Analysis & Selections by
.t.h.e. r.o.o.k.
Whether it be
"the
race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics
and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er CHOICE), as well as
the next best runners (in our view, this can include any horses who could run well at eachway
odds). Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Redouble, Bracey Run, Cambio, Sir Walter, Divorce Action, Isam Top, Kingsdown Trix, Ewar Bold, Pridewood Fuggle and Oversman, all have chances (of sorts) in an interesting novice handicap
hurdle which opens day two of the meeting. Redouble, [a good third on his reappearance behind Three Eagles at Warwick at the end of May] and Cambio [who
didn't run too badly behind German raider Foreman at Folkestone] make plenty of appeal from the foot of the handicap. However Bracey Run, who won on his last start at Southwell is preferred. He had that Southwell race in safe keeping from a long way out and, despite carrying top weight of 12st 1lbsw, he is
still the best part of two stone lower than when his best handicap rating. In what looks to be an
ordinary race Sir Walter, who hasn't disapointed over fences of late may bounce back here over hurdles and could be
the best eachway "alternative".
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Bracey Run,
¦ e/w alternative² ¦:¬>Sir Walter
2e WORCESTER ¬ 2:50 Sunday Is Family Fun Day Novices' Hurdle £3500 added, 4yo plus, 2m, penalty £2765, 18 runners.

¦ are there any horses that WERE in "ONE TO JUMP 2002" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>Hoh No
¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Per Amore, [a winner twice at the end of last season at Ludlow], Tactful Remark, [fairly useful over 1m-1m2f at his best when trained by John Gosden, though
didn't replicate that level of form last term when with Jamie Osborne], Gemi Bed, [a
winner in the provinces when trained in France, who ran creditably behind Indium at Huntingdon on his debut over
British obstacles], Hoh No, [who is interesting, if he ever replicated his best flat form over hurdles] and Prime Minister [third twice on both starts this term, though one was in selling company], look the
horses to concentrate on in the second. In receipt of 12lbs from multi-winner Per
Amore, Tactical Remark is worth chancing.

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Flahive's First, Happicat, Broke Road, Air Attaché, Henrianjames and Maousse Honor, make most appeal in
the third. Broke Road was impressive when winning at Fakenham last time out, however his 7lbs-penalty is
off-putting and Happicat [who ran well in the Swinton Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) last time out], and Air
Attaché [not seen out since winning at Uttoxeter in august 2000] make far more appeal.
Happicat' s recent match fitness may prove ultimately decisive. The surprise packet
could be Maousse Honor, who was so disappointing last term after having look so
promising when winning as a novice over hurdles. This seven-year-old mare could
well bounce back, and appeals as the "eachway alternative".
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Happicat,
¦ e/w alternative² ¦:¬>Maousse Honor (FR)
4e WORCESTER ¬ 3:55 Tote betXpress Hurdle {H' cap}. £20000 added, 4yo plus, 2m, penalty £13897, 14 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Cupboard Lover, Saragann, Dick The Taxi, Barren Lands, Boater, Bernardon, Inn Antique, Barren Lands, and Knight's Emperor make most appeal in a decent
handicap hurdle for this time of year. There is bound to be market support for Cupboard Lover, especially after his smooth win at Newbury on the flat
earlier this week, however in Bernardon, and Inn Antique, he meets two potentially well treated "improvers". I have a high
regard for Bernardon, who I literally haven't stopped raving about. This former Group winner in Germany is much better than the form he showed when trailing home at
Chepstow last time out, and off of this handicap mark, he is worth chancing. Failed chaser Inn Antique, who won impressively at
Wincanton over hurdles last time out is the eachway alternative
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>Bernardon (GER)

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>In contrast to the previous race, this handicap
chase is quite poor. You can make a case for Torn Silk, Prancing Blade, Joint Account, Harfdecent, and Khatani. Joint Account, who won last time out at
Wetherby. That was a decent prize and Fiona Needham's ability to claim 5l;bs makes him more attractive than Khatani [who
finished third to Chevalier Errant at Stratford last time out] or Torn Silk - who
hasn't raced since beating Gaysun at Taunton last October
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬> Joint Account,

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Neltina, Golden Coin, Lady Terimond, Miss Janica, and Ma's Confusion, make most appeal in the first division. Golden Coin bidding for a hat trick is just preferred to Lady Terimond, who ran well in defeat behind Barry Hills' Baccarat at Hereford in March.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>Golden Coin,
¦ e/w alternative² ¦:¬> Ma's Confusion,

evaluate, and I'd take a chance with Le Grand Rocher from the newly-formed
Caro/Scudamore combo.

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Very open race this however poor in terms of quality. Madam's Man is a slow maturity six year old who ran really two runs ago at Bangor over this trip. Decent jumping ground suits him best and he should therefore be forgiven his rather poor showing last time out at Southwell. You can make a strong case for Jolly John, but in my view, he is a horse to put into your notebooks until he gets better assistance in the saddle. I don't believe in crabbing female jockeys, however Mrs Mann really sets this horse far too much to do in his races... then again he is probably being given a chance by the handicapper and could pop up one day. I like offering eachway alternatives. In this race two caught the eye. Abbeyknock Boy (will be better in 18months time, probably over fences) and Inis Eile, who has a real chaser's pedigree. You wont see the best of him until he finally goes chasing, but he hasn't run too badly of late and may improve of this slightly better surface ... The last named is preferred, but both horses are just the sort that could end up in our Horses to follow lists this season.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>Madam's Man
¦ e/w alternative² ¦:¬>Inis Eile,

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>It's only really possible to support three in the second with any confidence; Supreme Storm, who won at Huntingdon on his debut, Tuxedo Junction - making his chasing debut, and Free To Run who won earlier in the week at Carmel. I've always liked Tuxedo Junction and he is capable of improving over the larger obstacles... The 10lbs he receives from Supreme Storm could prove decisive.
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>Tuxedo Junction (NZ) .

¦ are there any horses that WERE in "ONE TO JUMP 2002" - our feature that each season provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬> Jaybejay (NZ)
¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Christopher, Jaybejay, Rainbow Dance, Wild Spice, Heracles, and Loop The Loup, all could be entertained here in a very open handicap hurdle. Christopher to be honest hasn't done anything wrong and probably deserves to be favourite based on efforts thus this season, however I never really thought we saw the best of Jaybejay, who was in our "One To Jump" feature last year. a multiple winner on the Flat in New Zealand, Jaybejay made an auspicious start in this country when being well beaten at Leicester, however he improved significantly on that when winning at Wincanton next time out coming away nicely on the run-in, having been in front after three out. He was allows to take his chance in the Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle (Grade 1) at the Cheltenham festival, however he could only finished midfield 26lengths behind the winner Like-A-Butterfly. The form of his Wincanton win is working out really well at Lunar Crystal, Samsaam and Dream With Me have all come out and won subsequently - if the 2m4f trip doesn't overly tax him, he would appear to have a good chance off of a handicap mark of 118.

¦ are there any horses that WERE in "ONE TO JUMP 2002" - our feature that each season provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>Oliver Cromwell
¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Hachty Boy, Oliver Cromwell, Highcroft Boy, and Gottabe looked best in the fourth.... There probably isn't much to choose between these at these weights. I have to honest ... I was quite impressed with Hachty Boy when he won with a bit in had at Wetherby last time out, however Tathmin didn't exactly frank the form last time out at Uttoxeter in a very poor novice chase. He is vulnerable and the big grey Highcroft Boy who impressed when winning over hurdles at Wincanton last month makes plenty of appeal here, despite this being his chasing debut. Mollycarrsbrekfast, who has been running well enough recently between the flags could plug on into a place
¦ 1er CHOICE¹ ¦:¬>Highcroft Boy,

¦ .t.h.e. r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>Probably the most difficult race to call was the fifth, you can make cases for Rosencrantz, Contes, Billy Nomaite, and Justin Mac. Rosencrantz, (at Uttoxeter) and Contes (at Fontwell) have both posted easy wins this week and should go close, however I was particularly impressed with the enthusiasm shown by Justin Mac when winning the One And Only Handicap Hunters' Chase at Newton Abbot at the end of last month. He jumped for fun that day and this "asset" will stand him in good stead here ... He is certain to go close.
