TOTE SCOOP6 SUMMER PLATE [STEEPLE CH`]
  [The Feature Meeting]

Analysis & Selections by

"a rØøk"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday, July 19.
¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"First¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 1.35 Tote Exacta Summer Hurdle [B] [H` cap] 13runners 2Miles~1f 110yds Penalty £23200 4-Year-olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-Showpiece, Silvertown, Rigmarole, Hors La Loi, Prince Among Men, Ragdale Hall, Samsaam, Scarletti, Cosmic Case, and Latalomne make most appeal in the opening Tote Exacta Summer Hurdle. There should be a strong pace here, which should suit course and distance winner Showpiece, who readily put 8lengths between himself and Ei Ei in the Weatherbys Insurance Handicap Hurdle here a month ago. Silvertown, Rigmarole, Hors La Loi and Prince Among Men, have all been in fair form of late and will poise a big threat, however Showpiece looks to still be a step ahead of the handicapper and his telling final change of pace may well sway matters his way. Latalomne appeals as the possible eachway alternative
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Showpiece,
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Rigmarole,
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Latalomne, [e/w]

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Second¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 2.10 Mercedes-Benz Of Hull And Lincolnshire Commercial Juvenile Novices' Hurdle [D] 12runners 2Miles~1f 110yds Penalty £5525 3-Year-olds only
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- The first juvenile race of the season is a real poser as Martin Pipe introduces Figaro Du Rocher, a distance winner of his only start at Vichy a month ago into the fray. Quite what Figaro Du Rocher achieved that day is debatable and he has to concede weight here, however that experience is valuable and I think he'll oblige, however Lucky Leo, Creed, Blue Venture, and Boss Man may be worth having a second interest in.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»--Figaro Du Rocher (FR),
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Boss Man, [e/w]
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Blue Venture

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Third¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 2.40 Gilbert And Molly King Memorial H.B.L.B H` cap Steeple ch` [D] 9runners 2Miles~1f 110yds Penalty £8190 5-Year-olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- Quite a poor handicap comes next, despite the good money on offer. Dual Star, Night Fighter, Merry Minstrel, Toulon Crest, Canadiane, Bungee Jumper, Gue Au Loup and Jamorin Dancer, have all shown little bits of form which entitle them to be considered here. Dual Star is still 6lbs higher than when winning twice early last season, however he is fresh and likely to go well here. Off of only 10st-0lbs, he looks the most appealing of these. Topweight Canadiane, and Gue Au Loup may give him most to think about.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Dual Star
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Canadiane (FR)
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Gue Au Loup

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Fourth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 3.10 Jewson Novices' Hurdle [Series Qualifier] [D] 5runners 2Miles~1f 110yds Penalty £5492.50 4-Year-olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»--Only five runners line up for race four, however Feel The Pride, Ela Re, and Gabla, all can be given chances her. Feel The Pride is the likely favourite after two wins at Uttoxeter and most recently Stratford, where he beat Conroy by 7lengths, however you could argue that Ela Re ahs the stronger form, especially if you forgive a sub standard effort behind Showpiece here last time out. I'd be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, although I do think Gabla has plenty of scope for improvement and should be dismissed lightly
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Ela Re
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Feel The Pride
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Gabla (NZ)

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Fifth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 3.40 TOTE SCOOP6 SUMMER PLATE [H` cap] [B] [Steeple ch` ] 16runners 2Miles~4f Penalty £40600 5-Year-olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦¨¨¨¨ "one¨to¨jump"¨¨¨¨ ¦ ¬: Are there any horses from "ONE TO JUMP 2003/4" - Our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the current national hunt season? ¦:¬»-- Cobbet (CZE)
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- This season's renewal of the Summer Plate has attracted one of its strongest fields. Brother Joe, Ballycassidy, Chicuelo, Cobbet, Duke Of Buckingham, Il Capitano, Banjo Hill, Ei Ei, Ichi Beau, Kaki Crazy, and Xaipete, seem to be the horses to concentrate on. Ei EI and Kaki Crazy are likely to make this a particularly strongly run affair and that is going to suit those horses which come from behind... [its hard to imagine . Ei EI and Kaki Crazy being good enough to make all]. This will test Brother Joe, and Chicuelo' s jumping to the limit, however should both of these get around without much mishap they do have the potential to go close... I dont believe they will prevail and as such look poor value... I wouldnt however say that about Cobbet, Duke Of Buckingham, and Banjo Hill, who all come into the race in good heart. Duke Of Buckingham's defeat of Santenay at Warwick in May looks very strong and if this novice holds his from, he has to be the best eachway value in the race, however its another novice Cobbet, who gets my vote. Many will have forgotten his win in the Nicholson Holman Cup Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in April, however anyone who has the footage of how he travelled before cruising past Korakor to win by 12lengths, will agree he won this race in the manner of a horse who could be ahead of the handicapper. This has been his aim ever since, and two wins over fences at the beginning of this term will have boosted the confidence. If he stays [a slight doubt] he must go close and I cant oppose him here.
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Cobbet (CZE)
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Duke Of Buckingham, [e/w]
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Banjo Hill
¦ 4th Place? ¦:¬»-- Chicuelo (FR)

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Sixth¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 4.10 Morton's Print Novices' Steeple ch` [D] 7runners 2Miles~4f Penalty £6734 5-Year-olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- Seven line-up for the penultimate race of the meeting and to be honest only Dream With Me, Wagner, and Colquhoun, make any appeal. Dream With Me, has been put in as the favourite despite finishing behind Colquhoun, last time at Newton Abbot. I dont believe that was his true form and I'd be confident of him reversing these placings. He'll need to be on form to beat Wagner, who makes his chasing debut here. Wagner is a progressive sort whose already won over hurdles this term at Newton Abbot before finishing a good second to Captain Zinzan at Worcester three weeks ago. If Wagner takes to them, he should go close, however superior hurdles ability and chasing experience will probably prevail [just!!].
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Dream With Me,
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Wagner
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Colquhoun,

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨"Seventh¨Race"¨¨¨¨¨¨¦¨¨¨¨¨¨»-- 4.45 Maureen Davis Memorial H` cap Hurdle [D] 9runners 2Miles~6f Penalty £8138 4-Year-olds plus
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªt¯¯|¯the¯|¯post¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ "a rØøk" ¦:¬»-- Nine runners are due to line up in the finale. Of these, Canada, Anzal, Haystacks, Blackchurch Mist, Hawkes Run, Dat My Horse, and Meldrum Star make most appeal. Canada will no doubt prove to be popular after his recent good efforts on the level, however he has plenty of weight here and the improving Anzal, [whose already won twice this term at Exeter and Worcester], may be able to pick him off here, in receipt of 26lbs from the Nicholashayne representative. Ewan Williams and Sue Smith's yard are in rude health and either Meldrum Star and Dat My Horse could be interesting eachway alternatives
¦ ¹ST PLACE ¬ THE WINNER? ¦:¬»-- Anzal,
¦ ²nd Place? ¦:¬»-- Dat My Horse, [e/w]
¦ ³rd Place? ¦:¬»-- Meldrum Star.

DEDICATION

FURLONG TO GO would like to convey our condolences to the rØøk, whose father, George Edward Robertson passed away on 16th April 2003.

Mr Robertson nurtured the rØøk's enthusiasm for this sport, and it was this inspiration, which is probably behind the creation of this website. As a permanent tribute to his memory, all the meetings covered under the "feature Meeting" banner will be dedicated to him... "Big George".

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices' Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.
Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with "A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27 days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he'd have been an excellent eachway wager}.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Mount Gay,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Misty Ridge,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Ashgar [USA],

Mount Gay obliged at odds of 7/1.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 20th July
Tote Scoop6 Summer Plate. (H'cap Steeple Ch.). £65000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f, 16 runners.
"As much as I like Demasta, there is so much pace here, that I cant help but think that the front runners may go too fast for their own good here. It makes sense [in my view], to be looking for something likely to be able to travel well... and despite my very negative comments above... I have (since the runners were declared), had a lot of time for the chance of Chicuelo (at eachway odds). I think some horses suit certain trainers, and I think this horse has a better chance of winning a race like this with Martin Pipe than Ian Williams - not because I necessarily think Pipe is a far better trainer than Williams is... its more to do with understanding this type of horse. Nicholashayne - more than most training establishments - does particularly with their foreign purchases. I think this is in part because due to the amount of time/effort they have invested into studying not only french form, but also how certain trainers educate their young horses - adopting if/when necessary previous regime/style of training. Secondly, (more importantly), some french breds improve after a season's acclimatization. A look at this horse's form in France and you'll find, for example, his good third to Sleeping Night and Ilnamar (beaten 8½lengths) in the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Grade 3) , or his third to Sleeping Night and Douze Douze in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase Des 4 Ans (Chase) (Grade 1) in November 2000. He has certainly been given a chance here off of only a handicap rating of 116, and I can't see him not finishing in the first four.... He'll do for me".
"ANOTHER WINNER FOR "ONE TO JUMP 2003"
