THE HOUGHTON MEETING - FEATURING THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE [H'CAP] 2002

Analysis & Selections by

  the rook

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Allinjim, Romany Prince, Fourth Dimension, Ruwaya, Miss Gigi, E Minor and Timing, can all be given chances in a trappy looking opener to the card, They are a consistent lot and finding the winning may not be easy, ALLINJIM, [who beat Old California at Ayr] and FOURTH DIMENSION, [who chased home King Eider at Sandown at the end of last month] can be expected to go close, however E MINOR, [who won impressively at Lingfield last time out in a 0-70 H'cap at the end of September] appears to be a horse that is still open to plenty of improvement ... she gets the vote.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Sheriff Shift, Latest Edition, Feather Boa, Little Malvern, Coracle King, Steelaninch, and Private Benjamin, look to have the best claims in the second. LATEST EDITION is the least exposed of these ... and also the horse that has grabbed my attention the most. That was on her latest start at Kempton, where after tracking the leasers on the stands' side, she quickened up nicely to beat Yafoul by 2lengths... She would need to improve on that to score, but I'd be hopeful that she was up to this task. FEATHER BOA, [3rd behind Tangled Up In Blue at Haydock last time out] and SHERIFF SHIFT, [second in a similar event at York to Irresistible] appear to be the main threats.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Latest Edition,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Feather Boa,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Sheriff Shift

¦ IIIª ¯ NEWMARKET ¦:¬>- Oh So Sharp Stakes (Listed Race) 10runners. 7f Penalty £13688 2-Year-Olds only fillies
|¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯¯the¯¯|¯¯post¯¯|¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- The third race on the card; a listed event looks particularly open. Soldera, Irresistible, Khulood, Amount, Bush Cat, Miss Takeortwo, and Frieda Kahlo, can be given chances of sort. KHULOOD, so impressively on her debut will be looking to bounce back after her disappointing effort last time out behind Wimple at Salisbury. This is arguably however a harder assignment, as IRRESISTIBLE, [who beat all bar Cheveley Park winner Airwave at Ayr at the Ayr Gold Cup meeting] and SOLDERA, [who made an impressive debut when she beat Tiber by 3lenbgths at the end of last month], provide stiff opposition.... Michael Bell's filly Irresistible lives up to her name here and gets the vote.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Irresistible,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Soldera,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Khulood,

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Dress To Thrill, Chorist, Fallen Star, Dolores, Spinnette, Mexican Hawk, and Miss Pinkerton, all can be given chances in the fourth - an interesting looking Group event for fillies. Dermot Weld's filly DRESS TO THRILL bids to maintain her unbeaten record this season here, having stayed on strongly to beat Marionnaud and Fallen Star [ who reopposes here] last time out at Leopardstown. She should go close here, however so should CHORIST, [second to Irresistible Jewel at the Curragh last time out], MEXICAN HAWK, [an easy winner at Bath last time out], DOLORES, [not seen out since chasing home Tashawak at Newmarket in July], MAMOUNIA, [who beat Hideaway Heroine at Doncaster], MISS PINKERTON, [who beat Mythic by 1/2lengths, (who reopposes) in a listed event at Sandown in August] and SPINNETTE, [a winner over course and distance in July]... if they run to their best form... in an open event Chorist gets the vote.

Zonergem, Funfair, Beauchamp Pilot, Lady Bear, Far Lane, Kirovski, I Cried For You, Atlantic Ace, Counsel's Opinion, Nashaab,
are likely to be amongst those heading the market for the latest renewal of the Tote Cambridgeshire. The race has been brought to light this term mainly due to the momentous gamble on Lady Herries' ZONERGEM , who was a ridiculously easy winner of a supposedly competitive handicap at Ascot last weekend.

His dislike of starting stalls in well publicised, and this was why Jamie Spencer left the blinds on until the stall began to open - a manoeuvre which cost him at least five lengths at the start. Despite this he could be spotted hard on the bridle literally fighting his rider to go faster. If you wanted to know where the racing term "going through the field like a knife through butter" could be best used it was this race as Zonergem weaved a charmed path to win going away, apparently with the proverbial on in hand.

He is now being backed as though defeat is out of the question however punters have two significant points to consider;

[1] He is very difficult at the start, and has lost races before here.
[2] Jamie Spencer, who rode a very confident race, is not available, so Darryll Holland is the man that is going to do the steering. I'm not convinced about this choice.., no disrespect to Darryll, he is riding at the peak of his ability, however I think he needs a very quite jockey on his back and I think personally that Shane Kelly, Royston Ffrench, or even dare I say Hayley Turner [one day a trainer is going to have the balls to put a good lady rider on a favourite for a race of this nature] would have been better choices for the horse

Good luck to Darryll, as he on a hiding to nothing, but this isn't going to be easy for him. He could be a long way ahead of the handicapper, however it is just as conceivable that he was greatly flattered by that effort ... whatever the case he is now a truely dreadful price.

I had a look for the "likely opposition".. and KIROVSKI;[ third to Solo Flight at Newbury], I CRIED FOR YOU. [the winner last year, who has been laid out for this]; FUNFAIR, [the winner at York last time out, where he beat Muchea by a short head] my old friend TAKES TUTU, [ still capable of a good shown despite having been on the good literally all season]; GOBLET OF FIRE, [second to Mahroos at Ascot at the end of last month]; FAR LANE; [only a short head behind Solo Flight at Newbury last time out]; and WAVERLEY, [a good second to Imbibing at Newbury in August]

Waverley is the most interesting, especially as he has managed to get in right at the foot of the handicap. Hughie Morrison's gelding has been a model of consistently this term and has run some excellent races this season = most recently in defeat. He raced over a longer trip which may be a worry however he has proven himself over ten furlongs. There wont be many horses that will be open to as much improvement as he probably is and I'm be tempted to have a few of my hard earned on him here.... He gets the vote.

There isn't any public form to go on, however Lady Betambeau; a full-sister to Lady Bear (a winner up to a mile) makes some appeal .. she gets a tentative vote.

I don't have a particularly strong view of the race, however Tychy who won nicely at Nottingham over six furlongs last time out could go well at eachway odds. Goodenough Mover and Alafzar, who both have been running well at this trip would be my "next bests"

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within 1/2Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
Surbiton obliged at 16/1.

EPSOM
Friday, June 7th 2002
KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30

THE DERBY 2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
