Prix Du Jockey-Club.{gr.1} -

Analysis & Selections by .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. - Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

CHANTILLY
Dimanche 02 Juin
Sunday, June 2nd 2002
1er CHANTILLY - Prix du Château [Femelle]. 7 partants, 1600m.
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Kithira, Erimos, Dubai Belle and Haimonnous appear to have the best claims in the opener of the card. Kithira who third last time out in the Prix D'Angerville at Saint Cloud, had previously been placed in Group company ... Her rivals cant match this and if she were to runs up to that form, she should prove to be too strong here
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬> Kithira,
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬> Dubai Belle
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬> Erimos,

2e CHANTILLY - Prix Du Bois Saint-Denis [A réclamer] - 9 partants - 1900m.
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬> Zadisha Less, who has won in this grade around the provincial circuit will probably start favourite in the second. She is certain to go close, however Shatcha makes more appeal having run well in arguably better quality claimers at the premier track (though he'll need to improve on his most recent form to be certain of success)
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬> Shatcha
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬> Zadisha Less,
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬> Le Majestic

3e CHANTILLY - Prix du Gros-Chêne {gr.2}. 7 partants - 1000m.
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Swiss Lake, Maybe Forever, Dananeyev and Dobby Road appear to have the best claims in this Group 2 sprint. Recent Bath winner Swiss Lake has strong claims here. She is improving and will ensure that Dobby Road (who ran well behind Rock Of Gibraltar in the Grand Criterium last year) and Dananeyev (who won this event last year) will need to be near their best to score here. As much as I'd like to see Swiss Lake win this I suspect that these rivals may be able to pounce on her close home. Dobby Road is just preferred.
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬>Dobby Road
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬>Dananeyev
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬>Swiss Lake

4e CHANTILLY - Prix de Sandringham [Femelles] {gr.2}. 6 partants - 1600m.
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>You can make a case for all six runners in this Group 2 event. Sea Of Showers (who ran well in the Prix Saint-Alary (Group 1) at Longchamp), Clerical Error (a course and distance winner last time out) and Dance Dress (the winner of the of the Prix de Tivoli at Longchamp on her only start thus far) make most appeal. Dance Dress is just preferred.
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬>Dance Dress (USA)
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬>Sea Showers (USA)
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬>Clerical Error

5e CHANTILLY - Prix Jean Prat {gr.1}. [Males Et Femelles] 8 partants - 1800m.
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Shaanmer, Creekview, Imtiyaz, Rouvres, Aramram, Minds Locked and Gruntled are the main protagonists for this Group 1 prize. Imtiyaz (who made all to win at York last month) and Nostradamus should ensure that this is run at a true pace and if Godolphin's runner is in the same form as in that run at York, he will take plenty of catching here. Shaanmer (4th in the French 2000 Guineas), Aramram (6th in our equivalent), Creekview (2nd to stablemate Century City in the Tetrarch Stakes [Group 3] ) and Rouvres (a good winner at Longchamp last time out) will need to be on form ton ensure the prize isn't poached from them. I don't think that will happen. I expect Rouvres and Shaanmer to be too strong close home. Criquette Head-Maarek' s Rouvres is just preferred.
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬>Rouvres
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬>Shaanmer
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬>Imtiyaz

6e CHANTILLY - Prix de la Route des Princes - Handicap divisé - première épreuve. 18 partants. 2000m
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬> Minuit Noir, Cash is King, Principat, Danger Money, Tikzane, Salvateur, Mystérieux and Anticles have the best claims in open handicap. Minuit Noir has been in great form this term and was a winning selection for us, when taking a competitive handicap of French 2000 Guineas day at Longchamp. This should be run to suit him and if he manages to weave a path through here, his finishing pace should prove to be decisive.
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬> Minuit Noir,
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬> Mystérieux
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬> Principat

7e CHANTILLY - Prix Du Jockey-Club {gr.1} [ Males Et Femelles]

[ii] Khalkevi - trained by A.de Royer Dupré

[vi] Louveteau - trained by E. Lellouche
[vii] Simeon - trained by M. Johnston
[viii] Act One - trained by J.-E.Pease
[ix] Castle Gandolfo - trained by A.-P. O'Brien
[x] Black Sam Bellamy - trained by A.-P. O'Brien
[xi] Temple of Artemis - trained by A.-P. O'Brien
[xii] Sulamani - trained by P.Bary
[xiii] Great Pretender - trained by Rob.Collet
[xiv] Diaghilev - trained by A.-P. O'Brien
[xv] Le Fou - trained by J.-E. Hammond
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Fifteen are due to line up for this Group 1 prize, which is guaranteed to be run at a sound pace, with Simeon and Temple of Artemis in the line-up. Simeon should take some pegging back here, however Act One (who won the Prix Lupin (Group 1) at Longchamp last time out), Khalkevi (who got the better of Black Sam Bellamy and Louveteau in the Prix Hocquart (Group 2) on his latest start), Diaghilev (who beat Le Fou and Martaline in a bobbing finish for the Prix la Force (Group 3) here over 1m2f), and Castle Gandolfo [much better than he showed in the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1)] all will be lying in wait to pounce in the final quarter. France have a strong hand here, and time may show that they have two exceptional middle-distance colts in the shape of Khalkevi and Act One.... They should fight out a classic finish ... Act One should confirm that at present he's the "Head Boy". This could be a clean sweep for the home team as Louveteau, who was unlocking in running in the Prix Hocquart, and Le Fou who will be finishing fastest of all look to be next best and appeal as eachway alternatives
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬>Act One
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬> Khalkevi
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬> Louveteau, (e/w)

8e CHANTILLY - Prix de la Route Belleval - Handicap divisé - deuxième épreuve. 20 partants. 2000m
¦======{a}{t}={t}{h}{e}={p}{o}{s}{t}======¦
¦ .l.e. .h.o.n.g.r.e. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬> Joop Béré, Lirfox, Tofino, Canzona, Diex Aie, Fils du Nil, Gris et Noir, River Habit, Alexandro and Tibbie Shiels look the best of those lining up for the finale. Joop Béré, whose been competing in some decnet handicaps at the premier track, the consistent Tibbie Shiels (who hasn't finished out of the first two this season) and Fil Du Nil, who won two weeks ago at Longchamp may fight this out ..... Joop Béré is just preferred
¦ 1er CHOIX¹ ¦:¬> Joop Béré,
¦ 2e Choix ¦:¬> Tibbie Shiels
¦ 3e Choix ¦:¬> Fil Du Nil,

Success Stories

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.

Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
