THE WHITBREAD GOLD CUP CHASE 2001 -

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular fancy of yours ... it may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, I have given you who, in my view, are the likeliest winners, as well as horses who could run well at eachway odds. 'R#ecommended' horses have, in our view, the best chances of success each day. Any horses from our 'Horses To Follow' list are shown at the foot of each race's analysis. POSTING TIMES FOR SELECTIONS__ Selections for Monday - Friday should be available after 9:30pm the previous evening, however on Saturday and Sunday due to other commitments won't be posted until after 8:30am those respective mornings unless otherwise stated. Hopefully this helps

SANDOWN PARK
Saturday 28th April
2:15 Coral Eurobet Championship Hurdle Class A Grade 1
Runner[s] from our N.H. 'Horses to Follow' feature__ Landing Light, and Geos
Runner[s] from our 'Focus on France' feature__ Bilboa
"THE ROOK " _This could be a tactical race if Teeatral is ridden with restraint. He and Hors La Loi III, may be compelled to lead which may set the race up for Geos, Barton, Valiramix Bilboa, and Montalcino. two of the most impressive winners at this distance this term, came in races off of a slow pace; Bilboa sprinted away at Kempton, and Geos who we supported to victory in the Bula Hurdle... It wouldnt surprise me if they fought pout the finish again, and the fresher Geos is just preferred. Valiramix, and Montalcino are relatively lightly raced this term, and have good form going into this event... Don't be surprised if Valiramix, and Montalcino. are in the thick of the f9insih ....Valiramix who ran a great race in the Imperial Cup off of 12-0, gets the eachway vote.
"1st * Choice" _ Geos
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Valiramix

2:50 ladbrokescasino.com Championship Chase Class A Grade 1
Runner[s] from our N.H. 'Horses to Follow' feature__ Tiutchev, Fadalko
"THE ROOK " _With Edredon Bleu likely to be dictate a decent clip he will be very hard to beat. Tiutchev, Fadalko, Flagship Uberalles and Function Dream, will need to be at their best to peg this leader back. This may not be likely as Tiutchev, (indifferent form, and a fall last time out), Flagship Uberalles and Function Dream (indifferent form, and the stables are both running below expectations). That isn't the case with Fadalko, who sauntered to victory at Aintree over 2m4f ... if the heavens open, he may be the one to be on here
"1st * Choice" _Fadalko
"(e/w) Alternative" _

3:30 45th Whitbread Gold Cup Chase Showcase Handicap Class A Grade 3
Runner[s] from our N.H. 'Horses to Follow' feature__ Ad Hoc, Heidi III
"THE ROOK " _The 45th renewal of the Whitbread Gold Cup Chase looks an open affair. Last year's winner Beau, What's Up Boys, Kingsmark, Arctic Camper, Heidi Ad Hoc, Jocks Cross, Inn At The Top, Mighty Moss, Browjoshy, Samuel Wilderspin, Storm Damage, Djeddah, The Land Agent, and Dark Stranger, all are entitled to close scrutiny.

There has been strong words all week for Arctic Camper who ran at Aintree last time, Kingsmark, who won that race, Beau who must have gone close in the National had he have stood up, though that has to be put into perspective with the events of the race, and What's Up Boys the conqueror of Shotgun Willy. All of these hard races, as did Ad Hoc who ran a great race in the Scottish National last weekend. It is possible that the edge has been taken off of some of these.

If I were to pick from these, then Ad Hoc's class could see him go close. The same applies to Beau though surely his welter burden will hold him back, and Kingsmark if the heavens open. I expect these to go well, however these three will have to mix it with Heidi III, who is getting better all the time, and Mighty Moss, who is fresh after a promising seasonal debut at Wetherby 12 days ago, and like Last Option who we nominated last week, is another hunter chaser who appears well treated in a handicap. I wouldnt be surprised if one of these took the spoils ... Heidi III just gets the vote
"1st * Choice" _Heidi III
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Mighty Moss
"LONG*SHOT!!!"_Djeddah

The Flatman has previewed the race, which has been posted on his webpage  ...continued

4:10 cantorindex.com Classic Trial Class A (Group 3)
"THE ROOK " _Although historically this is an informative trail with regard to the Derby and the other top 1m4f contests later in the season, I'm not certain that this will necessarily be the case this  year, with all the dreadful weather we have been having. That isn't a reflection of those runners who line up, and it possible to make a case for Chancellor, Asian Heights, Herodotus, Gryffindor, and Worthily. Herodotus certainly created a favourable impression when winning the Easter stakes on his debut, however I'd question how good that form actually is. Chancellor, and Asian Heights, are equally unexposed, and the latter, who beat Wannabe Around by 1/2l, at Lingfield on his debut is marginally preferred
"1st * Choice" _Asian Heights
"(e/w) Alternative" _

4:40 Mitsubishi Shogun Handicap Chase Class B
Runner[s] from our N.H. 'Horses to Follow' feature__ Red Striker, Gallant Moss, Satchmo, and Catfish Keith
"THE ROOK " _A realty competitive handicap chase comes next, which initially looks certain to be fiercely competitive from the tape-rise; Paperising, Goguenard, Grey Shot, Native Wit, Red Striker, Satchmo, Wise King, Bramblehill Duke, Just Jasmine, Super Tactics, Flying Instructor, Galant Moss, Catfish Keith, Skycab, and Super Coin, attracted my attention. Satchmo could take a lot of pegging back if he gets into a rhythm here, however the pacesetters do appear to be setting up the race for Paperising, Goguenard Red Striker, and Galant Moss. The first two named must go close but endured hard races at Aintree which may have left their marks. Red Striker only the other hand won with a tin in hand at Aintree, and was eased down when beaten at Haydock last time out. He handles conditions and hails from a stable in form.. he is just preferred to Paperising
"1st * Choice" _Red Striker
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Satchmo

5:15 Finale Day Conditions Stakes Class C
"THE ROOK " _ Aldebaran, Zarin, Potemkin, York Cliff, Forest Leaf, and Cape Of Good Hope, all look like interesting middle distance prospects for the future. With the ground likely to be chewed up by the hurdlers never mind the likely rain, it is a race to treat with caution .... Aldebaran (USA) is a token offering
"1st * Choice" _Aldebaran (USA)
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Cape Of Good Hope

5:45 Esher Cup (Handicap) Class C
"THE ROOK " _Haasil who I saw win easily on video last time out at Ripon, did enough that day, to make me think he could go well here despite 9-5 in this handicap... hopefully he can punters home happy
"1st * Choice" _Haasil
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Matlock

SANDOWN PARK
Friday 27th April
1.35 Daily Telegraph Novices' Chase (Class B) 7runners 2m 4f 110yds Penalty £17225.00 5yo plus
"THE ROOK " _Crocadee, Biliverdin, Exit To Wave, Ikrenel Royal, and Cadougold are the likeliest winner of the opener. Biliverdin and Crocadee renew rivalry after their recent meeting at Kempton. Crocadee won a bit ion hand and should come on top again. The ex-French winner hurdler/chaser Ikrenel Royal looks the one to fear
"1st * Choice" _Crocadee
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Ikrenel Royal,

2.05 Bonusprint Distance Championship Hurdle (Class A) (Grade 1) 11runners 3m Penalty £37700.00 4yo plus
Runner[s] from our N.H. 'Horses to Follow' feature__ Rodock, & Carlovent,
"THE ROOK " _Baracouda, Bacchanal, Behrajan, Anzum, Sudden Shock, Celtic Native, Rodock, and Carlovent, are the ones I'd consider for the places here. With Springfield Scally almost certain to ensure a decent place, this should be set up for Baracouda who gave weight away and won with a bit in hand at Auteuil 33 days ago. Bacchanal, reverting back to hurdles may give him plenty to think about, but Baracouda should come out on top. Behrajan, Anzum, and Celtic Native are relatively exposed, but have decent place claims, however if you're looking for a shock result Sudden Shock; who has decent form in France and Italy, including finishing only 3 1/2lengths behind Baracouda at Auteuil in November; Rodock, who has conditions to suit and is capable of putting in a bold bid, and Carlovent, an impressive winner at Aintree make more appeal. Sudden Shock (GER) is a name to note for the future, so Rodock gets another chance to prove himself
"1st * Choice" _Baracouda
"(e/w) Alternative" _Rodock
"Long-shot!!"_ Carlovent,

2:40 Tote Gold Trophy Chase (Class A) (Grade 1) 7runners 3m 110yds Penalty £58000.00 5yo plus
Runner[s] from our N.H. 'Horses to Follow' feature__ Marlborough & First Gold
"THE ROOK " _First Gold so impressive when winning the King George at Kempton and at Aintree, will be very hard to beat. Part of me dearly wants to see him confirm his status as the best 3mile chaser, however he has had a long hard season, (remember he has been on the go since last February) and it is always possible that one more hard race at Aintree could have taken some of the edge off him. Marlborough has the advantage of being a fresh horse, and whilst he has yet to prove himself at this level, I've always believed that he could. I have split loyalties... so the coin went up ..... and came down on the side of the fresh horse
"1st * Choice" _ Marlborough
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Bellator,

3.10 Masai Mile (Class A) (Group 2) 7runners 1m 14yds Penalty £36000.00 4yo plus
"THE ROOK " _ Swallow Flight, who hopefully has got over his exertions at Nad El Sheba behind Jim and Tonic, is a hopeful choice to turn over Right Wing, Albarahin, and Island Sands
"1st * Choice" _ Swallow Flight
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Fanaar

3.45 Heathorns Bookmakers Gordon Richards Stakes (Class A) (Group 3) 6runners 1m 2f 7yds Penalty £24000.00 4yo plus
Runner[s] from our FLAT 'Horses to Follow' feature__ Adilabad (USA)
"THE ROOK " _ Border Arrow and Pawn Broker should repeat last week's Kempton duel between. The weight favour John Dunlop's 4yo (Pawn Broker), but both may be touched off by the progressive Adilabad (USA), who could be set fair for a decent season
"1st * Choice" _Adilabad (USA)
"(e/w) Alternative" _

4.15 Hargreave Hale Rated Stakes (Class C Handicap) 9runners 1m 14yds Penalty £12458.40 4yo plus
"THE ROOK " _Bonaguil who goes well fresh has strong claims at the sixth. although the trip is a minimum for him these days his stamina definitely brings him into it on this track, and he gets the call
"1st * Choice" _ Bonaguil
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Miss Dordogne,

4.45 Genie Rated Stakes (Class B Handicap) 14runners 5f 6yds Penalty £9500.40 3yo only
"THE ROOK " _
"1st * Choice" _ Kyllachy,
"(e/w) Alternative" _ Lilleman

5.15 Mousetrap Challenge Cup Maiden Fillies' Stakes (Class D) 6runners 1m 2f 7yds Penalty £4212.00 3yo only fillies
"THE ROOK " _
"1st * Choice" _ Conquestadora
"(e/w) Alternative" _
