Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.
Whether it be
"the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Illustrator, Jay Gee's Choice, Emran, Ransom O'War, Tanaffus, Iwo Jima, Joshuas Boy and Sure Sign are likely to head the market for the opener on Haydock's card. With sixteen runners declared to run, we should get a good idea of how the course is riding (rain was due yesterday/the course were going to water the track). With the exception of Jay Gee's Choice, there is very little public evidence to go on). Jay Gee's Choice must enter calculations as he has been placed in all of his three starts. He sets a decent standard here and should go close, however in Illustrator, [a son of Sadlers' Wells, related to two juvenile winners], Emran [a son of Silver Hawk, whose entered in the Derby] and Ransom O'War, [a son of Red Ramson, from a stable in good heart], he meets three newcomers who should give him plenty to think about. The market will be the best guide here, and whilst Jay Gee's Choice could make his experience tell, I prefer to go with the newcomers .... Illustrator in the selection.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Convex, Major Speculation, Late Claim, Love Is Blind, Moujoudh, Robinia Parkes, Oblge, Wathiq and Ground Zero have chances of sorts in the second. Convex and Major Speculation renew rivalry having met last time out at Newmarket in a similar event. On that occasion Major Speculation came out on top finishing a head in front of Sir Michael Stoute's charge. They met on the same terms here, so it's hard to see (other than the change of pilot) why the placing will be reversed. I like Ground Zero here ... he ran well last weekend at Ripon staying on stoutly in the final furlong to finish a length behind the winner Whittle Warrior. That was his first run for a month, so he may have a bit more to come here ... He should go close. Another to catch the eye is Moujoudh and this consistent colt looks to have solid eachway claims
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Ground Zero
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Major Speculation

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Rahwaan, Timing, Zibeline, Elgria, Typhoon Tilly, Dune, Dance In The Day, and Treasure Trail looks to be the best of those on offer in the third. Rahwaan who won at Newmarket over two miles last time out, should again go well here. He is a progressive son of
Darshaan and has a good chance of landing this prize despite the reduction in trip. He is just preferred to Timing who won cosily at
Thirsk two weeks ago. An interesting eachway possible is the unexposed gelding Order - not seen on a racecourse for over 430 days. This former useful bumper is two from three on the flat and a market move for this one could be interesting.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Rahwaan,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Timing,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>Order, [e/w]

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Continent; [winner of the July Cup and good third in the Nunthorpe], Malhub, [excellent second in the Nunthorpe Stakes, franking his win in the Golden Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) at the Royal Meeting]; Landseer, [fourth in the July Cup, this season's French 2000 Guineas winner may be better over further], May Ball, Air Thule and Nayyir, [who filled the first three places in the Prix Maurice de Gheest (Group 1) at Deauville 27 days ago], Danehurst, [promises top land a Group 1 prize, but has been found wanting so far... won nicely in Ireland last week], Invincible Spirit, [held by Malhub on Golden Jubilee Stakes form, but is a useful horse on his day] Mount Abu, [second in this race last year, and the winner of the Prix de la Foret (Group 1) at
Longchamp on his next start, he hasn't raced since disappointing in the Hong Kong Mile (Group 1) last December ] and Three Points, [looked good when winning at Newmarket last time out, however is held by several of these on July Cup form ... he may be better than that though] appear to be the horses to concentrate on in the big race of the day.
The torrential rain that has fell yesterday, may count against Malhub and he is passed over. I do like Continent, however you are hoping that he gets a run... I'd rather take him on. I do like Air Thule here (eachway). Hideyuki Mori's raider has solid form in Japan and connections do believe that she will have
benefited from her first run on a straight course. (second in a Group 1 isn't that bad if you think about it) ... on offer currently at double figure odds she is worth a saver. Prix Maurice de Gheest form may come to the fore here because I wouldnt be surprised if Nayyir went close, whilst Landseer, Mount Abu and Danehurst may not be too far away.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>Air Thule (JPN), [e/w]
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>Nayyir
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>Danehurst,
¦ Vª ¯HAYDOCK ¦:¬>- 4:05 Stanley Racing Rated Stakes H' cap £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 2f 120yds, penalty £12648.64, 7 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Takes Tutu, Persian Lass, Zawrak, Mawaheb, Raison Garde, Goblet of Fire, and Diamond Lover can all be given chances in the fifth. My friend Takes Tutu, has never won at the trip, however the Mark Johnston trained runner has been in great form since he got the visor. His last-time-out second at Goodwood was a good effort and if he gets the run of the race, I think he may prove to be too strong for Mawaheb, and Raison Garde.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>Takes Tutu (USA)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Mawaheb,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Raison Garde.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Forever Times, Simianna, Attaché, Judicious, Abbajabba, Deceitful, Historic Treble, Affaire Royale, Kulachi, Nemo Fugat, Extinguisher, and Rosselli, make most appeal in the sixth. Attaché has disappointed a little since winning impressively over this course and distance in July. He ran well last time out at Goodwood over seven furlongs and back at this trip, he should go close, he is the selection and is preferred to Abbajabba and Judicious. One for the future could be the Dandy Nicholls trained Extinguisher. This former french trained gelding possesses little bits of form that could make him interesting in races like this in the future .... support in the market would be worth noting.

¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Abbajabba
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Extinguisher, [e/w]

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Another competitive sprint ends the card. John O'Groats, Dubaian Gift, Elvington Boy, Ptarmigan Ridge, Whistler, Beyond The Clouds, Flak Jacket, Roxanne Mill, Sunley Sense, Talbot Avenue, Soba Jones, Tayif, Charlie Parkes, Gdansk, Proud Native, and Bodfari Komaite made most appeal to me. Ptarmigan Ridge catches the eye, especially after his good effort last time out at Epsom. Linda Perratt's six-year-old didn't get much of a run close home and will be appreciated every drop of rain that falls on the course. He is the selection. Dubaian Gift, [in good heart this term] and Tayif appeal as
eachway possibles
