PRIX D'ISPAHAN {Gr.1}  -

Analysis & Selections by l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. - Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; [¹ NØ.1 CHOICE], as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; [²E/W ALTERNATIVE] . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

Longchamp
Sunday, May 19th 2002
1er LONGCHAMP - Prix Du Dragon Femelle (2000 m 17000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Be Glad, Kid Gloves, Balalaika Tune, Jazz Slipper and Belle Allemande look to be the best those entered in the opener ... none of these have run so the market will be the best guide, however Be Glad, a daughter of Selkirk from Andre Fabre's yard and Balalaika Tune, a daughter of Lure, representing Eric Lellouche/Ecuré Wildenstein make most appeal ... Balalaika Tune is just preferred
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Balalaika Tune
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Be Glad,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Jazz Slipper

2e LONGCHAMP - Prix Vicomtesse Vigier - {Group.2} (3100 m 95000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Generic (who won two group races on the level last term and was an encouraging second in the Prix De Barbeville on his reappearance at the end of April), Balthazar (an improving 4-year-old who beat Generic on his most recent start in the Prix De Barbeville), Wareed (who thrashed a field over course and distance in October), Epitre, Gallery God and Speedmaster all appear to have chances in this staying event. Much could depend on where the pace is in this race as (depending on the conditions) a slowly run affair is likely to play into the hands of the speed horses. This might count against Double Honour as he may be forced into setting this up for the speed horses. This could play into the hands of Balthazar, Epitre and Gallery God. I will stick with Balthazar to win a muddling affair from his nemesis Generic while Speedmaster could be interesting if the heavens continued to open.
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Balthazar
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Generic
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Speedmaster (GER)

3e LONGCHAMP - Prix Rtl H' cap Divise - (1600 m 48000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Prends Ton Temps, Baryton, Alékan, Jean de Luz, Zahar, Arum d'Or and Impose Toi have claims in this open handicap Prends Ton Temps, representing Andre Fabre and Oliver Peslier comes here on the back of a win at Maison Laffitte and a good third in the Prix Andre Carrus here over course and distance at the beginning of May... he will be very hard to beat and is a confident selection here. Jean de Luz fourth on his most recent start over course and distance her in April is next best.
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Prends Ton Temps,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Jean de Luz,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Arum d'Or

4e LONGCHAMP - PRIX SAINT-ALARY - {Group.1} - Femelle (2000 m 150000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Ana Marie, [who beat Bright Sky and Summertime Legacy in the Prix Vanteaux (Group 3) ], Sulk [unplaced in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket - slow pace was completed against her] and Sea of Showers [who beat Heat Haze - beaten by the draw last week in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Group 1) ] appear to have the best chances in this trial for the French Oaks... In an open event Sea Of Showers is just preferred to Bright Sky and Sulk
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Sea Of Showers [U.S.A.]
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Bright Sky
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Sulk

5e LONGCHAMP - PRIX D'ISPAHAN - {Group.1} (1850 m 150000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Only four line up for this 9 furlong event, however it will be a bit of a surprise if Banks Hill is overturned (unless the ground were to really soften up). Anyone who remembers her Group 1 victories at Royal Ascot and in the Breeders Cup (Distaff) which was one of the best performances on the night will find it hard to imagine Execute, Best Of The Bests and Poussin' s being good enough to beat her. This is likely to be tactical, but at her best she should prevail. If I had to choose a rival to follow her home, I would go with Eric Lellouche' s Poussin, who was unlucky in running behind Execute on his seasonal reappearance and may well come out best in this tactical game of cat-and-mouse.
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Banks Hill
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Poussin
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Execute

6e LONGCHAMP - Prix D' E H' cap Divise - (1600 m 25000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Dolphin's Prospect, Manchester, Zapatafar, Pyramidale, Zaldoun, Rodin and
Kimbo have the best claims in the sixth. Dolphin's Prospect, and Manchester are closely matched on their recent meeting over course and distance in the Prix de Saint-Nicolas where Dolphin's Prospect just prevailed.. There wont be much between them here however Manchester is taken to reverse placings at slightly revised weights
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬> Manchester,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Dolphin's Prospect,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Kimbo

7e LONGCHAMP - Prix De Babylone (Réclamer - Mâles) (2400 m 16000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Zarewitch, Penedes, Mackinley, Au Nom de la Loi, and Crepello de Bonate make most appeal in the claimer. Au Nom de la Loi, second here in a similar event at the beginning of this month is a hopeful selection. Penedes who took two slightly less competitive events at Chantilly and Saint Cloud than this event is the one I fear most.
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Au Nom de la Loi,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬>Penedes
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬>Zarewitch,

8e LONGCHAMP - Prix Ernest Leroy (2000 m 18000 Euro)
¦------{a}{t}-{t}{h}{e}-{p}{o}{s}{t}------¦
¦ l' .è.t.a.l.o.n. .n.o.i.r. ¦:¬>Kingpin Oscar, Barbazan, Thistle Suite, Le Prestigieux, Forge Neuve and Go Surfer are my "preferred" in the finale....Kingpin Oscar, who won a conditions event at Fontainebleau last June is preferred Barbazan, and winning hurdler Le Prestigieux
¦ 1è CHOICE ¦:¬>Kingpin Oscar,
¦ 2nd Choice ¦:¬> Barbazan,
¦ 3rd Choice ¦:¬> Le Prestigieux

Success Stories

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.
Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
