Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er CHOICE), as well as the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON
Saturday 7th September
¦ Iª ¯STRATFORD-UPON-AVON ¦:¬>- 1:55 Matt Jones J-Plan Diet Conditional Jockeys' Selling H' cap Hurdle
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Eastwood Drifter, Mankind, Redouble, Beedulup, Doyenne, Dinky Dora, Notty, Star Blakeney, Ambidextrous, Rolfes Delight, Velmez, Light Programme and South West Express all have chances in an open Selling Handicap Hurdle. Eastwood Drifter ran well at Fontwell behind Miss Lacroix, however that isn't the greatest form and Beedulup, [an easy winner at Cartmel] and Doyenne, [a good effort second under rules at Newton Abbot since a couple of season's pointing] can certainly go close here.... Beedelup is a horse that I've liked (he was in "ONE TO JUMP 2001" as a potentially chaser). He is the least exposed of these and trainer Alan Moore appears to have found another winning opportunity.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Beedulup,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Doyenne,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Eastwood Drifter,

¦ IIª ¯STRATFORD-UPON-AVON ¦:¬>- 2:25 Pardys' Dairies Novices' Steeple Ch.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> With Mr Lamb, and Strong Finish possibly missing this event if there isn't enough rain overnight. This looks to be between Ricko and Boogy Woogy. Fortuitous Newton Abbot winner Ricko. [benefited from Lincoln Place's x-rated fall at the last] has to carry a penalty for that effort and that gifts it to Boogy Woogy, who ran several good races over fences last term [his best effort was arguably behind Man on the Hill at sedgefield in November]. I would be interested if Mr Lamb ran. This former Martin Pipe inmate went to pieces over hurdles after looking so promising in bumpers. He is still young enough to bounce back and it wouldnt surprise me if he went well
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Boogy Woogy.
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Mr Lamb,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Ricko

¦ IIIª ¯STRATFORD-UPON-AVON ¦:¬>- 2:55 J.P. Seafoods Juvenile Novices' Hurdle £6000 added, 3yo only, 2m 110yds, penalty £4238, 16 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Girl Of Pleasure, Dazzling Rio, Hurricane Coast, Park City, Silver Buzzard, Zamorin, Londolozi Lad, Red Forest, and Galant Eye look best in the third race on the card. Girl Of Pleasure isn't the greatest of jumpers however she sets a fair standard here having won over course and distance before chasing home useful recruit Red Halo again over the course last month. Her penalty leaves her somewhat vulnerable and Dazzling Rio, (from a stable that has already produced a dual juvenile winner over obstacles] and Silver Buzzard, [very attractively bred gelding, with very little mileage on the clock] make plenty of appeal. Silver Buzzard, (eachway) is the selection.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Silver Buzzard, [e/w]
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Dazzling Rio,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Girl Of Pleasure,

¦ IVª ¯STRATFORD-UPON-AVON ¦:¬>- 3:25 Golden Drum H' cap Steeple Ch. £12000 added, 5yo plus, 3m, penalty £8138, 5 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Gaysun, Maxie McDonald, Haydn James, Nosam, and Stanmore all have chances of sorts in the fourth. Haydn James has been in good form over both codes during the summer months, and should again go well here, however Gaysun, [a good second at Worcester], Maxie McDonald, [a winner twice last summer] and Stanmore [a winner last time at Southwell] may be too strong for him... I'll take Maxie McDonald's fitness on trust.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Maxie McDonald,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Gaysun,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Stanmore

¦ Vª ¯STRATFORD-UPON-AVON ¦:¬>- 4:00 U.S. Bank H' cap Steeple Ch. £8000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 1f 110yds, penalty £5473, 8 runners.

¦ (ONE TO JUMP 2003) - are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season?¦:¬>- Hesk (FR)
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Saragann, Hesk, Ei Ei, Moon Glow, Noble Comic, Percy Parkeeper, Nephite, and Kassala all have chance in this open-looking handicap chase. By far the most interesting of these is Hesk. This former French-trained gelding ran up a four-timer at the beginning of the 2000/1 season... then took a heavy fall at Chepstow..... He possessed plenty of ability and could still make an impact here, however confidence is the key with him. He took some heavy falls in France (particularly at Auteuil .. about the last place you'd want that to occur), and I think objective number one here will be the clear round. I think he can score (if he jumps a clear round, however the market will surely be the best guide to his chances (especially with that 700-odd day lay-off to overcome.... Saragann, is the likeliest to oblige if he fails to complete, which Ei Ei should stretch these and makes plenty of appeal at possible eachway odds
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>, Hesk (FR)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Saragann
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Ei Ei, [e/w]

¦ VIª ¯STRATFORD-UPON-AVON ¦:¬>- 4:35 John Smith's H' cap Hurdle £7000 added, 4yo plus, 2m 110yds, penalty £4810, 6 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> A small , but select field line up for the sixth on the card.... Virgin Soldier, Valfonic, Apadi, and Frederic Forever, make most appeal of the six runners who line up here. Frederic Forever should (going by last term) ensure that this is run at a fair pace, which should his three main opponents. Virgin Soldier, [ a prolific winner on the Flat] is the least exposed of these (in terms of races) over hurdles and if he were to reproduce his hurdles form of last December he should go close here.... He hasn't run that well on the flat however and I'd take a chance that Valfonic could return to form ... although he will need to improve ignorantly on his last time out effort (tailed off at Newton Abbot) to figure here.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Valfonic,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Virgin Soldier,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Apadi,

¦ VIIª ¯STRATFORD-UPON-AVON ¦:¬>- 5:10 John Smith's 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯ªt¯¯¯|¯¯¯the¯¯¯|¯¯¯post¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬> Special Present, Moon Spinner, Lord Alvinru, Sammy Samba, Cosmic Flight, Joshua's Bay, Cool Roxy, Hidden Exit, and Simoski have chances of sorts in the finale. The frustrating mare Moon Spinner has another opportunity to lose her maiden tag, however she is paceless and is always going to be vulnerable, even in a weak race like this. Lord Alvinru [beaten out of sight by Ta Ta for Now at Perth last time out] and Special Present [second at Worcester in a bumper] look better prospects. I'm surprised that Special Present is out so early in the season. His second to the well regarded Cappadrummin in a bumper at Kempton in February stands out here.. his Worcester effort was frankly disappointing, however he has to be given another chance to atone... he is the selection
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Special Present,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬> Lord Alvinru, [e/w]
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬> Moon Spinner,

Newbury

2:15 TFM Cyntergy H' cap (For The London Gold Cup) £20000 added, 3yo only, 1m 3f 5yds, penalty £12934, 13 runners.
Shagraan (4th to Malacary at Newmarket on his latest start), Favourable Man (winner over 1m 4f at Catterick 24 days ago), Epicentre (the winner of a Bath maiden on his seasonal reappearance), Starzaan (a winner over 10f at Windsor 26 days ago), Tertullian and Dune are my fancies for this 11 furlong event. Shagraan' s form was confirmed by the winner earlier in the week and he is just preferred to top-weight Fashionable Man.

Shagraan won at 5/1

2:45 Grundon Stakes (Registered As The Aston Park Stakes) (Listed Race) £25000 added, 4yo plus, 1m 5f 61yds, penalty £15196, 6 runners.
A trappy little affair comes next. At their best, you could make a case for each of the 6 starters. Dawari (last seen behind Mr Combustible at Chester 375 days ago) and Art Gale (who disappointed over hurdles this winter) both appear as though this effort will bring them on, however, I won't be surprised if this develops into a match between High-Pitched and First Ballot....for all of First Ballot's battling qualities (he really did impress under top-weight at the guineas meeting), I think that High Pitched who developed into a decent handicapper last year will have come on enough for his first effort behind Marian Bard at Newmarket to be able to concede 6lbs all round here.
High Pitched won at 4/1

3:20 LOCKINGE STAKES - {Group.1} £172000 added, 4yo plus, 1m, penalty £99760, 10 runners.
Assuming Summoner (or for that matter Atavus) sets out to make this a truly run affair, then this race should develop into a battle between Noverre (one of last season's better 3-year-old milers who was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Terre A Terre at Nad Al Sheba) , No Excuse Needed (another decent miler who needs to improve on his disappointing 15th behind Terre A Terre and Noverre at Nad Al Sheba), Olden Time (Not seen out since finishing behind Slickly at Longchamp in September) and Keltos (who bounced back to somewhere like his best when winning at Saint Cloud last time out). There is no doubt that Noverre is a really useful individual, however, I believe Keltos is currently overpriced. The race should be run to suit this big nearly-white "grey" gelding and he appears to warrant (at the very least) each way consideration.
Keltos won at 9/1
