Whether
it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs,
we will
attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied
horses participating each day and their characteristics and
requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner
or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular fancy
of yours ... it may even convince you to back some of those horses which
we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims.
whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS
- For each race, I have given you who, in my view, are the
likeliest winners, as well as horses who could run well at eachway odds.
'R#ecommended'
horses have, in our view, the best chances of success each day. Any
horses from our 'Horses To Follow' list are shown at the foot of each
race's analysis. POSTING TIMES FOR SELECTIONS__
Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the
previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other
commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings
unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps
NEWBURY
Saturday 10th February
1:00 cantorindex.com Novices' Chase Class C
THE ROOK _ Behrajan, Frantic Tan, Somemanforoneman, and Jolly Green Giant, all are also engaged at Haydock, but would be the ones to concentrate on if they all turned up. Behrajan, is the likely winner although I still have the vision of him typing up
dramatically up the cheltenham hill, and it s a pity that any stamina limitations are unlikely to be exposed. Interestingly I think Jolly Green Giant, is a vastly improved sort, and this big gelding would give him more of a battle than most
observers might anticipate if he ran.
'No.1 Choice' _ Behrajan
'(e/w) Alternative' _
Runner(s) listed in our 'HORSES TO FOLLOW' feature _ Jolly Green Giant,
1:30 Mitsubishi Shogun Game Spirit Chase Class A Grade 2
THE ROOK _Function Dream is getting better all the time and she did impress when winning the Victor
Chandler Chase last time out, travelling well throughout and staying on strongly off of a strong pace. If she is a serious Queen Mother Chase candidate she must win, or at least run well against Flagship Uberailles here receiving 4lbs more than weight for age. I wouldnt be surprised if this big mare goes close here, and I'll take here to pip Flagship Uberailles who
shouldn't be far away if reproducing his Tingle Creek form
'No.1 Choice' _ Function Dream
'(e/w) Alternative' _
2:00 Aon Chase Class B
THE ROOK _First Gold, will win the Aon Chase, if he reproduces his Kempton form,
however it should be stated that there is a good chance that he may not impress as much here, and the underfoot conditions may inconvenience him. It also
will be interesting to see whether Shotgun Willy attempts to unruffle him, which is still a question that needs to be answered with
Cheltenham in mind
'No.1 Choice' _ First Gold
'(e/w) Alternative' _
Runner(s) listed in our 'HORSES TO FOLLOW' feature _ First Gold, Shotgun Willy,
2:35 Tote Gold Trophy Hurdle Showcase Handicap Class A (Grade 3)
THE ROOK _ Pundits have stated all week, that traditionally this race is won by
horses at the top pf the handicap. Does this season's race break that mould?.. Here are the horses I'd consider.
AUETALER: A good indicator of how good this race is. Auetaler usually goes well fresh, and must have e/w claims on his pattern race form, and
isn't as burdened with weight as it first appears.
MR COOL: Course specialist who beat market rival Hulysse Royal by 5lengths in a tactical affair last time out. Must go well, but is likely to be taken on for the lead here, and may not last home ... dangerous however if he does
THE FRENCH FURZE: Ran respectably though well beaten behind Barton at Newcastle in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle in November. He is another e/w possible but is likely to find one of two too good again here
HIT AND RUN: Ran well in this event last year, and behind Red Guard at Ascot in January, but may be the key to Mr Cool's demise or success
HULYSSE ROYAL: Has a bit to find with Mr Cool on their meting here last time out, but that was a tactical affair, and
he will be far better suited by the pace of this race
MASTER TERN: Finished 13lengths behind Landing Light at Cheltenham last time out, and has a bit to find on that form, but he proven in this sort of event and it wouldnt surprise me if he finished a lot closer today
COPELAND: Finished 9lengths behind Landing Light at Cheltenham last time out, and also has a bit to find on that form, however he is weighted to
finished closer to him here, and carried a nice racing weight here (10-8) rather than the 11-10 he carried that day. Entitled to eachway consideration
GRINKOV: 3lengths winner of the Pierse Hurdle, who should be suited by the strong pace of the race
MILLIGAN: Lost nothing defeat behind Male-Ana-Mou here in November, and goes well fresh
ROOSTER BOOSTER: may be interesting if he manages to lay up with the pace here, as he stayed on to good effect behind Grinkov in the
Pierse Hurdle
LANDING LIGHT: Travelled well and ran on well despite hanging up the run-in to beat La Landiere by 6lenths at
Cheltenham. Has a favourites chance, and must go well.
RED GUARD: Stayed on well to beat Hit And Run at Ascot last time out, and has eachway claims.
FERRERS: Stayed on well to beat Rooster Booster by 1/2length at Cheltenham in December. He is a few pounds 'wrong', but
isn't without hope.
SELECTION __Landing Light, Mr Cool, Grinkov, and Hulysse Royal make most appeal to me. If he handles the ground then Landing Light (still being talked up as a Champion
Hurdle horse, in some quarters) should justify faith in including this unexposed horse in our Horse To Follow Section, and is
preferred to Hulysse Royal. Martin Pipe has an extremely strong hand here, and you can make a case for almost all of these at eachway odds. I'll be brave and go with the topweight Auetaler and hope that his class carried him into a place,
though the more sensible of you may prefer Hulysse Royal
'No.1 Choice' _ Landing Light
'R#ecommended'
'(e/w) Alternative' _Hulysse Royal
LONG*SHOT_ Auetaler
Runner(s) listed in our 'HORSES TO FOLLOW' feature _ Auetaler, Landing Light
3:05 Lansdowne Club Novices' Hurdle Class C
THE ROOK _This is a awfully hard race to call. Konker, Fondmort, and Maximus, are all
horse that I like who should pay their way over the coming seasons. Impek' s
saunter home is a timely reminder of how good Fondmort may be and he is marginally preferred to Maximus. Bilboquet, has some interesting bits of form
in France, and it should be interesting to see how he fares here today
'No.1 Choice' _ Fondmort,
'(e/w) Alternative' _ Bilboquet,
Runner(s) listed in our 'HORSES TO FOLLOW' feature _ Michel De Moeurs
Runner(s) listed in our 'FOCUS ON FRANCE' feature _Bilboquet,
3:35 ET's 60th Birthday Handicap Hurdle Class C
THE ROOK _Old Rouvel, Sau-Mynde, Wain Mountain, Christy's Pride, Profluent, Quickswood, are the likeliest winners in an unappealing
handicap hurdle. Old Rouvel, is thrown in on his old form, and this recent Kempton winner has a great
chance of following up here. He is the selection over Wain Mountain
'No.1 Choice' _ Old Rouvel,
'(e/w) Alternative' _ Deymiar
4:05 Bury's Bank Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race Class B
THE ROOK _ Jameson is a horse 'Furlong To Go' expects big things of in the future, and he has strong claims here, and despite a long
absence I expect him to hold recent winners Miss Cool, Armageddon, Dungarvans Choice, Let's Fly, at bay.
'No.1 Choice' _ Jameson
'(e/w) Alternative' _ Lets Fly
Runner(s) listed in our 'HORSES TO FOLLOW' feature _Jameson, Lets Fly
