Analysis & Selections by
l'ippica italiana
Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.
SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;
(1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds;
(E/W

¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- Monblond, Thunderfront, Go Go La Vita, Finalmente and Over Ponz look best of the seven lining up for the opening hurdle race on the card. They have met several times over obstacles this year, however Monblond appears to have always come out on top. This three-year-old son of Dernier Empereur has not been out since Italian finishing third to Italian Legend, over course and distance at the beginning of August. I prefer him to Thunderfront, and Go Go La Vita,

¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- Although thirteen are due to line up in the second, very few of these have the level of form possessed by Hammerklavier. This seven-year-old grey son of Soviet Star has been a consistent hurdler in Italy over the last couple of seasons. He has won two of his last four races, most recently when beating Londrina (who reopposes) and Undercover here over 3000m a couple of weeks ago... I'd be surprised if he was turned over

¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- An international field, representing Italy, German, France and Poland line up for third race on the card. Del Mar Dancer, Ice Crystal, Windlight, Sunpower and Mansfield are the best of these. Del Mar Dancer has a major chance, having finished second to Plinsky in the Premio Corsa Siepi Dei 4 Anni [Gruppo II] at Milano in May. He had Windlight behind him that day and I expect him to confirm placings. Wirtenberg is interesting as he beat Del Mar dancer when winning two conditions events at the end of 2001. He had Monolith behind him when finishing second to Fratello Sole here two week ago, and is a serious threat if back to his best. Ice Crystal is a model of consistency, having finished second on his last three starts... He should be too far way. The challenge from Germany is strong; Mansfield comes here on the back of a win at Bad Harzburg in July, and a good second to Altafini in a steeplechase at Baden-Baden... he should go well, as should Sunpower, who has shown fair form on the level in Germany, before winning here on his last start. He makes his hurdling debut here. Del Mar Dancer's recent form just gets him the nod of Wirtenberg, however I wouldn't be surprised if Sunpower made a big impression.

¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- Nine runners have been declared for the fourth race on the card. Mit Club, Jamais Sans Moi, Nebelsturm, Amaca, and Bel Roi make most appeal. Mit Club has landed two of his last three starts, and most significantly finished in front of Bel Roi and Amaca here seven days ago. He is penalised for that win and having only finished a length and 4lenhgths in front of them (respectively) is vulnerable this time around. I wouldn't be surprised if Amaca did him this time around.

¦ (ONE TO JUMP 2003) - are there any horses from "one to jump 2003" our feature which; each season, provides a list of horses to follow during the national hunt season? ¦:¬>-Ner [POL], Negro [POL] and Königsohn [GER]
¦ l'ippica italiana ¦:¬>- A truely international field will contest one of the premier hurdles races held in Italy.... it is odd that there isn't any challenge for the United Kingdom, however there are representatives from Italy, France, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Here's a summary of their chances
 |
Almanzor [POL], trained by R. Holcak in the Czech Republic - Probably the best chaser in the Czech Republic at the moment, Almanzor landed Paramo Gold Cup (Steeplechase) in June, with Paddy's return a distance away in third. He supplemented that success over course and distance five weeks ago and comes her in good heart. He likes to go off at a brisk pace and should make his presence felt early on. Difficult to weight up in the context of this race, but is nonetheless an interesting entrant. |
 |
Coogan [ITY], trained by Paolo Favero in Italy
- Formerly trained on the flat in Britain by Paul Cole, Coogan has become an accomplished hurdler in Italy. He comes here on the back of a good win here two weeks ago, however he was last behind Bagni Di Petriolo in the Gran Corsa di Siepi di Roma (Hurdle) in February, and is definitely vulnerable. |
 |
Dom Lyphard [FR], trained by Y. Fertillet in France
- Dom Lyphard has become a bit of a cosmopolitan, and hardly ever seems to race in France. However when you can win good prize money on your travels why not. He landed three of Italy's premier jump races over the last two season, before Bagni Di Petriolo put an end to his run in the Gran Corsa di Siepi di Roma (Hurdle) in February. He has since run well when coming eighth in the Nakayama Grand Jump (Grade 1). His record here is reason enough to respect his claims. |
 |
Jazzix
[FR], trained by A Bassegio in Italy - Jazzix; a five-year-old son of Linamix, comes into the race on the back of two wins from his last three starts, most recently when winning here over 3300m... He just doesn't look good enough |
 |
Königsohn [GER], trained by W. Glanz in
Germany. - I'm a bit mob-handed in this race and I must admit that I didn't imagine any of our "ONE TO JUMP 2003" runners running in a race of this calibre (at this time in their careers). Königsohn won three of his thirteen starts in Germany on the level before trying his hand over hurdles. He's two from three so far; his only defeat was at the hands of Valgano, (who he reopposes) here over 3500m. That was a conditions event, and arguably his best effort thus far... It's a big ask, however I wouldnt be surprise if he ran creditably. |
 |
Musardo [FR], trained by J. Bertran De Balanda in France
- Much travelled chaser. Formerly trained in France, before failing to make an impact in the UK with Venetia Williams. Bought very cheaply to race again in France, but seems to regain his enthusiasm and has landed his last two starts at Clairefontaine, most recently the Prix Jacques Peillon (Hurdle) at the beginning of August.... he has to go on the shortlist. |
 |
Negro [POL], trained by Stefan Bigus in
Italy. One of my favourite horses of the moment, and the second horse from our "ONE TO JUMP 2003" feature to make this line up - Negro is the only four year old in the line-up, and deserves to take his chance. This black son of Don Corleone was probably the best four year old during the early part of this year, however he has always been a bit headstrong and that became more prevalent by the time the championship races came around at the beginning of May. I expected him to go close in the Premio Corsa Siepi Dei 4 Anni [Gruppo II] over 3600 m (especially as he'd beaten several of his rivals), however he pulled far to hard behind extravagant front runner Plinksy (who eventually won the race) and had nothing left for the business end of the race. He attempted to make all in a conditions event in May over 3300m however again did too much early on and was pipped on the line by Gold Generator (another horse he'd beaten earlier in the season). He was given a break and came here three weeks ago fro a conditions event over 3500m. He showed a bit more of that old fizz and gave weight and a thrashing to Ice Dancer (btn 6 lengths) and Windlight (another 10lengths behind in third), who compete in other races on the card. I've always believed that he was good enough to compete at this level, and he has place pretensions if he gives himself a chance early on. |
 |
Ner [POL], trained by Josef Vana in the Czech Republic - One of the most difficult horses to weight up, Ner is the third horse from our "ONE TO JUMP 2003". He's failed to win on the flat, but has been a revelation over obstacles, and is four from six races this season. He has won a conditions hurdle over the course in August, before landing two prizes in Germany, the most recent of these was the Preis des Murgtals / Hürdenrennen - Listenrennen at Baden-Baden, where he beat Onaldo, (who'd finished midfield behind Simoun in the 31. Grosser Mercedes - Benz - Preis [Gruppe.II] at Baden-Baden, before winning his only start over hurdles) by 2lengths. He literally could be anything and has to be respected here. |
 |
Présent Bleu [FR], trained by E Bec De La Motte in
France - Présent Bleu is another horse, which seems to have prospered by returning to his native France, having been trained for a season and a half by Martin Pipe. He won five races in this country, [and did run some good races in defeat], however he appeared to always struggle when tried out of claiming company. He has been in far better form this year and has been placed in his last six starts, winning three of them, the most recent win being in the Grand Steeple-Chase De Deauville - Prix De La Ville De Deauville at Clairefontaine four weeks ago. He comes here in great heart and should go well. |
 |
Salvator [SLO], trained by Frau Dr. Cestmir Olehla in Germany - very difficult horse to evaluate. He has won six races over obstacles including when beating Coogan here in a conditions event at the beginning of August. Quite what that means in the context of this race is unclear but he deserves to be paid some respect. |
 |
San Suru [GER], trained by Mario Hofer in Germany - A consistent performer over the years in Italy and Germany over obstacles. He hasn't been out since finishing fourth to Bagno Di Petriolo in the Gran Corsa di Siepi di Roma (Hurdle) in February, and his fitness has to be taken on trust. |
 |
Stodoun [FR], trained by Y. Fertillet in France - Yannick Fertillet has a strong hand in this race, as not only does he have Dom Lyphard contesting this prize, he also has this progressive hurdler/chaser. He steadily improved throughout the second half of last season, winning four hurdles on the bounce, culminating in wins in the Grande Course de Haies de Cagnes, and the Grand Prix De La Ville De Nice (steeplechase) [Group III] at Cagnes-Sur-Mer in mid January. He has been a couple of pip openers on the flat, winning at Saint Malo four weeks ago, and comes here with a major claim. The booking of French Champion Jockey Christophe Pieux seems particularly significant. |
 |
Valgano [GER], trained by Astrid Giambertone in Italy
- Valgano is a fairly useful hurdler in Italy, however this son of Acatenango was eleventh in the Premio Gran Corsa Di Siepi Mi [Gruppo I] behind Bagno Di Petriolo in May, and despite beating Koenigsohn on his last start, still in my view has a bit to find. |
¦. S.U.M.M.A.R.Y. ¦:>- This is fiercely competitive and the only certainty is the early pace, which either Almanzor or Negro may try to set. It would be nice to see a home winner, however this may be too hard an ask for Negro at this stage in his career.... The percentage call has to be Stodoun, who comes here in the form of his life and sets a very high standard. I think Negro, Presnet Bleu, and Dom Lyphard will battle out the places.

They are all recent multi winners, however Histoire D'estruval has beaten Igor Du Sentier on his last two meetings, so the fact the Igor Du Sentier has finished in front of Gran Risa tends to suggest that Histoire D'estruval is the one to be on, if he puts in a clear round.
