THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL 2000 -

Day Two - Wednesday, 15 March 2000

{2:00} Royal Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle
Monsignor puts his unbeaten record on the line in this and must go well, however it is worth remembering that there are several decent types in this, as well as other open to improvement at the trip. Its appears to be more competitive than the current market suggests. There is plenty of pace in the race and therefore it is likely to be won by a true stayer

POSSIBLES WINNERS;
Best Mate, Solo Mio, Oa Baldixe, and Ballinclay King are nice individual still improving may improve at the trip and/or better ground. Monsignor and Celtic Native has done absolutely nothing wrong and must go well. Bindaree, Man on the Hill, and Tenseesee are surely better than they showed last time, and must enter calculations
FURLONG TO GO’S SELECTION
The logical choice is Monsignor, and many will point out that he has won at the festival before. I am reminded though that so did Dato Star, and at the time of writing that is his only win at the course. Now I'm suggesting that he doesn’t have the ability to win this, he does. There is however, a huge difference between winning two and three runners races and the hustle and bustle of this race, and therefore he is far from the certainty that many have painted him. If you think he's the banker then I couldn’t put you off, however those of you like-minded people will hope that Best Mate, Celtic Native, and Co 'have a go'. I would have gone with Best Mate in opposition to Monsignor, but he seems likely to run on the first day, .therefore the ex flat group horses Solo Mio, and Oa Baldixe are attractive eachway alternatives, and I’ll side with Solo Mio
ARE THERE ANY EACHWAY ALTERNATIVES ?
-
WHAT ABOUT A LONG SHOT ?
If the ground continues to dry out then Tenseesee may surprise at a large price

{2:35}Queen Mother Champion Chase
The Queen Mother Chase, unlike the Gold Cup, is a reliable championship, in which form stands the closest scrutiny, and there have only been a few shock results. The race is normally run at a decent clip, and Edredon Bleu will ensure that this year's renewal is no exception. Looking at his opponents, all bar Celibate appear to want to be held off of the pace, which arguably gives him a better chance of dominating, something which is crucial to his chances, and how the race will formulate
B-622f4 321 Amberleigh House {IRE}8 Michael Hourigan in Ireland
Although he is running well recently I cannot see him figuring at all

1/113-P4 Call Equiname 10 Paul Nicholls
Get this horse back to his best and he'd have an outstanding chance, but he has been nowhere near as good this term. A possible but no more so

31-3343 322 Celibate {IRE} 9 Charlie Mann
Celibate is consistent and can be guaranteed to run an honest race

2122-11 Decoupage 8 Charlie Egerton
More likely to go for the Arkle, but I have do have a doubt about him on undulating courses. Capable of a good run before faltering up the hill

4313-224 Direct Route {IRE} 9 Howard Johnson
Has it all to do Flagship Uberailles on recent efforts, though he has proved that he can be ruffle off of level weights

111/F1p- Dontleavethenest {IRE}10 Roger Curtis
Needs to improve on his seasonal debut and looks up against it

212-5133 Edredon Bleu {FR} 8 Henrietta Knight
Needs decent ground to have a chance. Almost certainly will be allowed to dominate, and poses a serious challenge. Should go well

1111-1121 Flagship Uberalles {IRE}6 Paul Nicholls
Had done little wrong and is justifiably favourite. The only chink in his armoury is his tendency to stop in front, however you'd be surprised if that occurred. It close to his best he must go close

41-3143 Hill Society {IRE} 8 Noel Meade in Ireland
Hasn't shown the right form so far this term and looks up against it

115-0143 Majadou {FR} 6 Martin Pipe
Worthy of serious consideration at 2m4f+, however all the evidence suggests he's up against it even at this track. The Mildmay of Flete is a more suitable target

5/1153-F2r5 Nipper Reed 10 Karen George
Would need to improve on what he's done so far this term and looks up against it

1/11-121ff Nordance Prince {IRE} 9 Venetia Williams
Whilst he is capable of a better performance than the bare essence of the Victor Chandler form, he Would need to improve on what he's done so far for me to entertain him

3/210/-U445 Seek The Faith {USA} 11 Matt Sheppard
No chance !!!!

1245-430 Space Trucker {IRE} 9 Jessica Harrington in Ireland
Would need to improve on what he's done achieved so far over fences and is a little too careful for this. Could be capable of a respectable run on decent ground

40-11p15 The Outback Way {IRE} Venetia Williams
Doesn't seem good enough, however he has won over the track and is possibly likely to be suited by the way the race maps out. He has folded up the hill on all his runs this term, however the trip more than the track could be the significant factor. A lively outsider

POSSIBLES WINNERS;
Flagship Uberailles, Direct Route, Call Equiname, Edredon Bleu
FURLONG TO GO’S SELECTION
Flagship Uberailles has improved so much this term that those horses who’ve taken him on this term seem to have impossible tasks, if the race follows the script,
ARE THERE ANY EACHWAY ALTERNATIVES ?
However if there is going to be a surprise The Outback Way may well provide it and at least we know he’ll appreciate the way the race will be run
WHAT ABOUT A LONG SHOT ?
Hill Society if the ground is good by this time

{3:15} Coral Cup Hurdle
A trappy event which is usually well contested. The runners always go off at a fierce pace, with riders desperate to get that early pitch. Unsurprisingly in recent years, this is a poor race for the favourite, however I believe that the price shouldn't influence your choice anyway. Three types do well in this; {1} Horses with good record in the race; {2} Well weighted novices, there are more risky considering the pace of the race; and {3} Handicappers with good form going into the race.

POSSIBLES WINNERS;
Teaatral, looks as good as ever and looks likely to go well despite 11-11. Auetaler and Carlovent should go well, (Carlovent is unbeaten going left handed despite jumping to his right), Generosa was 2nd last year, and the ground is going her way. Heros Fatal, Afarad, No Discount, Grecian Dart Phariwarmer, and Patras, all have useful form at or around the trip. Exit Swinger, Ross Moff, Vanilla Man, Solo Mio, and Tenseesee are the novices that appeal
FURLONG TO GO’S SELECTION
The novices Tenseesee and Solo Mio(if he goes for this instead of the first) catch my eye, as do Phariwarmer, Exit Swinger, and Carlovent. I suspect Phariwarmer has been laid out for this and gets the nod
ARE THERE ANY EACHWAY ALTERNATIVES ?
Tenseesee, and Exit Swinger appeal and preference would be for the former
WHAT ABOUT A LONG SHOT ?
Capitain Leau is starting to acclmaitise and ran his best race in this country for a while when a respectable 6th at Kempton. He may surprise at large odds

{3.55}Royal Sun Alliance Chase
An intriguing affair which has lost a bit of it's interest as Gloria Victis goes for the Gold Cup instead. The complexion of the race has completely changed. Im not saying it wont be run at a generous pace, but the previous form of his these runners suggest that not many of these will want to force it, bar Deeno's Beeno and Beau

POSSIBLES WINNERS;
Alexander Banquet, Saxophone, and Native Upmanship, represent the best novice form in ireland. Castle Sweep, Windross, Soldat, Moondigua and Lord Noelie have looked good on these shores. Deeno's Beeno, To Your Honour and Kings Road have the ability but aren’t natural jumpers.
FURLONG TO GO’S SELECTION
Native Upmanship does appear to have the best credentials, and in Gloria Victis' absence is taken to win this
ARE THERE ANY EACHWAY ALTERNATIVES ?
Soldat hasn’t really done anything wrong and should run well
WHAT ABOUT A LONG SHOT ?
Connor Macloed on good ground, and High Game

{4.30} ~ National Hunt Chase
This is a 4 mile Chase confined to amateurs, which formerly was the most prestigious race of the festival. This is a true stayers race, as they seem (certainly recently) to go at too fast a pace over the trip, particularly on fast ground. Pace judgment is crucial and it is not unknown for horses to be literally tailed off with a circuit to go, and get involved in the finish. Jockeyship is of the paramount importance and I'd be looking to see what the better jockeys will be on

501414 Hugo De Perro {FR} 5-11-05 Martin Pipe

POSSIBLES WINNERS;
Fandango de Chassy, and Bit on the Hide, and Spot Thedifference have respectable staying form in Ireland. Relaxation, Nethertara, Grangewood King, The Pickled Duke, and Poor Skin look as though the trip will suit. Frileux Royal, and Sulphur Spring have decent form in France and are potentially interesting runners on their first run under rules. Hugo de Perro, and Carryonharry, might surprise on their chasing bow
FURLONG TO GO’S SELECTION
Fandango de Chassy, Relaxation and Sulphur Springs appeal most, Tony Martin has placed him well this term and he is guaranteed to get the trip, however Relaxation has bits of form which suggest he possess a bit more class and I hope he gets the trip. He’s my choice
ARE THERE ANY EACHWAY ALTERNATIVES ?
Sulphur Spring’s 6th in last year’s French Grand National stands out, and he is a winner twice between the flags this season. He reported has a wind problem and is OK and long as he gets a breather in his races. I suspect that has stopped me from making him first choice but he will go well nonetheless
WHAT ABOUT A LONG SHOT ?
Westwinds, very impressive at Larkhill on Sunday will be suited by the trip, and its a pity he’s never run under rules as he’d have a better chance

{5.05} ~ Mildmay Of Flete Handicap Chase
Competitive handicap chase. I wouldn't put you off any of these, and the handicapper seems to have got the balance about right. Majadou confirmed that novices can win this though their record in the Grand Annual is significantly better. The race doesn't really favour front runners, more those kept handy, who tend to capitalise on exaggerated waiting tactics

POSSIBLES WINNERS;
Majadou looks likely to run in and ran well in the Pillar Chase, Aghawhadda Gold showed something like his best form last time, Irbee Native Charm, and Royal Predica, have been running well of late, and should go well. Castle Sweep is more likely to run in the Cathcart but should go well if he runs here instead. Easter Ross looks interesting if he comes here after Sandown on Saturday. Go Roger Go, The Land Agent, Inis Cara, and Commanche Court would be suited by how the race will be run, and are worth considering. Exit Swinger appeals if Martin Pipe finally lets him loose over fences
FURLONG TO GO’S SELECTION
The two who appeal most may not run, as Easter Ross, and Exit Swinger look to be on attractive marks based on what they've done over hurdles. They both would get my vote if either one runs, and the former marginally gets the nod
ARE THERE ANY EACHWAY ALTERNATIVES ?
Majadou may well be if he runs, and he'll give you a good run for your money
WHAT ABOUT A LONG SHOT ?

{5.40} ~ Weatherbys Champion Festival Bumper
Maybe its my perception, but as good as some of these are potentially, this field doesn't leave the same impression on me as in recent years. That said, the race includes some lovely individuals worth noting for lists of horses to follow next term

2 Sweet Iron {FR} 4-10-12 Martin Pipe
11 Wintertide 4-10-12 Richard Fahey
26 Zaffre Noir {IRE} 4-10-12 Mark Pitman

POSSIBLES WINNERS;
Inca, Chives Ready to Rumble, Patriach, It Takes Time, Far Horizon, Wintertide, and Genuine Article seem to represent the best of the form on this side of the water, though its possible that Lannkar, and Submarine can improve on their most recent efforts. Kolleya, Tuesday, Adamant Approach, Ned Kelly, and possible Sigma Dotcomm seem the best of the Irish.
FURLONG TO GO’S SELECTION
The best performances I've seen this season by horses entered in this was Lannkar’s first time out win at Ludlow, Inca’s win at Kempton and Ned Kelly, and Adamant Approach’s wins at Leopardstown. Adamant Approach looked useful that day and is taken to beat these
ARE THERE ANY EACHWAY ALTERNATIVES ?
Kolleya and Tuesday are improving with racing and appeal as eachway options, preference is for the former
WHAT ABOUT A LONG SHOT ?
There isn’t much confidence in Lannkar, and if he runs he may well be an attractive price
