Analysis & Selections by
"a rook"
Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

¦ARTHUR-K
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-[M Chaffey]
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Arthur-K drops to this grade after disappointing under rules when trained by Robert
Alner. His best effort was when finishing third in a novices handicap hurdle at Carlisle in August '00, however that far surpassed
his other efforts. That said, He did at having some ability , so it may be that he finds his level in this sphere. |
 |
¦BRIERY FOX
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- [Mrs Helen Plumbly]
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Briery Fox is a five year old son by Phardante out of
Briery Gale [who raced without success when trained by Time Forster]. He made an encouraging racecourse debut at Garthorpe on 06.04.03, travelling smoothly
throughout, only finding Emperor Roscoe 4lengths too good.. He's
sure to come on for this run and I'd be hopeful that he'd find a
maiden before the end of the season. |
 |
¦
CARAT
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Count K Goess-Saurau
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Carat made an encouraging debut at Woodford on 26.04.03,
finishing second to promising winner Keitho. This five year old son of
Alflora was held up before making smooth progress from halfway and
although he was eventually beaten 15lengths by the winner, the fact that his
division of the maiden was run 4sec. faster than the following division does hopefully bode well for his
future.. we shall see. |
 |
¦IOGA (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- [Tony Eaves]
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Ioga is a seven year old by Video Rock, who had some decnet form in France when trained by Francois
Doumen, winning twice [though lost both of these through technicalities].. He
hasn't reproduced that level of form ion this country and now embarks on a
retrieval mission in this division.. has plenty to prove, however if he returned to form would be as near to a
certainty in a maiden as you can get. |
 |
¦KEITHO
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Richard Barber
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Keitho gets into this list by virtue of his debut win at Woodford on 26.04.03. This
eight year old son of Niels had shown limited ability under rules when trained in Ireland, however he was more than good enough here, drawing clear from 3 out to eventually win by 15lengths.. the fact his time was 4 sec. faster than the next
Division bodes well for a follow up in Restricted company. |
 |
¦KILLOUGHTER
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- [B A Kilpatrick]
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Killoughter is a five year old son of Magical Wonder by Miss Bobby Bennett, who won hurdle races when trained by
Martin Pipe... Looks nice on pedigree and hopefully will show some promise
this season in Maiden company. |
 |
¦KNOCK 'EM BACK ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Richard Mathias
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Knock 'Em Back made an encouraging debut at
Upton-On-Severn on 22.04.03. This seven year old son of Executive Perk travelled kindly throughout before only failing by
ľlength to with the late challenge of the Maidens... That was a solid first effort and despite a slow time, appears to have the
ability to win a maiden before the end of term. |

 |
¦ALITTLEBITOPOWER ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Clive Storey
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Alittlebitopower made a pleasing reappearance at Dalston on 6/4/2003 staying on strongly after the 11th to get within 3 lengths of the winner
Polyphon. As Polyphon is another member of the ePOINT Notebook, it seems logical to add a horse who ran so well in defeat against him. |
 |
¦COFFEE MORNING
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-[D.H.Smyly]
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I seen to have highlighted a lot of maidens this
week, however that's how it falls sometimes... Coffee Morning is a five year old son of Beneficial, our of a Phardante mare, who at
the time of writing has yet to step onto the racecourse.. I'll be hoping for some promise before the end of
the season. |
 |
¦COOLEFIND
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Mrs Judy Wilson
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Coolefind is a five year old by Phardante, out of a mare by The Parson, who embarks on a
career between the flags... Wont be rushed and could pay to follow over time. |
 |
¦COSI CELESTE (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-[T.Eaves]
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Cosi Celeste is a five year old by Apeldoorn, out of a Mendez mare, who a t the time out writing has yet to step
onto the racecourse.. He's a speculative selections, however I like the pedigree and it'll be interesting to see how he gets on during the remainder of the season. |
 |
¦CRESTED PENGUIN ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-G.B.Barlow
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Crested Penguin has an interesting pedigree.. He is a five
year old gelding by Rock Hopper out of Welsh Secret, who won four times over sprint distances for Linda
Ramsden in the nineties... I wonder which side of the pedigree will have the
greatest influence.. lets watch and see. |
 |
¦KENZO III (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-C. Studd
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Kenzo III made an encouraging first appearance under rules at Charlton Horethorn on 6/4/2003 travelling sweetly throughout the race before failing by 1 length to beat Beach Time. Although the time of the race was 10 seconds slower than another division of the race this was an encouraging effort and with careful placement, it wouldn't surprise me if he made it into the winner's enclosure before the end of term.
|
 |
¦KRAC DE MIRANDE (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Robert Waley-Cohen
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»- Robert Waley-Cohen is having a good season with his charges and he will shortly
[weather-permitting] this five year old son of Signé Divine, who has been placed
over fences in the French provinces and has run well at places like Pau,
Fontainebleau, etc... Assuming he's not over faced, it isn't easy to see him winning a maiden this winter. |
 |
¦M'LORD
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Shelia Crow
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-M'Lord has an interesting pedigree. This five year old son of Mister Lord is a son of Dishcloth, who I seem to
remember winner under rules over fences.. He hails from a yard who won't rush him, however he appeals on paper and I'd monitor his progression, probably with next 18months or so in mind. |
 |
¦SCABBARD
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Mrs R.N.Richmond-Watson
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Scabbard is a seven year old by Broadsword, whose had one run under rules..
finishing last to Classified in a Towcester bumper in December '01 [btn 61lengths]... He
probably found things occurring far too quickly for him there, and now that he's
strengthened up, he'll probably be capable of a better show this time around. |
ePOINT Notebook #008
Sunday, March 30, 2003
Whilst I have been away convalescing, I have been trying my best to keep tabs on what's been happening as well as attending a few point-to-points. Some of the selections will come from the meetings at Howick and Garnons who (due to having an excellent viewing for us
lesser-abled viewers) enabled me to have a good look at the action.
There will be a few selections from Siddington as well as Mollington, however as these venues don't cater (as it would appear from my experience) for supporters of the sport who have very limited mobility. In the case of Siddington there was no specific area of viewing and offered to me except a chance to sit by the paddock at the expense of viewing the action, or a position four rows behind parking for those prepared to pay a premium, which effectively meant I could only see the race in the country but not the finishes.
In the case of Mollington, I again encountered no specific provision for disabled viewing which effectively resulted in a free-for-all, first-come-first-served scramble for the best viewing. One of the charms of the sport is that in a lot of places, there is no division of enclosures where Dukes may mingle with Dustmen, however I hope if anyone from those course's hunts happen to read this "observation", I hope that their organisers might remember that to maximise enjoyment of the sport for all only costs a moment of thought and all courses could learn from Garnon's and Howick's example as they clearly appreciated that those who cannot stand have just as much right to be able to see as anyone else.
That's enough from the soapbox.
 |
¦
ALIAS
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-Ian Stark
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Alias is a five year old who has an interesting pedigree, being by the american sire Allegoric, out of
Snowdrifter, a daughter of Strong Gale, who won over hurdles... an interesting pedigree and I'll be interested to see how he gets on this season. |
 |
¦ BEBE BLEU
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-Mrs Angie Malde
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Bebe Bleu drops to point to points having shown signs of ability when trained by Martin Pipe... If she replicated the sort of form shown when
finishing second on her debut in a Warwick bumper in November '01, she should be capable of finding a maiden. |
 |
¦
CATHY COME HOME
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-M.J. Perry
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Cathy Come Home is a half-sister by Bob's Return to winning point-to-pointer Dylan's Bridge. Although she didn't get far on her racecourse debut, there was plenty to like about this 6-year-old who ran at Garnons on 13/3/03. She jumped well enough until disregarding the 6th and deserves another chance to
atone. |
 |
¦
CRAIOVA COMET ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer J.H.Weston
¦ Comments ¦¬»-The racecard at Garnons indicated that this 9-year-old hadn't raced before and if that is true, having looked at him I could see why...this horse is absolutely huge. He must be 18 hands for certain. He didn't run too badly, although eventually was pulled up as he was prominent for the first 2 1/2 miles and there may be some ability in that huge frame. A horse for the moment worth monitoring for signs of ability who could possibly take a maiden at the back end of the season. |
 |
¦DON'TTELLTHETAXMAN
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Mrs A Stevenson
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Don'ttellthetaxman is a six year old gelding by Executive Perk,
who certainly appeals to me on writing, being by Executive Perk, by Calfstown Night, a daughter of
Bargello... plenty of stamina in this bloodline and I can imagine him doing well over fences in time |
 |
¦
EUWILUWIL
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-P J Finn
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Dont know an awful lot about Euwiluwil, who is a five
year old son of Eurobus out o a mare than ran on the flat in Ireland..
Definitely has a bit of stamina in that pedigree and I'll be watching to see how he fears this term. |
 |
¦
GREET YOU WELL ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»- [Lord Northampton]
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Was one of two horses that took my attention in a
division of a Maiden on Garthorpe' s card on 16/3/03. He was held up initially, however made good progress after an error at the 14th to get within a neck of the winner Teeton Glaive. Although this division was run 4 seconds slower than the subsequent race, I believe there is more potential winners in this division, hence his inclusion on our list. |
 |
¦
JILLIE'S NEPHEW
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-Mrs T.Hill
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Jillie's Nephew is a five-year-old gelding by Gildoran who at the time of writing, is yet to race in point-to-points. I like his pedigree and hope he demonstrates some promise by the end of the season. |
 |
¦
KJJIMMY
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-
¦ Comments ¦¬»- This 6-year-old has been running consistently well this season without success and just missed landing a deserved first win when failing by a neck to catch Red Native in a division of the maiden on Buckfastleigh's card on 16/3/2003. The fact that the maiden was run 4 seconds faster than the next quickest division of the maiden, gives the effort a more solid look and Kjjimmy will be unlucky not to win a race by the end of the season. |
 |
¦
NOMADIC
BLADE ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»- D G Atkinson
¦ Comments ¦¬»- Nomadic Blade is at the time of writing an unraced six year old gelding by Nomadic Way by
Dreamago, who was campaigned at this level... appeals on paper and hopefully will show some promise in maiden
company this winter |
 |
¦
NORTHERN DEAL ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-R. T. Bainbridge
¦ Comments ¦¬»-We met some lovely people at Garnons, amongst them was one of the part owners of Northern Deal who won the opening Confined race in decent fashion. We got the impression that they believe this horse has the speed to win under rules on the evidence of what we saw, we'd have to concur with that...don't say you haven't been
warned!!. |
 |
¦
POPPY MAROON
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Appears to have been an unlucky loser on her debut at Didmarton on 1/3/2003. After being held up, she made smooth headway from the 11th to have every chance before making a bad mistake 2 out. She rallied bravely and was only 3/4 length down at the line and was probably an unlucky loser. I'd be disappointed if she didn't win before the end of the season. |
 |
¦
RICKY B
¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Made an encouraging debut in a 2 1/2 mile Maiden at Hornby Castle on 2/3/2003. He was the victim of his own demise as he appears to have pulled too hard throughout and despite leading for a lot of the journey, couldn't withstand the late challenge of Agent
Provocateur who outstayed him to win by a length. If connections can channel his enthusiasm, it will not surprise me if he went one better before the end of the season. |
 |
¦
RISINGTON ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»- Miss V M Williams
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Venetia Williams has a couple of pointers racing this season and I
certainly like the look of this five year old by Afzal, out of a winning
chaser.. I hope he'll show some promise in maiden company this season. |
 |
¦ ROLLO ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-
¦ Comments ¦¬»-Rollo is a five-year-old by Roselier out of Connemara Queen. He has a very good jumping pedigree and I shall be interested to see how he performs during the remainder of the season |
 |
¦
SIR LANCELOT ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-G B Tarry
¦ Comments ¦¬»- Liked what I saw of him at Mollington on 23/3/03 and this 8-year-old grey jumped well and travelled nicely throughout until weakening four out, pulling up just before the 3rd last. This was a typical first run for the Tarry's and I wouldn't be surprised if he improved on this before the end of the season. |
 |
¦
THE LUDDITE ¦¬»-
¦ The Trainer ¦¬»-
¦ Comments ¦¬»-The Luddite was the other horse to catch my eye at the Garthorpe meeting on 16/3/2003. Making his first appearance on a racecourse, The Luddite was always prominent, leading at the 15th before being caught on the run-in by Teeton Glaive and Greet You Well...compensation awaits. |

¦ALEXANDERTHEGREAT
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-J P Blakeney
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Alexanderthegreat is a five year old by Supreme Leader, by a Royal Fountain mare, who at the time of writing
hasn't raced, however gets the "thumbs up" from me on breeding.. he could be anything, however I'll be
satisfied if he's shown some promise before the end of the season. |
 |
¦BILLY COLEMAN ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-David Brace
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Billy Coleman is a five year old by Hollow Hand,
out of Little Treat.. which makes him a half brother to Evan's Collier Boy, who has done so well for David Brace in this sphere over the last four seasons or so. He looks promising on paper and it'll be
interesting to see how he fares during the season. |
 |
¦CANNON BRIDGE ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- K Pritchard
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Cannon Bridge; a five year old by Definite Article, out of Hit For Six, [a winner over 5f at two] is another
newcomer to pointing that catches the eye. He is unproven over the trip,
however he ran encouragingly when plugging on to finish 2nd [btn 30lengths] to Taming in a
novice hurdle at Uttoxeter in June '02... He stayed on nicely through some beaten horses in the last half-mile, suggesting that a step up in trip
should suit... I'd expect some promise from him before the end of
the season. |
 |
¦COLDABRI
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Coldabri appears to have caught the eye on her second start of the season...
seemingly staying on fr0om an impossible position to finish 6th [btn 50lengths] behind Rodney Trotter at Whitwick Manor on 22.02.03. The time of the race was good and
therefore Coldabri may be consideration much better than her bare
form suggests.... she may worth watching out for in a similar event
before the end of the season. |
 |
¦CREATON COVERT
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Creaton Covert was in the process of running a big race on his
second start at Market Rasen, when capsizing at the 12th in a division of the Maiden race [eventually won by Scottish Roots]... It was a little too early in the race to be certain what may have happened, however the time of the race reads
favourably with the Mens Open run earlier in the day, and if he can hold
his jumping together would appear to have strong claims of landing
a maiden before the end of the season. |
 |
¦JOLLY RED (FR)
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-[Terry Neill]
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Jolly Red returns to the racecourse having disapointed on his debut in a Taunton bumper in
October '01.... He was strongly fancied that day, however weakened
two out having led for the majority of the trip. This six year old son of Cyborg, [by Orne II, who won placed in AQPS races], may be better than he showed that
day and could be worth giving the benefit of the doubt to. |
 |
¦KEPI ROYAL (FR) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Stuart Campbell
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Kepi Royal; a five year old by Royal Charter, out of Chic
Lille [who was placed on the flat], is another newcomer that catches
the eye... I have no great expectations in the short term, however I do
think that there is potential here and hopefully it surfaces before the end of the season. |
 |
¦ LOUGH DANTE ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Henry Daly
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-How long before we see Lough Dante running under
rules for Henry Daly?... Surely not too long if he shows some promise
this winter between the flags... He looks nice on paper, being by Phardante, out of
Shannon Lough [a Deep Run mare]... He certainly catches the eye on pedigree.. i will certainly be watching his progression during the reminder of the season. |
 |
¦MAGICAL ATTRACTION (USA)
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Mrs A Price
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I'd love to know the thoughts of Juddmonte Farms, where they
brought together the American sire Exbourne, and the Dewan mare
Abeer, and eventually produced Magical Attraction.... who is a particularly
attractive six year old, who has plenty of size, however judging
on his first appearance last term in a Hereford bumper in October '02, is a touch on the slow side [btn 99lengths] .... I cant
believe he's that bad, and I take some encouragement from Norton Wood who
wasn't that far in front of him in that race, who I've also added to this list... Dont let me down Mrs Price!!! |
 |
¦NORTON WOOD
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-Mrs A Price
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Any horse that jumps atrociously yet gets
within striking distance of winning a race, is worthy of our consideration - therefore Norton Wood may be worth following after doing just this before running out at the 14th in a division of the maiden at Whitwick Manor on 22.02.03. Clearly connections have a bit to work on here,
however if he can get that close to success jumping poorly, he may be worth sticking with as you'd hope his method improves as he gains experience. |
 |
¦OURMAN
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Mrs A Bell
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Ourman caught my eye last term when he raced under rules
for Tom Tate... He won a little race at Sedgefield in January '02, as well as
finishing in the frame on several other occasions... He hasn't raced since unseating his rider in an intermediate chase at
Uttoxeter in May '02 however there was improvement still to come from this
seven year old and I wouldnt be surprised if he did well in this
sphere this winter. |
 |
¦SILVER SAMUEL (NZ) ¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»-S A Brookshaw
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I'm interested to see how Silver Samuel fares between the flags this winter. This six year old son of the
New Zealand sire Hula, has only had one race in public, at Sandown in February '02, however it was a fair
one as he was close up until weakening and hanging in the final quarter
mile, eventually finishing 9th to Lord Sam [btn 41lengths]. That was certainly encouragingly
[especially as several of the placed horses have done well this season under rules].. If he can translate that form he has very good claims in maiden
company. |
 |
¦SMITHLYN
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Mrs Kim Bailey
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-Smithlyn is yet another newcomer to
this discipline who I feel may do well. This six year old gelding by Greensmith, is out of
Sunlyn , herself a winner over herself, who has gone on to produce several winner over
obstacles... He is bred for the game and assuming his sights are
realistically aimed should have decent claims in maiden company this
winter |
 |
¦UP TO THE MINUTE
¦:¬»-
¦The Trainer¦:¬»- Miss Rachel Fear
¦.C.O.M.M.E.N.T.S.¦:¬»-I thought Up To The Minute ran well enough in defeat behind Beacon Boy in a division of the maiden at
Holnicote on 22.02.03 [btn 3lengths] to suggest that a win this term in similar is a distinct possibility. He was another that was
probably given a little too much too do [in what appears to have been a slowly run
affair] and given more time may be able to use his strength [his ability to stay on strongly] to better
use in his races.. |
