Premio XVII Ezio Vanoni Steeple Ch. {gr.3} -

Analysis & Selections by
.i.l. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

MERANO
Domenica 16 Giugno
Sunday, June 16th 2002
¦ 1° MERANO ¦ ¬> 15.40 - Premio Resia - Asc.All E 10.000 - Mt. 3000 - Siepi - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Seven runners line up for this hurdles race over 3000m. You can give chances to Toni Morris [who finished well behind Almuhtaram here over 3500m at the end of May, who'd previously won over course and distance at the beginning of that month], Italo [who beat Londrina - who reopposes here -over course and distance at the beginning of June], Rhythm Golden [whose gone off the boil since winning at Torino in April] and Hammerklavier [a winner at the beginning of May, who ran well behind here behind Prinz Felix three weeks ago]. Italo appears to be the logical selection and gets my vote of approval.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Italo
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Hammerklavier
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Londrina

¦ 2° MERANO ¦ ¬> 16.10 - Premio Monguelfo - Recl.Fnt E 13.200 - Mt. 3000 - Siepi - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Eight runners line up for the second on the card. Several of these met here last week over course and distance. On that occasion, Monblond did best of them, finishing ¾lngth behind the winner Shadow Kings, with Sopran Siren another 5½lengths back in third, and Sell Golden further back in sixth. I cant see those placing being reverse, however Sound Of Sand could be dangerous if he can refind the form that saw him finish not far behind Shadow Kings at the beginning of May
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Monblond
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Sopran Siren
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Sound Of Sand

¦ 3° MERANO ¦ ¬> 16.40 - Premio Sergio Cumani - Disc. Gr. E 7.000 - Mt. 1600 - P. Grande - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Eight runners line up for the third race - a mile event. Ranchipur and Blummer reoppose, having finished second and third respectively to King Lear over course and distance three weeks ago. Up against them are Lilleman [formerly trained by Gerald Butler, who hasn't yet found his form in Italy], Bel Tag [A winner over 1700 Mt. on his latest start at Milano], Pino Carniglia, [the winner of his last two starts], and Monacosevenhundred [who finished in front of Bel Tag, earlier in the year, but has gone of the boil somewhat - though there is evidence of a revival]. This should be very closely contested however Bel Tag beat a useful tool in Stracch last time out and that sways me his way.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Bel Tag
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Blummer
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Monacosevenhundred

¦ 4° MERANO ¦ ¬> 17.10 - Premio Veio - Cond. Fnt E 13.000 - Mt. 3500 - Siepi - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Eight runner line up for race four, in which Bigger [a winner here in May], Fortunio, [ who won here over 3000 Mts. last weekend], German raider Just Flash, [who won at Pisa in February], and Waipikarau [in good form of late] make most appeal. Fortunio is a model of consistency and will be difficult to beat, however I do like the level of form shown by Just Flash better, and this five- year-old son of Hernando is just preferred
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Just Flash
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Fortunio
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Bigger

¦ 5° MERANO ¦ ¬> 17.40 - Premio Palade - Asc.Gr. E 6.000 - Mt. 3500 - Cross Country - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Konic, Melozzo, Aunt Daphne, Marco Garden and Gennargentu look best of the eleven runners who contest this cross country race... They're all much of a muchness really, nothing really standing out the others. Konic, who won a similar event in April, is just preferred to Melozzo, and Aunt Daphne, who are closely matched on previous meeting this season
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Konic,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Melozzo,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Aunt Daphne,

¦ 6° MERANO ¦ ¬> 18.10 - Premio XVII Ezio Vanoni  Steeple Ch. - {Gr.3} Fnt E 79.530 - Mt. 3800 - TRIO
1 Alexandroff 66½kg
2 Dixon (Pol) 65kg
3 Fedian 68½kg
4 Hero's Kadrature 65kg
5 Inganno 66kg
6 Royal Nadir 66kg
7 Strong Instinct 65kg
8 Surnaturel 65kg
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> The sixth on the card is the main race on the meeting. This Grade 3 chase brings together some promising individuals ... of them I like Alexandroff, [whose won his last two starts, having been beaten by our horse to follow Negro at Milano at the beginning of April], Dixon, [slightly disappointing on his last two starts, however is closely matched to Fedian on earlier form this year], Fedian [unbeaten in his last three starts, most recently when beat Hero's Kadrature - who reopposes - at the beginning of June], Inganno [who finished third to Alexandroff last time out at here three weeks ago], Royal Nadir [not beaten too far by Inganno and Fedian on his last two starts], and Strong Instinct [winner of two of his last three starts this term]. Fedian is going to be difficult to beat, however the progressive Alexandroff is just preferred.
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬> Alexandroff
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Fedian
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Royal Nadir

¦ 7° MERANO ¦ ¬> 18.40 - Premio Merano Maia - Disc. Fnt E 20.000 - Mt. 3900 - Steeple Ch. - TRIO
1 Taico 71kg
2 Sopranalbero 70kg
3 Dobromierz 69kg
4 No Surrender 69kg
5 Skyborg 68kg
6 Irish Dude 67kg
7 Beauty King 66kg
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Taico [the winner of three of his last four starts, most recently here over 3800mt. at the end of May], Sopranalbero, [who has competed in much better company than this of late, having won at Roma in January], Dobromierz [A winner of a decent prize at Pisa last October - whop has a bit to find with Taico who beat him here on their respective last starts], No Surrender [coming back to form having won a decent prize her last November], Skyborg [the winner of two of his last three starts, most recently at Grossetto over 3750mt. in April], Irish Dude, [beaten by Taico last time out] and Beauty King [the winner of three of his last four starts, most recently here over 3550mt. last weekend] all have claims in an open looking steeplechase. Taico does appear to be on the upgrade and is preferred
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Taico
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Beauty King
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>No Surrender

¦ 8° MERANO ¦ ¬> 19.10 - Premio Castel Fontana - Handicapgr. E 5.000 - Mt. 2200 - P. Grande - TRIO
¦±±±±±±±±±±±{at}±{the}±{post}±±±±±±±±±±±¦
¦ .i.l. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Seven out-of-form handicappers line up for the "Lucky last". Having selected Bel Tag earlier on the card, it seems sensible to side with Winded here, who didn't finish too far behind him on her last three starts ... I'm not very confident though. Despite conceding plenty of weight here. Talo appears to be the main danger
¦ 1er CHOICE ¦:¬>Winded
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Talo
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Bel Roi

Success Stories

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.

Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
