THE SOLARIO STAKES (GROUP 3) 2002  -

Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er CHOICE), as well as the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

SANDOWN
Saturday 31st August
¦ Iª ¯SANDOWN ¦:¬>- 2:05 Variety Club Nursery, [a Two-Year-Old H' cap] - £7000 added, 2yo only, 7f 16yds, penalty £5209.75, 10 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Carrowdore, Desert Trapper, Howle Hill, Naahy, Almond Beach, Tiber Tiger and Border Tale, look best of those contesting the opener on Sandown's card. Carrowdore; [a staying on sixth behind Elusive City on his last starts at Lingfield] has been put in as the "paper favourite". I can understand this as he was finishing strongly having raced in rear, and I can see him going close here, however I like Howle Hill, [a rare runner on the level from Alan King's Barbury Castle yard], who won with a bit in hand at Salisbury last time out. the likely strong pace and stiff uphill finish should suit and I can see him cutting down his rivals in the final quarter mile.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Howle Hill,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Carrowdore,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Almond Beach, [e/.w]

¦ IIª ¯SANDOWN ¦:¬>- 2:40 Variety Club Atalanta Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) - £26500 added, 3yo plus fillies, 1m 14yds, penalty £18226, 6 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Miss Pinkerton, Mamounia, Granadilla, Hideaway Heroine, Desertion, and Mythic all can be given chances in this listed race. Miss Pinkerton, [second in a listed race at Deauville], and Mamounia, [humbled by Alasha at Bath last time out], have the form in the book, howevr i was taken by the manner in which Granadilla disposed of her rivals last time out at Haydock, quickening impressively in the final quarter to win by 4lengths. This is a step up in class, however she gives the impression of having more improvement in her .... I'll take a chance with her.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Granadilla,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Mamounia,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Miss Pinkerton,

¦ IIIª ¯SANDOWN ¦:¬>- 3:10 Iveco Solario Stakes (Group 3) - £37500 added, 2yo only, 7f 16yds, penalty £21750, 13 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Wahsheeq, [third to Bourbonnais in the Acomb Stakes], Barney McAll, [a clear cut winner last time out at Haydock]; Foss Way, [who improved on his good debut effort to win at Goodwood]; Desert Destiny, [the winner of a decent maiden at Newmarket]; Salsalino, [who won at Salisbury]; Indian Haven, [badly chopped off just as he was making some progress in the Gimcrack Stakes (gr. 3) at the Ebor Meeting]; Commission, [the winner of his only start at Sandown]; High Accolade [the clear cut winner of his second race at Newbury] and St Pancras, [a huge horse, who ran too freely when being beaten in a Conditions event last time at Salisbury] all appeal in this lkatest renewal of the Solario Stakes. This is very open and will take some winning ... I'll take a chance with Commission, who should've improve significantly on his debut effort. Desert Destiny and Indian Haven look to be the main threats, whilst Barney McAll, and St Pancras have eachway claims.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Commission (USA)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Desert Destiny
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> St Pancras,

¦ IVª ¯SANDOWN ¦:¬>- 3:45 William Hill H' cap - £15000 added, 3yo plus, 1m 2f 7yds, penalty £11505, 13 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Pagan Dance, Counsel's Opinion, Lycian, Kew Green, Free Option, Macadamia, Analyze, and Start Over make most appeal in an open looking handicap which is the fourth race on the card. I think it is difficult to oppose Macadamia, who was given a wonderful ride by Oscar Urbina, when she came through strongly to lead over a furlong out at Newmarket on her last start. Under hands and heels she maintained her superiority eventually winning by 2lengths. She may be coming to hand after an early season illness and she make more appeal that Pagan Dance (a maiden-winner last time out in his first handicap] and topweight Counsel's Opinion. Lycian, and Kew Green, [who have been running creditably on late] appear to be the best eachway options.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Macadamia,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Pagan Dance,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Lycian, [e/w]

¦ Vª ¯SANDOWN ¦:¬>- 4:20 Variety Club Rated Stakes (H' cap) - £18000 added, 3yo plus, 5f 6yds, penalty £11838.96, 15 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> The vastly improved mare Croeso Croeso, already a winner five times this term, [most recently at Bath], goes for a sixth success here, however Compton Banker, Mitcham, Budelli, Bandanna, Golden Bounty, Tudor Wood, The Tatling and Kathology may well have other ideas. Compton Banker, was our selection last time out, when weaving a spell over his rivals at Chester in May. It would have been useful to know why he hasn't raced since, but because I don't, I have to pass him over this time (you may not agree). and instead have one more go with our friend Budelli who has been in such good form this term, who didn't run too badly at York last time out, from a bad draw. For those looking for something at eachway odds, I am interested to see how The Tatling goes here... I napped him last weekend at Yarmouth and considering he hails from a yard who has been going through a torrid time he didn't fair that badly..... He could go well again at a nice price.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Budelli,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Compton Banker,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> The Tatling, [e/w]

¦ VIª ¯SANDOWN ¦:¬>- 4:50 intelliBet H' cap - £8000 added, 3yo plus, 1m 6f, penalty £6344, 17 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Coalition, Malarkey, Fourth Dimension, King Flyer, Typhoon Tilly, Midnight Creek, Diamond Road, Martin's Sunset, Classic Millennium and Shuwaib make most appeal in the penultimate race on the card. Fourth Dimension; a son of Entrepreneur has been (wisely) given a break having got beaten at Yarmouth in early July - his fifth run in a five week spell. He won three of those races and has to be feared here, however Coalition, a on of Polish Precedent is himself, the winner of three races in eight days this month, is still open to plenty of improvement. He was an easy winner at Newcastle last time out and should appreciate this extra distance... he is the selection.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Coalition,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Fourth Dimension,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Malarkey,

¦ VIIª ¯SANDOWN ¦:¬>- 5:25 Sunshine Coach Maiden Fillies' Stakes - £6750 added, 3yo only fillies, 1m 14yds, penalty £4992, 14 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Balmy, Key Virtue, Number Ten, Zyzania, Grand Lass, Mythical Charm, Sinamatella and Tianella are the fillies to concentrate in the finale. Balmy is likely to be favourite here. She was beaten 5lengths when finishing second to Shaiyzima on her debut at Windsor at the beginning of the month. That filly went back to Windsor and landed a handicap off of a mark of 82 [she appears to be on the upgrade], so Balmy's initial effort may have been better than first thought... She has to be the selection. Tianella who disapointed last time out at Newmarket had previously run well at Doncaster on her previous starts..... she is the eachway alternative to Balmy (in my humble view!!)
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Balmy,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Tianella [GER], [e/w]
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Can't Buy Me Love

Newbury
Saturday, May 18th 2002
2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.

Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
