Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.
Whether it be
"the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Cal Mac, [seventh to Pentecost in the Britannia Handicap at the Royal Meeting, with Courageous Duke (who reopposes) back in ninth] Krugerrand, [second to
Magnifico over course and distance at the beginning of the month], Ashgar Sayyad [who finally lost his maiden tag at the eighth time of asking at Newcastle last time out] Wixoe Express, [upped in grade after a win on the sand 13 days ago], Mamounia, [placed on her last two starts, most recently behind Sentimental Value at Ripon], Ettrick Water, [an encouraging fourth on his reappearance in a "Mile on Sunday" qualifier on the Rowley course at the end of May]. All have claims in the opener. Cal Mac's credential look rock solid, however Wixoe Express stepping up in trip makes plenty of appeal. His bare form suggests that he has is all to do here, however Sir Mark Prescott is as shrewd as they come, and he wouldn't be here unless he thought his charge was capable of further improvement ... he gets the vote

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within
½Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>Surbiton, (e/w)

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Danehurst, Landseer, Malhub, Three Points, Bahamian Pirate and Meshaheer, all have claims in the main race of the meeting. You have to
respect the claims of Landseer - this year's French 2000 Guineas winner, who
lost nothing in defeat behind stablemate Rock Of Gibraltar in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He doesn't immediately strike me as a horse that wanted to be br ought back in distance, however he is a Group 1 winner and has to be respected. That comment
applies to Malhub, who won the Jubilee Stakes, (beating Danehurst by 1-½lengths), and Meshaheer, only
¾ lengths behind Just James at in the Jersey Stakes, having met trouble in running last time out. Danehurst does though look good. That run
behind Malhub will have bought here on and I'm quite confident of her reversing places with that individual... She
gets the vote
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>Danehurst
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬> Meshaheer,
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬>Millenium Dragon, (e/w)

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Ghannam, Green Line, Mine, Capricho, Uhoomagoo, Scotty's Future, Armagnac, Injaaz , Lincoln Dancer and Grey Eminence all have chances an open renewal of the Bunbury Cup. Ghannam, [second -
beaten a neck], and Green Line, [sixth, having met trouble in running - beaten 4
¼lengths], who both ran well behind Pentecost in the Britannia Stakes at the Royal Meeting, should again go well here... it wouldn't surprise me if they
again figured in the finish - this time Green Line (with ground conditions to suit), may just come out on top.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Green Line,
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬> Ghannam (U.S.A.),
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬> Mine,

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> As was the case yesterday, punters have a choice in race five as to whether they stick with public form in the shape of Fancy Lady, [placed on both starts most recently hen failing by a head to withhold the late challenge of Russian Rhythm on the Rowley at the end of June], or Burmese Princess, [just touched off at Windsor by debutante Buy the Sport - beaten a neck].... Alternatively, should they go for one of the newcomers? .... Garmoucheh, [a daughter of Silver Hawk, who is a half-sister to
three winners,] Illustria, [a daughter of Seeking The Gold - whose dam is very closely related to 2002 French Derby 3rd Simeon], Tresillian, [a half-sister to 5 winners, including Bianca Nera and Hotelgenie Dot Com,] For Freedom, [US stakes winners in her pedigree] and Judhoor [related to several winners - including Hasbah, Munir and Za-Im]. Fancy Lady has strong credentials, however she is vulnerable - if one of the newcomers can exploits the chinks already shown in her armoury .... The one horse than immediately strikes as possibly been able to do this is Illustria, and if the market were to speak favourable about her, I'd be inclined to go with her.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Illustria,
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬> Fancy Lady,

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Prompt Payment, Street Life, Kew Green, Shuwaib, Mamcazma, Afadan and Cosi Fan Tutte, all have chances in an open finale. Prompt
Payment, [not the easiest of rides, as she demonstrated at Leicester, when making having weather of beating Lord Eurolink by a short head], and Street Life, [another hard
ride, however he is more amenable - having won twice this term and he stayed on strongly behind Prize Winner at Sandown last time out]. Prompt Payment is in my view the better animal, however Street Life is more likely to knuckle down and land the spoils if push comes to shove..... Prompt Payment better be in a good mood!!!.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> With the ground likely to be riding on the slow side, this stamina test should be a severe test of stamina. Tholjanah, [64 lengths behind High Chaparral in the Derby, but is much better than that] Handa Island, [fifth in the Queen's Vase (Group 3), but has the ground gone against him?], Savannah Bay, [finished behind Handa Island, in the Queen's Vase and has it all to do on here], Old California, [finished behind both Handa Island and savannah Bay in that Ascot race, but showed at Haydock, the time before, that he revels in these conditions] and Gulf [another Queens Vase failure, who should like the ground] all have claims. I do like Old California, even though I do believe that Tholjanah may ultimately prove to be the best long-term prospect.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Old California,
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬> Gulf.
¦ 3rd Choice³ ¦:¬> Tholjanah,

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Mister Links, Harb, The Bonus King, Mazepa, Tacitus, Tizzy May, appear to be the horses to concentrate in the second. Master Links - unbeaten in both starts, most recently at Newby, where he put
3½ lengths between himself; Hilbre Island et al, and The Bonus King - who stayed on strongly to finish second to Baron's Pit in the Norfolk Stakes (Group 3) at the Royal Meeting make plenty of appeal. I'd be prepared to take a chance with Harb, beaten at odds-on on his debut at Nottingham, whop showed the benefit of experience when he went back and landed a maiden in good style a month later. He shouldn't mind this going and looks set to run a big race here ... he'll do for me.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Harb,
¦ 2nd Choice² ¦:¬> The Bonus King,

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> The third appears to be fiercely competitive.... Distinction, Football Crazy, Dimple Chad, Hallion, Harnour, Bonecrusher, Goblet of Fire, Royal Prodigy, Expected Bonus Tawoos, Harnour and Eric Le Beau all appear to have claims. Football Crazy, on a five-timer after winning at Sandown at the weekend, should go well again here, as should Distinction, and Dimple Chad, are closely matched on their form at Ripon in May. I like Tawoos (eachway). This daughter of Rainbow Quest won on her second start staying on stoutly to beat Shalamantika by a neck at
Haydock at the end of May. She then didn't run too badly behind Succinct in a listed race. Conditions should suit and Alec Stewart's charge should go well off of only 8st 8lbs. She is preferred to Distinction, Football Crazy, and top-weight Expected Bonus, who is another who could go well at a nice price.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Tawoos (FR), (e/w).

¾length back in fourth], Kootenay, [who made all to land the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom on Oaks day], Spring Star, [the winner of her last two starts, most recently the Prix de Sandringham (Group 2) at Chantilly at the beginning of June] Tashawak, [a most progressive filly, who won impressively on
the final day of the Royal Meeting] Disco Volante, [second to Esloob in the Pretty Polly Stakes (Listed Race) here at the Guineas Meeting] and Marionnaud [who won a decent handicap on Irish Derby Day, who had previously finished ninth in the Irish 1000 Guineas] all appear to have claims in this mile event. Kootenay who revels on it will make them all go, however Spring Star, Tashawak and Dolores, make more appeal. I really like Tashawak but wonder about her on this ground. Dolores gets a narrow vote.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Sarayat; a winning selection for us at Leicester at the end of May when he showed good speed throughout his debut, eventually stretching clear of Salome's Attack, to win by 3lengths, makes plenty of appeal in race five. He should go on this ground, and will make this field go. Regent's Secret, [who has finished twice on both his starts], and Greek Revival, [a winner last time out] are entitled to be considered, however sterner opposition will probably come form newcomers Bonus, [a son of Cadeaux Genereux out of a dam placed over 7f at two and winner over 7f at three], Fatik, [a son of Gone West, related to smart US dirt sprinter Kayrawan], Foss Way, [a son of Desert Prince, who dam is very closely related to smart 2yo/7-8f filly Danzigaway] and Royal Robe; [A son of King Of Kings by a winner in France at three over nine furlongs]. The newcomers will probably win races in the future, however Sarayat's experience may prove to be decisive.

Taffrail, unlucky in running on his reappearance at Newbury will prove to be popular, however surely this is a golden opportunity for Johnny Oscar to win a race. For a horse of his talent, his wins-to-run ratio is poor, however the trip and ground should suit. As long as Oscar Urbina doesn't employ the over exaggerated waiting tactics that so failed him when he was fifth at York 26 days ago, this combination will be extremely difficult to beat.... The problem is he's had penalty kicks before and wildly missed!!! .... Can't oppose him howevr. Dancing Bay, who finished third to Lady Two K and

desert Whistler and Budelli, [previous winning selections on the website] or Tommy Smith [on a hat trick after a brave win at York last time out] .... Budelli gets the vote .. I wouldn't be surprised if course and distance winner Brave Burt came back to form here and

withhold the late challenge of Calcutta at Salisbury 13 days ago) deserves to be favourite and will take plenty of catching here. However, this track/type of race tends to bring the best out of Topton. He should enjoy the strong end-to-end pace and should love picking his way through his rivals at the business end of the race. His recent form suggests that he should go close and is my selection. Stateroom, J R Stevenson and Paring are capable of bold bids and are worthy of each-way consideration.

You could make cases for several of these: Kool, Camp Commander, Lochridge, Johnny Ebeneezer, Mubaah, Morpheous, Feet So Fast, Fayr Jag, Impressive Flight, Tudor Wood, Artie, and Compton Dynamo all are worthy of a mention. Fayr Jag (who won a valuable handicap over course and distance) is sure to go well here as is Feet So Fast (who won a decent prize at Lingfield 59 days ago). They strike me as being the
likeliest winners of this event. Preference is for Willy Musson's runner. In an open affair, Salisbury-winner Lochridge, Mubaah (who ran creditably at Royal Ascot) and Kool could all go well at each-way prices.

On paper it appears to be wide open, however if the market is to be believed the most likely winner is Pearl Dance - a creditable 3rd behind Duty Paid in the Henry Carnarvon Stakes at the Royal Meeting. However she is likely to face stiff opposition from Never A Doubt and Presto Vento who finished 2nd and 6th respectively in the Queen Mary at the Royal Meeting and Zanoubia (a winner on her debut who since ran creditably in a listed race at
Maison-Lafitte). This faster surface should bring about a marked improvement in her performance however possibly not enough to keep Never A Doubt at Bay.

If all goes to plan, I would expect Yavana's Pace to set out and ensure that this is run at a true pace. I'd expect him to do this as this
maximizes Simeon's ability to exploit the 13lbs weight-for-age concession he has here. Assuming that he has got over the exertions of his good effort last time out when finishing a well-beaten but respectable 3rd to
Sulamani in the Prix Du Jockey Club (Group 1) at Chantilly I can see him making a long but decisive strike for home. If he does this, last year's St Leger winner

Bahamian Dancer - fifth to Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting and Dhabyan - second to Silver Seeker on his only start at Newmarket over six furlongs, are the only horses with any worthwhile form to go on, however Majestic Horizon, (a half-brother to Artists
Retreat, who is also related to winner between 7f-1m1f), Tycoon Hall, (a son of Halling, whose dam is a half-sister to high-class 8-10f performer Broken Hearted), Makhlab, Balkan Knight and Stressless are newcomers that could easily
