   "THE ST. LEGER MEETING"
 [The Featured Meeting]

Analysis & Selections by

"a rØøk"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

ST. LEGER MEETING at DONCASTER
Saturday, September 12.
¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"First¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 1.20 GNER Conditions Stakes (C) 6runners 6f Penalty £6182.80 2-Year-Olds only
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- The final day of the St. Leger Meeting begins with an intriguing conditions event where the potentially useful pair Golden Sahara and Kheleyf take on Autumn Pearl (the winner of her only start to date at Sandown in June). There was plenty to like about the manner in which Golden Sahara dispatched a field of maidens at Yarmouth last month and he is certain to improve for that experience. However, anyone who saw Kheleyf`s debut win at York in May (where he cruised home from 4 rivals who have all gone on to win subsequently) knows that his defeat at the hands of Russian Valour at Ascot may not be a true reflection of his ability. He definitely deserves an opportunity to atone for heavy losses last time out and is our selection.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Kheleyf
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Golden Sahara
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Autumn Pearl

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Second¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 1.50 Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes (A) (Group 2) 13runners 5f Penalty £36000 2-Year-Olds only
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- Probably not one of the better renewals of the Flying Childers Stakes, however interesting none the less. David Loder has strong claims of the double here as his runner Howick Falls is probably the form choice, particularly after his impressive win in a first-time visor at York last month where he put 3 1/2 lengths between himself and If Paradise. There is a possibility that he could go off at prohibitive odds therefore Boogie Street (who finished third behind Azarole, who ran so well yesterday in the Champagne Stakes) and China Eyes (who made all to win readily at Windsor in July) could both represent solid each-way alternatives. I'll take a chance and suggest Boogie Street here.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Boogie Street (e/w)
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Howick Falls
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- China Eyes

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Third¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 2.20 Porcelanosa Rated Stakes (B) [H`cap.] 16runners 1Mile- Penalty £12421.28 3-Year-Olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- The first of two trappy handicaps comes next. This one, over a mile could potentially be the more competitive (in terms of depth) of the two and no doubt cases can be made for the likes of Island Light, Calcutta, Muchea, Flighty Fellow, Norton, Terfel, El Coto, Golden Chalice, Certain Justice, Nuit Sombre and York Cliff. Nothing really stands out here however if I was persuaded to have a wager here, it probably would be on either Calcutta or Flighty Fellow, both of whom ran better than the final placings suggested they did last time out (as both of them met trouble in running). Flighty Fellow's ability to stay further could prove decisive. Nuit Sombre could be on the way back after a quiet period and certainly warrants each-way consideration.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Flighty Fellow
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Calcutta
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Nuit Sombre

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Fourth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 2.50 Ladbrokes.com Stakes (H`cap.) (C) 18runners 1Mile-2f 60yds Penalty £14950 3-Year-Olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- The second handicap on the card has eighteen runners but is probably less competitive. Arcalis (from Linda Ramsden`s yard) is almost certain to be a warm order here, particularly after the enormous punt on it last time out when it won at Newmarket. It is a horse that needs everything to go right though, and at current odds could be worth taking on. Two that interest me are Chantress (the most inexperienced horse in the race, this being only her fifth start) who comes here on the back of a smooth success at Chester last time out and East Tycoon (who showed decent form on the flat last season before showing plenty of promise over hurdles for Jonjo O'Neill). Both of these have it all to do to concede weight to Arcalis. If he is toppled, there is a good chance it's going to be by one of these. I'll take a chance and go with Chantress here.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Chantress
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Arcalis
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- East Tycoon (e/w)

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Fifth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 3.35 "SEABISCUIT" ST. LEGER STAKES (A) [Group 1] - 13runners 1Mile-6f 132yds Penalty £240000 3-Year-Olds only colts and fillies
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- A rather weak renewal of the St. Léger. A shame really. You could argue that the race probably should be worth more to entice the best middle-distance 3-year-olds to go for it...maybe there should be some price inducement linked to each leg of the Triple Crown which might have encouraged Kris Kin to run here instead of Longchamp. I digress. It's very difficult to get enthusiastic and to me, the whole race centres around whether you believe the favourite Brian Boru is good enough to win this. On last season's evidence, you think he would, however I have not been impressed with him at all this season and his tendency to hang into the rail (something he has done in each race this season) certainly gives rises to cause for concern. He could be still good enough to win, however there appears to be something not quite right about him and therefore it would be wrong of me to suggest you back a horse I feel may have a problem, be it physical or otherwise. The horses who do warrant consideration here are Phoenix Reach (unbeaten this season and who beat High Accolade by a head in the Gordon Stakes), Moments Of Joy (unbeaten and unexposed who stayed on well to win the March Stakes at Goodwood last time out), Westmorland Road (only beaten once this season and has been laid out for this by connections) and Maharib (a progressive colt who won a Group 3 at The Curragh from Aidan O'Brien's Arundel by 3/4 length). They're all similar types in that there is probably more improvement to come from them next year, however if I had to decide which one will do the job today, I'd probably marginally prefer Phoenix Reach to Moments Of Joy. Those looking for something to make the frame at a large price already have Maharib. You could also add High Accolade (very interesting at his best but very disappointing of late and appears to becoming more moody) or Salsalino (a frustrating sort who has run well on each start this season, including in group company, but has however found trouble on each occasion) into the equation. You wouldn' t be the least bit surprised if Salsalino made the frame as he is one of the few of these virtually guaranteed to be running on when others cry 'enough' and he has to get the each-way nod.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Phoenix Reach
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Moments Of Joy
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Salsalino (e/w)
¦ 4th Place? ¦:¬»-- Brian Boru

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Sixth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 4.15 Torne Valley Farm & Country Store H`cap. (B) 13runners 1Mile-4f Penalty £14092 3-Year-Olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- It would be nice on this day of classics if Henry Cecil were to get a winner on the card and he has a very good chance of doing this with his 4-year-old Bagan who belied odds of 50/1 to win a Class C handicap last time out at York. Connections have always believed he would develop into a useful handicapper this term and with the Cecil yard in good form at the moment, it does seem to make sense to stay loyal to him, even though Trouble At Bay (who stayed on well in the final furlong to beat Briareus at Ascot two weeks ago) and top-weight Counsel's Opinion (a course and distance winner who seems to put his best efforts in on galloping tracks) will give him plenty to think about.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Bagan (FR)
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Trouble At Bay
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Counsel's Opinion (e/w)

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Seventh¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 4.45 Trilogy Nightclub Doncaster Nursery H`cap. (D) 22runners 7f Penalty £7436 2-Year-Olds only
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- The finale makes only limited appeal and 'good luck' to those of you that believe that top-weight Overdrawn (only just touched off by Breathing Son last time out) can prevail here. He's not one for me and if I was going to have some interest here, it would probably be on something like Jomus who stayed on to finish two lengths behind Senor Bond at Carlisle last month. Have Faith and Eezaa Geezer (both have run well against Zweibrucken who won a similar event last time out at Sandown) also appeal and warrant each-way consideration.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Jomus
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Eezaa Geezer (e/w)
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Have Faith

THE FEATURE MEETING
Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps

DEDICATION

FURLONG TO GO would like to convey our condolences to the rook, whose father, George Edward Robertson passed away on 16th April 2003.

Mr. Robertson nurtured the rook's enthusiasm for this sport, and it was this inspiration, which is probably behind the creation of this website. As a permanent tribute to his memory, all the meetings covered under the "feature Meeting" banner will be dedicated to him... "Big George".

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within 1/2Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
Surbiton obliged at 16/1.

EPSOM
Friday, June 7th 2002
KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30

THE DERBY 2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
