"BREEDERS` CUP 2003"
 [The Featured Meeting]

Analysis & Selections by

"a rØøk"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er. _ LE GAGNANT?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

SANTA ANITA
Saturday, October 25.

Let me be brutally honest...

Since the death of my father in April, racing has been as far away from my thoughts as most things. It was his enthusiasm for the game that has enabled me to begin the "long road back" and I've given a lot of my focus this summer/autumn towards finding horses that I/we can follow during the national hunt season, via "ONE TO JUMP", plus eyeing up potential national hunt purchases for a few potential buyers.

I am not going to pretend hat I have given the American scene a lot of my focus and this is really my opinion of some of the excellent form available to punters.

¦¨¨¨¨"First¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 6.20 Breeders` Cup Distaff - Presented By Nextel (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies) £1250000 added, 3yo plus, 1mile~1f, penalty £650000, 7 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Sightseek, Got Koko, Elloluv and Take Charge Lady do appear to be the likeliest winners of the opening race of the Meeting. Got Koko' s defeat of Azeri in the Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap (Grade 2) over the course in September does look good on paper, however she is probably flattered as Azeri didn't run her race. She safely holds Elloluv who was 2½lengths behind her that day, however may not confirm LàCanada Stakes form with Sightseek, who since being beaten by her and has improved with each start winning four on the bounce, the most recent being when landing the Beldame Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park by 4½lengths from Bird Town at the beginning of the month.. she'll do for me.
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Sightseek,
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Got Koko,
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Take Charge Lady

¦¨¨¨¨"Second¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 6.55 Breeders` Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1) (2-Year-Olds Fillies) £625000 added, 2yo only, 1mile~½f, penalty £325000, 14 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Halfbridled, Class Above, Society Selection, Victory U.S.A., Forest Music, and Hollywood Story, appear to be the likeliest winners of the second of the card. The unbeaten filly Halfbridled will probably have been a strong favourite after her impressive win in the Oak Leaf Stakes (Grade 2) over course and distance in September, where she beat Tarlow by 4lengths, however her wide drawn will put plenty of punters off, and I suspect there will flood over to Class Above, who won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Turfway Park by 16lengths in September. Off the two I prefer Halfbridled. The eachway bet of the race may be Victory U.S.A. This daughter of Victory Cup, beat Hollywood Story on her debut at Del Mar in August, and ran her best race to date on her first attempt at this trip in the Frizette Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park at the beginning of the month, where after taking it up in the straight was out-battled by Society Selection, eventually going down by 1¼lengths... she may have further improvement to come at this sort of trip and can hopefully sneak into the frame.
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Halfbridled,
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Class Above,
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Victory U.S.A., [e/w]

¦¨¨¨¨"Third¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 7.35 Netjets Breeders` Cup Mile (Grade 1) (3yo+) £937500 added, 3yo plus, 1mile, penalty £487500, 14 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Special Ring, Oasis Dream, Designed For Luck, Peace Rules, Six Perfections, Sarafan, Perfect Soul, and Refuse To Bend, look best of those horses due to line-up for the Mile. On her day Six Perfections is top-class as she showed when landing the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le Buffard-Jacques le Marois (Group 1) at Deauville in August. She is the best miler in the line up, however like in the last race, plenty of punters will be put off of her because of her draw. Oasis Dream, on the other hand has an excellent draw and connections are certainly confident that this top class sprinter will be as effectively over today's trip. The reports from the States are certainly very encouraging and he shouldn't be underestimated, however a horse like Designed For Luck probably has all the bases covered as he should be able to follow the early pace and kick off of the final turn... If he gets past Oasis Dream, with say only a furlong to go he is going to be very hard to catch and in my view only Six Perfections has the gears to get past him.... I hope she wins, however I have a nasty feeling another tale of misfortune is heading her way..... Sarafan' s second in the Japan Cup to Falbrav also attracts the eye and if this horse is in shooting range there will be few horses finishing as quickly as him here.. He is probably the eachway value of the race.
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Designed For Luck
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Six Perfections
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Sarafan, [e/w]

¦¨¨¨¨"Fourth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 8.10 Breeders` Cup Sprint (Grade 1) (3yo+) £625000 added, 3yo plus, 6f, penalty £383500, 13 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Yankee Gentleman, Valid Video, Aldebaran, Shake You Down, Captain Squire, Midas Eyes, and Bluesthestandard, look best of those in a race I have no strong feeling towards. The ex- Henry Cecil trained Alderban catches the eye. This son of Mr. Prospector is better over further, however his win in the Forego Handicap (Grade 1) at Saratoga over 7furlongs was a decent effort and if the speedsters come back to him, I doubt they'd have the gears to repel him.. I'll go along with him
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Aldebaran,
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Shake You Down,
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Yankee Gentleman, [e/w]

¦¨¨¨¨"Fifth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 8.45 Breeders` Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) £625000 added, 3yo plus, 1mile~2f, penalty £344500, 12 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Islington, Musical Chimes, Heat Haze, Tates Creek, Mezzo Soprano, Voodoo Dancer, Bien Nicole, Dimitrova, Megahertz, and Yesterday, all have claims in a competitive looking renewal of the Breeders` Cup Filly & Mare Turf. As much as I like the claims of "our challengers" Islington, Mezzo Soprano and Dimitrova. Beverly D Stakes (Grade 1) winner Heat Haze, gets the vote. This ex French trained miler has won four of her six races in the USA, and was only a length behind Dimitrova in the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Parks having failed to get the runs of the race. If she gets to use her telling change of gears, she may be too strong for her rivals here. Mezzo Soprano has improved during the autumn and may be capable of nicking a place.
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Heat Haze,
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Voodoo Dancer,
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mezzo Soprano, [e/w]

¦¨¨¨¨"Sixth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 9.20 Bessemer Trust Breeders` Cup Juvenile (Grade 1) (2-Year-Olds Colts & Geldings) £937500 added, 2yo only, 1mile~½f, penalty £487500, 12 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Cuvee, Tiger Hunt, Race For Glory, Chapel Royal, Minister Eric, Capitano, Siphonizer, and Consecrate, are the most likeliest winners. Its very hard to get away from Cuvee, who has won four of his five races, the most recent being when landing the Futurity Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park by 8lengths from Value Plus. That sets a very high standard and he will be hard to beat here. Dermot Weld runs Relaxed Gesture, who was a decent second in the Beresford Stakes (Group 2) at the Curragh last timeout. If he translates that ability to the dirt he could be an interesting eachway bet here
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Cuvee,
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Tiger Hunt,
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Relaxed Gesture, [e/w]

¦¨¨¨¨"Seventh¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 9.55 John Deere Breeders` Cup Turf (Grade 1) (3yo+) £1250000 added, 3yo plus, 1mile~4f, penalty £689000, 9 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- The Breeders` Cup Turf appears to be the best chance of a win for the "away team", as only Storming Home, makes any appeal against the likes of Falbrav, High Chaparral, Sulamani, and Bright Sky. He has been in good form in the USA this season, since finishing well behind Falbrav in the Japan Cup at Nakayama last November, only tasting defeat in the Stewards room when being thrown out after crossing the line first in the Arlington Million XXI (Grade 1) in August, [the race being awarded to Sulamani]. He is better than ever, however Falbrav and Sulamani at their best ... over this distance, may have too many gears for him. Sulamani impressed when landing the Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park last month and appears to have been given the perfect prep, however Falbrav is steaming at present and this ex-Italian star is beginning to get the praise he deserved and despite some slight concerns about the final ½-ffurlongof this race has far too many ticks in other boxes to ignore him.
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Falbrav
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Sulamani
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Storming Home

¦¨¨¨¨"Eighth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨»-- 10.35 Breeders` Cup Classic - Powered By Dodge (Grade 1) (3yo+) £2500000 added, 3yo plus, 1mile~ 2f, penalty £1300000, 10 runners.
¦¨¨[ªT¨THE¨POST]¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦
¦¨¨"a rØøk"¨¨¦¨¨¨»--This appears to be quite an open renewal of the Breeders' Cup Classic... mainly because you can argue that the leading protagonist are better over shorter trips. I narrowe d it down to Medaglia D`Oro, Perfect Drift, Ten Most Wanted, Congaree, Funny Cide, and Hold That Tiger, and gave the nod to Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (Grade 2) winner Perfect Drift, over Kentucky Derby Winner Funny Cide. Although he was soundly beaten by Mineshaft, Hold That Tiger makes plenty of appeal as an eachway alternative.
¦¨¨1^ PLACE?¨¬¨THE WINNER?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Perfect Drift
¦¨¨2^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Funny Cide
¦¨¨3^ place?¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Hold That Tiger, [e/w]

15:15 PRIX LUPIN Pour poulains entiers et pouliches de 3 ans. Poids ...(2100 m 150000 Euro)
"With the advent of coverage of French racing on Attheraces, this season's renewal of the Prix Lupin arguably takes on even more significance as in Dalakhani, Super Celebré, New South Wales, Alberto Giacomettì and Ballestrinì we have five horses who could well figure significantly in either the English or French versions of the Derby. It also can give a good indicator as to which nation has the strongest form lines. I suspect there are many 'home punters' who could well be wading in here on either Ballestrinì, Alberto Giacomettì or even New South Wales, all of whom have been campaigned at Group level at 2 years of age in Ireland. In the case of Alberto Giacomettì and Ballestrinì, we know how good their form was from last term and have been given evidence of their well-being. After these two met three weeks ago at Leopardstown, where Ballestrinì was given the more judicious ride to make all from Alberto Giacomettì and Alamshar who probably were too interested in each other and as a result gave each other too much to do. There were five and a half lengths between these two on that occasion, and you would have thought that with 6lbs less on his back today, Alberto Giacomettì should reverse places, however the fact that Kieran Fallon has been booked to rider Ballestrinì here suggests to me that connections may well believe that he can repeat the dose, in which case it may pay to look elsewhere for victory. I like what I saw of New South Wales last term and I'll be fascinated to see how he fares here with the future in mind, however this should be fought out (in my view) between Dalakhani and Super Celebré. Dalakhani is unbeaten and has looked imperious so far in four outings. He beat Jipapibaquigrafo readily here last month and should be ready for this test, however it would be unwise to underestimate Super Celebré who has been brought on far more slowly by Eric Lellouche. He inflicted just as easy a victory on Jipapibaquigrafo here at the beginning of April and will give Dalakhani plenty to think about here. I expect this to be close, however I will stick with the likely favourite".

"France's first classic of the season has attracted a select field of ten and in the absence of Italian ace Le Vie Dei Colorì (who bar injury, would in my view have had a big say here], Clodovil, Bourbonnais, France, Catcher In The Rye, Desert Destiny, Elusive City and Sign Of The Wolf appear on paper to be the main protagonists. I do like Clodovil here, who did very little wrong when winning the Prix de Fontainebleau (gr. 3) here two week ago... I noted that the form of that race has been somewhat rubbished by certain UK pundits, because of Tomahawk's disappointing run in our Guineas, however Summer Diplomacy, who came second that day ahs come out and won since and this horse could do no more than remain unbeaten. He is preferred to Sign Of The Wolf, who is unbeaten and posted a good effort when beating Krataios [who reopposes] by a length, Bourbonnais, [who should come on from his first run in Dubai] and Catcher In The Rye, [unexposed and 3ll thought of apparently by connections]"

Grande Haies d`Auteuil Haies - The French Champion Hurdle {gr.1}
"Martin Pipe not only has got an outstanding chance of lifting the Prix RTL (Prix Hardatit) Haies, with Puntal, but he also has an even better chance of landing the Grande Haies d`Auteuil, Galant Moss, completely transformed since returning to race in France. He was unlucky not to land the Prix Jean Granel (Haies) last time here over 4100m 3½ weeks ago, when he made a bad mistake at the last, when still travelling well, allowing Spanish Wells to get past him on the run-in. Cristophe Pieux continues his association with Galant Moss, and having proven his ability to stay this trip (rarely run over in France) he has definite place claims. The race should be set up for him by Vic Toto, who could go well if he stays this extended trip and Kimbi, (difficult to catch right, but decent on his day as he proved when landing the in Prix Leon Rambaud (Haies) {gr. 2} earlier this year, beating Vic Toto). Galant Moss' main threat though is undoubtedly Laveron, vastly improved since returning to France. This ex German Group winner easily landed his maiden here spread eagling a field in the Prix Hubert de Navailles (Haies) at the beginning of April. He then stepped up on this when landing the Grande Haies de Printemps (Haies) (Handicap) here at the end of April. On that occasion, Laveron was handy throughout and quickened impressively when asked by Thierry Doumen between the last two obstacles. On his last start, he stalked Vic Toto before quickening to land the Gras Savoye Hipcover - Prix La Barka Haies {gr.2} here over 4300m. Despite the absence of Barracouda, Magnus and Le Sauvignon, this isn't too bad a renewal, ironically dominated by two horses who haven't shown anywhere near their true ability when they raced in this country. I would love to see Galant Moss win this, however Laveron has looked top class of late and I have to stay loyal to our "Horse to Follow".
Laveron quickened up close home to land the prize.

Galahan; who was third on his most recent start here two weeks ago, Divine Gesture, (who bettered that effort when finishing second on the same card), Legend of Anais, who finished third on his second start over hurdles at Enghien, but who has been well beaten since, and Anissia a promising sixth on her most recent attempt over obstacles, make most appeal in this claimer ... Divine Gesture just gets the call
