"Cheltenham Festival '07"
 by ₫ә ЯOOҚ

 Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent each-way claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at each-way odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

Up to the minute racing news....

THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL BY THE ROOK & THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE.

As regular readers will be aware, the commencement of the Cheltenham Festival coincides with the temporary suspension of the website, whilst we all recharge our batteries... and the Rook gets some well-needed recuperation time.

We have been contacted by some of you, whom whilst appreciating our predicament, do miss our thoughts on the meeting, and would at the very least like to know what are thoughts are on the main races.

With this in mind, the rook and the four horsemen have put their respective heads together, and have come up with this list of possible for you to ponder over.

FINDING WINNERS - BY THE ROOK
I don't think it is healthy to go into this meeting with a polarised opinion of any of the races.

The current trend of 'glorifying' our champions, is potentially setting up the less well-informed punter for a major fall. There is nothing wrong with giving credit where its due, however when it is taken further than this, in my opinion, some pundits are making a fatal error in not seeing the potential fatal flaw[s], which all great horses possess. I think that there are a few 'strongly-fancied' horses, who may well oblige next week, but have demonstrated traits, or have sound reason for opposing them, who could well get turned over next week... beware!!

FINDING LOSERS - BY THE FOUR HORSEMEN
For the Reasons stated by the boss above, this meeting is usually a good meeting for those punters who like to lay horses. If you study form, or horses running styles, this meeting is probably very good for betting in running, as your knowledge of a horse's traits can used to your maximum advantage.

Here are our thoughts on the major races;

THE GOLD CUP
So much has been written this season about Kauto Star, that there isn't really any need on us to eulogise about him here. .. We know that he is an outstanding animal, and has plenty going for him going into the race. That said, we agree with the rook, that the positives about this horse are probably being overly stayed, to the extent that he isn't convinced for sake of example, that Kauto Star would beat Well Chief, if he ran in the Queen Mother, or Exotic Dancer and Our Vic would give him plenty to think about in the Ryanair, especially around Cheltenham's undulations.

It is difficult to overlook the errors made in each of his last three races especially as they were made on flat tracks which should have suited him more. His tendency to hang under pressure, will be tested to the limit, particularly over these undulations of Cheltenham and these factors/concerns, plus doubts about him staying the trip, are reasons enough for punters to be wary.

THE CHAMPION HURDLE
This race is incredibly open, and we know that the Rook is still unclear as to who he will be siding with. That said as nothing stands our, we are puzzled why Detroit City heads the market for this race, seemingly on the basis of a victory of Hardy Eustace in a falsely run 'Bula Hurdle'. As admiral a horse as Detroit City, official ratings suggest that he needs to improve on what he has done to make the frame, never mind winning this race, and these concerns, plus the possibility that he may be at a disadvantage in a fiercely run race; [he hit a flat spot, before winning the Cesarewitch and Agfa hurdle], are reasons for us to oppose him here.

WORLD HURDLE
We wouldn't want to state our view on this race at present because the ground is having a major effect on the market, and may well hold the key to the race. The Rook believes that Black Jack Ketchum is the best horse going into the race, however his very poor run last time out over course and distance raises doubts about his ability to [a] stay the trip, and [b] handle the prevailing conditions. On puddingy ground, he is vulnerable and therefore we can see why some of you would be keen to take him on, if he were to line up on the day.

QUEEN MOTHER CHASE
We can't see past Well Chief at present, who deserves to win this prize, and if he is anywhere near his best... and jumps round, will be extremely hard to beat. If there is a horse to take on here , it is probably Voy Pour Ustedes, who doesn't appear to have improved as much as you may have initially thought, when he outbattled Monet's Castle to land the Arkle twelve months ago. The form shown this season isn't good enough to beat the Newmill, that ran away with this race last season, or Nickname, who is starting to show the power he displayed when winning Grade One Races in France, let alone an on-song Well Chief and for those reasons alone we would considering opposing him here.

CHELTENHAM SELECTIONS
It is impossible at this stage to give definitive selections at this stage, especially as we stated at the beginning, that we are trying to give an open mind. We are therefore going to adopt the process we regularly use in our point-to-point feature; i.e. for each race, we will give you four 'possibles' as well as, where appropriate, a horse to lay, courtesy of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Success Stories

AINTREE
Friday, April 4 2003
2:35 Laurel Pub Company Top Novices' Hurdle (A) (Grade 2) 12runners 2miles~110yds Penalty £29000 4-Year-Olds plus
"Limerick Boy, Jaboune, Don Fernando, Glenhaven Nugget, Lirfox, Man O´Mystery and Thesis all appear to have chances in an open-looking Grade 2 Novice Hurdle. I'm surprised that "A.P." has got off of Lirfox who considering she was having her first race in this country, ran well behind Back In Front in the Supreme Novices Hurdle, especially as it seemed that plenty of use was made of her (almost certainly too much). I won't be surprised if she finishes much closer to Limerick Boy who finished 6 lengths in front of her that day. However, I'm not convinced she's good enough to beat him. Considering he'd has a rushed preparation, there was plenty to like about the way Limerick Boy travelled that day and as long as that race hasn't left it's mark, I believe he will take a lot of beating here. He is the selection. I've always thought that Man O´Mystery could do well over obstacles and if he was able to translate some of his flat ability I would fully expect him to improve on his most recent cheeky win in a minor Market Rasen event. He looks to be the best each-way alternative".
¦ 1^ ~ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬»- Limerick Boy (GER)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬»- Man O´Mystery (USA), [e/w]
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬»- Lirfox (FR)
the rØøk calls the first three home...

3:45 Martell Cognac Sainsbury´s Topham Steeple¨CH´. (Showcase H 'cap) (B) 30runners 2miles~5f 110yds Penalty £40600 5-Year-Olds plus
" Good luck to you if you're brave enough to have a bet in the Topham as this does appear to be one of the most open renewals that I can remember in recent years. You can make cases for frankly too many to mention - it's literally that open, however I've come up with this shortlist:

Clan Royal - Still relatively unexposed in this country and has been given a light campaign by Jonjo O'Neill. Should go well if he jumps round;

Ceànannas Mor - The stable have a bad record at this meeting however he jumped around Cheltenham's cross country course impeccably and could go well if he's in the lead;

Canadiane - Has been kept on the go by connections however she's in good heart at present and there was plenty to like about the way she stayed on at Haydock last weekend;

Max Gildoran - A decent third to La Landiere in the Cathcart at the festival;

Pillaging Pict - Relatively unexposed at this rip. Does come here in good heart after winning cosily last time out at Kelso;

Modular - Probably would be a big price however I thought he ran extremely well for a horse of his ability in the Gold Cup and might have each-way pretensions and;

Exit Swinger - It's a while since he's won however he does possesses a touch of class and I can see why A.P. has chosen to ride him.

This is a real 'pin job', however I'm going to suggest Clan Royal to win off of his light weight who is preferred to Max Gildoran. Pillaging Pict, Ceànannas Mor and Modular can hopefully give you a good run for your money at big odds."
¦ 1^ ~ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬»- Clan Royal
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬»- Macs Gildoran
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬»- Pillaging Pict, [e/w]
Clan Royal sticks on bravely to beat Mac's Gildoran at odds of 12/1

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 31st August
3:00 Audrey Buttery Reunion Novices' Steeple Ch. - £6000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 6f 110yds, penalty £4111.25, 7 runners.
Ashgar, Misty Ridge, Sijujama, and Mount Gay, are the only runners which make any sort of appeal in the second. Punters are likely to have Ashgar down as a banker, especially with "A.P." on board.... I can see where they are coming from, however he is notoriously lazy and makes no appeal at likely odds. He was very hesitant at his obstacles last time out at Southwell and if one of his rivals were to expose this weakness, he could even thrown in the towel and sulk (which he has done before). Misty Ridge and Mount Gay, have run creditably of late over hurdles however it is Mount Gay [a winning point-to-pointer], who may be able to take him on. His second placing at Perth 27 days ago was a sound effort, and he is in my view worth taking a chance with {if they had been eight runners he'd have been an excellent each-way wager}.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬> Mount Gay,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Misty Ridge,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Ashgar [USA],

Mount Gay obliged at odds of 7/1.

MARKET RASEN
Saturday 20th July
Tote Scoop6 Summer Plate. (H´cap. Steeple Ch.). £65000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f, 16 runners.
"As much as I like Demasta, there is so much pace here, that I cant help but think that the front runners may go too fast for their own good here. It makes sense [in my view], to be looking for something likely to be able to travel well... and despite my very negative comments above... I have (since the runners were declared), had a lot of time for the chance of Chicúelo (at each-way odds). I think some horses suit certain trainers, and I think this horse has a better chance of winning a race like this with Martin Pipe than Ian Williams - not because I necessarily think Pipe is a far better trainer than Williams is... its more to do with understanding this type of horse. Nicholashayne - more than most training establishments - does particularly with their foreign purchases. I think this is in part because due to the amount of time/effort they have invested into studying not only French form, but also how certain trainers educate their young horses - adopting if/when necessary previous regime/style of training. Secondly, (more importantly), some French breds improve after a season's acclimatization. A look at this horse's form in France and you'll find, for example, his good third to Sleeping Night and Ilnamar (beaten 8½lengths) in the Prix Morgex (Chase) (Grade 3) , or his third to Sleeping Night and Douze Douze in the Prix Maurice Gillois Grand Steeple-Chase Des 4 Ans (Chase) (Grade 1) in November 2000. He has certainly been given a chance here off of only a handicap rating of 116, and I can't see him not finishing in the first four.... He'll do for me".
"Another winner for "ONE TO JUMP 2003"

WORCESTER
Sunday, June 9th 2002
Tote betXpress Hurdle {H' cap}. £20000 added, 4yo plus, 2m, penalty £13897, 14 runners.
Cupboard Lover, Saragann, Dick The Taxi, Barren Lands, Boater,
Bërnardon, Inn Antique, Barren Lands, and Knight's Emperor make most appeal in a decent handicap hurdle for this time of year. There is bound to be market support for Cupboard Lover, especially after his smooth win at Newbury on the flat earlier this week, however in Bërnardon, and Inn Antique, he meets two potentially well treated "improvers". I have a high regard for Bërnardon, who I literally haven't stopped raving about. This former Group winner in Germany is much better than the form he showed when trailing home at Chepstow last time out, and off of this handicap mark, he is worth chancing.
Bërnardon held on to score at odds of 13/2

ASCOT
Saturday 16th February, 2002
1:30 Amlin Reynoldstown Novices' Steeple Ch. {Gr.2}
Realistically, course and distance winner Arctic Jack, Father McCarten, High Cotton and Ex-French recruit Jimmy Tennis are the likeliest winners of this Grade 2 event. I have a healthy regard for Arctic Jack, and I'm certain he'll run creditably here, however, I've been monitoring Jimmy Tennis's career and always thought that he could make the grade over here. He was one of the better four-year-old chasers in France in 2001 and despite an absence of 140 days hopefully can make best use of the weight for age allowances he receives here.
JIMMY TENNIS won at Odds of  3/1

2:00 William Hill H´cap. Hurdle
A very competitive handicap hurdle with several of these having strong claims. Farmer Jack, Teaatral, Lord Brex, Aspirant Dancer, Creon, Mr. Markham, and Ideal du Bois Beury all have serious claims. Father Jack (who was probably ridden too positively last time out) is sure to go well and probably would have been my selection if Ideal du Bois Beury hadn't been in opposition. I thought he won with a bit in hand under top weight at Leicester last time out and looks very appealing off of the minimum weight.
IDEAL DU BOIS BEURY won at odds of 10/1
