beat Marienbard, and finishing a brave second again to Millenary in the 2000 St Leger (gr. 1). He was gelded after a poor run
in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket in May '01 and could be decent if he translates that sort of ability to obstacles
( 70 )¯¯ ALMIRE DU LIA (FR) :¬>-
ch, g. Beyssac (FR) - Lita (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mrs S C Bradburne
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Almire Du Lia is an unraced four-year-old gelding by Beyssac, (a sire who produces plenty of winners over obstacles in France. Chasing will be this horse's forte, however I would hope that he is capable of winning in the meantime over hurdles (although probably not until the end of the season).
( 71 )¯¯ AMERICANCONNECTION:¬>-
b, g. Lord Americo - Ballyea Jacki
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Willie P Mullins in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Americanconnection makes a welcome to the track this winter. This six-year-old son of Lord Americo was highly regarded as a four year though disappointed on his only start where he could do no better than come eighth to Ivan De Vonnas at Fairyhouse in April '01, (beaten
17½ lengths). Americanconnection missed last season through injury however hopefully can confirm his trainers' lofty opinion of him this winter.
( 72 )¯¯ ARMAGUEDON (FR) :¬>-
b, g.. Garde Royale - Miss Dundee (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Armaguedon showed plenty of promise on his only starts right at the end of last term, when chasing home Maybe The Business in the bumper at Ayr on Scottish Grand National day. That was a solid effort and I'd expect him to build on that this term over hurdles
( 73 )¯¯ AR MUIN NA MUICE :¬>-
ch, m. Executive Perk - Raashideah
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jonjo O'Neill
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- I've already had a few calls about the mare. I'll consider the Cheltenham bumper for her if I still have her. I'm convinced she will be a Gold Cup mare one day. She has already been schooled over fences and is a brilliant jumper.".... These were Caroline Hutchinson's comments about her mare Ar Muin Na Muice, after she'd won her third race in '01 at Leopardstown, where she beat Aintree bumper winner . Kickham by 2lengths. She was reputedly sold to Jonjo O'Neill's yard prior and didn't race since. It'll be interesting to see what course is chartered for the mare.
( 74 )¯¯ ATUM RÉ :¬>-
br, g. Be My Native (U.S.A.) - Collopy's Cross
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Paul Webber
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Connections of Atum Ré hold him in the highest of regards and having seen him last term I can see why they hold that opinion. He was very impressive on his debut in a Ludlow bumper in December '01, however he disappointed in the mud at Newbury on his next outing this February. Connections wisely avoided the championship bumpers with him and they should reap the benefits this winter.
( 75 )¯¯ BABY NORM (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Baby Turk - Norma Jane
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Guillaume Macaire in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Baby Norm is a lovely big four-year-old son of Baby Turk who has had five runs to date - w inning twice at Auteuil over fences in June and on his latest start at Chateaubriant. He has plenty of scope and should continue to do well over hurdles either in France or the opportunity arises in this country
( 76 )¯¯ BALINAHINCH CASTLE :¬>-
b. g. Good Thyne (U.S.A.) - Emerald Flair
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Jonjo O´Neill
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Balinahinch Castle should be capable of winning a little race this term. This five-year-old gelding showed plenty of promise when finishing second to Commanche War Paint in a maiden point-to-point at Athlacca in April. I'm sure that current connections will adopt a softly-softly approach with him this term, but he should be able to make his presence felt at some stage this term (more likely the second half of the season)
( 77 )¯¯ BALLYLYNCH :¬>-
b, g. Lashkari - Tasmania Star
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky J Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Ballylynch, a five-year-old by the sire Lashkari out of a winner in Italy was bought at Doncaster sales for 62,000 gns after winner her maiden point-to-point at Taylorstown in April. He clearly attracted plenty of interest there and may be good enough to win over hurdles this winter, though probably will be better over fences in due course.
( 78 )¯¯ BENRAJAH :¬>-
b, g. Lord Americo - Andy's Fancy
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henry Daly
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Although eventually well-beaten by the eventual winner Tollbrae, there was a lot to like about the way Benrajah stayed on to finish well clear of the third on his racecourse debut at Hereford. He should be capable to taking a similar event before going on to better things this season.
( 79 )¯¯ BLANC C'EST BLANC (FR):¬>-
ch, g. Royal Charter (FR) - Tamilda (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Arthur Moore in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Blanc C'est Blanc is worthy of a mention, having finished mid division behind Thari at Leopardstown in December '01 - This race has thrown up several winners since so the fact that Blanc C'est Blanc held his position under tender handling, suggests that that they'll be more to come from him as he gains experience..
( 80 )¯¯ BOB AR ARGHAIDH :¬>-
b, g. Bob Back (U.S.A.) - Shuil Ar Aghaidh
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alistair J Lidderdale
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- For a horse so stoutly bred, I was pleasantly surprised how well Bob Ar Arghaidh did in bumpers last winter. Unfortunately for him, bumpers (with the exception of the championship bumpers) tend to be falsely run, which will always find out the more stoutly bred national hunt horses. This was evident on his debut at Sandown in November '01, where he stayed on determinedly behind El Viejo (btn 6lengths after being well behind turning for home). It happened again on two more racecourse appearances, running far better than the bare 6th at Sandown in February and 10th at Newbury at the beginning of March implies. I doubt connections will waste time in putting over hurdles this winter and we may see a totally different proposition.
( 81 )¯¯ BOLT ACTION, :¬>-
br, g by Phardante (FR) - Ebony Jane
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Paul Nichols
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Bolt Action, a six-year-old gelding by Phardante out of Ebony Jane (who amongst her victories won the Irish Grand National) is bred to be a good horse and judging by his sole performance so far, there is every possibility that he may be one. He made his one and only appearance in a maiden at Buckfastleigh in February and was backed as though defeat was out of the question, going off a 4/6 favourite. Despite running green, he readily disposed of his rivals winning hard-held by 8 lengths. It is not great surprise to read that he has now moved to Paul Nichols's yard where I would expect him to make his presence felt under rules.
( 82 )¯¯ BOOM ECONOMY :¬>-
br, g. Black Monday - Miss Bula
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- J A Berry
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Boom Economy is a promising six-year-old gelding by Black Monday who had a good season between the flags in Ireland, winning three times including a maiden point-to-point at Ballyraggett in March, before winning a "winners of two" race at Butlerstwon in April. Connections are now intent of trying him under rules and hopefully he continues his progression in that sphere this winter.
( 83 )¯¯ BROOKLYN BREEZE :¬>-
br, g. Be My Native (U.S.A.) - Moss Gale
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Brooklyn Breeze is an attractive five-year-old gelding by Be My Native, whose has been given plenty of time by connections, due to being on the weak side. He has only had the one run so far in a bumper at Haydock this March, where he stayed on strong to finish fourth to Bodfari Creek (btn 3lengths).I doubt he'll be raced very much this term, however he should be capable of going close, probably over hurdles this winter.
( 84 )¯¯ BROWN TEDDY :¬>-
b, g. Afzal - Quadrapol .
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Richard Ford
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Brown Teddy; a five-year-old gelding by Afzal, showed plenty of promise on his only start , when finishing fourth to Proud Bishop (btn 7lengths). Hopefully he can build on this (probably in handicap hurdlers) this winter.
( 85 )¯¯ BY N BY :¬>-
b, g. Un Desperado (FR) - Andonova
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Venetia Williams
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- By N By showed some promise last term in bumpers. He ran well in the second division of the bumper on Kempton's card on 28.01.2002 - travelling nicely throughout and looked dangerous turning into the straight. That effort was short lived and he eventually finished in the ruck of the field. Although this doesn't appear initially encouraging By N By gave the impression that he was better than this bare form, and may be seen to best effect over 2miles over obstacles, rather than this type of event, which may not suit him.
( 86 )¯¯ CARACCIOLA (GER) :¬>-
b, g. Lando (GER) - Capitolina (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Caracciola is another fascinating import from Germany. He is a five-year-old gelding by Lando who won five of his nine starts in his native Germany, as well as being placed on two other occasions. Nicky Henderson should do well with this hurdles prospect this winter.
( 87 )¯¯ CHANTICLIER:¬>-
b, g. Roselier (FR) - Cherry Crest
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- K C Bailey
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Kim Bailey should have some fun this winter with Chanticlier., He only had the one start, however it was a highly promising one making No Shenanigans pull out all the stops on his debut at Sandown in March. That was in a bumper and whether he were to stay on the level ort over jumps, he'd be a horse I'd expect to win races this winter
( 88 )¯¯ CIGARILLO :¬>-
br, g. Vestris Abu - Rose-Anore
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Noël Chance
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Cigarillo was strongly supported to win his only starts thus far, in a bumper at Market Rasen in April. Although he was well beaten, that was against Rodolfo (who come be a decent novice this term). He isn't that good, however he should be able to win a race somewhere this season.
( 89 )¯¯ CLOONEEN :¬>-
br, g.. King's Ride - Arctic Chatter
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Edward O'Grady
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Clooneen showed plenty of promise on his only starts so far winning a Navan Maiden hurdles in May '01. He missed last term through injury, but hopefully he will be able to make up for lost time
( 90 )¯¯ COCKCROW:¬>-
b, g. Topanoora - Call Me Anna
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Cockcrow is a big scopey son of Topanoora, who has had the one start at Huntingdon in April '00, where he finished third, beaten only 4lengths to the winner. He didn't run last year and has been fired but is back steady work. He should show some promise this season over hurdles before embarking on a career over fences.
( 91 )¯¯ COTTON SOCKS (FR):¬>-
ch, g. Houmayoun (FR) - Wiasma
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Kim Bailey
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Ginny Elliott appears to have produced a promising young pointer in the shape of Cotton Socks; A six-year-old by the sire Houmayoun. He was given a confident ride by Julian Pritchard on his debut at Garthorpe on the 10th of March to win as he liked. Held up initially at the back of the field, Cotton Socks made smooth headway with four fences to go. He sustained this effort to lead two out to eventually win going away by 10 lengths. Further improvement is literally guaranteed and his recent sale to Kim Bailey is a good omen.
( 92 )¯¯ CROW JACK (FR):¬>-
gr, g. Cadoudal (FR) - Cackle (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (Thierry Civel)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Crow Jack , a four-year-old gelding by Cadoudal, out of Cackle, which makes him a half brother to several winners including Line Apple (a winner of 6 races); Line Crow (a winner of 8 races); Native Jack (a winner of 3 races), Line Sky (a winner of 3 races), Crystal Jack (a winner of 18 races in Italy), and the great Grey Jack (a winner of 16 races in France and Italy including the Grand Prix de Pau (Gr. 3) as well as the '00 Premio LXI Gran Premio Merano Forst Steeple Ch.). I'm amazed that he was purchased at the recent GOFFS Horses in Training Sale for less than €8,000, especially as he only ran three times in France and hinted at having some ability. He's got a long way to go to emulate his illustrious half-brothers and sisters, however he could be potentially a real steal.. we'll see.
( 93 )¯¯ DARETOBEDIFFERENT:¬>-
ch, g. Aristocracy - Telmary
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henrietta Knight
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬> Daretobedifferent is a four-year-old gelding by Aristocracy, who was purchased by present connections after finishing runner-up in a point-to-point in Ireland in March. He reportedly has been pleasing them at home and they will be hopeful that he shows some of that promise on the racecourse this winter.
( 94 )¯¯ DAWTON (POL)
b, g. Greinton (U.S.A.) - Da Wega (POL)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (Andrzej Walicki in Poland)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Dawton is another horse that is due to come under the hammer shortly that could do well over hurdles. He is a four-year-old gelding by Greinton, who has done well in his two seasons of racing in Poland. He is the winner this season of the Nagroda Golejewka - LR (kat. B) over 2000m in June and was also placed in behind Dancer Life in the Polish St Leger. He seems to appreciate a stiff test of stamina and would be a very interesting purchase and at the time of writing is a possible purchase to go jumping. He should do well in that sphere.. wherever he ends up.
( 95 )¯¯ DISTINGO (FR):¬>-
b, g. Courtroom (FR) - Quinte Au Roi (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mrs L Wadham
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Distingo may do well over hurdles this year. He has run creditably in decent handicaps in the French provinces this season having won twice last year at Longchamp and Saint-Cloud. He was purchased by Highflyers Bloodstock at GOFFS, France's July sale and could do well over hurdles on the country circuit.
( 96 )¯¯ DOORS TO MANUAL (FR ) :¬>-
br, g. Saumarez - Filigree (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Charles O´Brien
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Doors to Manual has shown of promise for trainer Charles O´Brien in two starts so far in bumpers. He made a winning debut, beating Mullacash by a length at Cork in March. He confirmed this impression when running well under a penalty at Gowran Park in May. Not sure he'd remain with present connections to race over hurdles, but should be capable of finding further success this winter
( 97 )¯¯ DOE NAL RUA :¬>-
b, g. Mister Lord (U.S.A.) - Phardante Girl
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Tim D Easterby
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Doe Nal Rua is at the time or writing, an unraced five-year-old son of Mister Lord, out of Phardante Girl; a winner over hurdles. Hopefully he too will show some promise in this sphere this winter.
( 98 )¯¯ ELBOWS MAGUINNESS :¬>-
br, g. Lord Americo - Anmaca
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Michael Hourigan
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Elbows Macguinness didn't show very much in truth on his only race to date in a Punchestown Novice Hurdle in April won by Vanilla Man, however I was very taken by him and sometimes that is good enough. I dont expect miracles however I will be particularly pleased if he wins a race this term.
( 99 )¯¯ EMMET :¬>-
b, g. Supreme Leader - Virginia Ironside
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Edward O'Grady
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Emmet should do well over hurdles this winter. He is the winner of a maiden point-to-point at Cloyne in March, and was given "an airing" over hurdles in April when he made little impression, eventually finishing sixteenth. That experience should have done him the world of good and we'll see how he fares this term.
( 100 )¯¯ EXPLOSILLON (ARG) :¬>-
b, g. Potrillon (ARG) - Explosive Skater (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jim A B Old
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Paul Webber's and Jim Old's quest to find cheap(er) bloodstock to go jumping has found them some interesting talent from South America. Searches through the Argentinean formbooks enabled me to establish that Explosillon may make the grade. This seven-year-old was the winner of the GP General Pueyrredón (Gr.1) over 3000m in September '00... he has been lightly raced since but should appreciate a distance of ground.. he could be anything.
( 101 )¯¯ FAIR PROSPECT :¬>-
b, g. Sir Harry Lewis (U.S.A.) - Fair Sara
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jeremy A Glover
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Fair Prospect is well named having run well in both of his starts to date, winning a bumper on his debut at Hexham in June '01, before finishing fifth to Wild Dream under a penalty at Worcester at the end of that month. He missed last term through injury, however he may well have benefited from the enforced rest, as he should have had the opportunity to strengthen up a bit more. This horse lives up to his name and should go close to winning over hurdles this winter.
( 102 )¯¯ FIVE ALIVE O :¬>-
b, g. Alphabatim (U.S.A.) - I'll Say She Is
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Noël Meade in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Five Alive O gets into this by virtue of an encouraging fifth in a Punchestown bumper at the end of April. Although he was beaten 17lengths by the winner, this five-year-old gelding made steady progress through the final half-mile without ever posing a serious threat... He will come on a bundle for this effort and can win races this term.
( 103 )¯¯ FORK LIGHTNING :¬>-
gr. g. Roselier (FR) - Park Breeze
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Fork Lightning is a lovely chase prospect for the future. This five-year-old gelding, is related to seven-times winner of the La Touche Cup; Risk of Thunder and has only had the one start, winning his only point-to-point start in Northern Ireland. He won't be over raced this term but I still believe he could land a race before the end of the season.
( 104 )¯¯ FOREMAN (GER) :¬>-
ch, g. Monsun (GER) - Fleurie (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- François Doumen in france
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Foreman could be the "one that got away". Formerly trained in Germany by Christian Von Der Recke, Foreman ran some good races on the level finishing second in the '01 Austrian Derby and tenth in the Grosser Preis Von Baden (gr. 1). He was a warm favourite to win on his debut over hurdles, at of all places Folkestone in May where Tony McCoy steered him to victory. With his credentials it was a bit surprising that he was allowed to go back to Germany. Thierry Doumen got the leg-up to ride him at Baden-Baden on his next start, and he clearly impressed him (winning as he liked), because the Doumens have taken over his training. He has the potential to develop into a useful novice and it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that he may appear here at some stage this winter.
( 105 )¯¯ FOR PADDY'S DAY :¬>-
br, g. Supreme Leader - Romany Fortune
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Christy Roche
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-For Paddy's Day is a big scopey son of Supreme Leader, (He is almost 17 hands high), who has so far had three runs under rules. He made a winning debut appearance in a bumper at Fairyhouse in December '00 where he galloped home 2lengths clear of 25 rivals. He then lost nothing in defeat where beating all bar Big-And-Bold in a novice hurdle at Leopardstown in January '01. Connections gave him one more run; again at Fairyhouse in May '01, however conditions were too quick for him and he was always struggling to keep pace (managing to finish a creditable third in the process). He hasn't raced since however is back in training and could be capable of making up for lost time.
( 106 )¯¯ GARDE BIEN :¬>-
br, g. Afzal - May Lady
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Ferdy Murphy
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Garde Bien had a brief campaign last term but showed plenty of promise on his only start in a Garthorpe Maiden over 2
½ miles in May. Held up early on, he made good progress from halfway to press the leaders approaching three out. Lack of peak condition told and he weakened from that point eventually finishing 12 lengths behind the winner Big Tone. He was subsequently sold at Doncaster sales for 33,000 guineas and is now in Ferdy Murphy's care. I would be hopeful of him showing further promise under rules this winter.
( 107 )¯¯ GHOST RIDER :¬>-
br, g. Good Thyne (U.S.A.) - Pit Runner
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Ghost Rider is an unraced five-year-old gelding by Good Thyne out of Pit Runner; who won races over hurdles. He certainly has the right sort of pedigree to win a race .. lets see what happens
( 108 )¯¯ GOODBADRINDIFERENT :¬>-
br, g. Mandalus - Stay As You Are
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henrietta Knight
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Goodbadrindiferent is an interesting purchase, having won point-to-points at Tyrella in March and Taylorstown in April. He has now joined Henrietta Knight and will no doubt be placed to win races over obstacles this winter.
( 109 )¯¯ GRAND FINALÉ:¬>-
b, g. Sadler's Wells (U.S.A.) - Final Figure (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Venetia Williams
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Grand Finalé is an exciting prospect , The former Dermot Weld-trained five-year-old gelding, won three times in his care at Leopardstown twice and at Gowran Park. He is though best remembered as the only horse to have beaten the great Sinndar a head in a Listed race at Leopardstown in April '00. He was sent to be trained in America at the end of his three-year-old career., however things didn't go to plan and he is now with Venetia Williams. You'd hope if he took to jumping he'd make his presence felt this term
( 110 )¯¯ GREEN FINGER :¬>-
b, g. Environment Friend - Hunt The Thimble (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Arthur L Moore
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Green Finger is another one of several good prospect in the care of Arthur Moore. This four-year-old son of Environment Friend has had the one start, winning a Summerhill Maiden point-to-point in April. He looks to have a nice future, and he wont be rushed... He'll probably be campaigned in bumpers this winter.
( 111 )¯¯ GRENVILLE (GER) :¬>-
b, g. Neshad (U.S.A.) - Glacial Star
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Christian Frhr. Von der Recke in Germany
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- After the success of Eluna last term it is interesting to note how many entries we are now getting from Christian Von der Recke. He has had plenty of success in France, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic with his jumpers and it seems he fancies making his mark in this country. Grenville is certainly an interesting possible as this four-year-old son of Neshad has won 5 of his 23 races (he was placed in 9 others) in Germany and the Czech Republic. With careful placement, I'd be surprised if he could find a race for this gelding (though whether he is a betting proposition is another matter -I think bookies will be very wary of Mr von de Recke this term)
( 112 )¯¯ GUMPTION :¬>-
b, g. Muhtarram (U.S.A.) - Dancing Spirit
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Kim C. Bailey
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Gumption is one of the more interesting handicappers to go hurdling this winter. Formerly in training with John Dunlop, Gumption ran eight times without winning, however ran several good races in defeat, arguably his best effort when getting within
¾lengths of Conquestadora at Haydock in September '01. He revels in heavy ground and should be in his element in mid winter when the mud should really flying. If he takes to hurdles it will be a big surprise if he didn't finally lose his maiden tag.
( 113 )¯¯ HANKO (GER):¬>-
b, g. Surumu (GER) - Hankaretta (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Ronald O'Leary
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Trainer Ronald O'Leary does really well with his German purchases, and I'd be hopeful that Hanko will showed enough improvement to win over obstacles this term. He ran seventeen times in Germany winning five times - his most significant win was in the Internationaler Club-Pokal (Handicap) at Baden-Baden in August '01, where he beat Forto and Miros, (who went onto considerable success over hurdles last term). He didn't cut much ice in three starts last term over hurdles however I suspect those efforts will have done him the world of good. He should win a race this winter.
( 114 )¯¯ HARROVIAN:¬>-
b, g. Deploy - Homeoftheclassics
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Ferdy Murphy
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Harrovian will have gone into several notebooks after almost beating Iris's Gift in the bumper at Newbury on Tote Gold Trophy day. Given the perfect introduction, Harrovian make smooth headway through the field to challenge for the lead inside the distance. Lack of experience (and a bit of argy-bargy) told.... There is no reason why he shouldn't win a bumper before the end of the season
( 115 )¯¯ HASH WEINSTEIN :¬>-
br, g. King's Ride - Kouron
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Charlie Swan
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Hash Weinstein in a six-year-old gelding by King's Ride out of Kouron (a daughter of Pauper, who won over hurdles). Looks good on paper and I'll be interested to see how he does over hurdles this winter.
( 116 )¯¯ HOME JAMES:¬>-
b, g. Commanche Run - Take Me Home
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Home James looks certain of success this term over obstacles , if his 14-lengths victory at southwell in March this term is anything to go by. A repeat of that level of form should ensure he wins over hurdles this winter.
( 117 )¯¯ HOUSEPARTY :¬>-
br, g. Grand Lodge (U.S.A.) - Special Display
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jim A B Old
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Houseparty, a full-brother to 7f juvenile winner Berengarius and half-brother to six other winners including useful 5f (juvenile) to 1m1f winner Nordic Pageant threatened to be useful when trained by Sir Michael Stoute on the level. For whatever reason, a win over Hyderabad at Haydock in August '01 was all that he mustered, eventually ending with a rating of 95. Connections thought that he was better than that, so it is interesting, that Jim Old has taken him on... wouldn't be surprised if the Glenlivet Hurdle at Aintree wasn't high on his agenda, and even if he isn't that good, you'd be disappointed if he wasn't up to winning an ordinary maiden on the country circuit.
( 118 )¯¯ HOWRWENOW :¬>-
b, g. Commanche Run - Maythefifth
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henrietta Knight
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Howrwenow has joined Henrietta Knight having won a four-year-old maiden point-to-point at Lismore in March. He should make his mark over fences in the coming years, however should be seen to best effect in staying novice hurdles this winter.
( 119 )¯¯ ILABON (FR) :¬>-
ch, g. Secret Haunt (FR) - Ahuille (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-(Laurent Viel in France)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Ilabon; a six-year-old gelding by Secret Haunt won one of his ten starts of the flat in the french provinces (at Royan over 2300m in '01), as well finishing in the frame on five other occasions. He has only had two runs over obstacles most recently at Auteuil in September where he finishing over 30lengths behind the winner Kismi Des Brosses, however he clearly had something that appealed to a British buyer as he was purchased at the recent GOFFS Horses in Training Sale for €30,000... It'll be interesting to see how he does during the remainder of the season.
( 120 )¯¯ INCA TRAIL :¬>-
br, g. Un Desperado (FR) - Katday (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henrietta C. Knight
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Best mate's full brother has left Edward O' Grady' yard having won his only start at Naas in January 2002 by 9lengths. He is now with Henrietta Knight, and is being aimed at the Cheltenham Bumper... He should win more races this term.
( 121 )¯¯ ISHANDRAZ (GER):¬>-
gr, g. Mondrian (GER) - Isla Limpia (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-I've been aware that Ishandraz has been in Martin Pipe's care for over two years now, and frankly I'm been wondering if he'd ever make it to the track. He was formerly trained in Germany by Dieter Fechner and only ran three times winning once. He was claimed by current connections after finishing second in a claimer at Chantilly in July '00. He may not be very good, however he does appear to have plenty of stamina in his pedigree so could do well when given a chance to race over a distance of ground.
( 122 )¯¯ JARODE :¬>-
br, g. Minster Son - White Lion
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (Susan Dent)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Jarode attracted plenty of interest at this season's Doncaster spring sales. This seven-year-old gelding by Minster Son is unbeaten so far having won a maiden point-to-point at Hornby Castle at the beginning of March before winning a restricted race at Hutton Rugby at the end of March in the fastest time of the day. He cost new connections 30,000 gns at that sale so presumable they'll be hopeful of getting some of that outlay back under rules this winter.
( 123 )¯¯ JEFERTITI (FR) :¬>-
ch, g. Le Nain Jaune (FR) - Nefertiti (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henrietta Knight
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Jefertiti ran once in france before being purchased by Henrietta Knight, finishing three lengths behind the winner Maillot Jaune at Auteuil over 2m2f in May. That was a fair effort and this five-year-old should in this country.
( 124 )¯¯ JESPER (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Video Rock (FR) - Belle des Airs (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Richard Phillips
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Jesper, a five-year-old AQPS-bred, has joined current connections, having finished in the frame in six bumpers, most recently when finishing 2lengths behind Malory Du Cheney at Vittel in August. He's a nice prospect who should hopefully show some promise in middle distance novice hurdles.
( 125 )¯¯ JIM (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Glaieul (U.S.A.) - Beautywal (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jim T R Dreaper in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Jim is a five-year-old gelding by Glaieul, who only ran once under rules finishing sixth in a Navan Bumper in January . He is a lovely stamp of a horse that will be seen to best effect when he races over obstacles.. Hopefully we'll see some progression this winter .
( 126 )¯¯ JOHNSTON'S SWALLOW :¬>-
b, g. Commanche Run - Mirror Of Flowers
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Michael J P O´Brien
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Johnston's Swallow is another promising sort to go hurdling. He ran twice last term in bumpers; chasing home two good sorts in Liberman and The Biker; (both of whom have joined this list - and also interestingly Martin Pipe's yard). Johnston's Swallow should do well this winter in Ireland
( 127 )¯¯ KEFIR D'ANGRON (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Panoramic - Wagama (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Guillaume Macaire in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Kefir d'Angron is one of Guillaume Macaire's better four-year-olds. He has so far had six outings, winning four times; once on the flat at Royan in August, as well as three times over hurdles at Chateaubriant in May, as well as at Cholet and Strasbourg last month. The only other time he completed was when splitting Dark Steel and Maille Pistol in the Prix de Royan (Hurdle) at Auteuil in June. Considering he conceded weights to these runners, that was a good effort, and there's every chance he won't be far below the best of his age group.
( 128 )¯¯ KERRIGAND (FR) :¬>-
gr, g. April Night (FR) - Gouerie (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin. C. Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Kerrigand, could make an impact of racing this term He is lightly raced, having won one race on the flat at Fontainebleau, as a three-year-old, however he has run some solid races in defeat over obstacles. (He was 4th in the Prix Fifrelet (Listed Hurdle) & 5th in the Prix Finot (Listed Hurdle) as a three-year-old. His last start was when he was third to Ad Astra in the Prix Gaston Branère Haies (H'cap) at Auteuil at the end of May. He is a maiden, so all options are open. I came see him making an impact at some stage this term.
( 129 )¯¯ KICKHAM :¬>-
b, g. Supreme Leader - Knocknagow
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Edward O'Grady in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Kickham is a fragile gelding, but he has immense potential as he proved beating Beef or Salmon at in a Fairyhouse bumper in December. He wasn't disgraced next time out finishing 2lengths behind Ar Muin Na Muice in a conditions bumper at the end of December. He missed Cheltenham in favour of the Martell Meeting and repaid Edward O'Grady's faith by cruising home in the Martell Champion Standard National Hunt Flat Race (gr. 2) by 2lengths from Iris's Gift. If all remains well he should have a good season over hurdles this season.
( 130 )¯¯ KILDARE :¬>-
br, g. Supreme Leader - Fairly Deep
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Dessie Hughes
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Kildare will hopefully improve on his two runs so far under rules. This five-year-old son of Supreme Leader beat all bar Pizarro on his debut at Fairyhouse in April '01. He came out a month later and wore down John James to win a similar event at Naas. He didn't run again however the time off of the racecourse will have lowed him to strengthen up... he should do wel over hurdles this winter.
( 131 )¯¯ KILLER (FR) ,:¬>-
ch, g. Cupidon (FR) - Kaoutchka (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jonjo O'Neill
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Killer is a horse I'll be hoping will make an impact over obstacles. Formerly trained by Thierry Civel in France, Killer has had two starts, finishing second on both occasions at Durtal and at Saumur, in May. He was subsequently purchased by Highflyer Bloodstock at GOFFS July Sale and looks to have the credentials to find winning opportunities this term.
( 132 )¯¯ KNOWHOW :¬>-
br, g. Mister Lord (U.S.A.) - Mossy Mistress
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Knowhow is a strapping big gelding by Mister Lord, (he's well over 17hh) who is closely related to Amberleigh House. He was given one start last term and ran a cracker, finishing third to Cappadrummin at Kempton in February. He a lovely prospect for next season and wont be over raced this term... He should win a race this term.
( 133 )¯¯ KOMBINACJA (POL) :¬>-
ch, f. Jape (U.S.A.) - Komancza (POL)
It wasn't very surprising that Tom George returned to Poland having had so much success last term with the likes of Galileo and Corletto and well as Cobbet (who was bred in the Czech Republic, but had won races in Poland). It was interesting therefore to learn that he had purchased Kombinacja, who reading her credentials is without doubt (on paper anyway) a better prospect hat last year's Sun Alliance Hurdle winner. She ran nine times on the flat winning seven times including in '01 landing The Nagroda Polish Derby, The Nagroda Polish Oaks, The Nagroda Polish St Leger '01 at the beginning of September, (where she beat Galileo by 1
¾ lengths) and the Wielka Warszawska at the end of the September, where she beat Laveron by 2lengths with Galileo well behind in fifth). To illustrate how highly she was regarded by connections, she was taken to Germany to contest the Deutsche Post Euro Express Preis von Europa (gr. 1), where she finished ninth to Kutub. She has been here for five months and assuming she takes to jumping could be worth watching out for in the better novice events.
( 134 )¯¯ KONFUZIUS (GER) :¬>-
br, g. Motley (USA) - Katrina (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Peter Monteith
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Konfuzius is a four-year-old gelding by Motley, who ran twelve times in his native Germany, winning once, as well as being placed on five other occasions. He is nothing special, however he has been purchased by Peter Monteith, who is shrewd enough to find opportunities for him this season.
( 135 )¯¯ KRACH (FR):¬>-
b, g. Lute Antique (FR) - Voilette (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- François Doumen in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Krach, is a lovely big son of Lute Antique who I've been raving about since seeing him win the Prix Jacques de Vienne (One of the better bumpers for Non-Thoroughbreds) at Maison Lafitte in November '01. He made a pleasing first appearance over hurdles at Auteuil in December. He was given a very sympathetic ride by Thierry Doumen, jumping economically throughout, and travelled sweetly on the bridle. He has every chance turning for home, however didn't quicken as well as the winner Far Away Girl, but managed to come well clear of the third Beraud, who won a decent race at Enghien on his previous start.. It was fascinating watching the post coverage of the race, the cameras focused on Krach, and the close-up showed him striding up the hill in second, pleased as punch with himself, ears pricked as though he won. (Thierry Doumen isn't one of the biggest jockeys around, so it was slightly comical watching him flailing away in vain on this gentle giant!!!.). I'm sure François Doumen in France will be pleased with that run... they also know that he is likely to always be vulnerable is these gluey conditions. He didn't run again afterwards, (probably because he was still growing) and he could be a decent proposition this term in novice events.
( 136 )¯¯ KVALENTENZO (FR), :¬>-
b, h. Orival - Fay (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Noël Meade in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- I'll be interested to see whether Kvalentenzo makes in to the racecourse this term. He has yet to race over rules but is by Orival (a sire I know nothing of) out of Fay (placed on the flat and over obstacles), but is related to Cyfor Malta on the dam's side. Noël Meade clearly liked what he saw as he bought this gelding at GOFFS sale in '01... clearly he needed time to mature, however hopefully he came make some impact in bumpers this term.
( 137 )¯¯ LAÕUEN (FR), :¬>-
br, g. Funny Baby (FR) - Olive Noire (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- L Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Laõuen should do well this term over hurdles. He has had two runs in bumpers last term, winning cosily at Ayr in March, before chasing home Maybe The Business at Ayr on "Scottish Grand National" day. He isn't overly big but looks athletic and should do well over obstacles this winter.
( 138 )¯¯ LIBERMAN :¬>-
b, g. Standiford (U.S.A.) - Hail To You (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Liberman could do well with Nicholashayne. Formerly trained by Paddy Mullins in Ireland, Liberman had three races in his care, winning twice at Punchestown in April and Bellewstown in July before joining Martin Pipe. Wouldn't like to gauge how he'll do, however I'd be disappointed if he didn't add to this tally.
( 139 )¯¯ LOUP BLEU (U.S.A.) :¬>-
br, c. Nureyev (U.S.A.) - Louve Bleue (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (J-P Gallorini in france)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Loup Bleu is a four-year-old colt by Nureyev should plenty of promise over obstacles in France without winning a race. This is surprising when you considering his first effort over hurdles, where he finished second to Grand Match in the Prix Finot Haies (a race for unraced colts & geldings) in September. He finished
½ a length behind the winner Grand Match (one of the best of his generation) with Le Roi Miguel 7lengths back in sixth, and Sud Bleu further behind in seventh. He was purchased at the recent GOFFS Horses in Training Sale for €55,000 and could be another one to note from that sale when he next appears, probably on these shores.
( 140 )¯¯ MACONNOR :¬>-
b, g. Religiously (U.S.A.) - Door Belle
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henry Daly
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Maconnor is a lovely big five-year-old gelding by Religiously who, only had the one run last term, finishing midfield in a bumper at Warwick in March. He isn't really built to win in that discipline and will be seen to much better effect when tried over obstacles this winter.
( 141 )¯¯ MANDRIN DES AIGLES (FR)
br, g. Le Balafre (FR) - Favarella
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Bernard Secly in France.
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Mandrin Des Aigles is one of several nice prospects that the Marquesa De Moratalla has got to go over hurdles this winter. This five-year-old by Le Balafre did not race as a juvenile, but won twice on the level; at Saint Cloud - on his second start in June '00, as well as well as a similar event in March '01. He didn't win last term, however was only beaten
1-½lengths over 2miles at Maison-Lafitte in June. He showed plenty of promise in the Prix Achille Foud haies at Auteuil on his debut over hurdles and looks capable of doing well over hurdles this winter.
( 142 )¯¯ MAKE HASTE SLOWLY :¬>-
b, g. Terimon - Henry's True Love
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henry Daly -
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Make Haste Slowly is an unraced five-year-old son of Terimon, whose dam Henry's True Love has produce several winners over obstacles over the years, the most recent being Parlour Game. He will be interesting over obstacles however he may be able to confirm his entry in this list in bumpers this winter
( 143 )¯¯ MASTER FLORIAN:¬>-
b, g. Roselier (FR) - Paddy's Well
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Paul F Nicholls
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-From the family of Moorcroft Boy, he was an impressive winner of a point-to-point in the spring and will run in staying hurdles this winter.
( 144 )¯¯ MATRIX (AUS) :¬>-
b, g. Centaine (AUS) - Iced Lass (NZ)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Kim C Bailey
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Matrix is a five-year-old gelding by the Australian sire Centaine, who was given two runs in bumpers at the end of last term. He didn't curt much ice in truth - his best effort probably being in on his debut when he finished 13lengths behind the winner Cappadrummin. He was backward and should have benefited from the experience. Hopefully he will improved over hurdles this winter.
( 145 )¯¯ MEL IN BLUE (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Pistolet Bleu - Calligraphie (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Mel in Blue definitely is a horse to follow if the initial impression left after his only start in a Newbury bumper proves to be accurate. This four-year-old gelding travelled sweetly throughout and they proved he was prepared to battle and he outstayed stablemate Kyper Disco to win by a head. I'm sure he will improve on that run and I'll be expecting to win over obstacles this winter.
( 146 )¯¯ MONTEFORTE :¬>-
b, g. Alflora - Double Dutch
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Jim A B Old
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Monteforte, a four-year-old by Alflora out of the Cesarewitch winner Double Dutch, had one run last term when landing a three-mile maiden point-to-point by 2lengths for Ger Hourigan at Kilmallock in April. He was sold at Doncaster's May sale for 66,000gns and will hopefully continue to progress for new connections this winter.
( 147 )¯¯ MUKHALIF :¬>-
ch, h. Caerleon (U.S.A.) - Potri Pe (ARG)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- 1999 Derby Italiano winner Mukhalif, is another interesting recruit to hurdling . The six-year-old entire son of Caerleon was a useful juvenile when trained by Michael Jarvis. Before winning in Italy, Mukhalif ran creditably in the German equivalent. Mukhalif was trained in Dubai last winter by John Sadler, where he ran seven times, winning at Nad Al Sheba in December, and made his final appearance there in February. He returned to Britain in the spring, and was sold for 32,000gns at the Newmarket July Sale. If connections can keep him sound he could be make his presence felt in one of the better novice hurdle races
( 148 )¯¯ MYSTÉRIEUX MR NO (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Tropular - Petite No (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Benard Secly in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Mystérieux Mr No is a decent middle distance handicapper in France, who is trying his hand over hurdles. He didn't win last term, however he contested many of the better handicaps, his best effort probably being when he finished fourth in the Prix De Glingel at Saint Cloud at the end of May. He has made an inauspicious start to his career over obstacles falling at the practice hurdle on his debut at Auteuil (a fall which broke his pilot's collarbone), however I'll be hoping that he can improve on that
( 149 )¯¯ MYSTERY (GER) :¬>-
br, g. Java Gold - My Secret (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Tom R George
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Mystery is another interesting purchase from Poland. This four-year-old is a winner of one start in Germany, however he developed into Poland's top-rated older horse, by virtue of wins in the Prezesa Rady Ministrów LR (kat.A), over 2600m at the end of June, as well as finishing a good third to Dancer Life in the Nagroda St. Leger - LR (kat.A) is September and fourth in the Nagroda WIDZOWA in June... He should want a trip over obstacles and will need cut in the ground to be seen at his best.
( 150 )¯¯ NA CREAGACHA DUBHA :¬>-
ch, g. Old Vic - Nova Express
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Noël Meade
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- I'll be interested to see how Na Creagacha Dubha is placed by connections this winter. This four-year-old gelding by Old Vic does have plenty of flat influence in the pedigree, however Old Vic is producing plenty of winners over obstacles of late. He'd probably be best this season in bumpers over hurdles but should be a better individual next season.
( 151 )¯¯ NARWHAL :¬>-
br, g. Naheez (U.S.A.) - Well Why
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Josh Gifford
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Narwhal should be one of Josh Gifford's better novice this season. He got onto this list, by virtue of his good effort on his only start so far at Newbury in March, where he belied odds of 33/1 when making eventual winner Lord Sam pull out all the stops. Narwhal should find a race if he's realistically placed.
( 152 )¯¯ NATTERJACK :¬>-
gr, g. Roselier (FR) - Hansels Lady
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Alan King
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Natterjack is an unraced gelding by Roselier who has been pleasing Alan King at home after purchasing him at the Derby Sale. Hopefully he can do well in staying novice hurdles after gaining some experience in bumpers
( 153 )¯¯ NAPOLEON BONAPARTE :¬>-
b, g. Insan (U.S.A.) - Chiminee Fly
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mark Pitman
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Napoleon Bonaparte is a lovely five-year-old gelding by Insan (a sire The Trainers likes the progeny of), who had two runs in bumpers last term, showing plenty of promise behind Cappadrummin at Kempton on his debut in February, before running badly at Chepstow in March. He's quite a big horse, which may explain his last effort as he's probably is still in the weak side...I won't be surprised if he didn't improve this winter.
( 154 )¯¯ NOBLEFIR :¬>-
b, g. Shernazar - Chrisali
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Noblefir, a four-year-old by Shernazar joined Lenny Lungo, after winning a maiden point-to-point at Dundrum at the end of March. His pedigree suggests that long-distance novice hurdles will suit him most this season, and hopefully he will show some promise this season in them.
( 155 )¯¯ NOËL (GER) :¬>-
ch, h. Acatenango (GER) - Noble Princesse (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- François Doumen in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- After the success the Doumens had last and this with their German imports, I am very keen to sift through their credentials. This seven-year-old entire by Acatenango ran 36 races in Germany, France, Sweden, Italy and Poland winning 10 times and was placed in nine others. His best win was probably in the Premio Federico Tesio (gr. 3) at San Siro in September 1999, however he ran some good races in defeat, one of his better efforts was when he finished fifth to Endless Hall in the '00 running of the Gran Premio di Milano (gr. 1). He is being at the Italian St Leger, after which connections may try him over hurdles .. he could be interesting if he took to them.
( 156 )¯¯ NORVADANO (FR) :¬>-
br. g. Turgeon (U.S.A.) - Esposente (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Arthur Moore in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- A typical store horse that Arthur Moore purchases with a chasing career in mind. This five-year-old gelding has had a couple of spins in point-to-points managing a well-beaten fourth on his latest start at Lingsdown in March... Let's see how he gets in bumpers this winter
( 157 )¯¯ NOWATOR (POL)
ch, g. Jape (U.S.A.) - Naradka (POL)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Tom R George
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- I've really got the bit between the teeth with my interest in Polish racing at the moment and as there is a sale shortly I thought I'll put in a few possibles who are due to come up for sale at the end of November, who could theoretically race this term in western Europe. Nowator is a five-year-old gelding by Jape, who won in '01 landed the Prezesa Rady Ministrów LR (kat.A), as well as the 14-ty dzien wyscigowy Nagroda WIDZOWA - (kat. B). He appears to be better than some of the purchases that have done well over here, so could attract plenty of interest... We shall see!!!.
( 158 )¯¯ NO SHENANIGANS :¬>-
b, g. King's Ride - Melarka
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- N J Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- No Shenanigans showed plenty of promise last term, winning on his debut in a Sandown bumper in March, beating Chanticlier by
½ length, before finishing fourth to Kickham in the Aintree Bumper at the Grand National Meeting. That was a good first season and I'd be hopeful of him building on those runs this term.
( 159 )¯¯ ÑURZYK (POL) :¬>-
ch, g. Freedom's Choice (USA) - Numeria (POL)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Tom R George
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Ñurzyk is a flashy five-year-old chestnut gelding by Freedom's Choice who has shown plenty of ability for previous trainer Dorota Kaluba in Poland. He won two of his four races during the 1999 last season and repeated that tally in ten runs during the 2000 season. He had his best season during the 2001 campaign, finishing a good fourth to Kombinacja in the Nagroda ST. LEGER - LR (kat. A) before landing the Nagroda SAC - A - PAPIER - (kat. B). He should have been well schooled and could be good enough to win over obstacles this winter.
( 160 )¯¯ PEPE GALVEZ (SWE):¬>-
br, g. Mango Express - Mango Sampaquita (SWE)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Mrs Lavinia C Taylor
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-I am really pleased that Pepe Galvez has been put over obstacles this term. This five-year-old gelding by Mango Express, is a full brother to a winner in Sweden, and is a half-brother to Forest Fire (a winner over 1m-1m4f). He showed plenty of promise in four races when trained by Ben Hansbury, his claim to fame is surely finishing 1
½ lengths behind Marienbard in a Leicester maiden in June '00. I'm not suggesting that he is a world beater (frankly there are horses in this list with far better credentials than him), however I will be particularly disappointed if he failed to make an impact at some stage this winter.
( 161 )¯¯PEPPERCORN (GER):¬>-
b, g. Big Shuffle (U.S.A.) - Pasca (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- François Doumen in France
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Peppercorn is another useful German import that has found his way to François Doumen in France . This five-year-old gelding has run twenty seven times on the continent, mainly in Germany Italy and France, winning fives times, most recently when landing the Grosser Preis der Landeshauptstadt Dusseldorf (gr. 3) at Dusseldorf at the end of October '01, as well as finishing in the frame on nine other occasions. He has to prove his ability to stay the trip, but could be very interesting should he do so.
( 162 )¯¯ PETANQUE :¬>-
b, g. King's Ride - Phargara
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Petanque could be a horse to follow if the initial impression left when he sprinted away to win a Huntingdon bumper proves to be accurate. This six-year-old gelding didn't appear again, however wouldnt need to improve much to win over hurdles this winter.
( 163 )¯¯ POLISH CLOUD (FR) :¬>-
gr, g. Bering - Batchelor's Buttons (FR).
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Tom R George
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Polish Cloud is another one of Tom George's polish imports (despite what he breeding indicates). He won twice as a juvenile in '00 and was placed in some decent races as a three-year-old: (he was second in the Korabia (Specjalna) (Kat. B) and Prezesa Rady Ministrów Lr (Kat.A) as well as finishing third in the WIDZOWA (Kat. B), and Dziennika Zycie Warszawy (Kat. B)). He did though land the Sac-a-Papier - LR (B) over 3200m., so clearly possess plenty of stamina. He wouldn't be considered in the same class as say Galileo, however it would surprise me if he didn't manage to find his level in this country.
( 164 )¯¯ PRIZEMAN (U.S.A.) :¬>-
b, g. Prized (U.S.A.) - Shuttle (U.S.A.),
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Prizeman, runner-up in Newbury's Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes and fourth in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot last year for Richard Hannon, has been transferred to Nicky Henderson with the ultimate objective of competing in the Triumph Hurdle. If he is able to run anywhere to perform anywhere near his BHB rating of 104, he is a certainty to win over obstacles
( 165 )¯¯ RODOLFO :¬>-
b, g. Tragic Role (U.S.A.) - Be Discreet
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Oliver Sherwood
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- There are plenty of punters who have no time for bumpers, instead they wait for the horse to win a couple before jumping on the bandwagon ..I dont agree with this viewpoint (as this list regularly proves) and source a lot of my prospects from these races. A case in point is Rodolfo who ran in the last of these races last term at Market Rasen in April. This big, lanky, unfurnished gelding, went off as third favourite, and could not have won much easier, cruising through to lead and drawing clear from two furlongs out. to win by a long looking 8lengths. He will have appreciated the summer break and should do well this winter over hurdles.
( 166 )¯¯ ROSE D'APRIL (FR) :¬>-
gr, g. April Night (FR) - Rose De Hoc (FR).
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Lenny Lungo
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Rose D'April has been given two seasons in bumpers, running four times winning once at Catterick at the end of December '01. He was outclassed in the Cheltenham Bumper behind Pizzarro, however placed in his level in the North, he should find races.
( 167 )¯¯ ROSSLEA :¬>-
br, g. Roselier (FR) - Burren Gale
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henrietta Knight
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Rosslea is a four-year-old gelding by Roselier, who is a half-brother to Russell Road. He was purchased by connections after landing a four-year-old maiden point-to-point at Athenry in March. Connections like him so he may be seen in some of the better novice hurdles this winter.
( 168 )¯¯ ROYAL CETI (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Garde Royale - Mira Ceti
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (Eric Lellouche)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Royal Ceti, a lovely brown gelding by Garde Royale, has always struck as the sort of horse that could make a hurdler. He is a winning on the flat, winning handicaps at places like Saint Cloud and Maison-Lafitte, as was tried in listed place this summer. He was strongly fancied to win on his debut in the Prix Achille-Fould (Hurdle) at Auteuil in September, making all and jumping boldly (bar a tardy jump at the second last) to win impressively by 2
½ lengths. This five-year-old is open to any amount of improvement and should be followed.
( 169 )¯¯ SABY (FR) :¬>-
br, g. Sassanian (U.S.A.) - Valy Flett (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- P J Hobbs
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Saby is a four-year-old gelding by Sassanian, who was campaigned in the provinces of France, without winning, however he was placed over both codes, his most recent effort was when he was second in a steeplechase at Angers in March. He clearly has potential to do well over both codes however I think he will be initially campaigned over the smaller obstacles... may be better in handicaps.
( 170 )¯¯ SAFARI PARADISE (FR) :¬>-
ch, g. Red Paradise - Safari Liz (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- (Thierry Civel)
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Safari Paradise is in many ways the perfect purchase from France in that he has yet to win in any discipline, but has shown bags of promise, over both codes, most notably when getting with in two lengths of Sun Storm in the Prix Orcada (Gr. 3) at Auteuil last November. He was purchased at the recent GOFFS Horses in Training Sale for €110,000 by Hubert Barbe and will be making his way to these shores in the not too distance future.
( 171 )¯¯ SAITENSOHN (GER) :¬>-
b, c. Monsun (GER) - Saite (GER)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Christian Von Der Recke
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Saitensohn, is a four-year-old gelding by Monsun, who has had eighteen runs on the flat winning four times including the Starohájské kritérium R (L) at Brataslav at the beginning of June '01, and the Slovenské derby VÚB R (Gd3) at the beginning of July '01. as well as being placed on ten occasions, including in Listed class in France. He has had two starts over fences, arguably running his best race in the Hauptjagdrennen der Vierjahrigen - Jean Harzheim-Rennen at Krefeld when he finished second (albeit a distance second) to Siberius who has gone on to land a conditions hurdle in Italy. If he adapts to our style of racing he may be good enough to win a race in this country this season over obstacles.
( 172 )¯¯ SEASQUILL (AUS):¬>-
bl, g. Squill (U.S.A.) - Sea Surge (AUS)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Ferdy Murphy
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-There has been a welcome influx of really decent flat horses over jumps of late and another one who could do well this winter is Seasquill, who has joined Ferdy Murphy from Dubai.. The six-year-old gelding ran in the Caulfield Cup in Australia and the £900,000 Dubai Sheema Classic on turf at Nad Al Sheba behind Fantastic Light in '00. He was bought last year to run in this year's World Cup but didn't make it , and amazingly Ferdy Murphy was able to buy him whilst on a trip to Dubai . He may not take to the game immediately (really good horses don't always) however I'd be disappointed if he wasn't good enough to win a race this winter
( 173 )¯¯ SHALAKO (U.S.A.) :¬>-
ch, g. Kingmambo (U.S.A.) - Sporades (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Philip Hobbs,
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Shalako, a four-year-old by Kingmambo, is the winner of four of his ten starts in Germany (and was placed on three other occasions). He has shown plenty of ability and could do well in novice hurdles.
( 174 )¯¯ SH BOOM :¬>-
b, g. Alderbrook - Muznah
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Kim C Bailey
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Kim Bailey has had a high opinion of Sh Boom, an athletic son of Alderbrook, who ran twice last term, finishing a creditable sixth to Mind How You Go on his debut in a decent bumper at Warwick in February. He was strongly supported to win next time out at Towcester, and after being held up in rear, made steady headway to lead approaching the final furlong, eventually winning by 3lengths. Hopefully that experience will stand him in good stead this when he goes over hurdles... I'd be disappointed if he didn't win a race.
( 175 )¯¯ SLOOGHY (FR):¬>-
br, g. Missolonghi (U.S.A.) - Lady Charrecey (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Nicky Henderson
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Since we're looking at for possible winners who previously raced in France, Slooghy who last raced almost a year ago, where he finished a creditable fourth to a grey called Turkama, who went on to win three more races including two steeplechases, is open to any amount of improvement. This six-year-old son of Missolonghi has very little mileage on the clock, and should be able to fins a race during the remainder of the season.
( 176 )¯¯ SQUIRE SHANDY :¬>-
ch, g. Afzal - Hatherly
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Noël Chance
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Squire Shandy is a flashing chestnut gelding by Afzal, who only had the one start, at Chepstow in a national hunt flat race in November. After being held up in the rear, Squire Shandy made steady headway to track the leaders half a mile out. He was asked to win his race at the furlong marker and showed a nice turn of foot to win cheekily by
½length. That experience will stand this lovely prospect in good stead this winter.
( 177 )¯¯ SUMMER IN SIBERIA:¬>-
b, g. Soviet Lad (U.S.A.) - Have A Nice Time
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Willie P Mullins in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Summer In Siberia is retained in the list. He was a promising second to Kickham in a Punchestown bumper in May '00, and built on that effort in '01, winning two bumpers, both at Fairyhouse. He didn't race last term due to injury, however will have been well prepared for this hurdling campaign
( 178 )¯¯ SZERYF (POL) :¬>-
ch, h. In Camera - Szuana (POL)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Radek Holcák in the Czech Republic
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-My interest in Italian racing (particularly their jump racing) has spawned increasing interest in the Eastern European national-hunt racing scene. There are several that that have been imported in this country who have added into this list...I thought I'd add a few that we are less likely to see but are worthy of a mention. Szeryf comes into this bracket. I must admit this four-year-old entire has came to my attention purely by fluke, as I noted he had run in some of the better long distance races in Poland as a three-year-old. I double-checked to see whether he had run over obstacles and noted he'd won over fences in the Czech Republic, most recently the Prútenky šampiónov (steeple ch) at Bratislava at the end of June. He is already highly rated over obstacles is one of their more progressive jumpers. This list is about exposing talent and whilst he wont ever grace Cheltenham I wouldnt be surprised if he is difficult to beat "at home" this winter.
( 179 )¯¯ THAIX (FR) :¬>-
b, g. Roi De Rome (U.S.A.) - Action De Balle (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Michael J P O´Brien in Ireland
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Thaix is a five-year-old gelding by Roi De Rome who has had one start last term, where he finished eighth to Supreme Developer in the Paddy Power Champion I.N.H. Flat Race (Gr. 1) at the Punchestown Festival (btn 11lengths). That was a great effort considering his lack of experience and he should be able to go close to winning a race of some description this term (probably more likely in novice hurdles).
( 180 )¯¯ THE BIKER :¬>-
br, g. Arctic Lord - Glenravel
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Martin C Pipe
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Martin Pipe has plenty of decent looking purchases from Ireland this term. Formerly trained by John E Kiely in Ireland, The Biker had two races in his care, winning at Fairyhouse on his debut in April, before chasing home Supreme Developer at Punchestown in April. He looks to be a decent middle distance prospect for novice hurdles this winter
( 181 )¯¯ THIEVES´ GLEN :¬>-
b, g. Teenoso (U.S.A.) - Hollow Creek
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- H Morrison
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Thieves'glen, a half-brother to the staying chaser Frenchman's Creek, showed plenty of promise on his only start to date in a bumper at Perth at the end of April. He travelled well throughout, only giving way once his lack of experience told in the straight, eventually finishing fourth 7
½lengths behind the winner Mister Wellard. He can only improve on this run and should do well over hurdles this winter.
( 182 )¯¯ THISTHATANDTOTHER :¬>-
b, g. Bob Back (U.S.A.) - Baden
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Paul F. Nichols
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Although he was ultimately he was beaten fair and square in both the Cheltenham and Aintree bumpers, Thisthatandtother had previously shown plenty of promise in two starts, behind Alvino at Ascot in December '01, and when sluicing home at Wincanton in February. I think he should build ob that when he goes jumping this winter and should figure ion many a "ten to follow" listing this term.
( 183 )¯¯ TOO FAR TO BRIDGE :¬>-
b, g. Jupiter Island - Catherine Bridge
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Henry Daly
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Too Far To Bridge is a huge five-year-old gelding by Jupiter Island out of a daughter of Pitpan. I was going to put him in the bumper list, however he is going to struggle to win on the level so I hope he'll show some promise over hurdles (cant wait for him to go chasing).
( 184 )¯¯ TRANSLUCID (U.S.A.) :¬>-
br, c. Woodman (U.S.A.) - Gossamer (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Christian Frhr. Von der Recke in Germany
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- A measure of how seriously I think Christian von der Recke is taking his British sorties is the fact that he has entered Translucid over hurdles in this country. This four-year-old son of Woodman has had 9 runs in Germany and Switzerland. he has won 4 times including the Preis der Neusser Industrie und Wirtschaft-Deutsches Sandbahn Classic (Listed) at Neuss, which he won by 20 lengths. he has had one run over hurdles so far, without success, but i'd be surprised if that lasted for very long.
( 185 )¯¯ TRANSATLANTIC (U.S.A.) :¬>-
gr, g. Dumaani (U.S.A.) - Viendra (U.S.A.)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>-Henry D Daly
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Transatlantic is an unusually purchased by Henry Daly as he doesn't usually but horses off of the flat. I can see the logic of purchasing this four-year-old gelding from Fulke Johnson Houghton as this four-year-old gelding revels in the mud and looked useful when winning handicaps at Kempton in April '01, and at the same venue this season when beating Burgundy by
1-½ lengths over a mile this June. If he takes to jumping I would expect him to be placed to win a race this winter.
( 186 )¯¯ ULTIMATE ACCOLADE :¬>-
b, g. Insan (U.S.A.) - Echo Creek
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Willie P Mullins
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Ultimate Accolade was highly touted as Willie Mullins' best bumper two seasons ago, however he "disappointed" finishing behind Be My Belle at Gowran Park in February '01. Injury has kept him of the track since however he is back in training and can attempt to make up for lost time.
( 187 )¯¯ WELLINGTON HALL (GER) :¬>-
b, g. Halling (U.S.A.) - Wells Whisper (FR)
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- A Charlton
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Wellington Hall is a four-year-old gelding by Halling that ran nineteen times in his native Germany, winning twice as well as being placed on six over occasions, including in Listed company. He is an interesting recruit, who could be placed to win over hurdles if realistically placed.
( 188 )¯¯ WHAT A MAN :¬>-
b, g. Beau Sher - Cactus Wren
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Tom R George
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- What A Man is another winning point-to-pointer from Ireland that Tom George has purchased. He won twice this term the most recent of which was a winner-of -one race at Dundrum in March by 20lengths. He is a nice long-term chasing prospect who hopefully will show some promise over hurdles this winter
( 189 )¯¯ WOULDN'T YOU AGREE :¬>-
ch, g. Toulon - Mention Of Money
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Christy Roche
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>-Wouldn't You Agree is a five-year-old gelding by Toulon who showed plenty of promise on his only start to date where he finished second to Hunter's Bar at Naas at the beginning of August '01. He should built on this effort and is sure to find winning opportunities this winter.
( 190 )¯¯ XTRA :¬>-
b, h. Sadler's Wells (U.S.A.) - Oriental Mystique
¦ The Trainer ¦:¬>- Jim A B Old
¦ c.o.m.m.e.n.t.s. ¦:¬>- Trainers have been looking for prospect jumpers to buy at the Horses in Training sales at Newmarket. Paul Webber snapped up Xtra; a four-year-old son of Sadlers Wells for
120,000gns. He had decent form on the level, winning twice from nine starts including landing the Fred Archer Stakes at Newmarket in June. If he takes to obstacles he could be a very useful prospect
