Cheltenham ´04
(day two - part two)

Analysis & Selections by

ðE` RØøK

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this ´second opinion´ provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent each-way claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at each-way odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race 's analysis.

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨ONE¨Tº¨JUMP´º4¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦ ¬ are there any horses from ONE Tº JUMP ´º4 - our feature which at the beginning of each season, sets out to provide a list of horses to follow during the current national hunt season? ¦ --: Galileo (POL), Kórelo (FR), Le Duç (FR), Tucacãs (FR), Grey Report, Kadount (FR).
¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨"ðE´RØøK"¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦--: The Coral Cup is one of the best innovations of recent festivals as this 2½ mile handicap hurdle annually tend to throw up a fine mix of exciting finishes, controversy as well as top-class performances. |¯¯¯¯¯¯¯SUMMARY¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| --: This is a particularly messy race at the moment, mainly because of the presence at the head of the weights of Rhinestone Cowboy who is of course entered in the Champion Hurdle. His presence at the head of the handicap ensures that only 16 horses are in the long handicap proper and there is the added bonus of the weights rising potentially overnight, were he not to lineup on the day. If he were to bypass the Champion Hurdle, and instead run here, you would fancy his chances of success though you could argue more strongly that his presence gives those horses just below him numerically far better racing weights than they would have otherwise. This would give them an edge and it would be no surprise if the likes of Hardy Eustace, Starzaan, Rosaker, Monkerhostin, Mughas, Brave Inca, Redemption and Hand Inn Hand were to attract significant support on the morning of the race.

We aren't as confident going into this as we were last year with Xenophon however I would be very keen on Brave Inca (for reason suggested above with only 10st. on his back), Lilium De Cotte (very useful juvenile last term who is a lot better than he showed over fences at Ascot last time out), Inca Trail (who was very impressive at Wincanton last time and seems to be a much better horse on this faster surface), Monkerhostin (very impressive at Kempton last  time and shouldn't be inconvenienced by dropping back in trip) and from well out of the weights, Martin Pipe's pair Lotus Des Pictons and Ilabòn (still relatively unexposed novices at Nicholashayne who are both going the right way).

Don't get involved in the betting on this race yet. Allow it to take more shape and the should Rhinestone Cowboy be declared, then don't drift too far away from the head of the handicap. Assuming the weights were headed by Rhinestone Cowboy then:

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨"ðE´RØøK"¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦--:  The National Hunt Chase has been run more often than any other race at the Festival meeting and until the 1930s, only the Grand National was more important in the jump calendar. This year there are seventy-one entries, twelve of whom come from Ireland, plus one from France. Unfortunately for us, the weight declarations may not come out before we leave for Gloucester, however that doesn´t stop us from highlighting who we believe the main principals are:

Alphazar - trained by Tony Mullins

Ballyamber - trained by Willie Mullins

Billywill - trained by Seamus Mullins

Bižet - trained by Tony Martin

Boneyarrow - Willie Mullins

Celestial Gold - trained by Martin Pipe

Comanche War Paint - trained by Paul Nicholls

Drombeag - trained by Jonjo O’Neill

Go White Lightening - trained by Mark Bradstock

Hawk´s Landing - trained by Jonjo O’Neill

High Cotton - trained by Mary Reveley

Historic - trained by Tom George

Jivaty (FR) - trained by Martin Pipe

Joueur d´Estruval (FR) - trained by Willie Mullins

Kouros Des Obeaux (FR) - trained by Martin Pipe

Look Collonges (FR) - trained by Guillaume Macaire

Madam´s Man - trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies

Magical Bailiwick - trained by Martin Pipe

Majed (FR) - trained by Paul Nicholls

Primaticcio - trained by Ian Williams

Rosslea - trained by Henrietta Knight

Satco Express - trained by George Yardley

Silver Birch - trained by Paul Nicholls

Tierkely - trained by John Lambe

Tipsy Mouse - trained by Sue Smith

Tyneandthyneagain - trained by Richard Guest

Winding River - trained by Charles Egerton

World Wide Web - trained by Jonjo O’Neill

Yeoman´s Point - trained by Christy Roche

|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯SUMMARY¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| --: The weights have not yet been published for this long-distance chase so with that problem plus the potential for these amateur riders to claim allowances, it is making this race particularly hard to call. In many people's eyes though, the Henrietta Knight trained Rosslea is a potential banker especially if he is able to translate his form against some of the best novices of this season, (most recently Our Vic in the Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot) over this extreme distance. He is going to take a lot of beating and although the likes Magical Bailiwick and Native Emperor would have the ability to challenge him over shorter distances there is no guarantee that this extra mile is likely to suit. Tyneandthyneagain would be interesting if the heavens opened however that's a big 'if' and it really doesn't look as though it's worth opposing the 'jolly'...that isn't however my style so lets see if we can find something at a nice price to give us a run for our money and hopefully a win. Double Honour looks as though this trip would be ideal however this is a very big test of his jumping technique and if I'm honest, I've never really taken to him over obstacles. We were keen on Satco Express for the Kim Muir and it's possible that he will start at a decent price...possible. Look Collonges looked for all the world as though he was going to beat Rosslea at Kempton last time out, however he was out-battled close home...Guillaume Macaire says that he's crying out for this sort of trip. Not bad. I wonder if Jivaty is the one? This five-times point-to-point winner in Ireland is one of five entries for Nicholashayne, however on paper alone looks to be better potentially than Guard Duty, Kouros Des Obeaux and Celestial Gold. He ran a perfectly satisfactory race in his British debut over hurdles three weeks ago and will definitely come on for that run. Rosslea may well win this, however if you wanted to look for a sporting bet in this race, keep an eye on this one especially if a jockey of note is 'jocked up'.

|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯SUMMARY¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| --: It'll be fascinating if the top weights stood their ground which would put a totally different complexion on this race. There are definitely a few of these (Jasmin Guichois, Tucacãs and Simply Gifted to name but three) who would benefit if the weights were to rise here. Two we do like that are in the weights proper are our horses to follow Jakari and Patricksnineteenth. Both of these have been improving steadily throughout this season and would be ideally suited by this trip. Jakari does have an advantage in that he has proven his ability to act over course and distance. There was plenty to like about the resolution shown when beating Joe Blake last time out at Ayr and if the top-weights were to stand their ground, he would have a great chance off of only 10st. 12lbs. Pundits are talking up the chances of Iznogoud here, understandably because he is still well-treated however we do note that stablemate Tucacãs lurks just outside of the weights on 9st. 12lbs. She is best fresh so we consider it significant that she hasn't run since disappointing behind Ballyconnell here in January. She is always worth noting when she is due to be ridden by the likes of 'A.P.' and Jamie Moore and she might prove to be the best each-way option.

¦¨¨¨¨¨¨Thirteenth¨Race¨¨¨¨¨¨¦--: Weatherbys Champion Bumper - [A National Hunt Flat Race] [gr. I] 2Miles~110yds £40,000 - for four, five and six-year-olds only which have not run under any recognised Rules of Racing, except National Hunt Flat races or Irish National Hunt Flat races. Horses are not to have run in more than four National Hunt Flat races and, before March 1, 2004, must have been placed first, second, third or fourth in such a race. Weights: 4-y-o: 10st. 12lb, 5-y-o and 6-y-o: 11st 5lb, fillies and mares allowance 7lb. Entries closed March 3 (58 entries), entries released Monday, March 8, five-day confirmation stage Friday, March 12, final declaration stage 10.15am Tuesday, March 16.

¦ --: Granny Kelly's Tart, Mrs. Wallensky and Sidalcea
¦¨¨¨¨¨¨¨"ðE´RØøK"¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¦--:   The Weatherbys Champion Bumper was inaugurated in 1992. It is the second newest race at the Festival and anybody who doubts the value of such races being on a card probably only needs to look at the list of previous winners, which includes Montelado (1992), Mucklemeg (1994), Wither Or Which (1996), Florida Pearl (1997), Alexander Banquet (1998), Monsignor (1999), Pizarro (2002) and of course last year Liberman. Connections of the fifty-eight entries will no doubt be hoping that the winner proves to be as good as those winners. I´ve narrowed down the field to the following list of candidates:

Augherskea - trained by John Noel Meade

Blazing Liss - trained by John Kiely

Detonante - trained by Willie Mullins

Gayle Abated - trained by Willie Mullins

Granny Kelly´s Tart - trained by Willie Mullins

Homer Wells - trained by Willie Mullins

Itsa Legend - trained by Alan King

Knocknabooly - trained by Willie Mullins

Major Vernon - trained by Willie Mullins

Malahide Marina - trained by Willie Mullins

Manners - trained by Jonjo O’Neill

Masriyna´s Article - trained by Willie Mullins

Millenaire (FR) - trained by Jonjo O’Neill

Monteforte - trained by Jim Old

Mr. McAuley - trained by Michael Halford

Mrs. Wallensky - trained by Willie Mullins

New Field - trained by Paddy Mullins

Our Ben - trained by Willie Mullins

Overbury Affair - trained by Edward O’Grady

Refinement - trained by Jonjo O’Neill

Royal Paradise (FR) - trained by Francois Doumen

Sidalcea - trained by Edward O’Grady

Stagecoachsapphire - trained by Sue Smith

Templelusk - trained by Willie Mullins

The Thunderer - trained by Nicky Henderson

Tigerlion - trained by John Bleahen

Total Enjoyment - trained by Thomas Cooper

Woodlands Genpower - trained by Philip Pritchard

|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯SUMMARY¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| --: The Irish (who have dominated this race since it's inception in 1992) would appear to have a tight grip on this year's renewal with more that fifty per cent of the entries. Willie Mullins (the main benefactor) has eleven of them and it last season is an indicator, punters can be fairly certain that several of these will line up on the day. It was interesting to here the favourable comments about Granny Kelly's Tarts and Mrs. Wallensky, so clearly a decent run is expected from these. Major Vernon (who stormed home by 11 lengths at Thurles at the beginning of February), Templelusk (who won a similar event at Punchestown in December) and Knocknabooly (a winner at Gowran Park a month ago) would appear to be his strongest five candidates. If you add Blazing Liz (unbeaten in three starts), Total Enjoyment (the winner of his last two efforts) and Martinstown (unbeaten in two bumpers this season) you wouldn't be surprised if Ireland weren't a shade odds-on to win this. That isn't to say that the home challenge doesn't possess potential - far from it. I imagine that Manners, Millenaire and Refinement (probably the three strongest candidates) will be winning decent races over obstacles next season.

My problem with them (and frankly the structure of our races) is that we have adopted the culture of running these slowly from flagfall and then sprinting over the last mile, whereas here (and in a larger percentage of races in Ireland) you are going to get a more even pace throughout which invariably (when horses quicken at the end of the race) gives punters a good indication of a horse's long-term potential. Whilst I don't think it will be a clean sweep of places, the horse that goes into this with the strongest credentials is Martinstown who has most demonstrated the qualities I have just highlighted. There have been rumours about this horse's well-being, however were he to turn up on the day, I think he would be very hard to beat if he is on song. Four year olds have a lousy record in this race however I do believe that he French challenger Royal Paradise may be above average. We know he can quicken off of a fast pace as he had to, to win on his debut at Sandown and I would not be at all surprise if he made it into the frame.
|¯¯1ST¯PLACED?¯¯| ¬: Martinstown
|¯2ª¯place?¯| ¬: Granny Kelly's Tarts

DEDICATION

GEORGE E. ROBERTSON
1936 - 2003

FURLONG TO GO would like to convey our condolences to the rØøk, whose father; George Edward Robertson passed away on  16th April 2003.

Mr. Robertson nurtured the rØøk´s enthusiasm for this sport, and it was this inspiration, which is probably behind the creation of this website. As a permanent tribute to his memory, all the meetings covered under the "feature Meeting" banner will be dedicated to him...

Success Stories

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices´ Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.
Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with "A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27 days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he´d have been an excellent each-way wager}.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Mount Gay,

"As much as I like Demasta, there is so much pace here, that I cant help but think that the front runners may go too fast for their own good here. It makes sense [in my view], to be looking for something likely to be able to travel well... and despite my very negative comments above... I have (since the runners were declared), had a lot of time for the chance of Chicúelo (at each-way odds). I think some horses suit certain trainers, and I think this horse has a better chance of winning a race like this with Martin Pipe than Ian Williams - not because I necessarily think Pipe is a far better trainer than Williams is... its more to do with understanding this type of horse. Nicholashayne - more than most training establishments - does particularly with their foreign purchases. I think this is in part because due to the amount of time/effort they have invested into studying not only French form, but also how certain trainers educate their young horses - adopting if/when necessary previous regime/style of training. Secondly, (more importantly), some French breds improve after a season´s acclimatization. A look at this horse´s form in France and you´ll find, for example, his good third to Sleeping Night and Ilnamar (beaten 8½lengths) in the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Grade 3) , or his third to Sleeping Night and Douze Douze in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase Des 4 Ans (Chase) (Grade 1) in November 2000. He has certainly been given a chance here off of only a handicap rating of 116, and I can´t see him not finishing in the first four.... He´ll do for me".

"ANOTHER WINNER FOR "ONE TO JUMP 2003"

Tote betXpress Hurdle {H
´ cap}. £20000 added, 4yo plus, 2m, penalty £13897, 14 runners.
Cupboard Lover, Saragann, Dick The Taxi, Barren Lands, Boater,
Bërnardon, Inn Antique, Barren Lands, and Knight´s Emperor make most appeal in a decent handicap hurdle for this time of year. There is bound to be market support for Cupboard Lover, especially after his smooth win at Newbury on the flat earlier this week, however in Bërnardon, and Inn Antique, he meets two potentially well treated "improvers". I have a high regard for Bërnardon, who I literally haven´t stopped raving about. This former Group winner in Germany is much better than the form he showed when trailing home at Chepstow last time out, and off of this handicap mark, he is worth chancing.
Bërnardon
held on to score at odds of 13/2

ASCOT
Saturday 16th February, 2002
1:30 Amlin Reynoldstown Novices´ Steeple Ch. {Gr.2}
Realistically, course and distance winner Arctic Jack, Father McCarten, High Cotton and Ex-French recruit Jimmy Tennis are the likeliest winners of this Grade 2 event. I have a healthy regard for Arctic Jack, and I´m certain he´ll run creditably here, however, I´ve been monitoring Jimmy Tennis' career and always thought that he could make the grade over here. He was one of the better four-year-old chasers in France in 2001 and despite an absence of 140 days hopefully can make best use of the weight for age allowances he receives here

JIMMY TENNIS won - 3/1

2:00 William Hill H´cap. Hurdle
A very competitive handicap hurdle with several of these having strong claims. Farmer Jack, Teaatral, Lord Brex, Aspirant Dancer, Creon, Mr. Markham, and Ideal du Bois Beury all have serious claims. Father Jack (who was probably ridden too positively last time out) is sure to go well and probably would have been my selection if Ideal du Bois Beury hadn´t been in opposition. I thought he won with a bit in hand under top weight at Leicester last time out and looks very appealing off of the minimum weight.
IDEAL DU BOIS BEURY won - 10/1
