SELECTIONS
- For each race, I have
given you who, in my view, are the likeliest winners, as well as horses
who could run well at eachway odds. 'R*ecommended'
horses have, in our view, the best chances of success each day. Any
horses from our 'Horses To Follow' list are shown at the foot of each
race's analysis.
POSTING
TIMES FOR SELECTIONS_
Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the
previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other
commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings
unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps
DERBY
DAY
Saturday 9th June
2.00 Eds Handicap 1m 2f 18yds Penalty £29000.00 4yo plus
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K. " _Vintage Premium, Catchy Word, Jedi Knight,
Riberac, Sarangani, Crimson Tide, Roman King, Parisien Star, Bogus
Dreams, and Junikay, all have claims in what looks a very trappy opening
to Derby Day. Three really appeal; Catchy Word, who looked
useful/happier, when making all when winning at Windsor. Riberac, in
good form this term, and who ran well behind Calcutta at Sandown last
time out, and Sarangani, who will given a well-executed ride when
beating Thundering Surf at Yarmouth on his latest start. I don't think
that the last named will be far away, however I expect Frankie to get
off to a good start by steering Catchy Word to success
"1st * Choice" _ Catchy Word
" (e/w) Alternative"_ Sarangani,
2.30 Vodafone Woodcote Stakes 6f Penalty £23200.00 2yo only
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K. " _ The second is very trappy.....Bella
Chica, Resplendent Cee, Whitbarrow, Woodsmoke, Dark Sorcerer, Hoax,
Tappit and To The Woods, are the ones that make most appeal. I respect
the claims of Bella Chica, who had a couple of previous winners behind
here when winning at Nottingham, and Resplendent Cee, who won nicely on
his debut at Windsor. they must go close, h0owver Hoax looked a useful
colt in the making when sluicing up at Southwell on his second start. He
is a horse on the upgrade, and should be doing all his best work in a
the death....Those looking for a longshot may wish to consider Brighton
winner Tappit, who won win authority at Brighton last time out. We know
he'll stay the trip, and act on the course .... he shouldn't be too far
away (Johnny Murtagh on board is an eye-catching booking)
"1st * Choice" _Hoax

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K. " _Nicobar, Soviet Flash, Pulau Tioman, Duck
Row, and Cayman Sunset, make most appeal in the third. Nicobar is in the
form on his life at present, and was an easy winner of a Group 2 event
at San Siro last month... He wont be far away, however Pulau Tioman, a
decnet handicapper on his day, can finally make the transition to Group
class. He will be produced very late, as was the case at Kempton last
time out, when he caught Easaar close home and hopefully he can withhold
the final attack of Cayman Sunset
"1st * Choice" _Pulau Tioman,

3.50 Vodafone Derby Stakes (Showcase Race) 1m 4f 10yds Penalty £580000.00

- CASHEL BAY (USA) Luke Comer IRE Luke Comer
Only one win from eight attempts - and has been soundly beaten in all of
his four starts this term. Soundly beaten in the Irish 2000 Guineas, and
whilst he may improve for the step up in trip, will need an Emily
Pankhurst-type episode to win this
- CHANCELLOR (IRE) Barry Hills Bill Gredley
Suggested that he might develop into a nice stayer prospect when winning
at Doncaster in November, he gamely outbattled Asian Heights to win the
Guardian Classic Trial at Sandown on Whitbread Gold Cup day. That was on
bottomless ground, and wisely he has been given time to get over those
exertions. It didn't read like a good race, however since Asian Heights
has since won Predominate Stakes at Goodwood , he clearly is entitled to
the closest scrutiny
- DILSHAAN Sir Michael Stoute Saeed Suhail
I'm a big fan of Dilshaan, ever since he made an eye-catching
performance when coming second on his debut at Sandown. For a horse of
such limited experience, Dilshaan appeared to have been pitched into the
deep end when he was asked to line up in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy,
but his trainer Sir Michael Stoute seldom makes the mistake of over
facing his horses and this son of Darshaan didn't let him down knuckling
down in the final two furlong to get home 2½ lengths in front of
Tamburlaine. Considering the indifferent form of the stable this term,
his win in the Dante Stakes at York was pleasing, if not as impressive.
He appears to have thrived on the experience, and is pleasing
connections at home ..... he should give a good account of himself
- GALILEO (IRE) Aidan O'Brien IRE Sue Magnier & Michael Tabor
Galileo is bred to be a decent horse; being a son of Sadlers wells out
of Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea. He is impossible to
fault, having won all his three starts with a bit in hand; last time out
winning the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes with plenty in hand. He
is certain to go close, however he is unproven at the distance, and
there is a question about the actual merit of his form - for example the
time was of his latest start was over four seconds slower than that
clocked by Sinndar in the same race a year ago, and you will be
supporting him (if he's your fancy) on the basis that he is better than
the actual level of form shown ........... stable confidence suggest
this is the case, and he is likely to go off favourite
- GOLAN (IRE) Sir Michael Stoute Lord Weinstock
The other unbeaten colt going into this race having impressed in both
starts, winning with plenty in hand when beating Clearing at Chepstow at
the backend of last season, before an extraordinary performance when
winning the 2000 Guineas. Having made a tardy start, he was taken across
the back of the field. When he was asked to picked up in tremendous
fashion and strode past his rival impressing to easily hold the last
challenge of Tamburlaine. That was an outstanding performance for one so
inexperienced , and he was made a short priced favourite for this race
as a result, however that confidence has ebbed away, and a couple of
poor gallops have threatened his position as market leader.... He is
bred to get the trip, so I'd have no qualms about that... Sir Michael
Stoute is a master of his craft, and therefore if there is anything
wrong with this horse he wont run ...... if there isn't ... he must go
close
- KING CAREW (IRE) Mick Channon John Carey
Well beaten by the disappointing Nayef last term, and will need to have
improved significantly to figure here .... he appears to be making up
the numbers
- MR COMBUSTIBLE (IRE) Barry Hills R A N Bonnycastle
One of an attractive quartet of runners from Barry Hills' stable, all of
whom should get the trip. Mr Combustible has plenty of stamina in his
pedigree, and that was used to great effect when he made all in the
Chester Vase, where he set a good pace before being sent about his
business over the final three furlongs. The time was fast and Snowstorm
didn't let the form down too much at Goodwood. He is an outsider with a
chance
- PERFECT SUNDAY (USA) Barry Hills Khalid Abdulla
Another inmate from the Barry Hills stable who has a major chance.
Perfect Sunday has improved after three efforts in maiden company last
term, into a useful staying prospect, winning at Newmarket, before a
cosy success in the Lingfield Derby Trial. Its hard to know what the
value of the form is as Xtra, and Hyderabad both let it down when
getting beaten last Saturday, however I suspect he is better than the
bare substance of that effort, and he is certainly entitled to eachway
consideration
- PUTRA SANDHURST (IRE) Michael Jarvis HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah
Putra Sandhurst; conceding fitness and experience to his rivals in the
Lingfield Derby Trial, ran a cracker. He was always chasing the winner
Perfect Sunday, and despite attempting to close 2 out, he was unable to
make any further impression, and was eventually well held. He is sure to
come on for the run, and is entitled to the same level of consideration
as the winner .... He shouldn't be too far away
- STORMING HOME Barry Hills Maktoum Al Maktoum
The final runner from the Barry Hills Stable, has a similar profile to
Perfect Sunday, having shown form at around 7fulongs as a two year old,
before stepping up on that this term. He won Epsom's Derby Trial as he
liked, before putting in a solid effort behind Dilshaan in the Dante
Stakes. Slightly outpaced when the Dilshaan, and Celtic Silence locked
horns at the three furlong marker, he regained his momentum at the
distance and was running on again at the finish. Again he has no
problems with the distance, and wont be disgrace
- SUNNY GLENN Nick Littmoden Mrs H F Mahr
Probably isn't being seriously considered as a Derby candidate,
particularly after his poor effort in the Lingfield Derby Trial ,
however Olden Times' win in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly on
Sunday, suggest that he may not be too far away (Olden Times didn't run
too badly in the Dante Stakes ). Additionally, he is bred to get much
further and was reportedly off colour in that Lingfield race..... He'd
need to have been to have any realistic chance here
- TOBOUGG (IRE) Saeed bin Suroor UAE Godolphin
Tobougg is probably Godolphin's third string after the defection of
Celtic Silence, and Equerry, however arguably he goes into the race with
as strong, if not stronger credentials having won the Group 1 Prix de la
Salamandre, at Longchamp, and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket (also
Group 1) when in the care of Mike Channon. As a result of that he was
sent out favourite for this season's 2000 Guineas, however he was very
uneasy that day in the market, and ran accordingly... running very flat,
and connections were unable to account for this poor effort. If he has
failed to train on he frankly has little chance of reversing placings
with Golan, however surely he is better than that, and whilst he isn't
certain to get this trip, his dam won the French Oaks, and his sire has
produced plenty of animals who stay further than he did ...... A lively
outsider, who could go well at a decent price
"T.H.E. R.O.O.K. " _ This race may revolve around the pace set
by Mr Combustible, as its fair to
suggest that there a few in this field who wouldnt want an end-to-end
gallop, which he may be capable of..... Richard Hills could have an
advantage that he may well choose to exploit. Expect stablemates Perfect
Sunday and Storming Home
to be handy, and Putra Sandhurst,
and Tobougg will be given every
chance. The first three in the market Dilshaan,
Golan and Galileo will
hopefully pay these the respect that they deserve, and not give these
too much leeway.
Similar to last term, this race may begin when they career into the
final straight ..... It quite conceivable that Perfect Sunday and Mr
Combustible may lead the charge for glory, and as they have posted
decent times/performances in their trials, they are going to be hard to
beat... its quite possible that its here where Galileo, Putra Sandhurst
and Golan may be found wanting... and whilst they will be staying on up
the final straight, they may not be good enough to bridge the gap. That
comment may not apply to Dilshaan, who should relish the challenge, and
if he close enough with a couple of furlongs to go, may well cut these
horses down for a deserved success..... He gets my vote from Galileo, Mr
Combustible and Tobougg may surprise those pundits who feel he wont get
home

Twosues, and Enrich look the likeliest winners of the race. If she gets
the run of the race then Sheppard's Watch; who won at Goodwood in May
beating Monnavanna by 1/2length looks the one to be on. She is preferred
to French raider Miliana, who might just be inconvenienced by the
trip/track. Matoaka, who may have plenty of use made of her having raced

the second is a particularly poor affair. Highland Reel, Digital, Little
Amin, J R Stevenson, Swift Dispersal Kareeb and Thihn, are the main
protagonists. You have to like the way that Little Amin, and Swift
Dispersal quickened up to win their respective races at Goodwood and
Sandown... Swift Dispersal impressed me the most, and she is the
likeliest winner, however I feel like taking a chance, and if you're
prepared to gamble then Digital (e/w) may be worthy of a closer look. He
ran to be frank deplorably at Goodwood last time out, but before that he
was an eye-catching second at Thirsk where he made up a significant
amount of ground in the final quarter to only just fail to get up. If he
gets the run of the race,..... he shouldn't be too far away

Ekraar should ensure that this is run a decent clip which should suit
1999 St Leger winner Mutafaweq who disappointed behind Stay Gold at Nad

Millenary proved he trained on when holding Sandmason at bay at

"T.H.E. R.O.O.K. " _ This looks very trappy to me, and who
knows what may happen .....however the stats don't immediately suggest
that we are likely to see a shock result. Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Imagine
looks to be the one to beat, with further improvement over
this longer trip almost assured. There are very few chinks in this
horse's amour, and she should go well.
There will be plenty amongst the crowd, who will be hoping that Flight
of Fancy can take this for Her Majesty The Queen. Like
Imagine this step up in trip will suit, and she didn't run too badly in
the Musidora at York (contrary to the verbal onslaught issued by the
Queen's racing Manager Lord Carnarvon, who clearly thought she was given
too much to do).... It was an educational run, and she will have learnt
a lot for the effort. The same applies to Relish
The Thought; who finished in front of Flight of Fancy that
day and should finish wherever the royal runner is placed
Others I like are;
-
Zanzibar,
who routed her field in the Italian Oaks;
-
Candice,
who was too free in the Lupe, and will come on for that effort,
-
Mot
Juste, and Tarfshi
who fought a great finish in the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket,
-
Silver
Grey Lady, who only just failed in the Lingfield Derby
Trial, and
-
Najah,
who will come on for her first effort at Leopardstown, and should
appreciate the extra distance
I suspect something
will make sure this isn't a crawl, so hopefully the best horse wins on
the day. Don't be too surprised if horses like Tarfshi, Zanzibar, and
Silver Grey Lady make a long run for home, especially with their stamina
assured. Whilst Imagine should pick these up, and I wouldnt be surprised
if the Musidora form is the most relevant formline... I expect a bold
bid from our 'horse to follow' Relish The Thought, however I think
Flight of Fancy will come on significantly for that effort and may give
Kieran Fallon some compensation for losing the ride on Golan in the
