"THE PRIX DE L`ARC DE TRIOMPHE AT LONGCHAMP"
 [The Featured Meeting]

Analysis & Selections by

juge-à-l`arrivée

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er. _ LE GAGNANT?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

LONGCHAMP
Dimanche, Octobre 5.
... (2400 m 65000 Euro)

¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- A fantastic day's racing opens with this competitive looking handicap over 2,400 meters. Having looked at the field Notre Dauphine, Businessman, Turbo Jet, Sable Fin, Billy the Kid, Chick Quercus, Capo Rosso Maille Blu, Kalajorann, Tikzane and Host appear to have the strongest claims. My preference would be for Businessman; who won the Prix du Lac (Handicap) here a month ago, over Notre Dauphine; who was a decent fifth last time out in the Prix d`Automne (Listed) here three weeks ago behind Mer De Corail (btn 1length) and Maille Blu, [whose been placed in his last three starts, including a win at Maison-Laffitte in June].

... (4000 m 200000 Euro)
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯["ªt¨the¨post"]¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- There appears to be a particularly strong British challenge for the Prix du Cadran and in Mr. Dinos, Darasim, and Persian Punch, there seems to be a distinctly strong chance that this prize will be heading across the channel. Mr. Dinos heads the onslaught and if he is in the same form as he showed when winning the Gold Cup at the Royal Meeting he is going to be very hard to beat. however I don`t think Darasim, and Persian Punch, will hand the race to him on a place. Both are in particularly strong form this time around and replications of their recent wins could make matters interesting.. it is a shame that both like to dominate as they may nullify each other... With that in mind, it could pay not to be jingoistic and consider the "home team" as Cut Quartz, Germinis, Westerner, and Cléty will all like the likely strong pace and at their best possess weaponry with give them better claims that may be initially believed. I won't oppose Mr. Dinos, whoever from a betting prospective if Westerner can be backed at a decent price at British odds, I would certainly consider an eachway wager on him. He seems to be improving as he steps up in trip and having decent form behind the likes of Ange Gabriel earlier in the season, his two-length defeat behind Darasim in the Prix Gladiateur Royal Thalasso Barrière (gr. 3), here last month, may not be insurmountable. He might be very interesting if he stays this trip today.
¦¨¨1er¨PLACÉ?¨¬¨LE GAGNANT?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Mr.. Dinos,
¦¨¨2e¨placé ?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Westerner, [e/w, (UK) if offered]

... (1000 m 200000 Euro)
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯["ªt¨the¨post"]¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- An interesting renewal of the Prix de l`Abbaye, probably because the conditions may make it more open, assuming that both Airwave and Oasis Dream take their chances under the prevailing conditions. Apart from them, Somnus, Acclamation, Porlezza, Pleasure Place, Patavellian, The Tatling, Traou Mad, Victorieux, Striking Ambition and Danehurst. I don`t think the connections of Oasis Dream will risk him, on this surface, and therefore Airwave would seem the likeliest foreign winner, however her races have been blighted by slow starts and although the softer ground will nullify some of the effect today, course position is crucial and I can already another "unlucky in running" quote being attached to her. I may be wrong, {I wont mind}, however I'm prepared to take that chance. That could makes it really hard to call and whilst the likes of Somnus, [who of course beat Oasis Dream at Haydock] and Acclamation, [who won at Ascot two weeks ago] have strong claims I think this is a race to be brave in and therefore with that in mind, we will put up three "long-shots", [especially if you back them at UK odds rather than the Pari-Mutuel].

The first one is Victorieux, who bar a poor run in the Prix du Petit Couvert (gr. 3) behind Repertory, could have been much shorter for this. The second is Traou Mad; a half-sister to high-class sprinter Sainte Marine, who for most of the season has been campaigned at longer trips. Her second in the Prix du Petit Couvert suggests that this may be her optimum trip and she is worth considering after posting a "personal best". The third choice is Italian raider Pleasure Place. Italian form is generally under-estimated, however its worth remembering how well Le Vei De Colorì and Slap Shot ran at last year's meeting and Pleasure Place can't have done any more than have won her last four starts, most recently when landing the Premio Cancelli (Listed) at San Siro two weeks ago. They aren't immediate choices, however I'm hopeful they run creditably. I'll make Victorieux first choice here.

...(2000 m 250000 Euro)
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯["ªt¨the¨post"]¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Bright Sky, Yesterday, Ana Marie, Sweet Folly, Commerçante, Next Gina and Zee Zee Top appear to have the strongest claims in the Prix de l`Opéra, however its very hard to get away from Bright Sky. Her last three starts consist on a second to Falbrav in the Prix d`Ispahan (gr. 1), [btn 1 ½ lengths], a victory over Six Perfections in the Prix d`Astarte (gr. 2), and a solid third placing behind Nebraska Tornado in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (gr. 1) [btn 1 ½ lengths]. None of her rivals have shown that level of form and she really should oblige, however Ana Marie and German raider Next Gina could well give her plenty to think about. The last named won the Buchmacher Springer-Preis der Diana (gr. 1) earlier in the season at Munich and has since run creditably behind Dai Jin in the BMW Deutsches Derby (gr. 1) and Ransom O`War in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis (Bayerisches Zuchtrennen) (gr. 1) on her most recent start. She could be the eachway value of the race.
¦¨¨1er¨PLACÉ?¨¬¨LE GAGNANT?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Bright Sky.
¦¨¨2e¨placé ?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Next Gina, [e/w]
¦¨¨3e¨placé ?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ana Marie,

¦¨¨¨"Cinquième¨Course"¨¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 16:10 - Prix Marcel Boussac. Critérium des Pouliches Royal Barrière Deauville - [Groupe I] - Femelles - 16 partants - Pour pouliches de 2 ans. Poids : 56 k . ...(1600 m 250000 Euro)
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯["ªt¨the¨post"]¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Aiden O'Brien's Necklace looks a good chance to land back-to-back wins at Group 1 level, having landed the Moyglare Stud Stakes (gr. 1) at the Curragh from Red Feather, However I don`t believe this is clear-cut and in Green Noon, Denebola, Red Feather, Bay Tree, Grandes Illusions, Leila and Green Swallow she will meet her sternest examination. I happen to just prefer Green Noon, who won the Prix d`Aumale Casino Barrière de Biarritz (gr. 3) here two weeks ago over course and distance with plenty of authority and will be a tough nut for Necklace to crack. Grandes Illusions, who ran away with her latest start at Clairefontaine is probably the eachway value of the race.
¦¨¨1er¨PLACÉ?¨¬¨LE GAGNANT?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Green Noon,
¦¨¨2e¨placé ?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Necklace
¦¨¨3e¨placé ?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Grandes Illusions, [e/w]

¦¨¨¨"Sixième¨Course"¨¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- 16.50 - Prix Jean Luc Lagardère. Grand Critérium - [Groupe I] - [Nouvelle piste, 2ème poteau] - 8 partants - Pour poulains entiers et pouliches de 2ans. Poids : 57 k. ... (1400 m 350000 Euro)
|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯["ªt¨the¨post"]¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Aidan O'Brien trains 50% of the field due to line up for the Grand Critérium, however only Tycoon make any appeal. His second to Pearl of Love in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting, would give him a chance here, however he does look up against it, up against American Post, who won the Prix du Casino Barrière de Royan here three weeks ago; Diamond Green and Charming Prince, who finished first and second in the Prix la Rochette (gr. 3) here three weeks ago and Ximb, who won the Prix du Haras de la Huderie (Listed) at Deauville in August. There was 2 ½ lengths between Diamond Green and Charming Prince in the Prix la Rochette and given this will probably be strongly run, there may not be much to choose between them, however I was impressed with Ximb, and the manner in which he put 5lengths between himself and his rivals in the Prix du Haras de la Huderie, suggests he is useful juvenile. He's been laid out for this and should go well if he is in the same frame of mind.. he is the selection.

... (2400 m 1600000 Euro)

|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯["ªt¨the¨post"]¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯|
¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- This year's renewal of the Prix de l`Arc de Triomphe, seems to be quite predictable. We know that First Charter, Diyapour and Fontanesi, will ensure that this is run at a searching pace, whilst Dalakhani, High Chaparral, Doyen, Ange Gabriel, Dai Jin, Kris Kin, Mubtaker, Vinnie Roe, Bollin Eric and Policy Maker will play for position. I've heard a lot of the supposed problems Dalakhani will have from the outside draw, however with this being so strongly run, his draw may allow Cristophe Soumillon to take the position in the field he wants, rather than being trapped on the inside. If he has to go four or five wide all the way around, that would diminish his chance, however this field should be fairly well stretched out so possibly having to go one or two horses width around shouldn't be given as an excuse. He did nothing wrong in the Prix Niel Casino Barrière d`Enghien (gr. 2) on "Arc Trials day" and should confirm form with the improving Doyen. He and Ange Gabriel, look to be the strongest home challengers and Ange Gabriel, could have done no more than win the Prix Foy Gray d`Albion Barrière (gr. 2) without turning a hair.

He has very solid form and only Sulamani, [in the Dubai Sheema Classic (gr. 1)] has beaten him in his last seven starts.. a major contender. High Chaparral has been laid out for this after an early season injury and did well to win the Ireland The Food Island Champion Stakes (gr. 1) at Leopardstown last month. He was probably a fortunate winner, as Falbrav was very unlucky in running, however that confirms his well being and he should go close. I think one of these will win the race and I have to dismiss High Chapparal because of the proximity of Moon Ballad and a lesser extent Alamshar, nevermind Falbrav' s poor run, which gives rise to caution about the value of that form in the context of this race. It takes a really good horse to lower Ange Gabriel 's colours and Dalakhani ticks all the necessary boxes. I take him to confirm his position as the best middle distance three-year-old in training.

Eachway punters have plenty of options with the likes of Kris Kin, Dai Jin, Mubtaker Policy Maker and Vinnie Roe, all capable of nicking a place. Vinnie Roe might be very interesting if he can operate at this level at this trip, [especially the way the race is likely to be run], however German raider Dai Jin, [whose wins in the Oppenheim-Union-Rennen (gr. 2) at Köln, BMW Deutsches Derby (gr. 1) at Hamburg, and Credit Suisse Private Banking-Pokal (gr. 1) again at Köln were excellent efforts. a line through Alamshar doesn't put him too far behind and he should give a good account of himself] and Policy Maker, [an improving son of Sadlers Wells, who has only been beaten the once, by Doyen in the Prix du Lys (gr. 3) over course and distance at the end of June, who last time out was awarded the Grand Prix de Deauville Lucien Barrière (gr. 2), after being stopped in his run by first past the post Polish Summer] make most appeal.

...(2400 m 26000 Euro)

¦¨¨"juge-à-l`arrivée"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- another trappy handicap ends the card. Of those due to line up; El Rom, Fast Tempo, Bali Boom, Saturnienne, Oskar The Winner, Harukaze, Alexandro, Chista, and Dar Al Mulk make most appeal. Fast Tempo, the winner of a claimer at Deauville in August will take a lot of beating after a creditable third in the Prix de la Croix du Roy (Handicap) at Saint Cloud a few weeks ago, however I marginally prefer El Rom, who won the Prix de Nointel (Handicap) at Saint Cloud in June, who has been a little unlucky in running last time out in the Prix du Lac (Handicap) over course and distance at the beginning of last month.
¦¨¨1er¨PLACÉ?¨¬¨LE GAGNANT?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--El Rom,

DEDICATION

GEORGE E. ROBERTSON
1936 - 2003

FURLONG TO GO would like to convey our condolences to the rØøk, whose father; George Edward Robertson passed away on  16th April 2003.

Mr. Robertson nurtured the rØøk`s enthusiasm for this sport, and it was this inspiration, which is probably behind the creation of this website. As a permanent tribute to his memory, all the meetings covered under the "feature Meeting" banner will be dedicated to him...

Poids ...(2100 m 150000 Euro)
"With the advent of coverage of French racing on Attheraces, this season's renewal of the Prix Lupin arguably takes on even more significance as in Dalakhani, Super Celebré, New South Wales, Alberto Giacomettì and Ballestrinì we have five horses who could well figure significantly in either the English or French versions of the Derby. It also can give a good indicator as to which nation has the strongest form lines. I suspect there are many 'home punters' who could well be wading in here on either Ballestrinì, Alberto Giacomettì or even New South Wales, all of whom have been campaigned at Group level at 2 years of age in Ireland. In the case of Alberto Giacomettì and Ballestrinì, we know how good their form was from last term and have been given evidence of their well-being. After these two met three weeks ago at Leopardstown, where Ballestrinì was given the more judicious ride to make all from Alberto Giacomettì and Alamshar who probably were too interested in each other and as a result gave each other too much to do. There were five and a half lengths between these two on that occasion, and you would have thought that with 6lbs less on his back today, Alberto Giacomettì should reverse places, however the fact that Kieran Fallon has been booked to rider Ballestrinì here suggests to me that connections may well believe that he can repeat the dose, in which case it may pay to look elsewhere for victory. I like what I saw of New South Wales last term and I'll be fascinated to see how he fares here with the future in mind, however this should be fought out (in my view) between Dalakhani and Super Celebré. Dalakhani is unbeaten and has looked imperious so far in four outings. He beat Jipapibaquigrafo readily here last month and should be ready for this test, however it would be unwise to underestimate Super Celebré who has been brought on far more slowly by Eric Lellouche. He inflicted just as easy a victory on Jipapibaquigrafo here at the beginning of April and will give Dalakhani plenty to think about here. I expect this to be close, however I will stick with the likely favourite".

15:50 GAINSBOROUGH POULE D`ESSAI DES POULAINS [FRENCH 2000 GUINEAS] Pour poulains entiers de 3 ans. Poids : 58 k. Vers ...(1600 m 350000 Euro)
"France's first classic of the season has attracted a select field of ten and in the absence of Italian ace Le Vie Dei Colorì (who bar injury, would in my view have had a big say here], Clodovil, Bourbonnais, France, Catcher In The Rye, Desert Destiny, Elusive City and Sign Of The Wolf appear on paper to be the main protagonists. I do like Clodovil here, who did very little wrong when winning the Prix de Fontainebleau (gr. 3) here two week ago... I noted that the form of that race has been somewhat r
ubbished by certain UK pundits, because of Tomahawk's disappointing run in our Guineas, however Summer Diplomacy, who came second that day ahs come out and won since and this horse could do no more than remain unbeaten. He is preferred to Sign Of The Wolf, who is unbeaten and posted a good effort when beating Krataios [who reopposes] by a length, Bourbonnais, [who should come on from his first run in Dubai] and Catcher In The Rye, [unexposed and 3ll thought of apparently by connections]"

Grande Haies d`Auteuil Haies - The French Champion Hurdle {gr.1}
"Martin Pipe not only has got an outstanding chance of lifting the Prix RTL (Prix Hardatit) Haies, with Puntal, but he also has an even better chance of landing the Grande Haies d`Auteuil, Galant Moss, completely transformed since returning to race in France. He was unlucky not to land the Prix Jean Granel (Haies) last time here over 4100m 3½ weeks ago, when he made a bad mistake at the last, when still travelling well, allowing Spanish Wells to get past him on the run-in. Cristophe Pieux continues his association with Galant Moss, and having proven his ability to stay this trip (rarely run over in France) he has definite place claims. The race should be set up for him by Vic Toto, who could go well if he stays this extended trip and Kimbi, (difficult to catch right, but decent on his day as he proved when landing the in Prix Leon Rambaud (Haies) {gr. 2} earlier this year, beating Vic Toto). Galant Moss' main threat though is undoubtedly Laveron, vastly improved since returning to France. This ex German Group winner easily landed his maiden here spread eagling a field in the Prix Hubert de Navailles (Haies) at the beginning of April. He then stepped up on this when landing the Grande Haies de Printemps (Haies) (Handicap) here at the end of April. On that occasion, Laveron was handy throughout and quickened impressively when asked by Thierry Doumen between the last two obstacles. On his last start, he stalked Vic Toto before quickening to land the Gras Savoye Hipcover - Prix La Barka Haies {gr.2} here over 4300m. Despite the absence of Barracouda, Magnus and Le Sauvignon, this isn't too bad a renewal, ironically dominated by two horses who haven't shown anywhere near their true ability when they raced in this country. I would love to see Galant Moss win this, however Laveron has looked top class of late and I have to stay loyal to our "Horse to Follow".
Laveron quickened up close home to land the prize.

14:15 - Prix Sicie Haies.
Galahan; who was third on his most recent start here two weeks ago, Divine Gesture, (who bettered that effort when finishing second on the same card), Legend of Anais, who finished third on his second start over hurdles at Enghien, but who has been well beaten since, and Anissia a promising sixth on her most recent attempt over obstacles, make most appeal in this claimer ... Divine Gesture just gets the call

"Funny King, Sirius Parcs, Sète Nain, Laveron, and Isidore Ranson look the likeliest winners here. I expect a bold bid from the top weight Funny King, but Laveron (my selection) and Isidore Ranson may just be too good"

15:50 Prix Amadou Haies {Gr.2}
"Saint Des Saints, a winner four times (three times in Graded company) since his inclusion in our website's ONE TO JUMP feature has to concede weight to seven rivals, including Great Love, Cybergenics, and Kotika, (useful juveniles in their own right); all of whom have suffered defeat at his hand already this term. This magnificent dual purpose juvenile keeps improving with each start, and unless he has an off day should be too good for these. Or Ou Argent who made all to win here last week may sneak into the placing

16:20 Prix Jean Victor Steeple Ch.
"Holy Joe, Akarus, Passing Ship, Crin Argenté, Bacchus du Berlais, Fustrien du Paon, Argentat, Ian De Brion, Atacama, and Clayton appear to have the best chances in the next. Fustrien du Paon, who took the Prix Hauon here in March is just preferred to Holy Joe (sixth in the Prix Lutteur on his last start), and Crin Argenté (The winner of the Prix Oural here in November, who makes his first appearance of the new year)"

16:50 Prix Romantisme Haies
"Darius Quercus, Royal Standard, Kamillo, Baby Norm, Dark Steel, and Kafkaien have the best claims of those runners who line up for Division One of this hurdle event. Eperson, who won three times on the flat last season, will be strongly supported on the back of his promising fifth on his hurdles bow, however Darius Quercus, who beat all bar Cybergenics in the Prix Emilius (Hurdle) (Colts & Geldings) here last October gets the vote"

Prix Du President De La Republique

"
Innox, Hidalgo de la Prise, and Satin Turk appear to have the most obvious chances, however they are weighted according. At the foot of the weights Le Cid, who could improve significantly at the trip may cause a surprise. It wouldn't surprise me either if Philastre doesn't put in a "big run here", and if there is an eachway bet here it is him"
