Analysis & Selections by

I þOÏNTER

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

"ePOINT Notebook" - Our list of Point-to-Pointers & Hunter Chasers to look out for during the season.

ePOINT NOTEBOOK #006
Saturday, January 31.
Week four of the season and we've included a mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran well last Sunday;

AN CAPALL DUBH
br, g. Air Display (USA) - Lady Of Wales
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Derek Pugh
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- An Capall Dubh probably doesn´t have as much potential as some of our choices this week, however this eight-year-old son of Air Display has certainly proven he has the ability to win races in this country, boasting wins in a 6yo+ Geldings Maiden at Lisgoold in January '03 as well as successes in a "Winner Of Two" at Kilmarnock in March '03 and a Maiden Hunters Chase at Clonmel three weeks later. He was outclassed by Joe Blake in the Tetratema Perpetual Cup at Gowran Park in April, however he has finished second twice in Open company since that effort and with careful placement is definitely capable of winning races this season... I hope connections don't initially over-face him
BEAUCHAMP ORACLE
gr, g. Mystiko (USA) - Beauchamp Cactus
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- E C Everall
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I was encouraged by Beauchamp Oracle's debut effort in the 2 1/2 mile Open Maiden at Dunthrop on 25/1/04. Held up initially, Beauchamp Oracle made steady headway from the rear to be prominent by the 9th obstacle, a manoeuvre that he maintained until failing to quicken after the last, eventually coming home 4 lengths behind the winner Gillies Nephew. He is sure to come on for that effort and over 3 miles, seems to have a good chance of landing a maiden before the end of the season.
BILINGUAL
b, g. Prince Daniel (USA) - Gymcrak Cyrano
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ian Stark
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Championship winning event rider Ian Stark has produced a couple of useful pointers over the last coupl e of seasons therefore I'll be interested to see how Bilingual performs during this season. He is a five-year-old gelding by Prince Daniel, out of Gymcrak Cyrano, (a daughter Cyrano De Bergerac), who won on the flat and over hurdles, and is sure to have been well prepared by connections. I'll be monitoring his progress in Maiden company throughout the season and hopes he shows promise before the end of term.
BOBTAIL
b, g. Topanoora - Death Or Glory
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- R J French
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I'll be interested to see if Bobtail builds on a promising first season between the flags. This five-year-old son of Topanoora, showed promise in three of his four starts in Ireland, winning a four-year-old maiden on the last occasion at Dromohane in May '03. He finished fifteenth, [btn. 42lengths] on his only other start in a bumper at Cork two months later, however I'd be prepared to ignore that effort and hope he builds on these efforts during the remainder of the season.
CANTERBURY JACK
b, g. Supreme Leader - Crest Of The Hill
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- P J Finn
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Canterbury Jack is one of several interesting ex-Irish pointers amongst this week's entries. This seven-year-old son of Supreme Leader showed promise in three Irish points during the 2002 campaign before landing a five and six-year-old geldings maiden at Skibereen in March 2002. He subsequently joined Martin Pipe and ran well in three novice hurdles, finishing in the frame on each occasion. It isn't outstanding form however I would be surprised if it wasn't good enough for him to be successful in Restricted company at some stage this season.
EURO BOB
ch, g. Bob's Return - Aughclogeen Run
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--William Rucker
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Lightly-raced Euro Bob could build on promise shown in Ireland in 2003. This seven-year-old son of Bob's Return ran five times between the flags in Ireland, showing his first sign of real form in a maiden at Dromahane in January where he finished 2nd to Central Billing (beaten 15 lengths) after failing to complete at Killeagh two weeks later, Euro Bob did not appear until running in a six-year-old geldings maiden at Dungourney in November where he justified odds of 4/5 to beat Dernier Mot by 6 lengths. Clearly he is on the upgrade and is one to look out for in Restricted company during the season.
FAUGÈRE
ch, g. Jupiter Island - Pinch
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--J J Boulter
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Faugère returns to the pointing ranks after showing some ability when trained by Paul Nicholls. This eight-year-old son of Jupiter Island has shown a little ability in points two seasons ago, and was given a couple of efforts under rules far and away the best of these was his second to Palua, [btn. ½lenght], in a maiden hurdle at Folkestone in February '03. He made that horse pull out all the stops that day and if he is able to bounce back from a dreadful effort at Newbury a month later, probably wouldn´t have to improve much to win a maiden this term
HI TECH MAN
ch, g. Presenting - Cherry Mist
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- E J Cantillon
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Hi Tech Man is one of several horses to have attracted my attention from the card at Ampton on 25/01/04, mainly because he was given a quiet introduction, popping around the back until being pulled up at the 17th. It seems odd to suggest possibly following a horse from the slowest race of the day, however I get the impression that this son of Presenting was badly in need of the experience and the run will not be lost on him. Vindication of his choice will definitely be more prominent positioning before the end of the season.
JINFUL DU GRAND VAL (FR)
b, g. Useful (FR) - Marine (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Jamie Alexander
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Despite his name and pedigree, Jinful Du Grand Val isn't an import from France... he is in fact an Irish import, from the Arthur Moore academy, who has three runs to his name, the best of which is probably his debut effort when he came 2nd to Small Shots in a five-year-old maiden at Áthlacca in April 2002, beaten 10 lengths. He hasn't run since trailing home behind Ballyconnell in a novice chase at Tramore in August 2003, however there is very little mileage on his clock and he appears to have enough ability at the very least to be able to win in maiden company.
LEATHERBACK
b, g. Turtle Island - Phyllode
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--J M Turner
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Leatherback could be a really interesting recruit to pointing this term.... if he can jump. This six-year-old son of Turtle Island cost Michael Tabor 95,000Irgns, and as juvenile and this half-brother to a juvenile 6f winner, had the speed to win at two for Nigel Callaghan, before winning a 1m2f handicap at Doncaster in October '01 the following season. He was largely disappointing over hurdle, only showing a win in a conditional jockeys' maiden hurdle to his name, however his second to Greenhope at Kempton in December '01 demonstrated he still retained some ability. He has a handicap mark of around 110 at present and relatively little mileage. As long as he stays, [his dam Phyllode, was lightly-raced maiden with a good middle-distance pedigree], and can jump these larger obstacles, his ability could well see him home in this grade.. we shall see.
LE PRINCE
ch, g. Le Moss - Yuan Princess
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. Melanie Williams
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I was encouraged by the performance of Le Prince in the Ladies Open at Ampton on 25/01/04. Formerly a fair novice staying chaser when in Henry Daly's care, Le Prince made his first appearance for almost 2 years in quiet a competitive ladies event and ran with great prominence, showing up prominently until weakening three from home. Under the circumstances, a 16 length defeat by Kincora is a respectable effort and one I hope he is able to build on during the remainder of the current campaign.
MISTER FALCON (FR)
b, g. Passing Sail (FR) - Falcon Crest (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- S. Flook
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Former useful juvenile hurdler Mister Falcon could be an interesting recruit to the pointing ranks this season. This seven-year-old son of Passing Sail won three times during the 2001/2 season for Martin Pipe, however has been dogged by injury and has not run under rules since pulling up at Newton Abbot in August 2002. He did seem to be on the decline then however the change of scenery and lesser surroundings could well spark a revival and the ability shown thus far would see him in a positive light in this level of company. An initial watching brief may be best advised.
PA PIERRE
b, g. Pierre - Shoon River
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- M K Titchner
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Pa Pierre is returned to our horses to follow list having missed the final cut of ONE TO JUMP '04 in October. This six-year-old son of Pierre ticked all the requirements I wanted, being nicely bred with a hint of promise, having shown up prominently in a Confined Maiden at Askeaton in January '03, [finishing 4th to Euro Charm, btn. 26lengths], before improving of that effort to land a 5yo Geldings Maiden at Belharbour a month later. He is sure to have improved physically since those runs and I'd hope he could build on these efforts.. time will tell.
SANTÏ (FR)
b, g. Brief Truce (USA) - Sun River
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- S.N. Wiltshire
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Santï is an import from France who could find winning opportunities in this grade. This six-year-old son of Brief Truce (out of a Last Tycoon mare) showed some ability when trained by Jean-Paul Gallorini winning a juvenile hurdle during the 2001/2 season. His recent form isn't great, however he did finish 2nd over fences at Lyon in October 2002 and might just retain enough ability to win a race in this grade.
SWITCHBACK
b, g. Doubletour (USA) - Two-Shoes
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. S Smith
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Switchback offered up plenty of encouragement for the remainder of the season on his debut at Alnwick on 25/1/04/. Held up initially in mid-division, Switchback made steady progress from the 11th and although not ever looking likely to beat the winner Native Alibi, would almost certainly have finished 2nd, but for falling at the last. If that error has not dented his confidence, there will be plenty of opportunities for him during the remainder of the season.
THE SYCOPHANT
ch, g. Gone Fishin - Mitsubishi Art
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- S. Dixon
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- The Sycophant made a bold bid to win first time out at Black Forest Lodge on 25/1/04. Held up in the rear initially in Division 2 of the Open Maiden, The Sycophant made smooth headway from the 14th to lead after the 3rd last. He was unable to sustain this effort and was readily passed by the eventual winner Bessie Bunter, however he maintained 2nd place (btn. 10 lengths) and the time of this division was 7 seconds faster than the other two divisions on the day. I'd like to think that performance was good enough to land a similar event before the end of the season.

ePOINT NOTEBOOK #005
Saturday, January
24.
Week four of the season and we've included a mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran well last Sunday;

ASHGREEN
b, g. Afzal - Space Kate
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- S Turner
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Ashgreen ran well behind Lord Atterbury in the Mens Open Race at Barbury Racecourse on 18/11/04. This seven-year-old son of Afzal, was outclassed by the winner, however the way he stuck having made most until the eleventh fence was encouraging and a twenty-five lengths defeat by the favorite for the Cheltenham Foxhunters in a race run in a decent time reads well in the context of his future prospects this season. You wouldn´t be surprised if he won a race before the end of the season.
BLACK COLLAR
br, m. Bob's Return - Rosemoss
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. G B Walford
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Black Collar caught my eye amongst the entries at Market Rasen. This five-year-old daughter of Bob's Return, is out of Rosemoss; [a daughter of Le Moss], who was placed over obstacles when trained by Martin Pipe in the early nineties. She is sure to be well prepared by present connections and should, [hopefully] show some promise before the end of the season.
CAMDEN CARRIG
br, g. Camden Town - Tinnecarrig Grove
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--J G Phillips
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Camden Carrig is interesting entrant on the card at Dunthrop. This nine-year-old son of Camden Town, has been plying his craft in Irish point-to-points, and come to the UK having finished in the frame on his last eight starts, winning twice; a maiden at Wexford in March '02, and most recently a "Winner of One" race at Ballon in January '03. He clearly possess ability and if he simply retained that consistency, could be good enough to win in the Uk at some stage this season.
DRUMHORC
ch, g. Zaffaran (USA) - Dim Drums
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--D V Gardner
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- We'll be hoping for some sparkle from Drumhorc this season. This seven-year-old son of Zaffaran ran three time between the flags in Ireland last term, pulling up on his debut at Ballysteen in April '02, before finishing 12lengths second to Coopers Loft, [who went on to win a Hunter Chase] at Clonmel in February '03, before winning his only other start, where he outstayed Douthinkhesaurus at Áthlacca in April. The formlines through Coopers Loft are encouraging and you'd hope he'd find a winning level in the UK this season... we shall see.
EURO CHANGEOVER
ch, g. Phardante (FR) - Tawney Lass
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- A R Trotter
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Euro Changeover is another interesting ex-Irish pointer declared to run this week. This nine-year-old was lightly-raced, however he does boast winning form, having won a 5&6yo Geldings Maiden at Dromohane in October '01, as well as a win in his latest point-to-point, where he beat The Rebel Lady, [now with Henrietta Knight] in a "Winner Of Two" race at Boulta in November '02. He's difficult to gauge, however he clearly did have some ability and if he translates that to the racecourse, could well make it into the winners` enclosure this season.
HELIOTROPE
b, m. Hushang - Jennie's First
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- David Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Heliotrope caught my eye amongst the entries. This five-year-old daughter of Hushang is out a Jennie's First, which makes her a full-sister to winning chaser Horus, who won at Ascot earlier this season. as well as Henrietta who has two races races under rules after winning in this grade last season. She is clearly bred to be useful and will be hard to beat in Maiden company this winter if she inherits any of this ability.
HIGH FIELDS
b, g. Sovereign Water (FR) - Once Bitten
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Lord Daresbury
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- High Fields is a promising recruit to pointing. This five-year-old son of Sovereign Water ran three times in bumpers last term, arguably showing his best piece of form when finishing third to Moonlit Harbour at Wetherby in February '03, [btn. 9½lengths]. He didn´t match that effort in subsequent efforts at Carlisle and Southwell, however the experience will definitely not have been lost on him and I won't be surprised if he were to show up prominently in Maiden company this season.
INDIEN DU BOULAY (FR)
ch, g. Chef De Clan II (FR) - Radesgirl (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Major General C A Ramsay
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Indien Du Boulay is on a recovering mission after disappointing under rules last season. This eight-year-old son of Chef De Clan II was so promising as a novice in 2001, and sustained that for most of 2002, however winning at Musselburgh in December, went backwards and failed to complete in his final three starts, most recently behind Hallyards Gael at Perth in May. At his best, his mark of 111 would be more than good enough to win an ordinary hunter chase, nevermind an Open race, and it will be a shame if he has regressed so rapidly not to be sweetened up in this lesser company.
IS WONDERFUL (USA)
ch, g. Diesis - Falling In Love
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- J Rudge
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Is Wonderful is another horse to catch my eye amongst the entries, this time at Dunthrop. This six-year-old is impeccably bred, being a son of Diesis, out of a daughter of Sadler's Wells. Initially costing 160,000Irgns, Is Wonderful is a half-brother to US Grade 3 winner Golden Temper, and therefore a high-ranking career was clearly the intention. It didn´t quite work out that way, even though he did show ability when with Amanda Perrett, winning a 1m6f maiden at Yarmouth in June '01, and was rated 84 at the peak of his powers. He was second on his last start over hurdles at Huntingdon in November '01 and assuming he takes to the larger obstacles, could be still talented enough to win races in this sphere.
KAYLEIGH
b, m. Kylian (USA) - Easter Baby
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- R. M. Green
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Kayleigh made a promising starts to her point-to-point career with an encouraging third in the PPORA Club Member Mares Race at Barbury Racecourse on 18/11/04. This six-year-old daughter of Kylian, was held up early on, until making smooth progress from the thirteenth, which she sustained until being tapped for speed after two out. Despite this she was only 3lengths down at the post and although the race was weak-looking on paper, There was enough promise shown to suggest that a similar race was within her compass.
KILLARD POINT
b, g. Old Vic - Chic And Elite
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--G T H Bailey
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--I'll be monitoring Killard Point 's progression this season. This five-year-old is by Old Vic, out of Chic And Elite, [a daughter of Deep Run], who won over fences when trained by Jonjo O'Neill in the early-nineties. You couldn´t really want more in terms of pedigree and assuming he is sure to have been well prepared, looks the type to show potential before the end of the season.
LE MILLENAIRE (FR)
br, g. Ragmar (FR) - Ezaia (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--S H Shirley-Beavan
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Le Millenaire is a nice prospect for this season. This five-year-old gelding by Ragmar, out of a daughter of Iron Duke, has had one start, in a bumper at Ayr in February, where he was prominent until six furlongs out, eventually weakening out of contention to finish fourteenth, 33lengths behind the winner Monet's Garden, [who has won over hurdles this season]. The experience will have done him the world of good and I'd be hopeful that he can progress as he gains experience this winter.
MISSY MOSCOW
b, m. Moscow Society (USA) - Bright Shares
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. M Dickinson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Missy Moscow is another interesting import from Ireland. This six-year-old daughter of Moscow Society, joins present connection, having won her maiden by 8lengths at Killaloe at February '03, before following up next up in a "Winners of One" at Belclare a month later. She was tried in hunter chases on her only other start and ran creditably, finishing 9lengths behind Inish Mist at Gowran Park in April. If he replicates this form you'd hope she could win races, especially mares-only events.
OUR WEDDINGPRESENT (USA)
ch, g. Known Fact (USA) - All A Lark
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--David Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I "ummed and 'erred about whether Our Weddingpresent should be included in this feature. I had previously considered putting him in previous ONE TO JUMP features, and since this is effectively dropping in Grade, we had to have another look at him here. This son of Known Fact is out of the mare All A Lark, [a daughter of General Assembly, who was a juvenile winner in Ireland], and is a half-brother to several winners here and the US. He ran six times for Martin Pipe, never promising to trouble the judge between October '01 and May '02. That isn´t going to be good enough to win a maiden, however he was a backward three-year-old and its quite conceivable that he is beginning to grown up as he matures....He's going to need to win, however he is in the right place to do so.
RATHNALLY PARK
b, g. Henbit (USA) - Pollerton's Pride
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Derek J. Harding-Jones
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Rathnally Park caught my eye amongst the entries at Ampton. This seven-year-old son of Henbit, has joined present connections from Anthony Martins yard in Ireland, where he ran three times, winning a maiden novices hurdle over 2miles at Wexford on his final start in May. This horse is unproven at the trip, however at least we know he possesses ability and I would like to think that he shows some promise in this sphere before the end of the season.
RED JUPITER
b, g. Jupiter Island - Glen Dancer
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--W M Aitchison
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Red Jupiter's presence amongst the entries certain attracted my attention. This seven-year-old son of Jupiter Island should plenty of signs of possessing ability when trained by Richard Guest last term, although his form-figures don´t exactly inspire confidence. He was a big baby who was looked after by that shrewd outfit and whilst I don´t expect him to suddenly become a world-beater, I won't be at all surprised if he were to show up prominently before the end of the season.
SEARCH PARTY (FR)
b, g. Efisio - Hunt The Thimble (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Mrs.. P A Russell
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--At first glance Search Party doesn´t appear to have much prospect of success in points. This five-year-old had shown virtually nothing in seven starts at two and three when trained by Tim Easterby, the closest he came to winning was when he came seventh to Penny Pictures, [btn. 6lengths] over seven furlongs at Catterick in August '01. However once you scrape away the outer layer, you'll discover that this son of Efisio is a half-brother not only to a 1m6f winner in France, but more significantly, Roi de la Chasse, who was a winner over both hurdles and fences. I wouldn´t dream of suggesting he a potential high-flyer, however allowing him to mature before embarking on a career over obstacles seems to be a good move and I hope that we see some progression before the end of the season.
SERVES YOU RIGHT
ch, g. Alderbrook - Balancing Act
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--W Shand Kydd
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Serves You Right is another newcomer that has attracted my attention this week. This five-year-old is another potentially well-bred individual, being a son of Alderbrook, out of Balancing Act, a daughter of Balinger, who has produced winners under rules. He looks good on paper, and is sure to have been well schooled. I would be disappointed if there isn´t any promise shown before the end of this season.

ePOINT NOTEBOOK #004
Saturday, January 17.
Week three of the season and we've included a mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran well last Sunday;

ANOTHER LEADER
b, g. Lord Americo - Moyglen
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- George I Cooper
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Another Leader made an encouraging debut on his racecourse debut at Higham on 11/04/04. This seven-year-old son of Lord Americo, showed up prominently until the fourteenth in the second division of the maiden won by Jacob's Choice, eventually weakening to finishing 25lengths behind the winner. By all accounts that run will not be lost on this individual and given natural progression should improve of this run as the season continues
CARAIYNI
b, g. Be My Chief (USA) - Caraiyma
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Philip Newton
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I noted Caraiyni 's name amongst this week's entries at Barbury Racecourse. Tihs seven-year-old son of Be My Chief, is out of one of the Aga Khan's mares Caraiyma, (a daughter of Shahrastani). He didn´t cut much ice when he raced on the flat, and over obstacles in Ireland during the '00/'01 season, however he did show some promise in two of his three runs between the flags, finishing second to Swordlestown in an Adjacent Maiden at Durrow in April '02, as well as occupying the same position in a similar event at Castletown-Geoghegan a month later. I think he will do extremely well to figure at Barbury Racecourse, however there will be easier opportunities for him during the season and it will not be a surprise if he were to make it into the winners` enclosure before the end of the season.
CHORAL DREAM
b, g Yashgan - Daisy's Dream
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--R S Hunnisett
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Choral Dream is another horse we noted amongst this week's entries at Barbury Racecourse. Tihs seven-year-old son of Yashgan, ran in Ireland last term, winning two of his five starts, winning the last two; a Maiden at Wexford in March '03, as well as beating Wisley Wonder by a length to land an Open Race at Stradbally in May '03. There is more improvement to come and whatever occurs this weekend, you'd hope he could replicate that form in similar events on this side of the Irish Sea this season.
HI RUDOLF
br, g. Ballet Royal (USA) - Hi Darlin`
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- H. J. Manners
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Hi Rudolf could be worth following, once he has regained full fitness. This useful ex-pointer was beginning to find his feet under rules after winning a novice Steeple-CH´. at Fontwell Park, when taking a heavy fall when travelling ominously well at Chepstow in March '03. He only lasted until the fifth in the Ladies' race at Larkhill on 11/11/04, however if he can get back to his best there will surely be winning opportunities for this individual.
KATARINO (FR)
b, g. Pistolet Bleu - Katevana (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Robert Waley-Cohen
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Katarino drops to this grade after coming down at The Chair in the 2003 Grand National. He has had many problems since winning the 1999 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, so owes connection nothing and judging by his run in the Mens Open at Larkhill on 11/11/04, [where he was travelling well when being brought down at the thirteenth fence], there are still winning opportunities for him in Open Races or Hunter Chases.
THE GRANBY
b, g. Insan (USA) - Elteetee
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--A C Kemp
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Multi winning chaser The Granby is another useful performer, who takes a drop in class this term. This eight-times winner over hurdles and fences, struggled last term against the likes of Lord Transcend, Slooghy and last time out Springfield Scally at Doncaster, however there won't be a lot of pointers who begin this season with a B.H.B. rating of 123. If he still retains ability, and enthusiasm], he should find winning opportunities.

ePOINT NOTEBOOK #003
Thursday, January 8.
Week two of the season and we've included a mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran well at Cottenham last Sunday;

AS DE LA GARENNE (FR)
b, g. Sleeping Car (FR) - Maria Theresa (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- R Waley-Cohen
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Robert Waley-Cohen is putting together a really useful string of pointers and they all do appear to be worth a second glance. Amongst their maidens for the season is As De La Garenne, a five-year-old by Sleeping Car, out of the mare Maria Theresa. He hasn´t as yet made it to the racecourse, however he appeals on pedigree, and hopefully shows some promise before the end of the season.
BLACK KITE
br, g. Desert King (IRE) - Snoozeandyoulose
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--H J Manners
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- It'll be interesting to see how Black Kite gets on between the flags this season. John Manners' five-year-old is by Desert King, out of Snoozeandyoulose, [a daughter of Scenic], who won over seven furlongs in Ireland in the early-nineties, and has produced a point-to-point winner in the shape of Boozeandyoulose. He was very green when highly tried on his debut behind Cornish Rebel at Newbury in early February '03 and wasn´t much better in a maiden hurdle two weeks later, that said he had potential without being outstanding and is possibly going to be best judged when he finally grows up.. we'll see how he gets on this winter
CASH 'N CARROTS
b, g. Missed Flight - Rhiannon
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- R C Harper.
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Cash `n Carrots is one of three horses to take the eye from Cottenham' s meeting on 07/01/04. This five-year-old son of Missed Flight was in the process of running a fine race on his racecourse debit when tipping up at the last. By all accounts he was making significant progress on the winner Gray Knight at the last, and as this race for over 2m4f, it does at least give hope for the future when this horse eventually steps up to 3miles. As the time of his division of the maiden was 4 sec. slower than that won by Viscount Bankes half an hour later, it may be when this occurs that Cash `n Carrots ultimately gets his head in front where it matters most.
GREYBROOK LAD
br, g. Norwich - Princess Project
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--S C Robinson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Greybrook Lad could be worth a second look this term. This six-year-old son of Norwich has only run twice, in two point-to-points in Ireland, pulling up, after leading a long way at Killeagh in January, before coming eighth on his only other start in a similar event at Liscarroll two months later. There may be plenty of scope for improvement and we wont be surprised if he made the frame before the end of the season.
FANE COUNSEL
b, g. Leading Counsel (USA) - Fane Heights
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Sheila Crow
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Fane Counsel has been put up as a horse to follow this term. This son of Leading Counsel, has been bought to race in this country after two runs in point-to-points last term in Ireland, where he won a five-year-old maiden at Lisgoold in January, before finishing a distance behind Wing Back, [now with Mouse Morris in Ireland] and Celestial Gold, [who did so well for David Pipe last term]. He clearly has ability and will be difficult to beat if he translate that level of form in Restricted company.
LEADER DU TURF (FR)
b, g. Panoramic - Rose Du Turf (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- C W W Dupont
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Leader Du Turf is a five-year-old at Panoramic, out of Rose Du Turf, [a daughter of Le Vergas], who won two steeplechases in 1989. He is yet to race under rules, however he is nicely bred and it'll be interesting to see how he progresses this season.
MAGNUS VERITAS
br, g. Jolly Jake (NZ) - Golden´s Monkey
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- S C Robinson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Magnus Veritas may be worth noting in the future despite a poor run in the Restricted race run at Cottenham' s meeting on 07/01/04. This six-year-old son of Jolly Jake, ran four times in Ireland before that effort, showing promise on his debut behind Fane Counsel at Lisgoold in January before winning a five-year-old maiden at Knockanard in February '03. He was beaten a long way at Cottenham, which is a little worrying, however he may have needed that and maybe he deserves another chance in a similar event.
PREACHER BOY
b, g. Classic Cliché - Gospel
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--J. A Keighley
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Preacher Boy is anther newcomer who caught my eye amongst the entries this season. This five-year-old is a son of Classic Cliché, out of the winning chaser Gospel. There is an interesting mix of speed and stamina here, and it'll be interesting to see how this horse performs as the season progresses.
SILVER LAKE
gr, g. Roselier (FR) - Over The Pond
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- F. R. Jackson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Silver Lake made and encouraging reappearance at Cottenham on 07/01/04. This ten-year-old son of Roselier was formerly a useful point-to-pointer in Ireland, before joining Noel Chance's yard. I remember he was strongly fancied for the 2001 National Hunt Steeple-CH´. at the Cheltenham Festival, before injury blocked that road for him, and it has clearly taken plenty of patience to get him back to the track, however connection must have been really pleased with the way he ran, never far off the pace staying on nicely to finish 9lengtsh behind Guilsborough Gorse. I'm not sure what his immediate plans are, however he wouldn´t on this evidence need to improve much to win this.
SPANISH DOLPHIN
b, g. Dolphin Street (FR) - Alhambra Palace
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- C W W Dupont
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Spanish Dolphin is a another newcomer who took my eye amongst this week's entries. This five-year-old is a son of Dolphin Street, out of Alhambra Palace, a daughter of Cyrano De Bergerac. I wasn´t immediately sure about the pedigree, which seems to have more pace than stamina in it, however Dolphin Street produced winners over 2m4f last year, so we'll wait and see how this gelding performs before passing judgment.
THE FOOTSY
br, g. The Footman - Lucky Story
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Janet Hughes
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- The Footsy is an eight-year-old by The Footman, out of the mare Lucky Story, which makes The Footsy a half-brother to multi-winning point-to-pointer Lucky Christopher. This family seems to always improve as they mature so although there isn´t much mileage on the clock, its quite possible that we may not have seen the best of this one... we shall see.
WHAT NEXT
b, g. Beau Sher - Sandywish
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- N A E Jones
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- What Next is a seven-year-old by Beau Sher, who has got plenty of point-to-point experience under his belt from two campaigns in Ireland, running nine times without success, however he did finish twice in maiden company at Tallow in February and his most recent start at Dromohane in May '03, where he was beaten 2lengths by Teach Altra, [who ran last weekend at Cottenham]. He clearly has some ability, it now all depends on how he's placed by current connections

ePOINT NOTEBOOK #002
Thursday, January 1.
The first week's entries has thrown together some interesting entries.. Here are some that caught my eye;

CIMMAROON
b, g. Synefos (USA) - Bayalika (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--David Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Cimmaroon is a five-year-old gelding by Synefos, out of Bayalika, (a daughter of Kashtan). He is unraced at the time of writing, how I'm sure that David Pipe will have schooled him well and hopefully he'll show some promise before the end of the season.
EVER AN OPTIMIST
b, g. Alflora - Sweet Optimist
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Guy Landau,
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Ever an Optimist, should really have been in ONE TO JUMP, however was amongst those were omitted at the "final cut". He is a promising sort, being a son of Alflora, out of the mare Sweet Optimist, which makes him a half-brother to hurdles winner Miss Optimist. He only ran once last term, however it was an encouraging effort - at Barbury Racecourse in a Members race in March, where he was belying odds of 50/1, when unseating his rider at the fifteenth. That form alone would give him hope in maiden company and I wont be at all surprised if he makes it into the winners' enclosure before the end of the season.
JOE LIVELY
b g Flemensfirth (USA) - Forest Gale
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Helen Needham
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- We had a Helen Needham trained newcomer Snowtre in the ePOINT notebook last term and we will have another one again this term in the shape of Joe Lively, a five-year-old gelding by Flemensfirth, out of Forest Gale - a daughter of Strong Gale, which makes him a half-brother to winning pointers/hunter chasers Philtre and Forest Fountain. He is sure to have been well schooled and hopefully will show some promise before the end of the season.
TICTAC (FR)
ch, g. Beyssac (FR) - Native d´Acres (FR)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--David Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Tictac has clearly been difficult to train, however since we included him in "ONE TO JUMP" 2001 and 2002, we really have to include him here. Tictac is an eight-year-old gelding by Beyssac, out of Native d´Acres, (a daughter of Native Guile). He was bought by the Nicholashayne operation in 2000 after showing some ability when trained in France by Thierry Civel. He won his first two races over fences, most recently the Prix Ouistreham Steeple-CH´. at Auteuil in June '00, where he beat Imprevue by 4lengths, [giving 16lbs], but hasn´t raced since, however clearly David Pipe has got him back to health and whilst he may turn out to a light of former days, it would please me if a horse with his trouble can get back on the winning trail.
TEXAS RANGER
b, g. Mtoto - Favorable Exchange (USA)
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Jo Foster
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Texas Ranger could well develop into a decent Open horse/hunter chaser this season. This six-year-old son of Mtoto did well for Charlie Mann last term, winning four hurdles races during the summer months, before stepping up in grade and running respectably, [though ultimately well-beaten], by the likes of the ill-fated Coolnagorna, Iris's Gift and Classified. He hasn´t races since coming home ninth to Hardy Eustace in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle [gr. I], however he takes a drop in grade and will be very hard to beat if he takes to the larger obstacles.
